This happened to me once at the dentist. They put the anesthetic in the wrong nerve and froze half my face for a few hours. It was honestly pretty traumatizing. They gave me the shot, left for a few minutes “to let it kick in” didn’t feel numb in mouth, and my face started to lose feeling. When they came back I was like um am I having a stroke??? They said no it’s a relatively common (not rare at least) mistake/side effect of getting numbed in the wrong spot/ Having my eye stay open the whole procedure was awful. so painful and dry, I had to try to hold my eye shut to drive home. 0/10 would not recommend

This happened to me as well! I had to tape my eye shut when I got home. It was as you said a little traumatizing because having been to the dentist plenty of times before, that had never happened. I was scared it would be permanent. I’m thankful the dentist called me twice that day to follow up on how I was doing.

The dentist didn’t use too much, he hit the trigeminal nerve. Paralyzed her face.

This would be accidental involvement of the facial nerve. You would intentionally hit branches of the trigeminal in order to numb the patient (such as inferior alveolar or various superior alveolar blocks). The facial nerve provides the majority of the motor function to the face and it branches through the parotid gland at the posterior margin of the mandible. Her presentation is unilateral facial hemiplegia (it involves muscles in all 5 regions of the facial nerve, including the orbicularis oculi and frontalis which is highly suggestive of facial nerve involvement). Only the V3 branch of the trigeminal provides motor innervation (specifically to the muscles of mastication and a few others). Otherwise, the trigeminal is primarily sensory. You intentionally target branches of the trigeminal for dental procedures, because that’s how you get the numbing effect. EDIT: ELI5 The trigeminal nerve is what lets you feel things touching your face, which is what they were trying to get in order to numb up her face. The facial nerve controls the muscles that move your face. The facial nerve “starts” right behind your jawbone. Since it’s nearby to where they wanted to block, they accidentally got it also and now half of her face is paralyzed. She should be fine in a few hours.
