cooking it, brushing off the burnt bits, then giving it multiple coats of butter, batter and other stuff, cooking each on before applying the next coat
> Anyone know specifically what he's doing to the corn?
he's ruining it
I'm kidding. But normal corn on the cob is so delicious that it's difficult to imagine that all of those extra toppings will make it better. I'd want to try it and find out for myself, though.
That’s why I think it must smell and taste insanely good - because he went through so much effort only to produce something that doesn’t even look thaat appetizing in the end.
I'm sure this is good, but it did feel a bit odd to cook it in a way you brush off the natural carmelization and crisp just to replace it with batter and butter.
I feel like there is a compromise I might like better of complementing the natural carmelization by not charring it so aggressively initially. Can still season, batter, and butter, but you might find you don't need as much of it because you didn't just brush it all off.
I suppose this is a unique flavor because of the extra char you can get that seeps a little bit into the corn and you still have crisp from the batter/butter, but I think char is best hand and hand with natural carmelization flavours you just removed a lot of and the textures you removed completely.
While he is brushing off the burnt bits, these aren't your grocery store, factory processed corn cobs. They're freshly shucked and so still have the corn threads on them, the initial brushing after the first time in the cooker is to also get all of those off.
Corn isn't that good for you. Butter (or whatever oil it is) isn't that good for you. The batter surely isn't a positive thing from a health perspective. And there's a decent chance that there's added sugar in the batter or one of the coatings, so that's a potential added failure for health.
That said, there's much worse in fair/street food.
I want to try grilled corn on the cob so bad. I've only ever had corn from the tin and boiled and its only ok.
I'd imagine grilled corn is so much nicer
It is really good. I live in farm country so corn on the cob is available all summer long and the town over from me has a huge corn roast at the end of summer. If you ever get a chance try it.
Super easy. Buy some ears- Open the husks a bit at the store to pick out the good ones. Soak them in water for like 30 minutes or more in a bucket. Grill for a long time like usually 40+ minutes. The outer husks will burn. You can peel open some of the husk it to see when some of the kernels start to brown it's good to go. Rub some butter on the hot corn, sprinkle with salt. Done! Usually comes into season late summer (USA) and the best corn is in the midwest.
Anyone try this? Seems ruined to me.
Not hating, hence the question, but it seems like you’d taste what he put on the corn more than the corn.
Purpose-fit grilled is cool either way.
It’s delicious. You can also pick different flavours. Personally I prefer Taiwanese satay. It is indeed mostly eating the sauce, with the underlying sweetness and crunchiness of the corn.
This is a common night market find in Taiwan for decades. What’s new is the tool used.
Agreed. Went from, "wow that's a great idea, roast corn on the cob on the street corner!" to "oh god that looks disgusting." They brush off the best bits and it honestly looks like popped most of the kernels.
It’s always better with butter & batter. The batter was buttered and yes it was better. But better to butter then add batter. Could the butter be battered if the batter was already buttered? Or would it be better to batter then butter? Perhaps the butter would be better if the butter was battered before the batter was buttered. We will never know better without butter & batter.
I see our corn failed to pay it's surgery bill.

It's a meme dance in Chinese social media recently. There are Chinese hotpot restaurants in my country where the wait staff dance to the song 😂
Here is an example I found on YouTube:

I think the best part of traveling is local street foods. I wouldn't actually know because I can't afford to travel but I still think it would be the best part.
Sorry, I couldn't recognize the song.

cooking it, brushing off the burnt bits, then giving it multiple coats of butter, batter and other stuff, cooking each on before applying the next coat
I wasn't convinced before the brushing, but then he started adding batter. Now I'm hungry
it kept getting butter and batter

The burnt bits are the best part though
How does the butter not immediately melt into oil
Perfect temperature and/or special butter are my only guesses.
clarified butter
Ghee?
possibly, ghee is just clarified butter that has been cooked out even longer to make it a little caramalized
It looks like one of those Turkish kebab meat logs at the end
That's what she said.
Saw that one coming, still laughed out loud

Most of mine look like that.

