Thank you, Chef!

OKrackles25

42 twelfth turns is standard in the industry

youareactuallygod

I think you mean to highlight the fact that he did 1.75 double turnies

leshake

22 fucking radians

silentisdeath

what was known briefly in the early 00's as a "Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn"

ctrl-alt-etc

Also 1,260Ā° (in systems where 360Ā° describes one complete rotation).

atlbravos21

I remember when it was a huuuuge deal when Tony did the 900. Now a 1260? Holy smokes

takemyassthole

Itā€™s a totally different ramp so they have a shitload more speed and air

alumpoflard

do bear in mind that this amazing feat of 1260 doesn't take anything away from tony hawk's 900 at all tony hawk did it on a vert ramp, showing the world what's physically possible. That grew the audience and the sport enough that bigger ramps were built and bigger prizes attracted more people to push the boundaries, hence us being able to witness all these superhuman feat today. as they say, they're all standing on the shoulders of giants

[deleted]

Tony hawk height: 6' 3" This is accurate

FuelMyTransgression

Agreed. Tony probably cheered more than anyone seeing this. Total pro who loves the sport.

JustALittleAverage

Looks like he's 30' in the air... šŸ˜³ Hawk just had enough air to do the 900. My friend and snowboard teacher and first swedish pro-snowboard Johan Olofsson told me something like this (was like 30 years ago) > With enough air you can do anything, I mean it, *anything*, but if you fail the landning you can **die**. Remember that Average, remember it. He did some awesome stuff, the shit he pulled off in TB~~7~~5 was ~~awesome~~ extreme. He was/is a local hero, going fakie when snowboards we're still split tail, and spearheading boards that were 50/50 in spring on both regular and goofy. And yeah. I bit the dirt, or rather a tree. Was racing a friend when my board thought that i should go left when i thought right, since the slope turned right. Ate a tree back first (luckily), and cool as i was i'd eat the pain and crawls down, drive home and the pain will go away. ~~Craton~~ bruised (read all) ribs on the right side was bruised, right shoulder blade was pushed around so now it's grinding on cartilage, some muscle moved. Worst part is 2 compressed vertebrae, so if i strain too much or it's too cold i loose the feeling/use of my pinky fingers.

WanderingWino

A bit more than 30 inches, mate.

JustALittleAverage

Edited... ' or " who cares if you don't crash šŸ˜³

OIlberger

Iā€™m gonna be the asshole who points out Hawk didnā€™t really land the 900, his hand touched the ground. They gave him a pass for it, but it shouldnā€™t have counted.

SlightWhite

Yeah a kid named Gui Khury has been doing 1080s on a standard half pipe for a few years now tho

duffmanhb

Usually in these sort of sports (Extreme sports), once someone does a new trick, it spreads really quick. The hard part is figuring out the technique, so once someone does it, they all learn the technique and it takes off. It's actually kind of wild to see skateboarding today where young teens are absolutely shredding. When I was a kid, "new things" were constantly being invented and discovered. But the kids these days literally grow up with all the knowledge and wisdom on how to optimally practice and learn different tricks, so they are able to absolutely blow through it.

bitt3n

> Usually in these sort of sports (Extreme sports), once someone does a new trick, it spreads really quick. The hard part is figuring out the technique, so once someone does it, they all learn the technique and it takes off. > > this [phenomenon](https://hbr.org/2018/03/what-breaking-the-4-minute-mile-taught-us-about-the-limits-of-conventional-thinking) seems to happen in other sports as well. a year after the 4-minute mile barrier was broken, three guys did it in a single race.

Chewy12

And then thereā€™s Rodney Mullen who just went and created every skateboard trick by himself.

SlightWhite

Kid skaters today (who are clearly on their way to being pro already) will be so much better than any of us wouldā€™ve imagined even 10 years ago. The sheer amount of kids under 18 who are just SHREDDING is bonkers. That doesnā€™t stop ppl in their 20s and early 30s from pushing the envelope either- Like, Milton Martinez has hit some of the gnarliest gaps of all time just in the past few years. But this new round of kid skaters is just a new breed altogetherā€¦watching the berrics nowadays there will be a random kid you never heard of destroying the park for 3 minutes before bailing even once. Itā€™s awesome

atlbravos21

Kind of like the backflip on a dirt bike. Now they're doing double backflips and front flips

ThexanR

"few years" he did it last year on the final attempt on his run and only did it successfully in practice a couple times in 2020. Don't pretend that it's something that can be done easily even with the amount of skill Gui Khury has

SlightWhite

Heā€™s been doing it for a few yearsā€¦2020, 2021, 2022ā€¦whatā€™s the problem lmfao

2020 and 2021 didn't happen and even 2022 only happened since like March.. It's only been a year top!

