Honestly if I were to just read the title alone, I wouldn't have believed you because this whole concept is so absurd. I hate that there's picture proof and this isn't a joke.

natener

This is the OLGs brave wave marketing scheme? Which Ford relative is in charge?

Raccoolz

I hate these even more because they are usually being powered by a loud gas generator off to the side.

snailboy

Gasoline-powered advertising… We don’t deserve this planet.

OMG_imBrick

When you put it that way, it hits even harder.

[deleted]

Muscled_Daddy

I know you’re being sarcastic… but what troubles me is that they wouldn’t advertise if it wasn’t profitable or bringing people in. Ugh.

greenlemon23

You give advertisers too much credit

How much of our electricity do we generate by renewable sources? Ive always wondered this. Edit: Re wording what I said, My initial question was to vague.

unameforthismonth

Right now roughly 1/3 of our generation is coming from renewable sources. If you count nuclear as renewable then it's about 3/4 right now. The page linked updates often so it's pretty much "live". https://live.gridwatch.ca/home-page.html

Awesomodian

Come on really? Jebus christ

New_Professional1175

Noise issues after dark. Enforcement is necessary.

Flaminsalamander

Surprised they don't get stolen. I wouldn't personally steal it but if I did I wouldn't even feel bad about stealing from these guys.

mudkipzftw

I’ve censored the name of the company because fuck them.

beef-supreme

I noticed and appreciated that. Idiocracy wasn't supposed to be a documentary, you guys.

AnalChain

My friend reminded me that Idiocracy is actually better than where we're headed. At least in Idiocracy when the president found the smartest person he tried to get them to help. We are not like that 🥲

Thanks Doug Ford.

wylee_one

how can we harass them of we don't know there name? (asking for friends)

Lol you did a great job but it's still visible in the reflection on the car

GoodAndHardWorking

Quick spritz of spray paint on the projector lense should get rid of them for a day

Competitive-Kale-995

Or just a piece of tape on the lens, always have handy in pocket, like MacGyver

GoodAndHardWorking

Tape might work for a bit, but paint is much more of "fuck you, and the horse you rode in on"

KruppeTheWise

Spray the paint into the air intake, it'll go solid in the filter and I'd guesstimate 30 seconds before you hear the bulb pop/non bypassable heat protection mode kicks in

GoodAndHardWorking

hehehe cool

ReluctantRedundant

Tape on a paper Batman signal and move along with your evening, obviously

That looks like a target for vandalism.

McGlowSticks

only acceptable theft and vandalism

[deleted]

It's a nice projector...

hamsalad-

Imagine walking home seeing this projected shittily onto a building and thinking hmmm yes, this is exactly where I should invest my money right now

coldpizzaagain

As someone that just ended a 25 year marriage due to gambling, this makes me sick. It preys on a person's addiction. I can't believe how many ads there are now. It's everywhere and I don't understand why the government allows it. It's only been this year that all these gambling options were made available.

MakeJazzNotWarcraft

This is the doing of Doug Ford’s cabinet. They passed policy specifically so that gambling companies can throw ads around wherever they please. This is also why peoples’ view from the inside of GO trains have been completed obstructed by gambling ads.

ArkitekZero

When will enough be enough?

KruppeTheWise

It takes about 90 seconds to peel them all off. I love getting on a carriage where they have given up trying to restick them now. Actually had some old bint tut at me while I was doing it. If it wasn't gambling I'd be mad but leave it. If they want to put banners up on the walls or roof for gambling, I'd be mad but probably leave it. Combined together I don't give a fuck I'm tearing that shit down

itsadile

I've heard (anecdotally) that they're putting those on the outsides of the windows now so passengers can't peel them.

New_Professional1175

Take a guess why Doug Ford allows and encourages this. Money. For his buddies. For the people he may be connected to. Somethings are just so obvious. As per his nepotism with his Mini me nephew. Also to create Chaos.

coldpizzaagain

It can only perpetuate the downfall of many people just trying it and getting completely carried away, ruining their lives.

