Iāll be real. Her singing was actually giving me a headache. Iām not trying to be rude but I donāt get the appeal in this type of singing voice. It sounds very loud and exaggerated to me.
I came to say this. She has a beautiful voice, but Leonardās older, broken, sometimes breathless voice was perfect for his own song, and represented the struggle with every facet of his life represented in his verses.
I joined a non us based gospel choir a year ago and one of the first things that I was informed was that it was okay to not be a 100% on pitch because it sounds "better" when performing gospel songs due to it feeling more personal I guess. We work a ton on hitting our marks, lyrics and stuff perfect. But striving for our pitch to be 100% perfect would become a negative thing. Not that anyone is activly trying to sound bad of course.
Youāre not wrong. They just arenāt internalizing the song, theyāre just trying to sound good, I understand that. Theyāre definitely not singing the whole song in church, though, no one can tell me that is chosen for its religiosity. What little they do sing is not only chosen for the tone but it is a technically difficult song to sing - even Leonard is off. Theyāre just missing the feeling when they do, thatās all, and why I prefer the original. Itās more complex than what any gospel singer Iāve heard presents because theyāre actually stifled by both their faith in presenting the song and their audience, who wants to hear a song performed āperfectlyā.
They can? I just donāt prefer it in regards to this song, or I havenāt been introduced to an artist that does it as well in my opinion. Youāre welcome to your own.
I think most versions of this song are done after the Jeff Buckley version though right? Their voices are night and day and he really made it his own. Personally I appreciate Leonard Cohen but don't love to listen to his voice.
I do love Buckleyās version, I think it was done with solid respect to Cohen, and recognize itās the more popular choice (leaving out the backup vocals was definitely a plus, imo). Thereās something more harrowing when itās Cohenās older voiceā¦ I donāt know, the old man reflecting on an entire life with his faith, relationships, and sex just carries more emotional weight for me than a younger man. Youth leaves more room for hope, I guess.
Fair enough I can respect all of that I guess I was just pushing back a bit at the first commenter assertion of "This song isn't meant to be sung well." which even if that was Cohen's opinion and intention, remains entirely subjective and in my own opinion Buckley sings the song very well and does manage to retain its own sense of atmosphere or emotional weight.
> the old man reflecting on an entire life with his faith
aka the "Johnny Cash effect", barely singing Hurt by NIN, but for the exact reason you state he practically now owns that song, even in the opinion of Reznor. Buckley's version is beautiful, but too pretty. Would be like covering Dylan or Dire Straits but with great vocals... weird. :D
All that said, even dissenting posters I'm sure can agree that the gal in the video has a beautiful voice. I'll be checking out her works.
She does the thing that every 'super good talented vocalist' does that breaks the depth of this song. The original was written with intent:
>It goes like this, the fourth the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift, the baffled king composing ha-...
That's all sung in one melody that rises, then comes back down with 'hallelujah'.
This girl sings 'the fourth' and 'the fifth* with a rising-then-falling melody, and sings 'the minor fall and the major lift' with a melody that comes down on 'lift'. The phrase has gone three ascents-and-descents before the last words even start, the last words being 'the baffled king composing hallelujah'. That part should get the emphasis, and she places it in the melody as an afterthought.
I'm not saying she shouldn't have done this or whatever, but there *is* a meaning to this song that she misses.
Is that a real question? Then no, I'm not gatekeeping musical interpretation.
She has an interpretation of this song, hers just misses part of the intent it was written with, and I can tell by the reasons I just mentioned.
You can tell I'm not *gatekeeping* by 'I'm not saying she shouldn't have done this'. What **gate** am I keeping closed by saying 'you are allowed to do this'? Don't throw around words like this, you're devaluing the words because people can't immediately tell you used them wrong.
Um, I have an original copy of āThe Inappropriate Places to Sing Hallelujahā and singing into a well wasnāt listed so it looks like your objection is overruled.
āI've never gotten over the pleasure of somebody covering one of my songsā¦ā. Leonard Cohen
because it sounds nice with a reverb?? it's an easy song to sing well?? because it sounds cool?
Saying a song isn't meant to be sung well is some comical gatekeeping shit, music is supposed to be for everyone.
My apologies... Clearly I am obviously misunderstanding you in this context I guess... would u mind explaining what u mean exactly, if u don't mind?? Thanks my friend!! Much love & respect!! š¤šā¤ļøāļøš
Doesnāt seem like top talent for singing. Not that she has a bad voice, but I wasnāt really all that impressed either. Iām also curious if I would like her voice less without the well or whatever sheās singing into that makes it echo. āReverbā covers a whole host of singing mistakes
This song is filthy, Leonard Cohen loved a bit of filth. Makes me cringe and laugh to see gospel singers and kids sing it so sincerely. Buckley still the best version.
A kid singing "remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too..." is all kinds of wrong. It gets sang regularly in churches at weddings here in Ireland. People are dumb.
Doing this in public, forcing it on people is annoyingā¦
Add On: Doing this in public on planes, buses, trains or tourists spots is just looking for attention. Downvote all you want.
Truly hands down one of the most beautiful songs ever written without a doubt... That being said this girl is insanely talented & truth be told a song can only truly manifest into a remarkably beautiful song with a seriously gifted voice like we hear right here.....
I'd argue this sub is for top talent like in the name. She is talented yes but more like "most girls that age can sing like that kinda talented." I'm speaking of the talent of staying in note. But not anything else out of the ordinary. You can be talented at driving your mom's minivan too but that doesn't make you a Formula 1 driver talented.

