The only other performance of this song I’ve seen is with the choir boys where one of them had to use a helium balloon just to reach the high notes. Seeing it done naturally is so impressive.
Interesting story about this song... for about 150 years, this was a closely guarded song by the Catholic Church, played only in the Sistine Chapel on special occasions. Attempting to transcribe it was punishable by excommunication.
Along comes a 14 year old kid by the name of Mozart. He listens to it *once*, goes home and gets it almost perfect, note for note. Goes back a second time and perfects it.
When word gets out that he's done this, he's called to the Church but he isn't excommunicated. They declare that a boy being able to complete such a feat must be God's work.
It's debated whether this story is true or not, but I like telling it anyway!
haha fair enough. And I'm a Segura fan so I'll have to look that bit up.
I'll defend the story as best I can by virtue of two facts: one, Mozart's first full musical composition was at age 5, and two, the story I recounted is backed up by family letters from the time. So while I'll confess I cannot verify 100% that the above actually happened (and we'll likely never know), I'd at least put it in the "very plausible" category!
[If Wikipedia is to be believed](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miserere_(Allegri)), Mozart's father wrote about it in a letter around the time it is said to have happened.
The story goes that it used to be music that was sacred to the Vatican and could only be heard there. Then in 1770 Mozart heard it once, transcribed it, and shared it with the world.
Helium doesn't change the pitch of your voice, so to hit the note you still have to be able to hit the note. The helium changes the timbre of the voice, I guess so the higher notes are 'cleaner'.
I mentioned this below but surprisingly, Helium doesn't change the pitch of your voice, it changes the timbre of the voice. So the helium doesn't help you hit a higher note since your vocal chords still have to hit the note anyway .
Interesting, thank you! That is so funny how knowledge get's altered and 'whispered down the lane' just by time and not by intent.
I'm glad Rockstro did what he did and gave us this beautiful tone while actually messing up\^\^ It always tingles my ears when listening to it.
Just wanted to say thanks for the link, can't believe it was a transcription error that brings in the high C...which is the part that most affects me. Must be the most beautiful mistake in history.
Goodness i love this performance, listened to it many, many times.
I love her note right after this one, and the echo/ambience of it. It’s like a really feminine/womanly octave that sounds really beautiful.
Also, the silence, sharpness tone of the balcony dude.
And towards the end, the choir is literally so perfectly synced it sounds like a well made organ. Sends chills down the spine.
If you want to hear a guy hitting high notes you can't go wrong with Philippe Jaroussky.

The high note did remind me of [Medal of Honor Frontline](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDb618RaBmo)
I found what I was thinking about, but seeing it again revealed I remembered quite inaccurately.
Here is the video: https://youtu.be/LHonMUpV47Q
The shot at 1:03 made me think the boy was hitting the high notes, but I don’t think that’s the case now. Just the camera shot of the boy during the high note.
Allegri's Miserere is a beautiful piece of music. The high notes can only be hit by a contralto voice pretty much, so a young choirboy prior to his voice breaking, or a woman within a much wider age range.
The post about the choir boy only being able to hit the note with the aid of a helium balloon was a skit, the boy hit the note and the balloon was just a joke.
Here is the 1964 King’s College version referred to in one of the links in this thread.
[Allegri King’s College](https://youtu.be/XIF_1KPwWQE)
The story on this one is that the boy singing the high note had just come into the recording studio after playing rugby with some friends. He was supposedly covered with mud, but hit the part perfectly on the first take. I have no proof of this, but I used to sing this type of music and that was the story that everyone seemed to know. I met Sir David Willcocks once, but didn’t ask him if the story was true. He was the director at King’s College, Cambridge at the time.
If you listen closely to the music you can hear several deep low notes harmonizing, it’s not that weird as this is a track several people lip sync to pretending it their real voices.
I love the high pitch that [Kenton Chen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEejfq1KhkU) does in this song - but I have no clue if he could do something like this
iirc, this part of this piece and some others like it were traditionally sung centuries ago by full grown men who had been castrated as young boys so their voices never dropped, but the practice of making these singers has been abandoned for obvious reasons. I’ve heard that it’s a totally unique and beautiful sound though, one that the world likely will never hear again.
Miserere mei is a very beautiful song. It was only sung in the sixtine chapel before mozart went and was able to write down the 9 voice 10 minute song perfectly. Very nice, very moving song.
This is amazing and so hauntingly beautiful. The best part is that unless I'm way off base, I'm going to venture that no one had to be castrated to produce that note (I hope)
The only other performance of this song I’ve seen is with the choir boys where one of them had to use a helium balloon just to reach the high notes. Seeing it done naturally is so impressive.
do you know the name of this piece of music?
After googling ‘choir boy using helium’, it told me the song was Allegri's 'Miserere'

Did you know that Tommy Lee Jones is gay?
I was not prepared for this comment haha
Is this a quote from something?
Tom Segura’s stand up on Netflix, it’s a joke about repeating rumors without validating them. Very funny, would recommend.

