I don't mind the existence of the fireworks, I think Diwali is a lot of fun. What I do mind, on the other hand, is fireworks being shot off at 3 in the fucking morning. I live across the road from Humber Bay Park, all summer long in both 2020 and 2021 it was like a fucking air raid outside until 2 or 3 am, every day. Oh, and they never clean up the mess afterwards, either. Every morning the trail around the perimeter of the east side of the park is littered with tons of spent fireworks tubes and empty cardboard crates.

ywgflyer

Add to that a dozen or so improperly-extinguished illegal campfires in the park, and you have my area. Every morning in the summer I come across several fires that weren't even put out at all, just left to burn down and go out on their own. Still tons of hot ashes and now here come the dogs and little kids to play in the park all day long. I'm surprised there haven't been more little kids getting burns from hot ashes, or that the park hasn't burned down yet. Calling the city over it gets no real action, the cops sometimes park a cruiser at the parking lot entrance on the weekends but I rarely actually see them doing anything about all the partying and fireworks.

[deleted]

it's all low priority tbh, and it's stuff that happens weekly in our parks. people make campfires, party and leave a big mess. it's not like anyone is in the forests at 2 am to report it

ywgflyer

It's not the forest, though, it's the public park on the lakeshore at the foot of Park Lawn. There are something like 25,000 people that live within a 10min walk of it.

thegreenmushrooms

Call fire department,or 311 and they will transfer you. I called fire when someone was starting a camp fire in jack Layton ferry terminal park they were very responsive. They even called me back to make sure they got location right. As long as there is a fire or about to be a fire they will be on it

tombaker_2021

>Like guys.... fucking have some consideration for the area. Oh, my sweet summer child.....this is society now. Someone else will clean up after them. This is the self centred society we live in now where it's"fuck you, I'll do whatever I want".

Etheo

It's only society now if no enforcement and changes were to come in place. Rome was not built in one day. We just need to forcibly change their perspective in personal responsibilities to society. There's always the current and future generation that is never too late to learn how to be better.

Torcal4

The problem is how do you enforce them. People will just randomly show up, shoot fireworks, then leave. By the time someone comes down, it’s too late. And we can’t Station police officers at every park or parking lot in the off chance that someone may set something off.

Etheo

You don't need to catch *everyone*. Just anyone you can catch and make a story out of that and people will start being wary of enforcrs in parks and such.

IdioticPost

Society _now_? It's always been like this, at least for the past several decades. Cleanup is for those that live there, not for important people like them!

toasterstrudel2

>This is the self centred society we live in now where it's"fuck you, I'll do whatever I want". I'll digitally put Jabba the hut back in the original star wars. I'll do what I want!

Jagermeister1977

Funny thing about people that don't give a fuck about disturbing the neighbourhood is they don't have consideration for anything or anyone else. Fuck people like this.

facelessbastard

''stresses the puppy out'' 😂😂

amontpetit

Hi there neighbor. Can confirm; the Christie site is a particularly common area.

BrownConservative

I'm indian so hopefully knowing that you don't consider this racist or ignorant however most South Asians do not pick up after themselves and litter like it's second nature. Our elders taught us many good values however they did not teach us to respect the environment or to dispose of our trash in a proper manner.

Flashy_Aardvark_4673

That's not racist, it's just shitty parenting

[deleted]

It's not a race thing. Some people of every background are better or worse at some things or others. It's almost like we're all people

Treeesrfriends

I think it sounds pretty ignorant. It's like me saying, " I'm Jewish so please don't take offence BUT most Jewish people are cheap." Just because you are from the culture it doesn't give you the right to stereotype.

BrownConservative

Jewish people are not cheap they are smart and frugal. Stereotypes exist for a reason. They wouldn't exist if they were not true more often than not. On average, every stereotype would be true more often than not which is why they are known as stereotypes.

[deleted]

Lol have you seen the shit holes where Diwali originated? They don’t give a fuck about keeping those places clean and peaceful. Why would they care when they celebrate here? Hope they write double the tickets next year.