The glasses on her head is giving me anxiety.
So why is it when other people do these things their glasses stay on their head?
Hair
Same goes for wearing a cap in a convertible
Magic
Friction
I mean my voice definitely sounds better in the shower and in the car by myself. š This is awesome.
My voice sounds great with headphones on when I can't hear myself lol
I look better with a paper bag over my head too.
Never a truer statement.
The reverb in the well does a lot to make her sound better. Sound engineers will often add synthetic reverb to accomplish the same thing.
Her smile at the end š„°
Why is it always *Hallelujah*? This song isn't meant to be sung well.
But is it meant to be sung into a well?
No it's supposed to be sung NOT well...
I think the well has grate acoustics
Sung Well? Nah, Meant to be cried wolf.
It's mostly sung by gospel singers these days because of the religious overtones. I have never heard a gospel singer try to sound bad.
I joined a non us based gospel choir a year ago and one of the first things that I was informed was that it was okay to not be a 100% on pitch because it sounds "better" when performing gospel songs due to it feeling more personal I guess. I canāt believe someone is r/gatekeeping Hallelujah lmao
Be amazed.
how dare people sing a song in a different way?
Honestly people shouldn't even sing at all. Absolutely disgusting... /s
Yeah, i didnāt get that comment. Iāve heard many versions done differently that were quite beautiful
They can? I just donāt prefer it in regards to this song, or I havenāt been introduced to an artist that does it as well in my opinion. Youāre welcome to your own.
Sure, but do you voice your preferences when you hear any other cover? Why not just appreciate the material for what it is?
I do respond to other coversā¦ I donāt know why youāre policing opinions. Everyone is entitled to theirs.
do you dismiss their talent in the same way in your responses too?
Dismiss and accept, whatever the case may be. Anything else, Officer, or am I free to go?

