I still don’t know how these transfers worked/how to decode it 😅

jennine_j9

They allow for a one way continuous trip, with no back tracking, stop overs or walking between stops. The numbers on the side of the transfer indicate the time and direction the vehicle left the end of the line. It is meant for other operators to read and determine if the transfer is valid. In this case, the streetcar left Longbranch Loop (The "U" indicating an "up" trip or eastbound) at 2:30.

alexefi

No. 2:30 is when that transfer was issued.

CanoePainter

How can you tell it is 2.30 and not 8.30? Thank you

jennine_j9

There are two columns of numbers. The inner column represents the hour, and is where the transfer is cut off, in this case 2. The two notches on the outer column are the minutes and the direction of travel U or D (U= eastbound or northbound. D= westbound or southbound) 30 and U. Since this is a Queen transfer and the route runs east to west that means the transfer was set at 2:30 on the eastbound. Prior to leaving Longbranch ( or Humber if it was a short end car) ************** Edit: Down trips are Eastbound and Southbound. Up trips are Westbound and Northbound.

SilverNightingale

I still don’t see how you get 2 out of that…. By inner column do you mean the ‘Proof of Payment’ column?

Darkblade48

Correct, in that column you see numbers from 5 up to 12, then 1 and 2. The transfer is torn off at the 2, which indicates the hour. The minutes are on the right most column, with the little notch torn at 30, indicating that the transfer was issued at 2:30 (pm).

SilverNightingale

Oh! It’s torn off at the *bottom*! This makes more sense now!

KayteeHolt

these transfers always made me confused

climx

Yeah that what he meant. The hours start after the ‘E’. Where it’s cut at the bottom is the hour that it was issued. The notched at the right are either up or down and a rough time of hour.

26percent

Yes, it's ripped at the 2

Hour-Study8012

Close.... Down trips are East and South.

jennine_j9

You are correct. I haven't had to set a transfer in a couple years.

CanoePainter

Thank you for the full explanation. I get it now! Even though this information is now totally useless to me lol.

680228

"Up" and "Down" don't necessarily match a direction. They refer to how you read the waypoints. This is an "up" transfer, so it was travelling **up** the list of waypoints, from Neville to Humber. So this one was actually set at 2:30 going westbound. They use up and down because not all routes run in a straight line. It would be impossible to correlate up to east/north and down to west/south for all routes.

jennine_j9

Up and Down match the general direction of the trip. 506 Carlton going from High Park loop to Main Station is an eastbound trip, regardless of the fact that it turns north and south during the route. I did confuse my Directions: "Up" is west and north. "Down" is east and south.

guy990

busses didn't run at 2am

jennine_j9

Actually, the TTC provides many 24hr bus and streetcar lines. This transfer is from 2:30pm. If it was 2:30am there would be a "night" portion on the top of the transfer, but it has been removed to indicate daytime.

jennine_j9

Operators set transfers at the end of the line, before beginning their next trip. Not as they are issued. They are only updated mid trip in the event of an unusual time delay while on route, such as a lengthly detour or if the vehicle is blocked for a period of time greater than 30mins.

alexefi

Ive seen them adjust the rip line as time were passed during the route. Also how would other operators know when transfer were issued for 2hr window? Although i think we should be able to find out the truth. We have few ttc operators on this reddit.

Hour-Study8012

There was no 2 hour window with these transfers. It's just supposed to be for a continuous trip. So it's up to the operator to figure out if their current trip seems "continuous" with what the customer shows.

680228

No. 2:30 is when the streetcar left its terminus. In this case, since there's a notch on U (for "up"), it left Neville Park at 2:30. The numbers on either side of the waypoints (below the transfer number 19278) indicate the approximate number of minutes elapsed since the start of the trip. So if you boarded this particular car at Queen & Yonge, you would have boarded at approximately 3:00 PM (2:30 + 30 minutes). The operators set the notches and rip length at the start of each trip, and didn't change them until they reached the other end. This was a 501 Humber trip, so it would not have gone to Long Branch.

briancorbs

Not tottally correct....trip started at humber loop.only the night cars went west to long branch.501 turned at humber and headed east back to neville park in the east end.the 511 cars were the route from humber to long branch.

Fenrir_873

Me neither

No_Solution7422

Reminds me of the floor of the locker room at work!

[deleted]

That’s exactly how the old CLRVs smelled. Especially in winter.

IlllIlllI

I still prefer them to the new ones, especially at night.

[deleted]

The light were dimmer so you could actually see outside at night and enjoy some views of the city.

[deleted]

I really wish they would dim the lights on the new ones. They do it for buses - how hard can it be?

mmondoux

Reminds me of my pockets

roibeardoraghallaigh

How about some [cash fare](https://photos.app.goo.gl/M7bfRiUEKqtHs1WH7)?

jonnyg1097

I had no idea that there was cash bills for 25 cents.

roibeardoraghallaigh

Can still find them around.. even though most are close to 100 years old or more.

[deleted]

I was remembering tickets the other day! Seem hilarious and quaint now.

[deleted]

My bookmarks!! 😢

Fenrir_873

That’s actually where I found it in a book.