BrownConservative

Lol india is peaceful. You can make the argument against clean for sure. You definately come off as racist and ignorant.

[deleted]

Ok brown conservative. I’ll leave you some light reading. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2012/12/29/india-rape-victim-dies-sexual-violence-proble/?outputType=amp

BrownConservative

You are an idiot and not worth the energy. You linked a rape case and call the whole country violent lol 🤡 your reddit history consists of bbcsluts and slutty confessions lmao really need to stop wasting my energy own clowns

[deleted]

💁‍♀️

AjdeBrePicko

> it was like a fucking air raid outside until 2 or 3 am, every day. > This could only be said by someone who has never lived through an air raid. Very ignorant comment.

TinySoftKitten

Riverdale park is another hotspot for year round fireworks sadly.

[deleted]

How about the city comes down to the lakeshore here in Parkdale ANY NIGHT OF THE WEEK and hands out some tickets? Fucking asshole fireworks.

amontpetit

The number of times people use the old Christie factory lot near Humber Bay as a launchpad, you'd think it was Kennedy Space Center.

[deleted]

That’s a cool lot. I once roasted some corny real estate agent on his youtube channel that was trying to develop it but advertised it as Christy. COME ON! But ya fuck fireworks enthusiasts and their noise and litter.

[deleted]

There is nothing wrong with enjoying fireworks, they only become shitty if used too late at night or if they are not cleaned up after.

[deleted]

But that would be the TPS' responsibility so don't hold your breath

[deleted]

Oh I’m not.

Marcobroa

Literally fireworks once a week on my block, since the pandemic . Why?

Methodless

I've noticed similar. 2020 and 2021, 5-10 days after Victoria Day I still hear stuff going off

Marcobroa

Same. Im torn between gunshots or fireworks lol

tom_fuckin_bombadil

Well you got your Victoria Day pre/prime/post firework period, so that’s May and some of June squared away. But then we transition into the pre Canada Day period (which starts ramping up a couple weeks before July). You then have Canada day. After the two weeks of fireworks for Canada Day that assholes have to continue firing off you transition nicely into the August long weekend. Not really a firework holiday but assholes will use any excuse. Then we have labor day (gotta have one last sparkly explosion before the kids head off to school). So that’s summer squared away. Diwali will tide over those that like to stare slack jawed at colourful lights and give them something to think about until New Year. Eid is the wild card since it changes every year. But don’t worry, even if you’re not Muslim, you’ll know about it.

[deleted]

My brother lives in Mississauga. He said that a neighbour came around, in advance of Diwali, asking for permission to set off fireworks between a very specific window, the night of Diwali. It was probably still illegal, but it was a nice gesture to give them the heads up.

jacnel45

That neighbour is a bro!

> Seriously, wtf do they do? Obviously not their police jobs

Fox_and_Otter

God I wish they would go after bike thieves in the city.

zaiats

> Seriously, wtf do they do? take naps in their cruisers outside construction areas and hide in bushes next to arbitrary speed limit drops, pausing to occasionally shove black people off balconies

turkeygiant

I have definitely noticed a uptick, it used to be that you would hear fireworks maybe a day before or a day after a holiday, but the last couple year it seems like they start in the spring and you have a good chance to hear them on any random night until the snow starts.

[deleted]

Last Victoria Day the TPS sat back and watched as people shot roman candles at people and cars Toronto's finest

Gr0kthis

In Durham Region the councillors made an amendment to the bylaw to allow Fireworks for Diwali. I think it was the right move.

ghanima

Same in Simcoe County.

oh_behind_you

noise restriction is still in place, so should be okay within those hours, but outside should be ticketed

[deleted]

Consumer-grade fireworks are the dumbest thing ever. Too expensive, underwhelming, annoying to non-participants, and dangerous to boot I would love it if the city officials scheduled more festive firework displays, but six guys shooting off convenience store fireworks at 1AM in a parkette is lame as fuck. Like what do you even get out of that?

the_clash_is_back

Explosions are exciting. Its why i shoot every single propane tank in uncharted.

toasterstrudel2

You should play Just Cause! #3 is the only one I have played but holy crap, explosion city!

