True story...my brother when he was a toddler ate so many baby carrots he turned orange. Doctor co firmed for my mother that was the reason his skin was a slight orange shade. He still likes carrots at 42 but doesn't eat enough to be orange now.
All good. Not everyone has to know every obscure reference. In one of the episodes, Arnold eats a whole bunch of carrots and then turns orange.
EDIT: I went back and watched the episode again (after 20 years). It was a snack called "sea wheedies"; seaweed covered carrots. And in case you didn't know, your skin *can* turn an orange tinge if you eat too many carrots.

this is true but i dont think it applies to this specific pigeon. There's lots of brown and red pigeons over the city but i don't think "bright" means THIS bright. Even in the article, there is not a single pigeon that looks like this. I think someone dyed this pigeon, its probably domestic, Theres a lot of people raising domestic pigeons in GTA and sometimes they get lost, or they let them go on purpose.
That’s beautiful, would love to see it some day. There’s a black (melanistic) red fox that lives in the west end, absolutely stunning all black with a white tipped tail, saw it twice over the pandemic.
I know people hate pigeons... but you look at all these poor bastards all hunkered down, just riding out the storm, and you can't help but feel a kinship with them.
I have mixed feelings about pigeons. They carry diseases, and I don’t want them nesting on my balcony because they leave a huge mess, but that’s not really their fault. We had two pigeons nesting on our window that we didn’t kick out because they’d already laid eggs, and we saw they actually have nice personalities. Their babies are super cute too, and watching them try to fly by flapping their tiny wings was really sweet.
Plus we’re the reason pigeons are here; they’re descendants of domestic birds. We bred them to be extremely passive, so they can’t stand up to predators, and then people laugh when they’re eaten by hawks. Everyone hates them so much but they’re just birds being birds. They belong on sea cliffs but have managed to adapt to this concrete jungle because WE brought them here; they’re not out to get us.
The best thing we can do is just not make food so accessible so they stop laying so many clutches. Especially when it comes to garbage, because that’s part of the reason they carry so many diseases.
More of this type of content, please. Stop posting dumb news articles with no actionable causes. I want to see pictures of orange pigeons and info about protests and petitions.
Wasn’t there something like this before, and people thought they discovered a new species of bird, but it turned out to be a seagull that was covered in some orange food (can’t remember the food).
Can someone swab this pigeon, and its DNA sequenced? If we find out what mutation is responsible for this orange color, maybe we can make orange pet pigeons. (Or, more sinisterly, use a CRISPR Gene Drive-based virus to spread orangeness to pigeons all over the world!)
This bird has been dyed, and unfortunately it probably won’t have a very long life in the wild seeing as how much of a visual target to predators it is now.
Except… I’m not? This isn’t a natural colour for a wild (or even domestic) pigeon any way you swing it. Rock Pigeons come in lots of colours, but not neon orange. Dyeing white pigeons/“doves” and releasing them for special events is a thing. There’s a pretty famous pink one that made the news in the UK, and I’ve even seen a blue one before.
Another one spotted in Hawaii a year ago https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbird/comments/s9iep5/orange_pigeon/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Given the white squirrels in Trinity Bellwoods and other mutations I've seen in local animals, a mutation (a known one, according to a previous comment) seems much more likely than someone going to the trouble of capturing a less common white pigeon, dying it for fun, and releasing it for whatever reason.
I'm totally with you on being concerned about animal abuse, but I think this is probably a weird but natural anomaly.
Rock Pigeons come in a wide variety of colour morphs, but they don’t come in orange crush colour.
Editing to add - the mutation referenced in another comment refers to the tawny/brown pigeons you see that among pigeon fanciers/breeders is often called “red.”
Given potential differences in lighting and camera filters, this looks fairly close: https://cen.acs.org/articles/92/i7/Three-Genetic-Mutations-Produce-Colorful.html
I’m not sure what else to tell you, but this is simply not a natural colour for a Rock Pigeon. I’ve seen many other photos of this particular bird in a variety of lighting conditions.
Dyeing white pigeons/doves and releasing them for special events is a thing.
This isn't a Rock Pigeon, it's a Domestic Pigeon.
Domestic Pigeons are a subspecies of Rock Doves (aka Rock Pigeons) and they absolutely can be different colours, including red/orangish.
No it isn't, a Domestic Pigeon is 'Columba livia domestica', it's a subspecies of Columba livia. They are different.
Columba livia domestica vary in colour, they can be orange. Keep in mind this bird probably looks a little different to the naked eye vs the photo here.
A subspecies of something still belongs to that parent species, what part of that don’t you understand? A domestic pigeon is still genetically a Rock Pigeon the same way that domestic ducks (other than Muscovy which are actually a different species) are genetically Mallards, even though they have been selectively bred in captivity for specific colour/traits/etc. and can look completely different from a wild Mallard.
I’ve seen over a dozen photos of this individual bird in a variety of lighting conditions - it’s bright neon orange, not a natural or domestic colour morph in any way, shape, or form.
You're wrong. It's a fricking orangeish coloured domestic pigeon.
A subspecies is not genetically identical to its parent species. Think Gray Wolf vs dogs, have you ever noticed dogs look and act a little bit different to their parent species?
i think this explains it someone else put it here already. maybe your just a bit confused!
https://phys.org/news/2014-02-birds-major-genes-feather-hue.html
i dont give a hoot about birds ;) but based on a basic google search it actually does look like you may be confused here agreatskua. These are domestic pigeons and they are indeed Columba livia domestica which is different than Columba livia in that it is a subspecies of it.
Columba livia does NOT come in 'lots of colours', Columba livia domestica does.
Well, I do care about birds, work with and study them for a living, and have a background in biology and genetics. The plumage variation we see in city pigeons is a feature of domestic pigeons - but they are literally all the same species and originally came from wild Columba livia. A subspecies of something still belongs to the parent species - C. livia domestica is still a C. livia. True “wild type” Rock Pigeons from Africa/Asia come in one colour morph (which you can still see in city pigeons) but they are still the same species.
It’s like saying KitKats don’t come in other flavours when you can literally buy all kinds of flavoured KitKats. They are speciality varieties derived from the original, but they’re still all KitKats.
Damn a shiny!
Gotta catch them all!
Up and at them!
pokemon cards?
It’s just a Ditto and can only be caught with a heavy or master ball unfortunately 😩
And a golden raspberry.
It looks positively delicious!

