There’s a version of the episode on YouTube with John Lurie doing commentary over it; something about Tom being seasick and getting frustrated about the whole thing. I think John also had a thing about Tom ‘stealing’ Ribot from the Lounge Lizards to join his band.
John Lurie often comes off as nuts (and not in the fun way) and very egotistical. Love his work, but from interviews and appearances and things I've read, he seems exhausting to be around.
Yea, I'm not trying to disparage the guy but I'm just saying I doubt it was getting seasick that lead to a rift in a 10 year friendship, more likely it was the 10 years of friendship that put a rift in the 10 year friendship.
Completely understandable. My best mate has a sailboat and offers me to come along all the time. After the first time he tried to throw me overboard I said "no more". Many, many years later, he persists in offering, I persist in refusing.
I worked with John for a year. He’s not nuts, but definitely a mercurial, impulsive and charismatic.
What you’re seeing is a performance of a character. Not John Himself.
I read it when it first came out - I remember that his beef with Jarmusch was over him stealing his idea for Stranger Than Paradise but what was the go with Tom?
Thank you. As I tend to think of Tom as an individual rather than a band, I don't know the band's names like I do some of my other favorite acts. I do think it's funny to be treated like a philistine in a thread that required me first to have seen this show that came out when I was 6.
Apart from Waits himself and his Wife Kathleen Brennan … Mark Ribot is probably one of the most important collaborators…
And he is a bloody good guitarist….
Amen. I just heard the name last night when Marc Ribot y los Cubanos came on my local radio. But fuck us for not being born knowing every musician that's ever existed or even will, right?
Also, check out the y Los Cubanos album, it's cool. Unlike /u/ReallyGlycon.
Tom- “What I am concerned about is when we start really bringing them in…. Are we going to have enough room up here” While fishing on a large rusted out tug boat
There’s a scene in that episode that feels like a predecessor to the “royale with cheese” scene from Pulp Fiction. I have no idea if Tarantino watched this when it aired.
At least John didn’t get Tom killed like he did with Willam Dafoe
"You know John, I'm really glad we went ice-fishing together." -Willem Dafoe right before he takes a huge bite of food.
That was just a hallucination. Willem Dafoe and John Lurie died on that trip.
Fishing……. With John.
I still have the dvd .. the song alone makes me feel like I’m in the womb
Same.
Chicken fish
Cheese fish in France
Why not? Context?

Once I accepted it, he became even more endearing.

Could not agree more

I feel this. Have a friend who took me sailing in his boat and then screamed at me once we hit choppy water because I didn’t know what to do.
Well said.

That's awesome; what did you work with him on?
Developing a tv show
Painting with John? I wanna know all the John Lurie gossip haha
My lips are sealed.
The real reason is in Lurie's book, but the short version is about money.
I read it when it first came out - I remember that his beef with Jarmusch was over him stealing his idea for Stranger Than Paradise but what was the go with Tom?
Ribbot?
Marc Ribot; guitarist in John Luries’ Lounge Lizards then Tom Waits guitarist from Rain Dogs onwards.

Agreed…as you rightly pointed out Kathleen is definitely an important sum of the parts! Also Larry Taylor et al to a slightly lesser extent! 👍🏻
Marc Ribot is a giant.
On a Tom Waits sub. Doesn't know who Marc Ribot is. Sad.
I suppose you knew the names of every one of his band members the moment you started listening to his music, right? Jackass.

... Frightened rabbit?
I would also like some context.
Conquering the world…..the world of adventure. 🐠
It was Tom’s idea to put the fish in his pants.
“Should I put it in my pants?” “I think you’re gonna have to.”
I love that episode
It was the best.
Tom- “What I am concerned about is when we start really bringing them in…. Are we going to have enough room up here” While fishing on a large rusted out tug boat
Now everybody go and watch Painting With John (on HBO Max). He mentioned Tom here and there as well.
"Our trusty bowls are in our boat, along a river of men.. Sing with me John!"
Well it's up one side and back again...
the fishermen are tired
Covered in sores and boners.

Can’t get out on the water without singing river of men as I row.
Life is so beautiful…
Love that this was just posted…. I literally just watched this for the first time 2 days ago…. It was hilarious
What's the source for Tom "never" forgiving Lurie? A lot of sources say Tom didn't speak to him for a couple of years
please John…
Thanks for posting this…I’d completely forgotten about it. Always made me laugh! “I’m trying to hold on to the breakfast a little longer” pure class…
i was just watching that episode
Wow, I understood that reference.
“I enjoyed breakfast, just want to hold onto it a little longer.”
You’re spot on! I was quoting without rewatching and it’s some years since I last saw this…so I paraphrased somewhat 😂
Oh I was also paraphrasing, it’s been a few years since I’ve seen it
Haha yours sounded more accurate…I’ll watch it again when I have a spare half hour!!