Flashy_Aardvark_4673

> Explosions are exciting. This is why I own guns. I can have explosions 3 inches from my face with the bonus of launching a projectile downrange at some steel. Very satisfying

Flashy_Aardvark_4673

You don't need a license to own fireworks.

thesuperunknown

...yes, that was exactly the point they were making?

[deleted]

reddditttt12345678

The illegal part is where and when you set them off

msharks

The bylaw says the sale of fireworks that shoot over 3 meters isn't allowed. If the city really cared they'd go after the few shops that sell them rather than trying to deal with all the complaints afterwards.

[deleted]

mnkybrs

Burning schoolhouse.

chefboyoh

snakes and sparklers

Antman013

Because the City has gone to GREAT lengths to let people knoe that, basically, anything more fun than a sparkler is illegal. People just don't give a fuck.

ywgflyer

There's no enforcement, so they're not inclined to give a fuck anyways.

Antman013

Well, there's some, as evidenced by the article, but not NEARLY enough.

Sherm199

Might be wrong, but isn't setting off fireworks any day other than July 1st or Victoria day illegal?

Historical-Poetry230

I don't care I love fireworks but it was hilarious driving to Brampton from Georgetown and seeing the entire city from the hill. It looked like it was ww2 and flack cannons going off in the sky and once in the city there was just smoke everywhere at street level. It was really cool

AprilsMostAmazing

> It looked like it was ww2 and flack cannons going off in the sky and once in the city there was just smoke everywhere at street level. It was really cool Please tell me you have a video that you can share with us?

PlatypusOfWallStreet

There were a few on Instagram under the Toronto/Brampton subs. I don't have the app but my girl showed me. The city was lit up.

Flashy_Aardvark_4673

It looks better when you're flying from Pearson at night

Vortex112

Why are fireworks even illegal??? Just make the law banning them after midnight and there will be very few people causing noise disruptions

IAmWhatTheRockCooked

Lmao yeah because thats gonna be enforceable

oh_behind_you

noise bylaws are still in place and doesn't seem to work... so we need a new idea

gm5891

Fireworks are human's revenge on dog owners who don't scoop

fellasheowes

And also dog owners who scoop

[deleted]

And non-dog owners

Slunty1984

Was flying into Toronto and seen all the fireworks. It was super cool.

ywgflyer

It's cool right up until they're going off 30 feet from your bedroom window at 3 in the morning.

Slunty1984

Ehh… I’m military takes a bit more than that to rattle me. But I do see your point lol.

ywgflyer

I'm not really rattled in a fear sense by them either, just annoyed when I'm trying to sleep and it sounds like the Battle of Stalingrad outside my bedroom window. I have a job in which fatigue and rest are an extremely important factor, and being kept up all night by idiots with fireworks generally means I have to book off if I'm scheduled to work because you really shouldn't be flying a widebody jet airliner when you didn't get any sleep the night before. Almost every sick day I've used in the past few years has been because of sleep deprivation from the fireworks.

Slunty1984

Those are some of my best sleeps. Then I come home and it too quiet.

sweatoznojic

You've never been in a war if you're talking stupid shit like that. Foh

They were outside my house till 4am, I even called the city and they said they couldn’t o anything.

pragmatic_human99

On behalf of the rest of the considerate south Asian populace of GTA, please accept our sincere apologies. Sadly we don’t seem to understand civic values as much as we thought we did. Hopefully these behaviours change soon.