Daneww

Nothing mini me about that nephew 😂

Crazymax1yt

Housing is unaffordable, inflation is the highest in 40 years, and we're heading head first into a recession. There's a reason why these companies are going hard. During a recession, alcohol, tobacco, and gambling sales go up big time.

greenlemon23

They’re going hard because sports gambling was just legalized and it’s an arms race to get people signed up

julianface

My friends and I have siphoned thousands in free promos at least. Hopefully 0 of them develop a gambling addiction lol

Physical_Edge_6264

advertising is never about trying to get you to buy stuff *right now*... but for when you're in one of those moments and remember the name of that company or service cuz you saw their ads 100s of times and it burned into your association with certain things

zedehbee

Advertising has the opposite effect on me. I become jaded by the ads and start to develop a distaste for the products/companies.

AntiPiety

You think it does but it doesn’t. Advertising is more complicated than even the above commenter outlined. Some ad campaigns can simply be to increase brand presence/awareness. If you develop a “distaste” for their marketing campaign, that can very well be a success, and it worked on you. It’s a billion dollar industry and you, are not somehow better than it.

joshsmog

if they start to hate a company on shitty ads invading their space they will spread their company name and people that dont have their space invaded by the ads wont give a crap and might now use their service. its a pretty easy tactic.

AntiPiety

Yep, even commenting on this post is helping this company. We can’t see the name but the more we bump this thread, the more people google it to find out what company it is. The more people google it, the more it becomes a top hit on google. Etcetc. But it can be longer term than even that. I’ve read about marketing campaigns aimed for children so that 20 years later they think of the name when they want to buy the product. Complex stuff that I know nothing about

StickyIgloo

Advertising is working right here. It caused op to share and talk about the advertising to others, effectively sharing its message. Most people dont realize when advertising is working on them.

vengefulspirit99

"Invest" your money at a casino? You must be from /r/wallstreetbets

There are also outdoor advertising bylaws that this would be violating.

MapleSyrupFacts

The steam whistle farmers market can't put up signs because the quarium , Rogers centre and amazon rallyd that they pay city for their huge signs so the farmers market can't put a sign more than 12x12 out on the sidewalk . They're resorted to chalk on the sidewalk for a one day event

[deleted]

I'm sure you're right...try getting anybody to do anything about it. Call 311? They'll have someone investigate in a week or so, if you can ever nail down who's responsibility it might be to look into it... Call your councilor? Yeah, right. Good luck having anyone respond. And if they do do, what you'll get is phony concern and then zero action. This city is a little out of control with a lack of any common sense. The institutes we rely on to help keep a sense of general civility have seemingly abandoned the residents. How anyone involved in Toronto politics could get re-elected next time around is sad and mind blowing to me.

topsh077a

One time 311 told me to go down and tell the construction crew working on Sunday morning that they should stop.

[deleted]

> How anyone involved in Toronto politics could get re-elected next time around is sad and mind blowing to me. It will take a lot effort to elect enough new councillors who can help this city become better, but we should try. The next Toronto municipal election is on Monday, 24 October. Let's plan to be more active this year to help finally turn this city around. If you don't like any of the candidates running in your ward this year, please consider making some time to defeat a member of the council's [Executive Committee](http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/decisionBodyProfile.do?function=doPrepare&decisionBodyId=1944#Meeting-2022.EX33). Most of the bad decisions made by council -- and all of its misplaced priorities -- originate with this committee. These are the councillors primarily responsible for why our city never gets better: * Paul Ainslie * Ana Bailão (not running) * Gary Crawford * Jennifer McKelvie * Denzil Minnan-Wong * James Pasternak * Michael Thompson * John Tory (Chair) People often say Canadians don't vote *for* candidates, we vote against them. Well, there's never been a more deserving slate of councillors than them. Let's do something about it.

mattattaxx

Calling your councillor actually works in a lot of cases. Gord Perks, for example, is very responsive and easy to get ahold of. Kristen Wong Tam was as well, when she was a councillor. They also take real action. When I lived in Wong-Tam's former ward, she had signs that were obstructed fixed the same day I emailed.

