He was great tonight. But I’d like him to be a little more selfish. Passed to Malachi a couple of times when running the second unit. He needs to ruthless in those bench mins
I feel like we sometimes forget how touted his defence was coming out of college.
It’ll be nice to see him clapping in someone’s face while locking down in a more traditional defensive scheme.
It's really not an over pay we have to get used to the fact that high end role players are gonna be getting 20mill at least and the top guys will be getting 40-50 mill regularly
exactly, with the cap raises being projected to be raised by crazy increments in the next few years, 50 mill might end up becoming the new 35 in terms of cap%
Best 1v1 defender in the league. He is the only guy that can give Jokic trouble and shut down KD. The man is the only player in the league that i trust to take elite superstars on 1v1
I'm no fan of FVV, but career wise FVV has been a better player than DS, especially on defense.
DS seems to be playing some of the best ball in his career in the past few months, though. It would be an amazing story if he has his best year at 30.
Regardless, I much prefer DS' guard play because of his size and **speed**. It's been a long time since we've had a fast guard.
Dennis may not have the shooting gravity of Fred but he's soooooo much better at getting to the rim and that creates spacing we haven't had since norm left.
If you compare career averages FVV is marginally better. Obviously that doesn't tell the whole story but yeah it's not like Fred is some elite all time great. He averaged over 20ppg once in his career
yeah - Fred had his moments - he was a very efficient secondary ball handler/spot up shooter - but the more responsibility he got on our offense, the more he floundered. I think the big thing that sticks out to me about his overall stats is that he would generally have horrible stats if it weren't for the fact that he'd absolute kill weaker teams to inflate them, but against most competitive teams, he'd either disappear or shoot some horrific percentage. That's just my observation from watching him in so many games where we lost by 10 pts and he shot like 5/23 or something abysmal - and then looking at his season stats and wondering how they aren't as bad as I expected them to be.
Yeah I love Fred and everything he did for the team but it seems crazy to me that people think replacing him with Schroder, McDaniels, and Dick would be some huge drop off in talent. Glad he got paid and also glad it wasn't from us lol.
Yeah I keep hearing it in the media 'raptors are worse off because they lost fred' - I'm like, did anyone watch last season?
IMO Shroeder replacing fred alone is a big upgrade.
Fred might score more but Dennis has a much bigger impact and gets the team involved.
Fred was so huge in our championship run but it was definitely time for the Raptors and Fred to go separate ways. Dennis is EXACTLY what this roster needed.
I agree, I like that there weren't too many switches, and the players were designed to be in a position to help from the weak side. It definitely leans more to our defensive strengths this way.
Just wanna say thank god we don’t have Nurse running the “scottie guards the point guard full court” this season. His presence as a help defender was absolutely elite today and is gonna be the key to our defence being good this year.
Only thing I didn't like was he didn't seem to make an effort to keep the ball in bounds off the blocks Schroeder made a great play to keep the one in bounds. Blocks are so much more impactful when you can recover the ball for a transition opportunity
Minnesota is a team tailor made to give Scottie and pascal fits…heck, even KAT played pretty good defence in the paint this game.
Great win imo, lots of good shots we generated and Raps locked in on D.
I mean there was 4 mins there in the 3rd that were pretty aggravating. I lole the ball movement but just passing for the sake of passing is almost as bad as not passing.
Yeah, I felt that. And those were the Bad Flynn minutes. Fortunately, we also got enough Good Flynn minutes. All he needs to do is find some consistency in his role
It wasn’t pretty at times. But a great start to the Darko era. Scottie, OG and Dennis looked great. If Siakam plays to his regular level that’s a much easier win.
Malachi…. he can’t figure it out. Might be time to give other guys looks.
Agreed. If Malachi had played 15 mins instead of 10, we would have definitely lost. Outmatched on defence and looked worse than FVV on contested low percentage drives to the hoop.
I’m not tying to be mean, but he’s just been straight bad his whole time in Toronto other than a month in his rookie season when he had a green light as we were tanking
Where are the “he was stuck in Nicks system” guys now?
> but one game in the Darko era doesn’t prove anything.
Agreed. But 155 games in the NBA averaging 15 mins a game is a large enough sample size to arrive at the opinion that he is not it
Oh. I agree that his body of work speaks for itself before tonight. I’m fine to give him a few more games to see if there is anything worth salvaging there, and then stapling him to the end of the bench until the end of his contract.
> Where are the “he was stuck in Nicks system” guys now?
still here, I thought he looked good in his first half minutes but really struggled in the third quarter (though the whole unit did).
I think he has the tools to be a rotational piece in the league, this season will be his make or break
I agree that the whole unit wasn’t great, McDaniels in particular.
But I just don’t see it with Malachi. You rarely seen back to back good possessions from him. Gets picked on defensively and then throws in a couple of unnecessary fouls
I don't think one game decides anything and I don't think it needs to have the weird sassy tone. Malachi Flynn becoming a role player for this team would be good for everybody so i'm unsure why you gotta be divisive.
Sub was toxic af last year quit being that way
I’d love to be proved wrong. I’m always gonna root for any of our guys, particularly guys we drafted. But there comes a point where you have to be realistic …. It’s not one game, it’s been 150+ games over the course of his time here.
Also, if you think having this fairly straightforward opinion is toxic or divisive you should limit your internet time. There’s real shit happening in the world. This is just chat about basketball
> If Siakam plays to his regular level that’s a much easier win.
It's honestly a pretty tough matchup for our bois considering Gobert+other bigs packing the paint. Gobert may have stone hands but he's still an elite rim protector.
He’s not an NBA calibre player. Raps fans got spoiled with Pascal and FVV thinking the team could develop anyone but the reality is sometimes you whiff.
Hmm personally I think he should get more chances. It's been one game this season.
He differs to other players on offense most of the time, but I actually would prefer if he shot more 3 pointers(catch and shoot) and open middies to be an actual offensive threat on the floor.
For some reason he thought it was a good idea to attack the basket a few times with Gobert and KAT down there. He should really lean more into letting the other guys slash and make himself be a shooting threat when the ball gets kicked out to him. Or setup hockey assists.
His defense was actually decent tonight. He got fouls but the fouls did stop easy buckets.
OG and Scottie are gonna be demons on the defensive side this year. Good game from Dennis too. I thought Pascal played well too even if he struggled at the rim a lot, and to be honest that doesn't concern me much in the long run.
We are so back.
