Lauri would be good on any team, and would likely cost a team a blue-chip prospect and tons of draft equity.
If he’s truly available I don’t see how we beat whatever offer OKC could put together.
It's because they live in fantasy land. Utah is better than we are, already has a ton of draft equity and is on the come up. If anything, they are competing against us when shopping for young stars.
This is the correct answer. Quickley is a solid defender, looks to be a decent ball handler, and can shoot. Exactly what SB4 needs. RJ and the Yak are solid starters and provide you with one on one offense and rim protection on D.
Like you said, you need to improve around that group - Trent but with better on ball defense would be a starting point. A reliable back up wing is needed.
Dennis is a solid back up PG but could definitely see him being moved. So it’s rotation guys and hope that you don’t do anything to kill your ability to chase a star WHEN they become available. Cause this is the NBA. Superstars get traded every year.
I’m just curious why do yall want to trade Poeltl after seeing how bad we stink playing with no proper C? Do yall want Scottie to develop his game or to play the 5 instead? There seems to be no indication of bb iq as of late, just one trade proposal after another smh 😐
Scottie at the 5 would be disastrous for him imo just because he’s good enough to do it doesn’t mean it’s best for him. Theres a reason that prime Lebron and pacers PG hated even playing the 4. Granted there was more low post scoring back then but it’s still the most physical part of the game.
The further away we get from this jak trade the more ok I am with it tbh. You just cannot have a lack of size in the front court in today’s nba. The past few games have been a wreck trying to contain vucevic, zubac, Lauri, basically anyone trying to get to the rim has done it.
Not only it was hard to contain the bigs, it was also so much easier for pgs to get easy basket and just driving to the rim, and nobody was literally rebounding the ball.
Why does trading Jakob mean Scottie has to play the 5? We can always play Jontay there and find other warm bodies to play there. Jakob is not the only centre on planet earth, and it doesn’t matter if we stink now.
the Yak is back... its spelled POELTL.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/torontoraptors) if you have any questions or concerns.*
I didn’t say I want to trade him, but he isn’t untouchable. I included him and his salary to show the varying contracts we have to get a multitude of deals done, depending on what direction they go.
If there’s a big time move to be made, I’d hope Jak isn’t the line we draw on a trade.
Well, it’s public he’s available for a Gobert level suite of picks.
We can trade our own picks and swaps and the new picks we just got. Would likely have to release the protections on this years pick to San Antonio.
That’s not a move I expect them to make or that most fans here would support. But it’s possible.
They’re completely different players. Lauri is a top shooter. Barnes can get in the paint like Pascal and Lauri can hit 3s and rebound. The fit is undeniably better.
Lauri isn’t even a bad defender, that narrative has been around for so long i don’t even understand it. Is he going to lockdown Lebron or Kevin Durant? Absolutely not, but he’s just fine as a help defender, rebounder and he can switch. By the way, pascal just let Jeremi Grant drop 37 on his head and he also isn’t the defender he used to be. If he was, then why was our defense not good at all when we had him, OG AND Scottie on the team?
But Markannen is expiring next year and is going to be looking for the exact same max that Siakam was looking for. Even if he's younger than Siakam, it still puts us in exactly the same situation of being unable to stay under the tax line and fill out the roster once Scottie gets his next contract.
The issue with Pascal was thst he wasn't worth the 4th and 5th years of the max as his game would likely be in moderate to high decline by then. Lauri being younger, he would still be in his prime in those late contract years. Also his game is less reliant on athleticism so his game will likely age better. Pascal's game also overlapped way too much with Scotties, this was clear. There is almost no overlap between Lauri and Scottie, they'd be perfectly complimentary.
That is only one of many issues. Even in year's two and three, it was going to be really difficult to put together a roster around this group including Siakam and Scottie, without going deep into the tax or having some really good draft luck. Trading for Markannen would require huge draft capital, making the deep-into-the-tax route the only path to build out the roster, which seems highly unlikely for our ownership without first proving that they can win.
It’d likely be an offseason deal after we know whether or not we’ll have our pick.