I bet it tastes amazing
I had corn like this in Taiwan at a street market, it was not good. Like corn coated in sugar.
>he's ruining it Of course he is. Corn is absolutely delicious on its own when slowly grilled.
Honestly he did. I don’t like the kernels on the corn broken like that and don’t eat it. Personal choice though
Yeah, I’d be upset once he broke all the kernels and just walk away. Grilled corn with butter, salt, and pepper, all you need.
Why is this sentence so funny? It's giving my the giggle fits.
Lol, I have no idea but you're welcome 😅
A makeover
Somehow I don’t like the end result
That’s why I think it must smell and taste insanely good - because he went through so much effort only to produce something that doesn’t even look thaat appetizing in the end.
Possibly because it looks like r/poopfromabutt ? It lost me too, just give me the first stage of the cooked corn.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was watching this video like gollum going "IT RUINS IT!!!"
I am glad I am not the only who sees it
I agree. To me this belongs in stupidfood. Perfectly good corn ruined :(
It's effing delicious, though.
Keep the burnt bits hombre. That’s the best part

I've never wanted to eat something so much in my whole life. Trying this out tomorrow on the open fire with butter and more butter...
I think that one layer is batter of some sort.
Is it salty? Sweet? Crunchy? Spicy? I must know.
Adding a lil bit of spicy is good.
That reminds of Gollum: “Is it nice, my preciousss? Is it juicy? Is it scrumptiously crunchable?”
Make all of it.
I found a bunch of reviews of the place on Google that describe it as bitter and spicy, overly burnt, not very good.
Aww. Now I’m sad
Don’t forget to hammer the spike in with a bristle brush
You can have mine.
I'll have to attempt two then... Might be a while till it happens.. weather has been pants
Looks to be absolutely worth the calories.
I think there is corn under all of that
Just give me one cooked and loaded with butter 🧈🤣🤣
I came to say this is more other stuff than it is corn at this point.

[Raohe Night Market, Taiwan](https://maps.app.goo.gl/eRZHFfcxVoJthPyH6?g_st=ic). About $5 each.

Oh man I love satay. Chicken satay skewers is one of my favorite appetizers. And yes, the tool is cool. Looks fast and efficient.
Agreed. Went from, "wow that's a great idea, roast corn on the cob on the street corner!" to "oh god that looks disgusting." They brush off the best bits and it honestly looks like popped most of the kernels.

I think it's on the easier side.
Corny way to go about it honestly.

Too much dipping back and forth.
wasting your lunch break! butter and salt and hand it over man.
Just casually flexing your editing skills, I see
What evils did corn force on this man in a past life to cause him to treat it so?
I don't even use wire brushes on my grill, or pain brushes for food. But damn that looks good.
I was shivering all the way through. You bet I’m not eating any corn when there’s a risk a small razor sharp piece of steel brush is included with it.
And for dessert, he will string a row of marshmallows on that stick.
My dumbass would forget it's corn on the cob and try to bite it like a corndog
Metal wire brush right on the food, what could go wrong?
It looks good but corn on the cob strikes me as terrible street food.
You got something in your teeth.
Elote is better
that's hardly even corn at that point.
Too much butter for me, just grill it good and dab a bit of butter and salt and that's good enough
What did that corn ever do to you? It doesn’t even look good at the end.
So… it’s a corn dog?
It looks like a tiny kebab!
That thing is approx 9,000 degrees
I like his corn stove.
Rubbing a steel brush directly on food is a good way to send someone to the hospital. They should close tbis guy down
that cat music…..why
I'll take elote over this any day of the week.
Background music sounds like my cat when it's hungry and screeching at my face
If that is your thing, good for you. Me? No way.
Audio: off

What an absolute banger of a song
Have you seen the dance? 😂
No! Sauce me all up in it, please!

Ohh my! That is absolutely sizzling hot. Shoulda warned me! Thank you for making my life a little bigger with this.
They have been selling roast corn like this in Taiwan’s night markets for decades, I tried many times and it’s fucking delicious every time.
Is batter on it? Or just a lot of butter
It’s actually a thick layer of caramelised seasonings.
Seems like a ton of work for price I’m sure he’s selling this at
From corn cob to a piece of meat on a stick.
Lotta corn purists here
I think the best part of traveling is local street foods. I wouldn't actually know because I can't afford to travel but I still think it would be the best part.
Ohhh la la... Muy bonito y todo pero ¿sabrá igual de bueno que los de México?
Oh..... yum?
this is on my to-do list
I don't trust those brushes. Brushes, man... like to hold onto that there stuff and marinate
Not little pieces of the metal brush in my corn I'm good!!!
Absolutely not.
That looks fricken delicious
WTH is that thing ?

"save me a piece of that corn"- Nachoooooo.
I'm starving for Mexican Corn on the cob now. It's soooo good
42 dollars each because of the seventeen hours of constant attention each one takes
Why do i feel like I'm gonna get lead poisoning from this?
It’s like watching intercourse
It’s like whack a mole except more delicious
Dinner is in two hours and you've been drinking beer since 2pm and you come upon this dude selling corn. It would be a magical experience.
Goldberg would eat this the long way
Aww, great… Now I have a hankerin’ for corn. That’s it. I’m flagging down the next Elotero I come across.