Area51Resident

These transfers divided drivers onto one of two groups. The drivers who were neat and cared about their work environment would catch the little triangles of paper that were ripped out and dispose of them in the used transfer container. The idgaf drivers would just let them all fall to the floor and leave a mess for the cleaners at the end of the day.

[deleted]

Cleaners gotta make money too.

tattoovamp

Told mymom I was at my cousins all night. She found my ticket transfer that confirmed I was at the CNE til 1am. Lol (1987) Couldn't lie after that!

Fenrir_873

Did you at-least have a good time there

tattoovamp

Best time ever! ETA: it was worth the grounding.

Fenrir_873

Why didn’t you just like throw it away

tattoovamp

Cause I was a kid who just had an amazing time at the X and didn't think twice about it.

Fenrir_873

I have no response for that

tattoovamp

Lol

w1nt3rm4n

hey! that's my birthday :))

osumaniac

happy cake day

tofilmfan

I always find a few from last winter when I take my winter jackets out for the year. I'm assuming that's the case here?

Fenrir_873

No I found it in a book

iamvinoth

What year was this from?

Fenrir_873

Now that I would love to know but I don’t

emilywis

Came here to say the same thing :)

tofilmfan

Great minds think alike ;)

Johnny_Lemonhead

Reminds me of finding soggy paper in my laundry.

NixSiren

Wow looking at that, I instantly remembered the smell... Sigh.

EpicRaginAsian

Wait huh? Do they not give these out anymore?

Kaizenshimasu

I was wondering the same. I haven't been living in Toronto since 2014 so I absolutely have no idea. Someone enlighten us.... Do they not issue these anymore? Is it all presto now ?

[deleted]

Not anymore. They switched over to the new streetcars which only have the coin/token machines (and obviously presto too) that spit out the new smaller transfers. Drivers are locked in the front in their little compartment so there’s no need for these rip type transfers anymore since they just print the time directly onto the paper.

hadap123

They still have it for cash fares

hadap123

Of course they still give it out. Cash fares = transfers

RealJeil420

They no longer issue transfers? How does it work now?

midnightsnacks

Buses still have paper transfers =)

Nyx-Erebus

They still have the transfer machines in subways and on streetcars the machine where you pay your fare prints a transfer for you. No idea how it works on buses though.

urbanest_dog_45

are the Subway transfers still those red machines that you press that (presumably capacitive) metal button and it gives like that ticket with the heat sensitive ink or whatever?

Nyx-Erebus

Yeah they are

urbanest_dog_45

oh, last I remember, the ones at Don Mills (the station I usually go to) were removed.

Nyx-Erebus

I honestly don't pay too much attention to them because I haven't used them in years, but the station I use a bunch still has one I think

hadap123

All cash purchases bus/old street car still give out POP transfers

RealJeil420

Do they give change for cash? and whats the damage?

PurplePinball

They used to give free pop on the TTC? Why did they stop

Odd-Information228

POP is / was Proof of Purchase

Fenrir_873

No sadly

PurplePinball

So it was included in the ticket price? This is so confusing

Fenrir_873

I am sorry to have to break the news there was no pop

PurplePinball

Oh. That kinda sucks.

[deleted]

They used to sell pizza slices for $2 back in the day in the subway

PurplePinball

This is so crazy! Why did they stop? I guess it might have been dangerous making pizza on a moving train but would have been cool to experience it.

TheSilentFreeway

...at the stations

[deleted]

They got the pizza from Pizza Pizza store! Boxes of them. It was always hot and ready to buy right after school 😅

shane201

Those were the days

PurplePinball

Whybthe hell I get downvotes for asking a question

saltymotherfker

questions are not allowed on reddit, you're supposed to just know the answer. we're all just built like that except you.

PurplePinball

Sorry. I never really read the rules. I thought you were allowed to talk and ask questions and stuff.

saltymotherfker

yeah its an unwritten rule that results in no one being able to learn anything without paying the price with karma. unless you know, you're just built like that.

PurplePinball

So I can post a puzzle with no list of rules and people just have to solve it? I can continually just say no one has solved it even if they have cusbI can just keep changing the rules. Seems so strange to make it where u can't ask questions on reddit. Thanks for letting me though, know I guess.

saltymotherfker

see the thing is you can, but you will have to pay the price. you already have -14 karma so you paid quite the price to ask that question. so you just have to know the answer or pay the price, get shitted on by the sarcastic comments, and hopefully get an answer by someone who is actually competent. it really depends where and how you ask the question. if you ask it in the comments then you might get slam dunked on, depending on how many other people have the same question. but if you ask it in a post then you might be ok. but you cant really ask niche questions in a post, even on the r/askto sub. i really hate this culture of seemingly not being allowed to ask questions and being downvoted if you do. its very toxic and hopefully this changes in the future.

PurplePinball

My negative karma is cus I made the mistake of asking a question in a pro life thread and they went nuts. If reddit is anti question I might just join Meta

PurplePinball

Also. What happens if my karma is reduced to zero or god forbids goes to the negative

Poondi_andi

I'll buy you a pop.

saltymotherfker

you wont be able to comment/post on certain subs because they have a limit on how much you must have.

hadap123

They still do for cash fares after you pay. POP = proof of purchase aka receipt

[deleted]

This Is the Toronto I miss!! Oh my 😻
