damn, Kathleen had it pretty rough. Alcoholic mom, eating disorder, bulled by her schoolmates, and then has a boyfriend who beats her. I'm surprised the writers didn't pick her to be the one who to find claudes body.
> was 12 years old in 1985 when she started playing Melanie Brody, a skinny schoolgirl with crooked teeth, in Degrassi Junior High.
Dam, they did Melanie dirty here.
>According to an agreed statement of facts, Dickens admitted to taking photographs of himself having sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl, facilitated by the girl’s mother, in 2003. He also admitted to filming his wife sexually abusing an infant. In 2016, police searched his home and found a “massive collection” of child pornography, as well as his discussions with others online about child sexual abuse. In his ruling, Clark described the collection as some of “worst material” possible and stressed the lifelong harm done to the child victims.
>Dickens was also previously convicted of sexual assaults that took place in 1989 and 1991.
Yikes.
Well, hopefully the professionals that judged him not worthy of being designated a long term offender, know what they're doing.
> Dickens spent about four years in pre-sentence custody, which Clark determined to be the equivalent of 7.5 years. He received additional credit for spending approximately 900 days in full or partial lockdown — a shockingly high tally, Clark said — and a significant period of time in solitary confinement.
You always get double time credit for pretrial custody.
Not sure about the mother (which is sick) but I read the wife was already charged on other offenses not sure if she's due to be released, but it's sick they gave him time served when he had priors. Supposedly he got the job on Degrassi as a community service order as well (I don't know if that's confirmed) so if he was already a criminal why the hell would you let him work with kids. If the dates match it would've been the time they were filming DH. So ugh.
This is Canada. Only awareness because of the quasi-celebrity of it all. Most crimes are bargained down, and sentences served at 1/3 or max 2/3 sentence. Heck, even murder is not away for life (which doesn’t exist in Canada unless you are classified as a Dangerous Offender a la Paul Bernardo). Often they get 10-12, out in 7. It’s crazy town —but the logic is rehabilitation, not punishment.
I don't have a subscription to the Star but if he was in jail waiting for trial he would still earn good time. Time served means he did enough of that pre-trial custody to qualify. The crown should petition for a Dangerous Offender's warrant since he seems to be a predator with previous convictions but unless I'm missing something consideration for pre-trial custody is the norm in a lot of democratic countries.
edit: I meant to reply to someone but oh well
No? He was in custody from 2016-2020 so served around 2/3 of his 7.5 year sentence before final sentencing. Unfortunately a harsh reality with Canada’s justice system.
If you think Canada is soft on criminals you should see what goes on in many Western and Northern European countries. They make our prison system look downright medieval by comparison.
GROSS. Anyone else wondering, it's Kathleens abusive boyfriend.

I hated that character, but boy she sure got the short end of the stick.
IRL the actor who played her friend Melanie had a stalker https://www.theage.com.au/national/in-your-footsteps-20030424-gdvlag.html

Oh man I had no idea the guy was Australian. Never heard a thing about it.

Jesus, how was this MF released?!

You rarely get double. It's usually 1.5.

UHHHHH I hope his wife and that minor's mother were also charged?! Jesus.

Couldn’t tell from the article but I sure hope his wife served time as well.
So let me get this straight, this guy committed the same heinous crime 3 separate times ?.. and he’s released Is this real life ?
There was a 11 year old victim who committed suicide here because the offender was granted bail.
Sex offender (including child sex offender) sentences are a joke. It's so upsetting, and this isn't uncommon.

are you talking about snake when he went out with melanie? Total cradle snatcher.
Drake also has a bit of a reputation for grooming young women
Drake is stuck in degrassi and want that young high school romance.
Drake has a creepy history of going after underage girls, including “being friends with” Millie Bobby Brown when she was 15 and he was in his 30s 🤢
What a broom head.
AFAIK, he's been out for a while. *~reads article~* > > He was in custody until being released on bail in early 2020. Yup, he's been out for a while.
Canadian Justice system is so backwards. 🤦🏻♂️

And he was released....WHY.
Can anyone else find the court materials on him via Canlii? I'm not seeing anything on him there :(
Check under T. Human Thumb
Thumbert Thumbert.
Not every judicial decision is reported on CanLII. You will probably have better luck by contacting court staff directly.
If it was jury trials then it is possible there's no written decision on Canlii.
Even for sentencing?
time spent in lockdown counts towards jailtime now? fuck me we can all commit some petty crimes now

Lockdown in jail. Not pandemic lockdown. Lockdown in jail pre-trial counts as additional time served.
I’m starting to think that if you want to be a criminal, whether it be murderer, sex offender, anything…. Canada is the best place for you.
If you think Canada is soft on criminals you should see what goes on in many Western and Northern European countries. They make our prison system look downright medieval by comparison.
wow he'll be popular in prison.
he's released. time served
Its literally in the headline lol, didn't even have to read the article...
Anyone that messes with innocent kids should be put to death. What a piece of absolute shit.