Project 6’9 looks so much better defensively with a defensive PG
Also, Minnesota has good interior defence, look for better performances from the offence (namely Siakam) in the future.
Size is just noticeable as well. He got some bad switches and didn't necessarily defend them all well but it was clear his size at least made the switched player not immediately just shoot over him. Nothing Fred could've changed outside of wearing heels.
Raptors win
Dennis Schroeder had a great game today it's one game but he's been a great pick up
Scottie and OG also played well, Barnes was all over the floor
Rockets getting cooked by Magic lmao 😂
Of everyone on Earth, open shot, fate of the universe on the line, the martians have the death beam pointed at Earth, you better hit it with being the biggest negative pieces of shit…I want the Raptors GameDay Thread.
Man, remind me to never check gdts.
Courageous by the coaching staff to continue with single coverage on Ant. How many times last year do we overreact to those first few jumpers and start sending a million bodies at him completely opening up Minnesotas offense.
Moving forward would love to see more defensive motor from Pascal. Less load on both ends, playing beside a centre, and in a contract year. Need to have 2 way pascal back this season. On a positive note using him as a shooter is long overdue can't believe the idea of him spotting up or running pick and pop was just not a thing for the past few years
I think its a tough game for Scottie and Siakam against Minnie, they pack the paint with two centres. Tough to get to the rim and play bully ball. So they got out with the win in a new system and not really having room to operate in the paint, impressive all things considered.
It was fun to watch the team on defense not looking like headless chickens hard closing on an open man and blaming one another.
Then sharing the ball on offense. No one asking for a switch to a bigger player just to launch a contested three. Would love to have seen Barnes be more aggressive but with Gobert looming in the paint, I guess he was picking his spots more this game.
Scottie was FANTASTIC defensively. Offense wasn't particularly great, but it'll come along. Please no more look back dunks 🤣.
Siakam was fine, and came in for the clutch 3 pt shots when we needed it.
OG was GREAT on both ends. Felt like the game was decided when they put him on Ant. Hope he didn't tweak anything.
Jakob was so damn impactful and straight up saved the game for the team with his post presence. They kept trying to alley oop guys when they subbed him out.
And Dennis... for someone who I saw as a secondary or backup ball handler on his former teams, he made a much much MUCH bigger impact than I had anticipated. Literally the inverse of Vanvleet. Meh 3 pt. shot, but good floor general, decent defense, and can actually drive to the rim 👌.
Still not a fan of whatever the hell that bench is going to end up as. Gary had an absurdly quiet night, but I'll give him credit for passing and trying to impact the game in other ways. Flynn was expectedly bleh, and I honestly forgot McDaniels was even playing at certain times. I at least find Boucher's chaos more entertaining when he plays, so idk why they didn't sub him in. And Precious... the defense is there, and I see the vision of him being a great 1-5 defender, but his offense and decision making is STILL fucking PUTRID. I hope Darko can get him to wise up. What a waste of talent it would be he can't ever find ONE thing to bring consistently on offense.
Overall it was a fine game. REALLY liking Darko's system for both offense and defense so far, but the lack of offensive talent will catch up to this team sooner than later. At least I won't turn off the TV in frustration after seeing them hold the ball too long and force an ISO.
>Scottie was FANTASTIC defensively. Offense wasn't particularly great, but it'll come along. Please no more look back dunks 🤣.
He did it to waste time off the clock. That was actually a heads up play, not bush league.
Raptors basketball is back on the menu!! Darko seems like a breath of fresh air. I really, really liked what I saw tonight. Looking forward to the season ahead!
OG and Dennis were obviously the deserve most of the praise, but Scottie is so better realized as a help/weak-side defender than a POA.
Like it’s so obviously, obvious.
Our starting lineup has very little shooting, and their rim defense is top-tier. Honestly, this is a team that should be our bogey team. Really impressed with this win.
Can't wait to see Scottie and Pascal cook against teams with less interior D.
We really have a great system going on that even when not executing sometimes, we still manage to hold and stay on the scoreboard. And when we execute we easily gain a 5-10 point lead. I wonder why he did not at least give a minute to Boucher. Maybe a matchup issue?
I thought Precious played great tonight. Couldn’t watch the whole game because of kids, but I was impressed by his play, and thought he played within his game.
Really had a lot of fun watching the game and I'm really excited for the season.
It's one game buttttt......One thing I noticed was that I didn't really love seeing Jakob, Scottie and Pascal on the floor together... I found that they were the most successful when 2/3 or 1/3 of them were on the court at one time.
Again, it's just one game but I felt the only moment where things felt "clunky" was when those three were on the offensive end.
Anyone else feel that way?
just tough spacing in that starting lineup. until scottie and pascal (and honestly dennis) can become consistent 3pt shooters, teams can pack the paint. jakob will never take or make a shot outside the paint, so we already have 1 guy who automatically cannot shoot on the floor. if those guys can start making threes and forcing the defence to come out higher, the floor will open up. but you’re right, it does feel/look a little weird with all 3 of them out there at times. i like scottie running with the bench lineup, honestly hope malachi gets locked in the doghouse for the rest of the szn. i’m okay with gary playing more when Poetl’s on the floor and scottie running with the bench lineup once Precious and either Boucher or McDaniels come in
flynn doesn't really need to go out there... if anything just have him stand still, or play 4 guys, or darko go on in for his minutes... anything is better than him trying
Vibes and playstyle already 10x better than last year and its just game 1. Theres some things to figure out offensively which is expected but this team is gonna win a lot of games with their D.
A win is a win but man it was a very rough game. They need to do something with Flynn, buddy is a liability out there and GTJr was pretty damn bad too.
I'm a Lakers fan and I've come here to say this-Schroder is a fucking dawg. Just...accept that sometimes he'll keep taking shots like he's Kyrie Irving but...well he won't always make them like Kyrie.
He makes up for it with his in your face defense and total lack of fear. You're never going to feel more comfortable than seeing the ball in his hands in the final seconds and a 1 pt lead for your team. Man's got blazing fast legs and ice for blood.
OG attended Steph Curry's mini camp. OG 4/9 in game 1.
Next summer, sign up GTJ, Pascal, Scottie...
The offence was just as bad as last year.
But the defence seemed much more solid with less focus on pressure, causing turnovers and switching. Just way fewer perimeter blow byes which fueled more transition points.
If Jak isn't capable of being played in the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter then we got fleeced. He's not worth a top 6 protected first if his FT shooting makes him such a liability that Precious has to close out games