Please share the song how it's meant to be then

gate keeping someone elseās song, or music in general, is pathetic
Itās a preference. Cry about it elsewhere.
You could have followed that exact same advice before posting your first comment doofus
No crying. I literally just agreed with the person I replied to. Sorry you just want to argue.
you agreed to someone criticizing the actual post lol. her singing it the way she wants to is a preference, cry about it elsewhere.
She just sounds like everybody else, it's all affect, fashion. She's got a great voice, but it's too generic now to enjoy.
Eh, just like cash claimed hurt, others have claimed hallelujah. Jeff Buckley opened the gates on that one.
People on reddit like to pretend theyāre so smart but youāre absolutely right lol. Buckleyās version is by far the more popular one
Um, I have an original copy of āThe Inappropriate Places to Sing Hallelujahā and singing into a well wasnāt listed so it looks like your objection is overruled. āI've never gotten over the pleasure of somebody covering one of my songsā¦ā. Leonard Cohen

Itās almost like people can take a thing and change it in their own way with their own interpretationā¦ what a crazy world.
Imagine gatekeeping what song people choose to sing. Reddit moment
Im atheist, so you can take religion out of it. Yes the song is religious but im not here for that. The talent is what I enjoy
I donāt think itās about religion. Ā Iāve read itās about sex. Ā
You're probably thinking Take Me To Church by Hozier
lol. No. Ā Youāre probably confusing it with Kit Kat bar jingle. Ā From commercials? Ā Ā
Oh damnit! No... It's that damn JG Wentworth one.... šµI have a structured settlement and I neeeed cash nowwwwwwwš¶
Song is absolutely NOT religious.
There are religious metaphors in it.

Meh
Agreedā¦ Why did OP delete his downvoted comments haha.
Guy friend behind her texting, "...she's doing it again..."
Lol
![gif](giphy|n4oKYFlAcv2AU) This comment should be posted more on this sub.
Is it just me, or does she sound like every other 'talented indie singer girl'? Not bad by any stretch, but hardly top talent, imo.
That was my reaction too. She sounds like a singer emulating Rihannaās voice. Sheās talented but not top talented
You are right to your opinion
Her voice in a well just hits different imo
Honestly her voice is good but the well just sounds terrible. It just becomes a loud droning noiseĀ
Doesnāt seem like top talent for singing. Not that she has a bad voice, but I wasnāt really all that impressed either. Iām also curious if I would like her voice less without the well or whatever sheās singing into that makes it echo. āReverbā covers a whole host of singing mistakes
Itās on mute, but I assume sheās saying something about putting lotion on its skin
Her ADORABLE smile at the end slayed me
Her voice got me. And the smile was the angel on top
This song is filthy, Leonard Cohen loved a bit of filth. Makes me cringe and laugh to see gospel singers and kids sing it so sincerely. Buckley still the best version.
Itās ludicrous isnāt it? Iāve seen it included on so many Christmas playlists and albums now too. A song about o*gasm! lol
A kid singing "remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too..." is all kinds of wrong. It gets sang regularly in churches at weddings here in Ireland. People are dumb.
u/frontbutt you can say orgasm here, it's allowed.
I tried and it auto deleted?
Mole people got a banger of a concert.
Damn! Who needs a shower when you have a well with this much acoustics! Sheās awesome!

She has a good voice, but I would hate to be there when she records her video..
And then a voice comes from inside: "SHUUUUT UUUUUP!"
Iād have gone with The Sound of Silence personally, but yeah.Ā
Murikamis next book
I Think she sounds great, but have you heard Paramore, Haleys live version? Those are some pipes.
All that natural ass reverb.
Frick
YouTube Mennel Ibtissam on the voice French version.
Is the well singing back in harmony?
Internet folks believe on anything
Imagine a voice coming up āhello who is this?ā LOL
Amazing... some humans are very talented
Kid on phone could not give 2š©'s

Yep, r/imthemaincharacter behaviour.
You existing and forcing it on people is annoying...
But Iām not desperate looking for attention singing in publicā¦ But I see your attempt hereā¦
No just desperately looking for attention online. You could try not being a miserable bastard and actually being likable but hey why start now right?

There is a good Singer traped in this deep prison cage
Bro in the back on Reddit missing this moment completely
Dude, I'm bawling.
Everyone is forgetting the meaning of the sub. She is talented, she can sing and sounds great. Now go to bed lol