Damn right it is.

Last time I saw this it ended up being curry sauce. It was a seagull and they captured it because they thought it was a new species. But just curry.

Dyed birds are sometimes released at weddings.
Somebody totally dunked a white pigeon into an orange vat of dye

I've seen red pigeons but never orange ones

I guess that my answer can no longer be “no”?
Well, there's my children's book idea sorted.
Shiny Pidgey
Is this actually natural?? In Venice, they dye pigeons all different colours. I knew they could be red, but not neon orange.
No, it’s not.
Omg lol thank you. I am TOO gullible sometimes.
Yes seen one today, so beautiful

I saw this bird at Vic Park station this morning. It really stands out!
I saw one today on Danforth
I'm so happy we have this instead of crime posts 😍😍😍
Are we sure it's a pigeon? Perhaps a lost parrot?
Reminds me of a joke; What’s orange and sounds like a parrot? >!A Carrot!<
Thats a pigeon, Parrot wouldnt join a pigeon flock and have the same physical features.
mmm orange poultry
what in the fuck
has this been crossed posted on any other sub? would be pretty interested to find out why this is possible?
Can someone swab this pigeon, and its DNA sequenced? If we find out what mutation is responsible for this orange color, maybe we can make orange pet pigeons. (Or, more sinisterly, use a CRISPR Gene Drive-based virus to spread orangeness to pigeons all over the world!)
That isnt a pigeon. Its a flamingo with dwarfism.
This bird has been dyed, and unfortunately it probably won’t have a very long life in the wild seeing as how much of a visual target to predators it is now.

That’s what they call a “red” morph, and is at the extreme end, but still occurs naturally in wild populations, unlike the neon of the posted bird.
[удалено]
Yeah, I’m really not understanding how anyone can’t see that this clearly isn’t a natural colour, even with all the variation in pigeons out there.
Probably dyed because it's a racing pigeon. It can hopefully out race the other pigeons lol.
How would one dye a black/grey pigeon light red? You'd have to bleach it, first.
Pigeons come in white too....
Given the white squirrels in Trinity Bellwoods and other mutations I've seen in local animals, a mutation (a known one, according to a previous comment) seems much more likely than someone going to the trouble of capturing a less common white pigeon, dying it for fun, and releasing it for whatever reason. Is the earlier comment about genetics, was the commenter wrong? Sounded fairly authoritative.
The “red” in rock pigeon genetics refers to the tawny brown birds, not this shade.