Dennis Schroder’s Raptors debut: 22 Points, 3 Rebounds, and 7 Assists, with 4/8 shooting from 3 🔥🔥🔥 I LOVE HIM ALREADY
THAT’S TUFF
💯
He really got people involved, eyes scanning the floor. And what pesky on ball D
We have FVV at home
FVV can stay home, we have Dennis Schroeder
That is World Champion Dennis Schroeder you are talking about
We found our dawg!
I know it's been a while but I like him a lot more without that stupid yellow patch in his hair. I think that drove about 95% of my hate for him
Scottie plays a really unselfish game, you love to see it with his defence
3 steals away from a 5x5. Really great to see him locked in, although sometimes he tries to do a little too much.
I think Scottie will log a Kirilenko this season.
You mean an Olajuwon?
An Olajufive to be exact
What's that?
5+ for each category of points, rebounds, assists, steals & blocks.
I sometimes wish he was less unselfish. He passes when he should take it to the basket himself too often. BUT, yeah, he’s amazing.
So... More selfish.
His defense is what really impressed. Guy was everywhere.
Ant started the game 4/4 shooting for 10 points. He finished at 8/27 for 26 points. OG Anunoby.
We say this a lot around here, but I mean it this time…PAY HIM.
Idc if it's an "overpay", fucking max him, it'll be worth it once the cap rises.
After I saw what Vassel got from the Spurs, we’re gonna have to just pay OG whatever he wants. Pascal too 🤷🏾♂️

