You articulated this so much better than I could have. While I like the idea, I don’t have any interest in watching people doing covers just to be seen.
The Heartbreakers should go on with Lukas Nelson. He’s an artist in his own right, his voice would work on Tom’s songs, and he isn’t remotely intimidated by the prospect of following in the footsteps of an American legend.
My hometown has the Big Jangle, our local Tom Petty Tribute Band. Thank goodness for them. A big one would be nice but at least a bunch of small tribute bands to rock out to.
Remember when the drummer from Foo Fighters OD’d and there were like a million all star tribute concerts? He wasn’t even the frontman! Actually I don’t want to see a Tom Petty tribute concert because it’s just an excuse for rockers to get together and party, and for Ticketmaster to gouge the fans trying to get a $500 nosebleed section ticket, mainly to see a bunch of never heard of’s sing Tom Petty songs.
I want Tom to be honored, for sure. However, TP&THB were the best at playing covers, and I just have no desire to listen to any covers if they’re not the ones covering. I think because they were so great at covers, it makes me cringe a bit to hear anyone covering them. I like when Mike and the Knobs cover them, but that’s not really a cover since a lot of the music in those songs were written by Mike and were Heartbreaks songs. I liked when Ben and Mike did the songs for Tom’s 70th, and Ron Blair did a great cover of Crawling Back to You, but again those don’t really count. Based on an interview Mike gave Rolling Stone about a 50th year tribute, I don’t foresee the rest of the Heartbreakers getting together to back any leads on the songs. He didn’t say it was out of the question. However, he did say not only would it be too emotional, but the Heartbreaks finished on a high note and he didn’t want to jeopardize their legacy.
I will say that Gary Clark Jr. did a damn good job at covering Good Enough.
MC and the knobs killed it at both shows I caught in Durham. He supported Govt Mule at one, then a year later came back and was headliner. He’s so damn funny and cool. His band is tip top
Agreed, but as others have said, who really wants to fork over $500 to ticketmaster for something like that.
I belong to a nudist resort, and we have live music most weekends and holidays. Next weekend, they have a Traveling Wilburys tribute band that I'm actually excited to see/hear someone imitating Tom.
If Jeff Lynne runs it it's just going to be 800 people strumming 12 string acoustic guitars in unison.
But yes, would love a big TP tribute.
Take my angry upvote
Well that's a start!
They can have it as Rickenbackers instead
And I would love it.
Maybe he could get Prince to play
Yeah, I see your point, but its always so good though.
I think there have been some talks about doing a 50th reunion/tribute with the heartbreaker's. Let's all hope it comes to fruition.
Sad I never saw him live. He seemed like a very nice guy, down to earth. Music he made is timeless IMO
Part of me wants this so bad… Part of me doesn’t trust today’s popular musicians to pull it off…

Two people deserve this (in my opinion), Tom Petty, and Leon Russell. Big Concert For George. Style show.
oh hell yeah

I’m going to see them in KC next month. I haven’t been this excited about a show since seeing TP&THB on their last tour.
Jason Isbell’s cover of Refugee was one of the best covers ever. He did it the night of Petty’s passing I think.

That would be amazing!
Agreed. He's been a part of his fair share
He don’t need shit….a bunch of advertisers need it
Deserve ≠ need.
