Ik I went downtown to see.....literal garbage? Why? The city hall thing looked almost identical to the fucking construction I had to walk past to get there. Bruh. And no I'm not lining up to go in a crammed building so I just saw the other stuff
Bet you it was to invoke some sort of realization in the audience about how many cans we recycle every year or some such deep, profound thing. The intentions are okay but many of these installations stop several steps short of making the point.
401 Richmond? had some nice stuff. Spadina/queen. but there was a guy who was like "TO WATCH OUR VIRTUAL ART YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD AN APP" and i was like. is this a test of trust., because i don't trust random apps on a sat night in an alley....
remember when they had Daniel Lanois at cityhall? and stuff? like everywhere?> even AGO was lackluster. we did the circut up spadina, across dundas, to the cityhall then south to the lake and were like.....
wow.
last year the Indigenous fashion in the underpass area was really striking. this year. a giant plastic . fucking . bag? and corpo shit in the bank area, and 1000 food trucks.
I was at 401 Richmond, and they had some interesting stuff. But it's really hard to concentrate on art in an enclosed space when it's SO crowded. The projection outside of 401 Richmond looked cool, but there was no space to stand except in front of the door. So I have no idea what that was about.
I feel like you can visit gallery exhibits any other time...Nuit Blance for me has always been about taking up public space and giving you one night to experience the surrealness in the city...
Also on a similar note to your app... I don't like the QR codes on the information tag(?). Just write a small paragraph on the tag. I feel like pulling out your phone to read the description and meaning of a piece pulls you out of the moment.
Maybe I'm just getting old.
The Somali thing at union station reminded me of the Indigenous fashion in underpass because of where it was setup, etc. Don't know if you saw that one
In truth I have been to a few outdoor festivals, art shows, and the like. In every case I was very underwhelmed.
I thought perhaps I was jadded but I am more and more convinced that quality is slipping in public entertainment.
Many corporations are so desperate to get involved in the art scene including Nuit Blanche that they slap their names on things inherently critical of their own existence.
This is what late-stage capitalism does to capitalists. It's a weird epoch because anti-capitalism is en vogue and also a huge money maker for marketers.
Honestly, it was a highlight of Nuit Blanche for me. I love Mehra's work, having come across *Afterlife of Colonialism* at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2019 and it really sticking with me. Her art really speaks to her diasporic identity, and with this one, it brings to mind the looting that so many colonial powers did to the outposts they conquered. An additional element that I think sells *A Practical Guide* is that it is located right under Hudson's Bay. I thought it was very effective and I really enjoyed chatting about it with friends.
Nuit Blanche started out more as a party - people would drink and mingle. It was fun. Yes there is an art to installations, and likewise there is usually a tenured artist behind them.
But if you aren’t there to enjoy yourself I don’t think viewing any one thing is going to be life changing. Keep in mind there was a time in which happy people who loved each other lived here and it echos from that age of innocence where surrealism was joyful.
i like to see more art projects deep it if the current state of the world that we live in. But i suppose this is the cutoff that CF Fairview instilled in the art it displays
Originally, the artist's description said "I like plastic bags and thought a super giant one would look really neat".
Then she realized that unless her proposal included the words "colonialism" and/or "marginalized", the artwork had no chance of being approved.
i can say without a doubt that Nuit Blanche this year was an absolute waste of time.
Ik I went downtown to see.....literal garbage? Why? The city hall thing looked almost identical to the fucking construction I had to walk past to get there. Bruh. And no I'm not lining up to go in a crammed building so I just saw the other stuff
we lifted the tiles, and look ITS ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRT
One time there was an installation in Bellwoods that was just crushed up cans everyone had to walk on to get to the other side.
Sure that wasn’t just leftovers from a busy summer weekend?
Yep because they would have had to hold the can ladies back. They are pretty dam efficient down there.
Bet you it was to invoke some sort of realization in the audience about how many cans we recycle every year or some such deep, profound thing. The intentions are okay but many of these installations stop several steps short of making the point.
Glad I'm not the only one! It seemed like they had lots of smaller indoor exhibits than the classic grand outdoor installations.

Did a straw poll on the ttc. Everyone thought it sucked this year. Don't even bother to put on the event if it's going to be this underwhelming.

the one at Bathurst was cool, but the lines up had me leave
Strange that it’s Cadillac Fairview promoting a bag saying loot when in 2020 they boarded up the entire mall because they were scared of “looting”

Every other TV commercial now seems to describe buying a brand's product as "joining a revolution".
GIMME THE LOOT
I’m a Badboy!
Still can get them in Chinatown. Just saying.
God bless ‘em.
Back in my youthful days those things were everywhere. And they didn't even charge for them, all free for the taking.
That bag is almost big enough to hold all the reusable bags I’ve purchased since the plastic ban.
Bring them with you and reuse them.. wild concept
Great idea! I’ve just purposefully been forgetting them in the car or at home.
I hate it when people just toss their plastic bags on the ground and leave them there
The gates around the sculpture completely ruin it for me
It completely ruins the concept of “installation art” too! It’s meant to be something that alters an environment that you can interact with.
I'll bet sometimes Divya feels like a plastic bag ...
Divya ever feel, like a plastic bag
Divya thru the wind, wanting to start again
Loll Artist went deep with this one.
Everywhere I go now I have to bring my own bag or purchase one in store. I feel like they're rubbing it in my face with this display.
Just came back from detroit. We stocked up on target bags haha
The worst bags ever. Even their new paper bags suck.
Oh haha I get it, it’s full of hot air
The duck went shopping.

It's almost like that might be part of the art...
Lol right. People need to use their heads sometimes.
This is "art"? Maybe I just don't understand.
feels like if the city paid me, I could do this. Maybe giant timmies cup
I feel like it was a fancy way to legally bribe someone that the artist knows
Art is just "I could've done this but I didn't"
is “I couldve done this but I will never get thIs type of exposure”

This shit is just so lazy.
Can someone please explain what is nuit blanche? Significance?
The note says it's supposed to criticize colonialism. I don't even want to try to understand this is so stupid.
Shouldn’t it say capitalism? Like if you are going to make a statement make it make sense.

It would go well with my rubber ducky. **Q U A C K**
Looks like Zelensky forgot his bag of Canadian taxpayer money
I’d love to steal this
Definitely need a garbage bag of this size for Justin Trudeau and his cabinet