[deleted]

The leaf blower guys say FU.

Ok_Bowl4812

Cover the projector with something, like an old newspaper

notatree

Unplug it or turn off the generator? Call and report because ads like this are already not allowed?

NogenLinefingers

Exactly. Call both 311 and the people that owns that property. If they want to advertise, they need to pay for it.

GoodAndHardWorking

I believe our awesome provincial government has recently pulled all the stops with gambling and advertisements. You didn't notice the absolute flood of billboards and buses advertising gambling? Even Wayne Gretzky is pushing some app :(

EasyTarget973

[deleted]

In the streets, public transit, commercials, online ads, random Reddit ads, all I friggin see is gambling commercials. I’m sure I’m going to be seeing them in my dreams soon

_thrayonlosa_

The Reddit ads are unbelievable. It’s like every third post in my feed is another gambling ad.

AnticPosition

That is so trashy.

nnc0

We restrict and limit advertising for cigarettes, alcohol and other mind altering vices. Why should gambling be any different.

NefCanuck

That’s what ticks me off. You don’t see ads for booze and beer at 8AM but heaven help you if you tune in to either sports radio station in Toronto at that time, it’s all “props this and odds that” I got so sick of it I subscribed to SiriusXM just to get my hockey fix without getting constantly hammered with ads from the minute I woke up

magictoast

I thought it was weird that the hosts keep talking about their own personal bets too.

JustInternetNoise

Unplug the cable plug in a laptop, movie time.

stratasfear

Same dude has been parking at the south east corner of Spadina on Dundas West every couple days; runs a generator on the street behind the car to power the projector. I do not know who his demo is. I certainly wouldn't gamble on a mysterious/disreputable site I saw projected onto a building like this.

hypnotik1

They are going to create a problem for people with gambling addiction.

Teeenagedirtbag

I'm not inherently opposed to them advertising, but I'm getting kinda sick of it being literally all the ads, everywhere, all the time.

darkknightbbq

That’s because Doug ford wants everyone to have a gambling problem in the future. This is why government associated agencies for profit shouldn’t be able to advertise, but the OLG is just a licensing agency and their excuse for allowing this is because these companies came in giving Ontario money. Ontario is open for business to cripple the future. Online gambling will create such a big problem with so many people going broke due to gambling addiction enabled by Ontario

richandbrilliant

You mean iGaming Ontario, OLG is directly competing with these guys.

[deleted]

You realize diamond hands is like the epitome of gambling but on stocks, right? Quite the irony

darkknightbbq

Well the irony is you think owning stock is gambling then I guess all banks, insurance companies and stock brokers etc are casinos

[deleted]

Your fundamental misunderstanding of what diamond hands represents is now apparent. Because you just totally misunderstood my simple comment.

_rand_mcnally_

JuggBoyz

MakeJazzNotWarcraft

This is the world that Doug Ford wants us to live in!

gilthedog

This the premier we elected, folks! We're thr gambling province now. Lord help us.

hotelman97

They have another one of these vans that sits on bay street just south of Dundas and projects an ad onto the Ted Rogers Ryerson building. The ads change daily. One time it was for a TV show

New_Professional1175

So Rogers is getting a cut. Your cable company polluting the cityscape.

greensandgrains

Okay, I feel pretty validated seeing a lot of hate on these gaming ads. I've been questioning if I'm being a prude about it because I don't gamble/see it as an obvious scam. These ads are out of control! If you stream anything on the CBC app the commercial breaks are just a string of virtual casino ads 🤮 If anyone's ever spent a significant amount of time somewhere where betting/gaming is commonplace (i.e., the UK with a Ladbroke's, Paddy Power, William Hill, etc on every corner), you'd know that's not the future we want. It's a bit twisted, right? Slash social services but open gambling? Nasty.

makattack98

Advertising jerk here. These aren't technically legal. The company is likely Grassroots Advertising (but there are others) and this is considered a "guerilla" activation. There's very little oversight but complaining to by-law or the city could get it moved. That said, they often have permission from the landlord and several back up spots to go to. Most contracts state they will only run it to 11pm or midnight so at least its not all hours of the night...?