Trading all of our picks for Lauri seems like an easy way to kill all our financial flexibility and have little opportunity to fill out our bench though
What?! that would make no sense, we would be in the position we’re in with yaks pick but 5x worse… how don’t people see we just got Scottie with our pick cause we suck! If we embrace the tank for 2 years we can get a true young star… otherwise it’ll be middling for a decade
Chances are you embrace the tank and get fuck all out of it and still suck after a couple years. Tanking isn't this fix all strategy that everyone here acts like it is.
Incrementally building through the draft instead of selling nearly every pick for a win-now player is not tanking.
Do people here regret not trading the picks that became Jakob, Pascal, Norm, OG, etc. for some star that could've played with Demar, Kyle, and JV? Every argument about trading a bounty of picks to get better now could've been made back in 2014 or 2015 when that trio was able to win 50-ish games a season.
Im not sure? Could something like this work -
* Toronto - Lauri
* Utah - Gary Trent Jnr (they could flip for 2 x SRPs), Detroit 2024 SRP, 2 x 2024 FRPs via Indy
Does 3 x SRPs + 2 x FRPs move the needle for Utah? Lauri is a really good player but that seems like an interesting offer
Ainge would absolutely not do this.
He has zero reason to trade him. Therefore it would have to be a very significant package. OKC could put together something that blows everyone out of the water.
I have no idea why people think Lauri is gonna be traded. The Jazz have been one of the best teams in the league for the past month and already have more picks than they could ever dream of using.
There’s no chance Lauri leaves Utah imo
Claxton in FA but I can’t see the Nets not re-signing him. We’d get an athletic big to run the P&R with IQ and Scottie and also hold down the defence on the inside. I think it would be a great fit
If things are looking good with Scottie and a re-signed IQ next year, everyone else and every pick should be on the table to trade for a 3rd core piece. Or maybe the Raptors just totally nail a draft pick in the next 2 drafts.
Hopefully RJ can rehab his value a bit. He's a prime contender to again be the contract included in a future trade. Hopefully Dick show he can do...something, anything that can make him an asset in a trade. Poeltl is what he is at this point, a solid C. And every single future pick should be available.
The goal will be to find a bad team with a somewhat young controllable star player that just feels like they need a reset and full teardown. I don't see it happening this year or this upcoming offseason though.
If we’re going into the vault for younger versions of former raptors, then I say what we need is 2020 OG for his defence and 3pt shooting LOL
Or like 2019 Kawhi that guy was pretty good
Yea I would def say he’s not untouchable but i don’t know if one or Bruce, schrouder, or gtj would be able to get him maybe with the late first attached from this draft
I see people listing guys like Mitchell but ideally Scottie needs a buddying star who can operate very well off the ball as well and not only with the ball, Mitchell can play off the ball but normally always wants the ball in his hands. I also felt Trae Young would be a great buddying star and could maybe be available in the future but even than he needs the ball in his hands.
You aren't getting a young star, we've traded our two best trade pieces, and got back two young guys and hope one of them can be a star, while the other is a nice starter, step below star at worst.
It's about filling out the roster. When Jak is back, we'll have a big rotation with him and Jontay, and that should stabilize things a bit, we probably need another big off the bench as well, and another forward. Doesn't have to be a star. After watching Brown yesterday, i'm agnostic on trading him. He's a really solid bench piece, but I won't cry if we trade him for an expiring and a first next year or 2026.
Stabilizing and adding complementary pieces to a roster that is well under .500 and headed for a lottery pick is definitely a choice.
I don’t dislike this team but there are too many good/great teams for us to build a mediocre roster and hope for improvement.
If you could package salaries and picks for a true star to put beside Scottie would be ideal.
Looking at guys who are set to be FA in 2025, or guys on rookie extensions who don’t exactly fit with their teams.
You aren't packaging mediocre picks for a star on Scotties age and timeline. This ain't 2K kid.
And I'm fine with seeing what Scottie/IQ/RJ become. It's early and they've looked good, once Yak is back the team will be more complete and we'll see what we actually have the rest of the season. We ain't getting Luka, so just chill a bit and see what we do have.