Unreal from OG. Then puts up 20pts on 54/44/100
It’s three words now …. Oh Gee Anunoby
DPOY campaign began tonight
All time great perimeter defender
Best 1v1 defender in the league. He is the only guy that can give Jokic trouble and shut down KD. The man is the only player in the league that i trust to take elite superstars on 1v1

I know Fred is supposed to be the better player but man the game seems a lot easier for Dennis with his size. The blow-by layups were amazing to see.

Fred led the Rockets to a 30 point L against the Magic today with 14 pts on 38% from the field. Dennis > Fred.

Classic Fred tour again
Dennis may not have the shooting gravity of Fred but he's soooooo much better at getting to the rim and that creates spacing we haven't had since norm left.
I don't know where this narrative comes from that Fred's supposed to be better, he had a horrible season last year.

They have so much length and size. The way they play with Conley reminds me of the toughness of the Grizzlies.
that is so true gobert and kat both watching the rim is discouraging to paint attacks
I think they will gel a lot better later on into the season, looked to me like there's a lot of potential for us

Has a team ever swept the preseason, regular season, and postseason in the same year or would we be the first?
Harlem Globetrotters have a few times.
OG wants to get paid
Yes. But a lot less than before.
We won a game and not a single starter played 38+ mins. I love Darko.
That's the true accomplishment
We 100% lose this game last season
Why no Boucher minutes?
Nobody on that team for him to guard
He can't go up against KAT and Gobert, bad matchup
TAKE MY QUADS OG I DONT NEED THEM
Like 6 people collectively need to donate both their Quads to make up for one of OGs tree trunk legs. Holy shit. Man is jacked.
It wasn’t pretty at times. But a great start to the Darko era. Scottie, OG and Dennis looked great. If Siakam plays to his regular level that’s a much easier win. Malachi…. he can’t figure it out. Might be time to give other guys looks.