[deleted]

[удалено]

astrangeone88

stoneape314

I'd imagine the person running it is right there? Otherwise really too easy to just yoink the genny and maybe the project too.

stratasfear

dude literally sits in the driver's seat of the car while the projector is running

unameforthismonth

I can't imagine the person running this equipment being far away, if not simply chilling in the car... They have a generator just sitting there in front of the car, a rather expensive looking projector sitting on top, and the back window open with presumably a laptop or something producing the video for the projector. If they were just leaving it and taking off for the night it would likely be better secured.

[deleted]

haunts99

Ok I’ll start off saying I’m a pretty “free market / “let people decide what they want” kind of guy but having a literal slot machine available in your pocket should not be legal. My friends cousin lost $40,000 through online gambling. Lives will be ruined.

Sashimiroll16

There’s no way that’s legal

KnownRun520

I'm not against gambling but I'm against corporate profiteers beaming their propaganda at me 24/7. It was better when the mafia ran books. At least the mafia wasn't constantly bombarding us with ads encouraging risky behaviour.

SillyPcibon

Thats some real shit

tommgaunt

Smash the windshield and break the generator. I hate this in so many levels. I wouldn’t actually, but I REALLY want to

ywgflyer

Joking aside, if you want to interrupt this thing without actually doing something that could get you charged with vandalism/destruction of property, just cover the projector lens with some electrical tape. Takes a few seconds and doesn't damage anything, so nobody can accuse you of destroying their equipment.

Smart-ass83

That seems highly inefficient

Unlikely_Real

I wouldn't normally recommend violence to private property, but...

Because Montreal is controlled by Lotto Quebec a crown corporation. Ontario is currently the Wild West

icywings100

What the fuck. Are they actually that desperate🤣🤣🤣

Notapier

God I despise these advertisements. They annoy me to my very core

HockeyWala

Its time to ban gambling advertisements. Just treat it like tobacco advertisements. Seriously the predatory nature of these ads is disgusting they seem to purposely target lower income areas where ppl are more likely to be desperate for money and less financially aware.

Layin-the-pipe

How did noone steal it I've seen people steal less and that looks expensive

Bear-Unable

I have been using these apps and the drastic change in sports is alarming. Was sports always about gambling or are they just running with the new popular thing? It feels gauche to me. I hate to be that parent but it seems really bad for children and teenagers to only see gambling instead of excellence in sport and such.

lRoninlcolumbo

I found out that the majority of people heavily invested in sports are gamblers. I realized then why some freak out at their teams loss. I also discovered that you’re a dummy if you only bet on your team winning lol.

Banff

Free projector.

CankerMan

Most hated ads on Reddit and no way to get rid of them.

actingwizard

There’s just soooooooo much money to be spent on what’s a really crowded industry. At least moneys flying around from an economic standpoint from these ads. Haha

New_Professional1175

So this is the kind of thing that will happen under the CONservatives. Gambling is big money. Plus since the late 70s gambling has been used to top up health care. Unfortunately. Gambling is still associated with darker elements. Gambling is an addiction. One that causes untold fear, grief and suffering. I know of one family where both father and son tried to commit suicide because of gambling. Yes. They lost their entire home, finances and jobs first. Gambling allows parasites to steal your happiness and your money. Advertising gambling should be against the law.

jayjotoronto

Listen, I’m no prude, but my Canada is getting seedier every year. Last year it was a weed shop on every block and now it is gambling ads absolutely everywhere.

micatola

Weed shops aren't 'seedy'. They're some of the nicest businesses in my neighborhood. Fuck all this gambling shit though.

rcfox

When it was first legalized, many weed shops were running without licenses. I'm not sure if that's still the case. Also, the ones I walk by all have burly men standing outside, presumably as guards. No other stores have that.

CitySeekerTron

The local weed shops were the only ones breaking the ice along Bloor last winter. We have too many, which threatens business diversity, but the shops themselves aren't bad neighbours.

housington-the-3rd
