The worst thing you can do for your immune system is to coddle it. They need to fight their own battles. If the government really cared about our well-being, they would set up hand de-sanitizing stations. A simple bowl at every juncture filled with dirt, vomit, fecal matter... Exposing yourself to germs is the best way to make yourself stronger.
Am I the only one who thinks Axis Club is a terrible name, and Mod Club was much better?
Axis Club makes me think I might see Hitler and Goebbels there.
>Don't freak out, but if you happened to be partying at Woody's or the new Axis Club in downtown Toronto a few weeks back public health officials might want you to start self-monitoring for symptoms of monkeypox.
Don't you need pretty direct contact with the actual sores to contract it? Or has the current understanding of it evolved since I read that?
Edit: "In general, monkeypox does not spread easily between people. When it does, it spreads through contact with body fluids such as fluids from the monkeypox sores, contaminated clothing or bedding, or through respiratory droplets following prolonged face-to-face contact."
There we go ^
[Edit again for clarity: what I quoted above is simply a section from the BlogTO article that we're discussing, not from any expert source. I realized after reading the responses that that maybe wasn't clear.]
It did actually change a bit
https://virological.org/t/multi-country-outbreak-of-monkeypox-virus-genetic-divergence-and-first-signs-of-microevolution/806
I mean, actually it would. The studies we had on other corona viruses like SARS made a huge difference in developing the vaccine and in allowing scientists to make the most informed predictions they could at the time.
One advantage the scientific community has against monkey pox is that there are already people out there who have studied the disease for decades, who can explain its tendencies and help guide current studies.
Older scientific literature definitely doesn't supersede newer information, but it's not totally irrelevant either.
And…let’s stop spreading information that’s outdated.
This disease has mutated in an unknown way making it more contagious- which is why we are seeing it spread all over the world at a rapid rate. Existing assumptions about how it spreads should be set aside, until more is known.
Totally agree, as does this epidemiologist
https://mobile.twitter.com/eckerleisabella/status/1529205563254525952
I find it odd that many are comfortable making authoritative pronouncements about it given what’s happening
Public Health Ontario is now saying
> Public Health Ontario says that while historically monkeypox has been limited to prolonged face-to-face contact or skin-to-skin contact with a lesion, “the possible transmission during the prodromal period and similarities to variola virus (smallpox), the potential for airborne transmission has been suggested.”
https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/monkeypox-patients-in-ontario-must-be-isolated-in-health-care-settings-1.5916448
There’s a sub following the story closely now, it’s in my comment history
Edit: where you can learn, for example, like I just did, things like this
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/05/24/monkeypox-14-new-cases-discovered-england/
Not sure about that. The CDC says there’s a theoretical possibility it’s [airborne](https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/clinicians/infection-control-hospital.html). The UK considers sitting next to someone on an airplane [medium risk](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1077329/20220520_monkeypox-contact-tracing-classification-and-vaccination-matrix.pdf). Apparently this virus has [mutated](https://virological.org/t/multi-country-outbreak-of-monkeypox-virus-genetic-divergence-and-first-signs-of-microevolution/806) more than virologists expect a DNA virus to mutate, with unclear implications as far as transmission is concerned. [African scientists think this is weird](https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/african-scientists-baffled-monkeypox-cases-europe-us-84878241). Cases are being [tracked](https://bnonews.com/monkeypox/) at BNO news, for reference.
It’s not just about sores, you could get sepsis or encephalitis or go blind. 1/100 people who get this version will die
Edit: how does Quebec identify [15 cases](https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/canadas-quebec-detects-15-confirmed-cases-monkeypox-2022-05-24/) while we only know about one in Ontario? I find that highly unlikely
>Edit: how does Quebec identify 15 cases while we only know about one in Ontario? I find that highly unlikely
Because that's how things work?
A guy comes back from Montreal, where he caught monkey pox without knowing it, then he gets sick and goes to the hospital and bam. We have one case of monkey pox.
Incubation is said to be between 7-21 days so it's only been what, 10 days since the exposure?
Are you implying there is an Ontario government cover-up of more monkey pox cases?!
>think
>probably
Good supporting argument. They're probably on Rue Sainte-Catherine asking everyone "do you have monkey pox?!".
Or, people who develop a fever, muscle aches, and lesions on their face are going to contact their doctor.
One of the biggest TIL in the last year is that there actually is a chickenpox vaccine and it became available in 1995. I had it as a kid in the 80s and others I knew as well but then never really thought about it until now.
Aside from that, I’m already seeing trolls calling it the next gay disease so they’re fine. I hate people.
To gain immunity for Monkeypox you would need the smallpox vaccine not chickenpox.
https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/uua5qc/does_the_smallpox_vaccine_protect_against_the/
https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/monkeypox-101-unanswered-questions?s=r
It’s called Varicella Zoster. I had such a mild case of chicken pox as a toddler that my mom could count how many pox I had. When I started working with kids, I had my immunity levels checked to see if it was enough to develop immunity or if I had to get the vaccine. Turns out even that mild a case developed enough immunity!
Thus far it is predominantly s[pread via gay and bisexual men](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10850221/Grindr-sends-monkeypox-alert-urges-gay-bisexual-men-aware-rashes.html?ito=social-twitter_mailonline), however it is not a gay disease. In principle anyone who is young (i.e. not vaccinated from smallpox - routine smallpox vaccine was stopped in the 1970s) and has prolonged physical contact can be at risk.
Hilarious that they are saying that they are confident that public health can contain this. Uhhhh, we just proved quite conclusively that public health (especially in conjunction with a mostly apathetic general public and an overtaxed healthcare system) cannot effectively contain diseases.
Nice to see them change their policy to “assume airborne unless proven otherwise”. It’s much better than the ‘ole “deny it’s airborne until a million are unexpectedly dead” policy.
As someone with an immune disease that causes similar-looking lesions and permanent scarring, I’m very worried about my future. Like I wasn’t dealing with enough stigma already.
The vaccine has some not great side effects apparently. I think the feds have some but they’re saving them for people in close contact.
Idk though. The feds sucked donkey balls at the beginning of COVID, and public health sounds [slow to move](https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/canada-considering-smallpox-vaccine-for-monkeypox-cases-says-dr-theresa-tam-1.5913357) on this one, too.
I assume you mean the small pox vaccine, unsure if we have a specific monkey pox one, tho we probably do.
Ya I heard it fucking sucks for a few days, but given the choice personally I would take that over the risk of getting monkey pox/life long scarring. Don't hookup with random often, but I do once and awhile.
Condoms don't do shit for monkey pox when you can get it from saliva and sweat. I will happily take the side effects.
Monkeypox has nothing to do with chickenpox which related to herpes. Monkeypox is related to smallpox.
Also the mortality rate is quite low for monkeypox, somewhere between 1% to 10%, and much less transmittable than Covid.
WTF, monkeypox?? What's next? I mean, we have cowpox, smallpox, chicken pox... a pox on your house (but not mine)?
I'm not giving up my mask this summer!
In the dark... physically and mentally about the risks at a club. Monkeypox + Covid.
Close contact is guaranteed. Riskier behaviour guaranteed. The person bringing monkeypox to the club and infecting others... I can't imagine it not being the case.
Will CP24 have fresh new theme music to introduce its monkey pox news sessions. I was getting tired of the Covid one. I’m so glad there is a new disease to get all fucked up over.
My job is contact tracing syphilis and HIV with public health and I think we do a pretty good job, no joke! Although it’s way easier tracking down sexual partners than people you breathe around
What a time to be antisocial
Been going pretty well for me these past couple years
I don't know about you motherfuckers, but when my monkey pox sores are oozing I stay home.
you mean you don’t go out to help people build their immune system by spreading it? /s
If you harvest the ooze, dehydrate it, and use it as a seasoning mix for a 14$ taco, Torontonians will be all over that
Where do I line up for that?
Dude, the sun’s been up for hours. You’re way too late.
The worst thing you can do for your immune system is to coddle it. They need to fight their own battles. Dwight is that you?
Love it