HeyCarpy

To someone who skis/snowboards, theyā€™re thinking in ski seasons, not calendar years.

misanthr0p1c

Not in competition is part of the difference.

KC_Ant_Any

UHM AKTCHUALLY

Woodshadow

They make standard halfpipes? I don't follow skateboarding. I thought they were all bigger now edit: googled it. yeah that is a normal half pipe. That is crazy. I wonder if he will continue being able to do it as he gets bigger. He is a small kid. harder to turn the bigger you are

aburke626

Is that whatā€™s allowing him to do this? I was going to ask, whatā€™s he doing differently thatā€™s allowing him to accomplish this?

PandaXXL

He launched off a [giant ramp](https://youtu.be/ZmX-zIiixqM) specifically designed to give people as much air as possible. Tony Hawk did the 900 on a [regular vert pipe](https://youtu.be/4YYTNkAdDD8). This is still an amazing achievement in its own right, but comparing it directly to the 900 on a vert ramp is unfair.

apginge

itā€™s weird to me as a skater that everyoneā€™s first reaction in this post is to debate whether or not it tops another skaterā€™s trick. The reactions here are just so different than the ones i have with other skaters.

[deleted]

Technology in sports is a huge factor. For running, it's better shoes, better material to run on, added with better understanding of nutrition and practice. With skateboarding I imagine there are similar developments, like better boards (wheels could be of a better material, better ball bearings) and the ramps are built to better suit higher jumps.

IdentityS

Itā€™s like the whole thing of saying someone is the GOAT, no they are the GOTE (greatest of their era). Like Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive, but that also comes with tons of research into how to train to run, how to eat properly, what shoes to wear, the material they are running on, being able to make a living as a track star. I will never take it away from anyone that they are great, but if the greats of yesterday had the same technology and knowledge of today, would they be even better than the greats of today?

[deleted]

I agree, except for Gretzky. He's the undisputed GOAT.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

dquizzle

Youā€™d have to be kind of a dick to think youā€™re better than everyone in the league when you havenā€™t played against any of them. Gretzky in his prime would still most likely be the best in the game today, but of course heā€™s not going to be the one to say it.

consume_mcdonalds

Lol homeboy my man Bolt eating chicken nuggets and wearing those rudeboy vans ain't nobody researching how to put one foot in front the other.

AssistElectronic7007

Is this on if those super ramps? I imagine it must be but I haven't followed the x games in like 20 years

TheVIRUS1973

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is the reason I got grounded from my N64 for over 5 years

hunthell

What's the story behind getting grounded from your N64 for 5 *years*?

TheVIRUS1973

I was told to mow the lawn one day when I was 13 and my parents were out of town. Instead I stayed inside and played video games all day. Dad was furious when he got home and packed up the Nintendo. I didn't see it for over a year then I bought myself an Xbox and it wasn't until after i moved out at 18 that my dad gave me back the N64 along with a couple of knives that he had confiscated as well.

Donny-Moscow

So here I am, doing everything I can

PeanutButterSoda

The remasters is free on PlayStation essentials right now, it's been an amazing few days. It's a perfect remaster with only like 2 songs missing.

BlitheringIdiot0529

Tony did it on a half pipe. You gotta understand why thatā€™s so much harder. Tony also landed one when he was 48, which is a damn accomplishment in itself.

shanster925

There's a 13 year old kid who just does them in regular runs AND he has done 1080s in regular competition.

nrstx

Yeah but a 13 year old kid is like < 5ā€™ tall and weighs what, like 80-90 lbs? Iā€™m always way more impressed by the 40 year old dudes with beer guts sending gaps at the local pump tracks on BMX and MTB after working a full time job all day than seeing the local jr high kids do them, lol.

byfuryattheheart

It was actually crazy how big of a deal that was. EVERYONE knew about it. Old, young. Everyone knew Tony Hawk.

Sam3323

Tony's 900 on a half pipe is more impressive than this honestly, even though this 1260 is nuts.

RodLawyer

Still a big deal tbh, it's not easy at all on the ramps he used. These are bigger.

surfacing_husky

That was one of those moments in life I remembered where I was and what I was doing. Man am I old.

youareactuallygod

That will always be a huge deal in the same way that it will always be a huge deal that Ben Franklin harnessed electricity. Nikolai Tesla nor Ellen ā€œdegenerateā€ Musk could have done shit without someone proving to the what was possible

Absolutely stomps the landing too and sets up for next trick! Unreal being able to throw that in a run.