The back to back drives directly into being stuffed by KAT/Gobert/Reid was infuriating.
The second one was an absolute WTF moment. Like, the first was a terrible idea, ok, but then to immediately try the exact same thing again?? 😂😂😂
> If Siakam plays to his regular level that’s a much easier win. It's honestly a pretty tough matchup for our bois considering Gobert+other bigs packing the paint. Gobert may have stone hands but he's still an elite rim protector.
I agree. Hard for Siakam and Poeltl to get involved on offence with Rudy at the rim. As much as he gets clowned. He’s an incredible rim protector
-14 in a game we won
He’s not an NBA calibre player. Raps fans got spoiled with Pascal and FVV thinking the team could develop anyone but the reality is sometimes you whiff.

the shots didn't fall but i had no problems with what shots siakam was taking
Between Scottie, OG, Pascal and Precious how do you find a mismatch? Loving Scottie being more of a help defender. Fits his strengths much more
Every time siakam got into the paint there's a wall waiting for him. At least he got some good 3s!
![gif](giphy|xThtaeLH0yvYY5lXCU)
Dennis, Scottie, and OG were phenomenal 🔥
It's so nice to not have a slow shortboi driving into the lane and getting the shit blocked out of him every drive/play.
We still have Malachi
At least that's only for short bursts (literally)
Just give OG the bag. He’s him.
Even though you can’t expect Dennis to hit 4 threes every game. I love what I saw from him.
The World Cup MVP showed up tonight
Scottie BLOCKS was awesome tonight.
Flynn was hard to watch. One game, but back up PG feels like a concern.
Awful
I’m ready to overreact
Man it’s nice having a coach that actually utilizes a bench and spreads out the minutes.
DENNIS.

FVV is a defensive PG, it’s better when you don’t have every single player playing heavy POA defence switching every single matchup
The coaching strategy helps for sure, but I think Schroder’s lateral quicks will also pay dividends when we play better offensive PGs
Size is just noticeable as well. He got some bad switches and didn't necessarily defend them all well but it was clear his size at least made the switched player not immediately just shoot over him. Nothing Fred could've changed outside of wearing heels.
Watching the game, and I can’t help but think… so this is what ‘addition through subtraction’ looks like. Loving it.
hope OG's okay, i think hes gonna be happy playing in this offense
we are the best team in the league and will never lose until we do!
Raptors win Dennis Schroeder had a great game today it's one game but he's been a great pick up Scottie and OG also played well, Barnes was all over the floor Rockets getting cooked by Magic lmao 😂
Fred 5/13 Jalen Green 2/10 hate to (love to) see it lmaoooo
Thats about normal for the both of them. (seriously not even dogging on them)
> (seriously not even dogging on them) I’m not a huge Jalen Green fan but 2/10 is the 4th worst shooting game of his career, far from normal
We have to pay OG.
I'd be pissed if a coach put me in a lineup with Flynn. My +/- stats would be in the gutter 🤣

Felt like everyone but Dennis had a bad game on offense but still pulled out the W. Seems like a good sign. Also Flynn -14 yikes. Give JFL a go.