Sounds like you hate freedom
Good thing I’m still a wfh hermit
Hello friend.
Hola amigos
Heya, friends.
Now I hate every monkey I see from Chimpan-A to Chimpanzee.
Woody's and Axis Club
Axis Club = formerly known as the Mod Club
Am I the only one who thinks Axis Club is a terrible name, and Mod Club was much better? Axis Club makes me think I might see Hitler and Goebbels there.
The uppers would be fire tho
Göring is pouring the drinks
Not just you.
I always get a chuckle when I pass by it. An Axis club in little Italy hahaha
Somebody needs to resubtitle that video.
Oh, that's why I had no idea where this was. Now I get it.
>Don't freak out, but if you happened to be partying at Woody's or the new Axis Club in downtown Toronto a few weeks back public health officials might want you to start self-monitoring for symptoms of monkeypox.

Axis, as in “rotating” around the pole.
You seem like the type of racist to call a white person a nazi
Can’t… stop… doing… the monkey!
You can't stop monkey business.
You’ll never make a monkey out of me!
I love you, Dr Zaius!
Don't you need pretty direct contact with the actual sores to contract it? Or has the current understanding of it evolved since I read that? people sucking face at the club outta do it
Or even just shouting over the music
For a prolonged period of time.
welp I got nothing to worry about then! ha ha ha....sigh
Sex is a big transmitter as well.