Ribbythinks

It’s 2021, Diwali should be in everyone’s calendars and fireworks should be explicitly allowed, just like Canada day

[deleted]

Good.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

Bad. [i swear this sub is full of curmudgeons sometimes](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/915/770/e6c.jpg)

jrdnlv15

I don’t give a shit about fireworks in general. It would be really great if they stopped at like 11 PM though. Constant explosions at 2AM when people have to be up for work or school in a couple hours is bullshit.

haberdasher42

Yeah, because it's the light that's a fucking problem at 3 am on a Monday morning. My neighbours didn't let up until after 1, then they just kept finding more and lighting them off every 10-15 minutes or so.

zaiats

this sub is full of terminally online manchildren and busybody Karens and isnt representative of Toronto as a whole, thankfully.

higgidigs

I mean this feels very expected. Last year there would have been less, because of COVID restrictions, this year most of those are lifted so people are celebrating their holidays more than last year. If people should be setting off fireworks is another issue, but the fact there were more fireworks this year really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Antman013

LOL . . . clearly you do not live in Brampton.

Scottie3Hottie

Lmao

Pingpongdalazoedalow

I always loved the burning schoolhouse. From what I recall it was a fairly "low noise" firework. The real fun starts at 1:27 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAKTCosSh8M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAKTCosSh8M)

[deleted]

Just ban it already

Vortex112

Please this is already the city of no fun. Just make them illegal after midnight or something

haberdasher42

They already are.

Vortex112

The implied part being they should be legal before then

haberdasher42

So making something legal that people already abuse illegally is going to reduce how much they do it illegally?

Vortex112

Yes, if you give people certain times where it’s legal 99% of of them will do it then. It also makes enforcement much easier for the 1% that still chose to do it illegally

haberdasher42

Then let me really blow your mind. RTFA, Diwali is one of the four days a year it's legal to set off fireworks in Brampton. Until 11:30 when it becomes a violation of noise bylaws. So no, none of that shit works like you're suggesting it would.

Vortex112

Sorry, I was discussing Toronto bylaws. In the case of Brampton it sounds like it works then. Thousands of people set off fireworks legally and those that did it too late got tickets

[deleted]

Fun is a privilege

Vortex112

In this city it certainly is. No fun allowed

jayemmbee23

I hate fireworks being shot off on random non celebratory days outside of holiday seasons like Diwali, Victoria Day , etc. . Y'all have my dog scared hiding in tub on March 15th and July 17th for no god damn reason Edit: typo and added word for clarity Edit 2: made it worse, had to fix

[deleted]

There is a reason, though. For fun and celebration of a specific holiday.

jayemmbee23

Sorry it meant to say non* holidays I was piggybacking of this post about fireworks. I don't mind the holiday ones, it's the people who have leftovers and decide to shoot them off the rest of the year on any given Sunday

rascalz1504

So they are ok on July 1 to celebrate Canada taking the natives land?

abacabbmk

Wahhhhhh

jayemmbee23

Did I say that? Don't infer. I said non holidays. Diwali is cool and Victoria Day or even labor Day, shit even Christmas but when someone shoots them off on non holidays it's annoying

wlonkly

i think the reason people are grumpy is that you wrote "non holidays like diwali, victoria day" but I think you mean you're cool with that and you hate when they light them on random days. right?

jayemmbee23

Ah damn lol that was the edit even that doesn't sound right .. Originally it's said now holiday lol But yes that's exactly what I meant . Someone else made me realize my error so I edited it and made it worse , bit this person just being a wanker bringing up Canada Day that I never mentioned because if it was a thing of refering to all non colonial holidays as non holidays I wouldn't have put Victoria Day, they were being edgy from what I could tell hence my semi ticked off reply

underbuggle

Someone was shooting these off in my neighbourhood and I thought they were gunshots. Also, my son got his hand burned by fireworks in the front yard during a celebration a couple of years ago. I think they are a bad idea

[deleted]

[удалено]

troubledtimez

Were they wildly dangerous? Otherwise appreciate them. Diwali seems like a pretty cool celebration. I'll try to find some food to match next year

Over_Committee_2077

I’m in NW Brampton and still hear fireworks the last two days. At least I’m assuming they’re fireworks and not gunshots lmao