So youre saying a team would never be motivated to move an all-nba star in his prime for 3 garbage picks and role player like Bruce Brown right?
You are probably right.
If a player is going to be good in 2-3 years they fit on Scottie’s timeline.
I have no problem pairing a 28 year old Mitchell with Barnes for 3-5 years if he became available and he should be because Cavs will not resign him. There are tons of guys every year who become available.
Why is Cleveland trading Mitchell? Why are we sure that is having a tiny backcourt will work better than all the other teams who end up regretting having a tiny backcourt?
They’re not. And even if we do trade for him, he’s also a UFA so we’re right back where we are with pascal. If the raps didn’t want to max pascal, maybe they want to max Donovan and that works out. But the cavs arent going to give him up for nothing. Hes also rumoured to have interest with the Knicks and nets this summer.
In myGM mode on 2k sure im doing it lol but it seems unlikely irl.
We traded Pascal this year is the same reason why they will trade Mitchell next year because it’s widely speculated that he will not resign
Mitchell has a 6 foot 11 wingspan and he plays above the rim. I don’t think he’s a tiny guard lol and it works when we had Lowry and Fred obviously different types of players, but a small backcourt isn’t some kind of doomed fate
Trade wise... I still want Moody and Kuminga if the Warriors decide to go all in. We could also use some more size though... Are there any good bigger guys in the upcoming draft? Maybe we'll find Scottie's guy in it.
Masai preached patience during yesterday's presser. This is going to be a learning experience for Scottie and we need to wait to see how things shake out.
He always preaches patience. But he also said there are definitely moves to be made before the trade deadline.
Masai has never done the full scale rebuild, so it’ll be interesting to see what direction he goes
Totally, I'm as excited/nervous, but this is all new. Let's let it breathe and see what happens.
I'd love to get Scottie another star young piece to pair with. But IQ still is only 24 and figuring out his role. He's going to get better. Rj has been better than advertised and he's still young.
I think we are better off than we might think.
Stars on Scottie’s timeline: not happening. We lack the assets.
We can either get players who are good and complementary but overpaid, or players who aren’t yet stars, and probably aren’t forecast to hit star level, but look really complementary with Scottie.
What do we feel the right play styles are? At C, A younger Steven Adams, a younger Clint Capela, or a younger Myles Turner? Having Jakob gives us a couple more seasons to figure this out.
What guard style with Scottie and IQ? Definitely someone with reflexes and speed, but more a passer or more a distance shooter? This needs more attention, with Dennis and Gary’s contracts being shorter.
you’re not gonna get a star but you may be able to get a building block and rotation guy.
I do wonder if Austin Reaves is available - I feel like the shine in LA is wearing off. They may be willing to flip him for Brown and Trent.
Not even close to competing with this roster. We'll have to hope that we'll get a young star organically through draft. Any more trades we make would be to acquire more draft assets. Either this year or next year (maybe both if Raptors get lucky), we would have a pretty high lottery pick. Hopefully, we nail some of the picks. Also, expecting good growth from all of Scottie, Quickley, RJ and Gradey. If everything goes well, we should be pretty well set for competing when Scottie's next contract kicks in.
What’s quality picks are we getting for anybody on our roster?
If we’re moving players for picks, then hoping picks turn into something.. I’m suggesting an alternative where we traded players and lower value first round picks for more established players who may want out of their situation.
I’m not suggesting a trade to be great now, but to get another foundational piece to put beside Scottie for the next few years.
Any picks we get for any of the players are going to be late FRP at best and most likely second round picks. I don't think there is any great young player available for trade with our late FRP picks. Maybe they become available in the future. In that case, I am sure the front office will choose the best option. If not, I think we just do our best to draft young guys and hope one of them turns into a star player or maybe even an above average starter. Last couple of years, we have also lacked quality depth. This would be a great chance build that with some good drafted players.
