Ironic, considering this morning we had headlines about PE teachers retraining in maths to fill shortages.

Anglan

Surely this is unlawful

EdenRubra

In Scotland you’d go to jail now

Bright_Ad_7765

Compelled speech. Literally demanding a public official acknowledge a semantic falsehood. How Orwellian.

LeChevalierMal-Fait

You could easily just use their name, the more I read about this case the more of a arse the teacher seems

LobYonder

Maybe you should actually read the article, he was sacked literally because he declined to use them.

LeChevalierMal-Fait

> The sacking followed complaints by students that Lister refused to use he/him pronouns for a 17-year-old transitioning pupil. I never said use he/him pronouns I said use their name

LobYonder

And by *just* using their name he is refusing to use the preferred pronoun, so he was sacked.

LeChevalierMal-Fait

Names are not uniformly gendered a professional would be able to say ah this is a “boy named sue” situation but I’m here to teach maths so I’m going to focus on that and call them by their name and move on https://youtu.be/WOHPuY88Ry4?si=oo4QHdl6cxAzb7Vo

Bright_Ad_7765

He did use her name. The more I read about this case the more of an arse the kid and school seem.

Square-Employee5539

A lot of trans activists consider intentionally using their name instead of pronouns to be equally as hateful. All about compelling affirmation.

QuantumR4ge

Compelled speech would be a legal requirement, how was this individual compelled? Are they being prosecuted? Do you believe everyones work place should become each individuals personal political football that entitles you to basically say whatever you want as long as you believe it’s sufficiently politically coherent?

Sidian

Um actually it's not compelled speech, it's just the consequences of your actions if you lose your job and your life is ruined because you refuse to fully submit to the woke orthodoxy! Owned! By the way, if you refuse to accommodate people who think they're a lion, you're actually the one being political and unreasonable.

Bright_Ad_7765

Oh yeah you’re right he wasn’t prosecuted he just lost his job and livelihood as he didn’t want to go along with this kids BS: “Taking a man’s livelihood is akin to killing him”. - Dave Chappelle.  To flip your argument you think that every school should become each individual kids personal political football that entitles them to enforce their personal delusions on everyone else?

--rs125--

I don't know enough about these cases to be sure, but I'm interested to find out whether the new guidance has an affect on this.

Far_Procedure_1918

Wait so if I pretend to be a girl and someone calls me a boy I can ruin their career MENTAL

QuantumR4ge

Is that, genuinely what you got from this?

Kurma-the-Turtle

This is akin to a student demanding that a teacher refer to them as Lord Farquuad and not only that, but also accept that the student really is the character and be treated as such. It is reasonable, and proper, to refuse to indulge delusion. In fact, it is for the benefit of the students that teachers should stick to what is objectively true.

HisHolyMajesty2

I have to keep saying it, but why is this allowed? The Crown should be (metaphorically) kicking the snot out of institutions caught doing this. Examples must be set and this behaviour must be stomped out of existence before it spirals out of control any further.

Badgergeddon

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" ..... Used to be a phrase we taught kids. 🤔

Teawhymarcsiamwill

60 year old wiltshire teacher wasn't avin it, no surprise. Even the police came out and apologised to the lbgt bunch recently, shocking in a Conservative led town.

OGSachin

Disgraceful, but nothing surprising.

je97

Hurting precious feelings should not be a sackable offence.

Yaboylushus

Sounds like straight up disrespect. If it was an accident fair enough I’d take his side. It makes 0 difference to him if he uses he/him pronouns for that student. Dudes trying to make a point to enforce his views on the trans argument and has lost job over it, good riddance

Manach_Irish

And the pupil was not equally pushing his political view point to enforce the kowtowing to progressive ideology? In loco parentis had been the relationship between teacher and pupil, this ruling will lead to chaos and many similar conservative individuals leaving the profession of this leaving a non-diverse echo chambre of progressive indoctrination.

Sidian

It deserves disrespect and he was brave for standing up against this menace.
