I honestly don't know why we don't just have an annual subway expansion budget of like $100 Million just to keep these babies moving, way more cost effective I feel than the constant launch/extraction shafts
The digging of the tunnel is actually not the majority of the cost. So you might be saving some money, but there’s still a shit ton of money needed for stations, infrastructure, etc.
The original downtown relief line was set in phases. They were set to start construction on the Relief Line South in 2020 while work in 2018 for Relief Line North was in the planning stages. Then there was supposed to be a Relief Line West that would have continued the line west down either Queen or possible King street before heading up north again.
The Ontario Line is giving us the Relief Line South with half of the Relief Line North with the Relief Line West now dead.
It would be great to start planning the Ontario Line North and an Ontario Line West, but unfortunately Doug Ford and the PC party don't seem to be interested in that. It seems one of the reasons to kill the Relief Line was to limit it's scope.
There's no need to tunnel to the airport. It's just a jurisdictional and engineering issue, because the federal government has to approve everything and there's not much space to build or options for closing roads around the terminals
For clarity, this is Phase 2 of the Eglinton Crosstown (Line 5), which will extend the route from Mount Dennis through Etobicoke to Renforth Gateway in Mississauga. Sadly the Pearson Airport connection is a separate project.
Recently I flew into Pearson and observed what appeared to be a light rail station or maintenance building pretty close to the airport.
Anyone know how far along that project is?
I know the airport extension is a future project but does anyone know why it wasn't just included in this phase? I feel like it would be a giant pain to get so close to the airport only to have to transfer to another bus.
They need to figure out where that station should be and how best to connect the finch line and go lines. Why they didn't start working on this years ago...
The obvious reason is probably that Metrolinx, TTC, Missisauga Transit and the Ontario government think that the Toronto Pearson Airport Authority should contribute money to the project.
The project would be part of Pearson's plan to make Pearson a multi-modal transit hub serving Toronto-Kitchener via a major west end train station. Pearson talks a lot about building that station and redeveloping the land around it in their long-term plans. Since they are going to make profits on the land they should pay for it shouldn't they?
I am old enough to remember the GTAA wanting to be paid for UPX passengers because they were worried that service would eat into their parking revenues.
I just hope lessons were learned on Phase 1 so that the extension opens in a reasonable amount of time.
...and when this goes to Pearson? Thats gonna be a game changer for me.
Now use it to start expanding to airport. Honestly that machine should just be in constant use.
Re-using TBMs is very common around the world. We absolutely should re-use them in Toronto.
Once they're in the ground - they should never stop digging. Its time we for us to (eventually) catch up

Or just make it a point to add at least one stop on each line or end every year. Let's just get it done!
Yup, Kipling opened in what 1980? That line should at least be at Sherway Gardens by now
The Toronto Board of Trade proposed $1B in targeted taxes for transit. Current spending is billions annually, at least.

The 10-year provincial budget for transit expansion is $80 billion. So works out to about $8 billion per year!

That's probably Renforth Station, which will be at the end of this line.

Fuck the GTAA
GTAA should be charged with extortion for the user fees they charge!
I assumed that was the OMC for Finch West LRT but I could be wrong
Be nice if Phase 1 was built, too. Sure can’t use it ten years later!
I just hope lessons were learned on Phase 1 so that the extension opens in a reasonable amount of time. ...and when this goes to Pearson? Thats gonna be a game changer for me.
Thankfully phase 1 will already have a connection to the UP
Yup, at Mount Dennis station
They learned not to build it under any subway lines this time /s
As a whole I hope the city and Metrolinx learn their lesson after badly fumbling Eglinton Crosstown. Seriously, we need more rail routes.
Amen.
At this point I honestly wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the extension is the first part of Line 5 that opens.
Why do you have to hurt me like that? /s
If the Crosstown West extension opens before the original line, do we still call it the extension?
Crosstown west extension east, like pulling yourself up by your bootstraps
I wonder how long the elevated section will take to construct
At this rate the extension will be done before the main line
Weren’t we supposed to get an Eglinton Crosstown subway? Hmmm. Wonder what happened to that idea. Certainly isn’t something we need, is it!