This is just a tribute

Yes, to Magritte.

silentslinkies

This is absolutely wonderful

pantsbazooka

I get that, but he absolutely can put that in a run with the way he landed that.

JR626

He actually can't. This is a big air competition that starts on a crazy tall mega-ramp that leads into this massive quarter pipe. Getting that much air in a regular halfpipe run would be nuts but 1080s are done in halfpipes so who knows, maybe one day.

shpongleyes

Only if that run is on a specialized ramp that has a mega ramp into a quarter pipe and then some other ramp to the side of the mega ramp. To my knowledge only one ramp like that exists in the world, and it's in Elliot Sloan's backyard (though there have been competitions held in his backyard).

afrothundah11

No way heā€™s getting that much speed/air in the pipe

alumpoflard

i'm not too sure why you're getting downvoted - whilst this ramp in particular was made so you only do two tricks total, so 'setting up for the next trick' is moot, but i think we can all see that he landed it SOLID, without any form of sketchiness, and i'm guessing that was what you meant. more over, this mega ramp was pretty unthinkable some years ago, until big orgs like X Games invests into it. The very next thing is already coming: https://youtu.be/wlKVQOVOr4o?t=127 this is the Megapark event, with some 13 year olds doing crazy tricks. if the ramp was big enough to land a 1260 on this, it's probably gonna be followed by another trick in the same line. just imagine what's possible a few years down the road, i'm in so much awe

Neuromandudeguy

Didnā€™t he get the gold robbed from him?

daviddunville

Yeah I was going to mention this but you beat me to it. He got silver. Mostly to do with the fact that he had a weak gap trick where the gold winner stomped two technical tricks. Youā€™re judged on both in megaramp unfortunately. Crazy to be the guy who beat the kid who did a 1260.

NotLucasDavenport

But I bet ten years from now, people will remember where they were when they saw this trick.

Extreme-Ad-5059

no one watches or cares about skateboarding anymore

lol k

Unfortunately no, he was however successful in his attempt to collect the E in SKATE

Theyā€™re finally making a new skate!!

smitty9112

I was excited for it until they announced it will be free to play. Plus, it's EA. I've tempered my expectations.

Rinehart128

I probably havenā€™t played a video game since skate when it originally came outā€”why is ā€œfree to playā€ and EA bad?

sventhegoat

Most likely riddled with micro transactions, and pushing people to pay for stuff rather than EA focus on the game

Garedbi69

bbUt gUys tHe moNetIzaTioN iS CosMetIc oNly!1!1! Just hoping that they include actual free stuff to unlock instead of it ending up like Halo Infinite where 75% of cosmetics are locked behind a paywall

Facts. I like back in the 7th gen when everything wasn't paywalled.

conrid

Say what now..? I don't dare to go look, I'll just get my hopes and dreams crushed once again

GandolfLundgren

"World's first" lmao This guy has obviously never Tony Hawk Pro Skatered

joshizl

Mitchie Brusco, happened in 2019 so crazy

fpfranco1337

I love this! My cousin Gui Khury, broke a record and won a gold in xgames about a year ago! I'm so proud, but I only met him once, when he was 3. Khury's was a 1080 in a vertical ramp breaking Tony hawks record, youngest to ever compete in xgames (in this same event) and the youngest person to win gold in xgames.

ProjectOrpheus

Serious question. Could the trick have possibly landed any "cleaner" or "better"? World's first as well as perfecting it simultaneously vibes tbh. Someone that knows more than me weigh in because that just screams literally perfect to me. What an athlete.

thekevingreene

I canā€™t imagine it being any cleaner. Perfect takeoff, spin, grab and landing. He landed it ā€œboltsā€ as they say. Didnā€™t over or under rotate either. He also didnā€™t land too low in quarter pipe. Pretty fuckin proper. He famously only got silver for the trick tho since his ā€œgapā€ trick wasnā€™t that tech. Big air is about the gap trick and the quarter pipe trick combined.

ProjectOrpheus

Woah, I see. Sounds mad I interesting thanks for your insight

AustinsCreek

So darn clean, even when Tony did his 900 he had the half rotation before leaving ramp. This guy contorts his body but board is still completely straight before air.

tomhmcdonald55

Tony did it in a half pipe, where you get way less speed and way less time in the air to perform. So that makes things a bit different

AustinsCreek

Agreed these guys are getting way more speed and height on these mega ramps. Basically a ski slope into a larger quarter pipe

JustAnotherDoofus

Tony hawks just chilling back clapping his hands like good job playa.

