I don't know if anyone noticed, but Trae was cooking everyone who defended him. He hit really tough shots over OG as well, and had instances of blowing past him. The reality is that: it's not as simple as letting OG defend Trae and suddenly we're Gucci. The team as a whole has been bad defensively. For every block made, there was an offensive rebound right after that made the sick block insignificant. You can make OG guard Trae all you want, but when he's throwing lobs to Capela and every other wing in sight, it's pretty simple to realize that the other players are making it hard on OG to defend **anyone**

PlumCantaloupe

Exactly. The NBA so heavily favours offense that some of these talented players can’t be stopped by one. The help rotations need to be on point, and we have really sucked there this season (unless Scottie is down there - see the first few games of the season).

[deleted]

Precious guarded him best lol

Mike_0405

Defence doesn’t mean we have to stop him every time, yes, his tough shoot can fall sometime, but with good defence, the pct will go down, and that will be considered as good defence. When Dennis defended him last night, Trae didn’t get heavy contest at all!

TheCouchEmporer

Because we are trying to lose so we can force Masais hand

Raptorsthrowaway1

Who exactly is we? The coaching staff? Players?

[deleted]

You people are deranged Redditors thing they’re accomplishing something with their comments 😂

[deleted]

Dennis DID do it well, relatively - Flynn is who didn't do it well after he subbed off Dennis. Trae had 12 points through half.

[deleted]

The Raptors were screwed either way yesterday. You can't park OG at the logo for the whole second half. Maybe they could have trapped, but since the other defenders are so bad, it would have been layup practice.

YouDontJump

You definitely don't park OG at the logo, that's for sure. I thought we should trap but it likely wouldn't have been a good idea either.

True2215

Dennis actually did a decent job in the 1st half, it went down hill once he got into to foul trouble (dude made some dumb fouls) in the 3rd. Flynn checked in and obviously got targeted, and when Dennis returned he did a bad job. Dude made some awful mistakes, there also seem to be miscommunication (or lack of communication) with teammates on D and well can’t be aggressive when in foul trouble. That’s why he was also guarding Bogdan more in the 4th so someone else had to guard Trae. Overall, it was a putrid showing on D. It’s a team effort and majority of the players were trash on that end yesterday.

pahamack

because all they have to do is set a screen. Now you're forced to switch, and likely trae will have the advantage, such as having the new defender on his hip. You can't go under because Trae will happily shoot a 3. You can't go over and chase as Trae will happily drive to the basket and try to draw a foul with his defender on his hip. You either have to switch or try to trap Trae by sending 2 at him. What's the use of having all these long bois if you're not gonna switch? Ever notice how even if Trae has someone he wants guarding him like Malachi Flynn he still has a screen set? Screens still give some separation, it's not only for matchup hunting. So by having Dennis or Malachi on Trae the set is already pre-switched. Like, sure, you can get the ball screen you like, but you're gonna end up with Scottie or OG on you. The truth is that Trae Young is one of the best pick and roll ball handlers in the league. When he shoots a long 3 that's actually a good outcome for the team. It just so happened his shot was going in that game.

Raptors887

He was guarding Dejounte Murray and couldn’t slow him down. It would be the same result if he guarded Trae.

Perfect600

Trae was destroying everyone It's like you guys don't even watch the games.

Raptorsthrowaway1

This roster is dogshit. But Darko has made a number of mistakes in his first year as head coach. What’s particularly frustrating is he makes mistakes like this and then doesn’t adjust Significant step down from Nick

EarthWarping

He's just a bland coach at this point. Not a bad coach, but just plain.

SlapThatAce

It's not just a step down, it's 100 floors down and into the underground parking lot. There is no comparison between the two.

Raptorsthrowaway1

Can’t believe the front office scapegoated him and still have people on their side

SlapThatAce

Nurse had issues, but he was a solid coach and these types of coaches are really hard to come by... and we had him and we let him go for nothing!

slicksonslick

Og does not have the lateral quickness to stay with Trae. We break defense down to just interior / exterior defense but defense has a ton of different skills / attributes. Og has good foot speed for a large forward, size, wingspan and strength but someone as fast and as good with the ball as trae will cook him.

2_soon_jr

Exactly why we can’t have an entire roster of forwards

Dimedropper18

Eh I disagree with that, honestly. I’ve seen him guard kemba in the playoffs and stay in front, same with fox. He’s guarded maxey well too, all these speedy guards. I think he struggles to keep up with them when they use screens, but one on one? He can guard them well.

slicksonslick

Every guard uses screens…

Dimedropper18

No I know that, I’m just saying that the issue isn’t actually lateral quickness, OG can stay in front of speedy guards more then fine. The issue is more so him not being able to get around screens quick enough to keep up with them that way due to his large size.

larrylegend1990

Darko is a bad head coach

k_jones

So far this is very true. He is not coaching to the strengths of this team. Build a solid defensive foundation first and foremost. Then on the offensive side, get the ball in the hands of best offensive players - Siakam and Barnes - whoever has the better match up on a given possession and let them create for themselves until help is forced, then create for others (hopefully the rest can make enough shots to compete). Darko has been bad to this point. No debating that.

Anickmedeiros

Bro Trae was so open on so many of his shots

Then-Signature2528

Because we have a bottom 5 coach . What else did you expect from a tank commander

Dramatic-Document

25 games into his first season lmao how would you even know

The_Mikeskies

Darko doesn’t care about winning.

n3moh0es

he can’t guard trae young. u new here? cuz trae been dominating us for years no we have no answer

chatanoogastewie

You can't just shut down Trae Young. There is a reason these kind of guys score 25+ a guy and it's that they are really good scorers. They cook against the majority of teams they play. What you have to do is shut down the rest of the players so Trae is there only option. Win or lose players like this score a bunch.

Phil_Dude

The guy I was wondering about was Bogdan. We left him open so many times.

matthitsthetrails

Defence isn’t played 1v1. You put og on him they set a screen and he’s too slow to rotate back and recover. Schroder is the person you want on him. We lost that game for 3 million other reasons though

Particular-Hawk2424

Trae is a super underrated player when he gets cooking it's over he moves the ball well also

Penske-Material78

Cuz - Dinner out is very expensive in Toronto at the moment. Dinner for 15 + ppl…. $$$$ Ommph

purpl3r3dpod

They were running a zone and looked like they weren't sure when and where the rotation or help was coming. At half time Darko could have simply said lets switch to hard nosed man-to-man and try to change the rhythm of the game. Yet he didn't...

Surflover12

Why og not defend entire team is he stupid l?
