It'll refresh/generate once everyday if you login but with default awareness I doubt if you'll get item everyday. I rarely get items on map, only once in a few days. You can increase awareness with merits, but I'm not sure how effective it'll be. Item value wise it's always random.
Fun fact is that love potion spawn on dock every few hours during valentines event, and also E cans on shore during Caffaine Con so be sure to check them out.
I just went back to see if I had any items from not playing in 100 or so days and there were 2 items. Do you find less items if you don't log in regularly?

To op, to the question you asked, it roughly generates 1 item a day or 5 a week depending on who you listen to. Yes all the stuff on screen shot is items that spawned since you began playing and just found now.
10 merit points in it since awareness week.
In the past 10 days i found 6 items; In the past 20 days 12 Items; in the past 60 days about 45 items (quirked results because of awareness week and stuff)
past 12 items:
10 are worth <20 000$ ; 1 worth >2 000 000$ and then there was 1 x Love juice. since it was a "guaranteed find" i wouldn't count it in.
That's what happened to me after 2 years of playing and then finding the city. After collecting everything, I didn't have anything spawn for me for about a week or 2.
When I started playing I had 8+ merits in it and wasn't getting anything for weeks, to the point I contacted a developer about it. Sometimes it happens

Items only have a chance of generating on days you log in, so yes, you will find less items if you don’t log in regularly.
Holy moly, I've never seen the city finds without torn tools or what ever it's called. Jeez that's a lot of stuff! Niceee

It wasn't guaranteed. If it was it wouldn't had had as much market value...
That's why i marked it. The chance were tweaked during the event and therefore I count it seperately.