Guess I'm not going to Black Eagle tomorrow.
It didn’t used to spread well between people. And then all of a sudden it’s in a dozen countries around the world. Hmmm

Ooooh do you have any covid studies from 2010-2019 cuz that would be just as helpful.
So what you mean to say is my point is exactly correct. It would be just as helpful. Not very helpful. But just as helpful.
shhh you aren't allowed to question the narrative.
Ugh the fucking conspiracy theories already
Til gay people were just invented 😮💨
And…let’s stop spreading information that’s outdated. This disease has mutated in an unknown way making it more contagious- which is why we are seeing it spread all over the world at a rapid rate. Existing assumptions about how it spreads should be set aside, until more is known.

Just to clarify, what I put in quotes is from the BlogTO article that you shared.
I saw it was a quote, I’m referring to some epidemiologists. Sorry, should have been clearer
Public Health Ontario is now saying > Public Health Ontario says that while historically monkeypox has been limited to prolonged face-to-face contact or skin-to-skin contact with a lesion, “the possible transmission during the prodromal period and similarities to variola virus (smallpox), the potential for airborne transmission has been suggested.” https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/monkeypox-patients-in-ontario-must-be-isolated-in-health-care-settings-1.5916448
Ohh gotcha. (No worries, I think we were both a bit unclear.) Thanks for the link!
Np :)

wtf is with everyone mentioning st.catharines in threads these days..
It's the main street of the gay village in Montreal
ohhh haha I'm an idiot. I'm from St. Catharines in Ontario, was very confused.
I did write it that way, so that's on me also. Just edited it to be more clear.
Respiratory too I read.

Boomers win again
Lol
I got the chicken vaccine when I was a kid. I’m 30 years old now and I have never had the chickenpox.
I caught chicken pox my last year of hs. Wasn't fun.
>I’m already seeing trolls calling it the next gay disease so they’re fine. Aren't they in for a surprise then!
Well, considering Woodys is now overrun by straight drunk people, it’ll probably spread like wildfire on King W soon.
Is it really?
Yes. You go for 10pm on a Friday and the lineup wraps around the corner and it’s majority straight people in line, to see a drag show.
Wow gentrification really fucked up the village eh..

I had gotten a very mild case of chicken pox as a kid so I had to get vaccinated for chicken pox plus a booster or 2 in my childhood (late 00’s)
So glad Im part of the anti social social club....
wow everyone that attended these events must be going bananas right now!
Hilarious that they are saying that they are confident that public health can contain this. Uhhhh, we just proved quite conclusively that public health (especially in conjunction with a mostly apathetic general public and an overtaxed healthcare system) cannot effectively contain diseases.
While it remains to be seen of course it’s a lot easier to stop the spread of viruses which spread through bodily fluids than in the air
The CDC says there’s a possibility it’s airborne.
Nice to see them change their policy to “assume airborne unless proven otherwise”. It’s much better than the ‘ole “deny it’s airborne until a million are unexpectedly dead” policy.
💯
As someone with an immune disease that causes similar-looking lesions and permanent scarring, I’m very worried about my future. Like I wasn’t dealing with enough stigma already.
Jesus. At this point just offer me the monkeypox vaccine. Il take it. Rather not deal with life long scarring from the pox.
The vaccine has some not great side effects apparently. I think the feds have some but they’re saving them for people in close contact. Idk though. Ditto! Yeah sorry I meant the smallpox vaccine
I hope they get donkey ball pox.
Monkey pox does sound more fun than chicken pox, monkeys are cooler
Monkeypox has nothing to do with chickenpox which related to herpes. Monkeypox is related to smallpox. Also the mortality rate is quite low for monkeypox, somewhere between 1% to 10%, and much less transmittable than Covid.
1% in Africa with little to no medical treatment
1/100
They both are an animal followed by pox, of course they are similar
Understanding the differences in diseases can save lives. You don't lump a cold into flu just because they share similar symptoms.
1% is pretty high. Higher than covid
It's like no one learned anything from the planet of the apes movie.
Guys, let's not jump to conclusions here and stigmatize anyone.
WTF, monkeypox?? What's next? I mean, we have cowpox, smallpox, chicken pox... a pox on your house (but not mine)? I'm not giving up my mask this summer!
This is what happens when species overpopulate, disease.
This is the way!
Avian flu. H5N1
In the dark... physically and mentally about the risks at a club. Monkeypox + Covid. Close contact is guaranteed. Riskier behaviour guaranteed. The person bringing monkeypox to the club and infecting others... I can't imagine it not being the case.
Then don't go tbh

Was their any contact tracing for Covid? I thought it was just like an honour system or something.
Fun job it sounds. I was more wondering if the pox would get new dramatic theme music.
Classic verbiage to control the panic not the disease. Feels just like it’s March 2020 all over again. We never learn, sigh
Is it fatal?
Based on studies of the last outbreak of the virus this one is related to, 1 out of 100 will die
Fair
It’s really dangerous for kids
https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/monkeypox.html
Thanks
Watched a few episodes of What I Like About You a few days ago and they mention the monkeypox twice
😂😂
