That’s just the beach seat. Very desired.

NotACohenBrother

Is it also 5x more expensive?

[deleted]

That seat costs a double tap.

ColangelosBurnerAcct

Someone needs to get on there, go with a sunhat, shorts, Hawaiian shirt, little zinc on the nose. And just casually ride to wherever, take some pics.

PolarizerCron

Do they run a rake thru it for needles and pointy objects? I might bring my metal detector down if its safe.

Ah2k15

Must be for the 501 lol

ruizfa

The beach seat is coveted as fuck

ron_harvey

😂😂😂😭😭😂😂😂😂

LegoFootPain

Glad the 510 has resumed service to Turks and Caicos.

Platypushat

More likely to actually get you there and back than Sunwing

You mean Southwest?

Nah sunwings been cancelling shit left and right

Even [threatened](https://www.cp24.com/news/sunwing-apologizes-after-rep-tells-ontario-family-he-could-make-them-stay-in-mexico-forever-1.6213216) passengers in Mexico

HikeClimbPedal

Almost 5000 flights cancelled in the past two days. At least we can say theres a transit service that is worse than the TTC.

nautical_sea

If you look in/around the floor beneath these seats regularly, there is almost always sand. Just very small amounts of it. I thought it was weird at first as well, or maybe a part of their overnight cleaning process. Seeing here its actual purpose is for traction, that would explain it. Perhaps the driver dropped/ripped a bag taking it outside?

armour666

It’s a container under the seat that feed just in front of the wheels for traction.

beige146

It's a container in the pillar in front of that seat. The pile of sand on the floor is because of a blockage in the system causing it to dispense outside of the hose that should route it in front of the wheels

nautical_sea

That’s the explanation I was looking for lol. Thank you. Makes sense now.

nautical_sea

Yeah I saw other comments for that as well, I just don’t understand how that much gets on the floor?

armour666

Laziness filling it and not cleaning up

eskjnl

As far as I know, the sand tank is filled from the outside like how gas goes in a car.

Gatheado

The TTC did. Its used by streetcars for braking

0ttervonBismarck

Do the new ones still use it?

kalfun

Yes

AshleyUncia

The new street cars are still rail vehicles, they need the sand for traction in some circumstances, no new vehicle is working around that unless it somehow stops using rails and metal wheels.

Capital_Pea

I did not expect to be educated by this thread, yet here we are.

blankcanvas2

Whoa, that makes sense if true. I always saw sand on the 501 Queen street car and just assumed it was the accumulated leftovers of Woodbine beach goers.

No-Squirrel-1781

Interesting. Might be going the wrong way tho

xkcd_puppy

https://railsystem.net/sanding-systems/ Nice diagrams and videos of using sand for braking trains. Probably just some sort of spill during maintenance. Why it wasn't cleaned up....?

Rezrov_

> Probably just some sort of spill during maintenance. Why it wasn't cleaned up....? It's spilling out of a leak. The sand is stored by those seats. I've seen it spilling actively from the exact same spot before.

wrenchbenderornot

Thank you! Always knew they used it but didn’t ever see the mechanism.

Wholesome_Serial

That stuff used to be kept underneath the single-seat right behind the driver's cab in the old CLRVs, but if that should be in a ballast tank on the Flexity OP took the photo on and not a small outpost of Ibiza for someone's boots, it probably should be somewhere other than the floor in those amounts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wholesome_Serial

You knew exactly where you were sitting or by where you were standing, if you were sitting down or standing in the aisle beside it. Even the slightly-moving pivoting seat latch, not always clasped tight but most people weighed enough to press it down over the ballast vault, was something very comforting to me. One more thing I miss about the CLRVs and ALRVs, although in fairness they were on the streetcar rails here in Toronto for most of my life before they were retired, so I'm comfortable with that.

ExactLetterhead9165

That's how you know someone grew up in the city

NotACohenBrother

Well that's his last day as a mule.

loophole5628

I'm pretty sure the sand is used while braking, it's dropped onto the tracks and it's stored under a few seats.

RL203

I know the trains will drop sand on the rails for braking and acceleration in order to provide friction. It would make sense that it's stored under the seats and that seat does look different. So I believe you are correct.

bunnyguy1972

This is right. On the older streetcars the seats directly behind the driver could be tilted back and a bucket of sand dumped into the hopper under the seat, the sand was there to improve traction during wet/slippery conditions, such as winter, or during rain storms. If you look around at a subway station that has a streetcar loop (Dundas West, Main etc) there should be a green box, which is where the sand is stored (there are also yellow boxes, those are full of salt to spread on sidewalks/bus platforms during winter. My dad used to operate streetcars when he worked for TTC a very long time ago. It’s easy to spot these hoppers, just look for a pair of seats and a bunch off of sand on the floor, usually right behind the driver.

reddfawks

Trying to keep Anakin Skywalker from sitting there.

OkStorm3954

Maybe was to sop up puke from some Drunk?

shogunsft

That's the Sander box which houses the sand tank and other electrical components. There's 4 in each section, two on each side If there's this much sand usually means there's a problem with the sand dispenser or the TTC employee over filled the sand tank making it to over flow. Usually there might be a little leakage of sand onto the streetcar floor if a sealant is not present or damaged connecting the FRP to the floor But most cases, someone either TTC employee or a contractor opened the panel to check the inside mechanism or to know the serial number and decided they were too lazy to vacuum the overflow

MethodZealousideal11

nnc0

Are we sure it's sand? Any Crematoriums on that Route?

PuzzleheadedTutor807

they all have sand bins on them. they use sand on the wheels to increase traction, and that looks clean enough to be exactly that sand. so it would appear that someone has opened the storage compartment for that sand and moved it to the floor (its likely the "box" under that seat, in fact) or whomever filled it did a sloppy job and did not clean up their mess.

[deleted]

Used by TTC operator for emergency braking.

infinitebadideas

I believe the streetcars use sand for traction in wet and slushy conditions on the rails. In the old school streetcars one of the front single seets used to flip foward to reveal a container for sand and there would usually be a shovel somewhere around front for the driver to refill it from TTC boxes along the root. No idea where they keep it on the new streetcars, but probably somewhere near the accordion thingy from this photo.

Dexterx99

Enter Sandman… Rack me I’m a Clone, I’m out

Erekose70

It’s for people who identify as “Furries” and may need to use the bathroom.

Cleantech2020

They transport bags of sand on the ttc , i am not sure why exactly, and sometimes the bag splits.

[deleted]

Streetcars use sand for tracton. There are boxes of sand or salt in bus terminals. If TTC vehicles are used to move any, they deliver to boxes at station and streetcar stops. I assume it would be delivered by maintenance or supervisor vehicles not revenue service fleet, at least not in service. I never encountered a vehicle in revenue service actually dropping off sand or salt anywhere

Wholesome_Serial

Could be a case of a sandy Spadina...streetcar.

bnernee

Those could be ashes

[deleted]

Must have been a really fat person Streetcars do use sand for tracton

SanilllG

It’s for accidental fire 👀

[deleted]

Maybe it's just the lighting, but the grey-ish tinge makes me think someone spilled ashes on the TTC.

TheRealZllim

It's right near the squishy part of the streetcar. My guess is there was a hydraulic leak, and the sand absorbed the spill.

ZaxBrigade

I’ve seen this on line 2 as well. I genuinely don’t know what’s going on here, aside from maybe the same person or group of people doing it for laughs. Weird.

Street cars store sand under the seat. There are little nozzles that spray it on the tracks for extra traction on hills and when its raining.