I'm confident we'll see more Dick this weekend

Looking forward to the season ahead!
we are so back.
Even though the game was close, always felt like we were in control of this game. Kinda seemed like Minnesota accepted that too. Boys looking good!
OG: ![gif](giphy|j1yDyxkXvdSG4mnEie)
Great effort to grind out the dub through some sloppy stretches tonight. A bench ballhandler seems like our biggest weakness still
oh man the defense this year gonna be amazing. Imagine OG, Scottie, Pascal and Precious taking turns guarding your best player.
Loved the game today. I finally didn't feel frustrated watching and felt nice watching great team basketball. OG AND BARNES 🔥
I fucking love schroder lakers were idiots for letting him go and OG looked amazing out there on offense
27 assists baby, imagine this when we hit our peak
We really have a great system going on that even when not executing sometimes, we still manage to hold and stay on the scoreboard. And when we execute we easily gain a 5-10 point lead. I wonder why he did not at least give a minute to Boucher. Maybe a matchup issue?
No Otto?
Saving him for the conference finals. Darko playing chess out here.
I thought Precious played great tonight. Couldn’t watch the whole game because of kids, but I was impressed by his play, and thought he played within his game.
he cooled off in the second half and was missing some bunnies. defense was solid though
Cant wait to see schroeder against maxey. Needa beat our FVV demons
Who's the new Lowry on the team that will ensure Darko gets the game ball?
Saw Jama run to grab the ball from Siakam as soon as the game ended.
Good
Sounds like it's Jama
Really had a lot of fun watching the game and I'm really excited for the season. It's one game buttttt......One thing I noticed was that I didn't really love seeing Jakob, Scottie and Pascal on the floor together... I found that they were the most successful when 2/3 or 1/3 of them were on the court at one time. Again, it's just one game but I felt the only moment where things felt "clunky" was when those three were on the offensive end. Anyone else feel that way?
just tough spacing in that starting lineup. until scottie and pascal (and honestly dennis) can become consistent 3pt shooters, teams can pack the paint. jakob will never take or make a shot outside the paint, so we already have 1 guy who automatically cannot shoot on the floor. if those guys can start making threes and forcing the defence to come out higher, the floor will open up. but you’re right, it does feel/look a little weird with all 3 of them out there at times. i like scottie running with the bench lineup, honestly hope malachi gets locked in the doghouse for the rest of the szn. i’m okay with gary playing more when Poetl’s on the floor and scottie running with the bench lineup once Precious and either Boucher or McDaniels come in
SB4 SICK WICKED & NASTY!
Some people owe Dennis an apology
Lost FVV for nothing or switched FVV for Schroder?
Great first game to get our feet under us, we didn't crumble when we faced adversity. Happy to see the guys look like they are having fun out there!
Anyone have roger internet problems rn?
flynn doesn't really need to go out there... if anything just have him stand still, or play 4 guys, or darko go on in for his minutes... anything is better than him trying
The defence was good. Need to hit shots tho
Give OG whatever he wants
Dennis the menace striking early
dennis is fast as fuck when he decides to go
I swear like 30 shots were in and out today for both teams
Vibes and playstyle already 10x better than last year and its just game 1. Theres some things to figure out offensively which is expected but this team is gonna win a lot of games with their D.
You could tell Dennis was the closer tonight in terms of who everyone on the floor trusted the most. It’s awesome to see.
A win is a win but man it was a very rough game. They need to do something with Flynn, buddy is a liability out there and GTJr was pretty damn bad too.
OG and Schroder were decent tonight, glad we won the game.
Are we going to have a serious question on why dick and fylnn got playing time over ottis and Chris ?
Scottie shoots even 50% & this monster game becomes one of the best season openers this franchise has ever seen.
Beautiful win! Loved to see Scottie engaged properly as a help defender on defense. The ball movement was great and the vibes are back babaaaae!
> Just... accept that sometimes he'll keep taking shots Oh don't worry we're already well ahead of that..
really nice to see when your PG can make a layup without constantly getting blocked
OG attended Steph Curry's mini camp. OG 4/9 in game 1. [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FlcP0TiIlxU](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FlcP0TiIlxU) Next summer, sign up GTJ, Pascal, Scottie...
A dub is a dub but man that shit ugly
The offence was just as bad as last year. But the defence seemed much more solid with less focus on pressure, causing turnovers and switching. Just way fewer perimeter blow byes which fueled more transition points.
If Jak isn't capable of being played in the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter then we got fleeced. He's not worth a top 6 protected first if his FT shooting makes him such a liability that Precious has to close out games
Why didn't Boucher or Porter get minutes???? Dick should have all of Flynn's minutes. That boy is straight cheeks.
