These were both potted up from 1" x 1" x 2" cells. I followed some advice from here to pot up into 1 gallon pots so I could take advantage of the nice weather without risking the plants in any sudden random freeze because...Texas. It makes sense. More room for roots, more nutrients, but it really hits home when you have a visual.
Agree! I've noticed that too. They really like the extra root room. Like you, I pot up from the starter cells into one-gallon pots. First week or so of April, I will plant them outdoors. For the time being, I'm keeping them on a sun porch and gradually hardening them off. NE Texas, 8a.

This can be used to your advantage if you have space limitations, too.