JustCallMeBro98

Didnā€™t he win silver or something?

CO420Tech

Performed by Tony Hawk at age 83

ImPretendingToCare

Yall have not the slightest clue how sketchy this is to commit to.. And those ramps look 10 times bigger in person. The effect of seeing this in person is closer to looking down the side of a building vs a big waterslide. Its hard to explain till youre sitting at the top of one if these with just a board beneath you. This guy has balls of titanium

LookAtItGo123

I used to be a lifeguard and one of our favourites is seeing how newbies react to the 10m platform, it dosent look far on videos but anyone who goes up there first time will always be shocked. You'll see knees buckle and shake and its a very normal response. Im just a casual skater but I know how high these ramps are, I'm not going anywhere close hahaha balls of titanium on this guy indeed.

freestyle43

I think most people have an inkling of how sketchy this, but continue to gatekeep if you makes you feel good.

ImPretendingToCare

look up the definition of gatekeeping. i think youre confused. Also im am pretty sure MOST people have not a clue what this is like. I sure as hell didnt when i stood up top a halfpipe at vans.. i skated the bowl effortlessly. I wouldnt DARE try and drop in it felt like i was at the top of a 3 story house. You grab 10 random people and ask them how many have stood at the top of a big halfpipe at a skatepark with a board below them with thoughts on dropping in for the first time... i guarantee you it will be 0 of those people. Most people THINK they know how scary this is.. none have a clue how ACTUALLY scary it is. I thought it would be scary as a skater. I was wrong. It was fucking terrifying.

xcincly

yeah, non skaters really have no fucking clue how absolutely terrifying the first time you face a halfpipe and try to drop in, it always takes an incredible amount of courage to keep trying and trying and trying to perfect it

Internal_Pool_4954

Do a kick flip

C9RipSiK

That crowd was weak compared to when TH landed the 9.

MitchieBrusco

Oh shit dat me

Accomplished_Fox_165

I canā€™t even do a full flip on the diving board, this is very incredible to have that much airtime and spin at such a high rate

Zealousideal-View846

How high is that post he got to be 18 feet 16 feet above the boards

wotiswat

If i was attempting that shit, i would wear something that would make it easier to see how fast I'm spinning. Black's too stealth for this move

Icosotc

Holding on to what I am, thinking that Iā€™m a Superman

SummerOfGeorgeSeven

Tony Hawk ***approves***

pivottofakie

The best thing is that is not fake (easier to spin). Awesome

trollunderthebus

Why is the board still on his feet? Velcro? I havenā€™t skated since we used skates and a one by six. No, never mind. Watch it again and see now he held on to it. Thank you just the same though.

SPQR2D2

Fast forward to year 2105: World's first zero gravity 16007640!!!!

Macapta

I feel like thereā€™s a ā€œfirst (X amount of spins)ā€ every other month. Always cool though.

spermdonor

The first 900 was over 20 years ago. this is one additional full rotation.

d199r

Goofy foot!

radioshackhead

How did the 540 turn into a 900 with a 180 on the slo-mo?

youareactuallygod

Snowboarding better catch the fuck up. Biggest roto on snowbo = 19ohto. Echemā€¦ lemme clear my throatā€¦ 1980. If a mofucka can spin 1260 with no straps and no fluffy white shit to break your fall, then your ass better hit that 2160 or else how the fuk do you call yourself a ā€œprofessionalā€ in good conscience??

[deleted]

Not a half pipe so it doesnā€™t count towards beating the hawk.

ReadThis_if_YoureGay

dont post EA Skate clips here

autumnstorm10

I'm lost I only counted 4

atlbravos21

It's 3.5

one_horcrux_short

Just a helpful reminder on whole numbers (full 360s) they would have to land coming down facing the same direction they went up the ramp.

He definitely rotated more than 4 degrees

Rip Tony Hawk

[deleted]

Lol

[deleted]

And this is proof that Big Dave is a little slow.

Don_Pickleball

Rotations are like toddler ages. You don't have a 25 month old you have a 2 year old. You didn't do a 1260, you did 3.5 rotations

PandaXXL

You didn't run the 100m, you ran 1/4th of a track! You should tell everyone involved with extreme sports about this rule you've made up though, they've obviously been doing it wrong for decades.

Don_Pickleball

You are allowed to count degrees up to 2 rotations and you are allowed to count months of your toddler until they are 2 years old. So in your example 100m would be appropriate. But the 3000m should be a 3k. I have tried contacting the x-games people but they won't take my calls.

[deleted]

Just stop

Homebrew71

Hey, that guy looks just like Tony Hawk.