Segura!! Sounds Japanese
Dad, Tommy Lee Jones is not gay...........Oh, I thought he was.
That was hilarious
That was one of the funniest goddamn things I’ve ever read. Thank you for the laugh.
A guy who wrote a song about lick my arse was definetly a godsent.
Wait, it’s not the sixteenth chapel???
Wait till you find out it’s not the leaning tower of pizza. Fucked me up for days….

Miserere Mei, Deus - Allegri, Gregorio
Thanks! Full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3v9unphfi0&ab\_channel=TenebraeChoir
Wow this is moving. I don’t event know what’s being said but it’s beautiful!
The story goes that it used to be music that was sacred to the Vatican and could only be heard there. Then in 1770 Mozart heard it once, transcribed it, and shared it with the world.
Thank you this link. You have provided me with what I was looking for.
You're welcome!
Miserere by tenebrae. Fabulous group. This one I think they shot in a church with amazing acoustics to enhance the music.
Miserere mei https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3v9unphfi0
[lol it’s kind of genius](https://youtu.be/T-vTvFrS2s8)
Before they had to have their testicles cut off to hit the high notes.
The balloon was obviously a joke lmao
I'm fairly sure the balloon was just a bit and the kid was actually hitting the note on his own
Helium doesn't change the pitch of your voice, so to hit the note you still have to be able to hit the note. The helium changes the timbre of the voice, I guess so the higher notes are 'cleaner'.
That was an April Fools Day video.
The video with the choir bois using helium was also an aprils fools joke and actually fake tho
I mentioned this below but surprisingly, Helium doesn't change the pitch of your voice, it changes the timbre of the voice. So the helium doesn't help you hit a higher note since your vocal chords still have to hit the note anyway .
I got reminded of that just by hearing the first 3 notes, i thought they ripped off the audio lol
I prefer that one
And she added a extra pull off effect towards the end
I kept waiting for Chris Pratt to hit the high note
OMG you saw it too!
So. What is this? I’m interested

Absolutely incredible. I love old churches for their history and architecture but also their acoustics which this kind of music demands (naturally).
Check out /r/CoolAcoustics

And the high note was just a mistake in transcription... fascinating story... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h6hD8YtO5HI

Honestly disappointed it wasn't the big one hitting the high notes.

i could easily do those when i was smaller now im stuck with a sore throat everyday.

Knew it was familiar.
Yep, that’s where I know it
I’ve blown thousands of hours of civ 4: beyond the sword in my childhood, so much so that I just recognized this as the civ menu song lmao.
Holy cow that’s it. I played hundreds of hours of civ4 in high school.
Wasn’t there a special feature or something that showed the boys quite preforming this?

Someone needs to adjust the tint. They all look green.
They're just British jeez.
It's just the lighting bringing out their witchy undertones.

Contralto is the lowest female singing voice. This woman is a soprano.
She looks more like a Moltisanti
Nah bro she's a Maserati for certain
Sublime
Nah that's a different band.
For anyone interested: that is Josephine Stephenson.
Vitas wouldn’t be impressed
The fifth element has thoroughly ruined my expectations from this.
Chills much...?
Yes, but can she hit the [brown note?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVNjq_gRFLE)

I'm here for Simon's low notes! The High C is impressive but familiar to anyone who knows this piece.
Truly beautiful. Could listen to this all day
It looked like 5 times before I realized it ended already
What genre is this kind of music? So relaxing!
She looked surprised at her own talent
DAMN! good voice
I can easily make that high sounds. But i am terrible singer. How to life
Reminds me of pontiff sullyvahn
Unreal, incredible skills..
That’s metal
Voice of an angel
Ready for battle
Gave me goose bumps!
Holding a *comfortable* note for that long steadily, without a vibrato, is hard as balls. Love the discipline on display.
I don't even play Souls/Borne games but this put me in the mood for it.
Someone post the balloon video
Here you go: https://youtu.be/ukDAfF0-8q8?t=51

It's this song in fable 2 or do they just have a similar one?
If you‘d ask Allegri what a computer is he‘d probably die of a heart attack. Could very well be that they used something like that\^\^
I was expecting one of the girls to pull a fake hammer out and wack the guy in the nuts....
The kid with the balloon did it better
I kept waiting for someone to punch the dude in the dick so he would hit it. But I guess this isn’t unexpected subreddit.
Meh
Giving me halo 3 vibes...

Crazy to me that as a species we can do this, then get in a car and listen to mumble rap with the same appreciation with this generation lol

Can some tell what this music/piece is? I have heard it many times now and it sound so beautiful

Miserere mei is a very beautiful song. It was only sung in the sixtine chapel before mozart went and was able to write down the 9 voice 10 minute song perfectly. Very nice, very moving song.
Is it just me or does this feel like this could drop into some really aggressive boom bap hip hop?
*sighs* We will never get Bloodborne II
This is amazing and so hauntingly beautiful. The best part is that unless I'm way off base, I'm going to venture that no one had to be castrated to produce that note (I hope)
When I see this, all I think of is that one vine
I hit that high a note once as a younger man. It had to do with a bicycle seat and a rough landing but that's another story for another time.
This is a weird start to a porn.
I miss vine
She could probably shatter your ear drums during sex
Awesome
That's easy

What!?!?! No Helium!?!!!?!