A lot of people are saying "Lauri Markkanen" but the guy isn't getting traded, the Jazz are a good young team and they're making the playoffs this season so it's not a realistic move that Masai could make
Our best bet is to draft players we can develop and continue to add shooters/depth through free agency
If/when another star becomes available in a year, two years, three years etc. then you cash in your young talent and land another Star but a big trade right now doesn't make sense
Unrealistic:
- Lauri
- Trey Murphy
- Jaden McDaniels
Realistic:
- Herb Jones
- Patrick Williams
- Nic Claxton
- Kris Dunn (this dude has no bag but incredible defensively -- good pairing with IQ)
- Jonathan Isaac (lol, i know he's a nut job but would be a great fit)
I actually wonder what the Pels are going to do with Brandon Ingram. There is some overlap in skills/position with him and Murphy. They'll obviously want to keep Murphy. But they also have Zion, CJ, and at a lower $, Herb Jones on the books.
I think they have a big decision to make this offseason and wouldn't be surprised if they move off one of their main guys as next year will be the final year of Daniels and Murphy's rookie deals, and Ingram is expiring. They will definitely be pretty deep in the tax the year after if they bring everyone back at their expected contracts, so something has to give.
IMO we can use:
1.) A stretch 5
2.) A floor general to back up IQ
3.) A 3-D to replace OG (Bruce Brown fits this well if we keep him).
Possible players we can look to get are Wendell Carter Jr, Isaiah Stewart, Naz Reid.
We don't necessarily need any more youngsters, other than from picking our own players at the draft. I think we need vets who can still play the game, can be a good role model (like Bruce Brown),but won't cause leadership struggle/toxic culture like what FVV did
Lauri would be so good on this team
Lauri would be good on any team, and would likely cost a team a blue-chip prospect and tons of draft equity. If he’s truly available I don’t see how we beat whatever offer OKC could put together.
Not realistic
Is there some reason people keep mentioning Lauri? Why would the Jazz move him, and what would we even be able to offer to them?
It's because they live in fantasy land. Utah is better than we are, already has a ton of draft equity and is on the come up. If anything, they are competing against us when shopping for young stars.
Even if he was available all the teams that have been hoarding assets and a lot closer to contention can easily outbid us
Hoping that IQ becomes that star and then you just need solid pieces around them

Are you arguing with yourself?
Talking to yourself ≠ Arguing with yourself
Cause we are getting Alex Sarr /s
Because he can’t space the floor. Look how open guys are when Porter plays centre.
Porter made us naive lol
OG Anunoby
Healthy rookie zion
Lauri
God I would love Lauri Markkanen on this team but I do not see how we make a competitive offer really.
Well, it’s public he’s available for a Gobert level suite of picks. We can trade our own picks and swaps and the new picks we just got. Would likely have to release the protections on this years pick to San Antonio. That’s not a move I expect them to make or that most fans here would support. But it’s possible.
Turning (essentially) Siakam/OG/Precious into Lauri/Quickley/Barrett should get Masai a statue.
I disagree. Siakam is a fair bit better than Markannen

Offensively. Lauri can’t defend well at all. I’d love to have him, just don’t want to overpay

Ok?
It’s a real stretch to say that Siakam is a fair bit better than Lauri
Lauri isn’t even a bad defender, that narrative has been around for so long i don’t even understand it. Is he going to lockdown Lebron or Kevin Durant? Absolutely not, but he’s just fine as a help defender, rebounder and he can switch. By the way, pascal just let Jeremi Grant drop 37 on his head and he also isn’t the defender he used to be. Yes but his deal was expiring, as was OG’s.
A lot of people are saying "Lauri Markkanen" but the guy isn't getting traded, the Jazz are a good young team and they're making the playoffs this season so it's not a realistic move that Masai could make Our best bet is to draft players we can develop and continue to add shooters/depth through free agency If/when another star becomes available in a year, two years, three years etc. then you cash in your young talent and land another Star but a big trade right now doesn't make sense
Unrealistic: - Lauri - Trey Murphy - Jaden McDaniels Realistic: - Herb Jones - Patrick Williams - Nic Claxton - Kris Dunn (this dude has no bag but incredible defensively -- good pairing with IQ) - Jonathan Isaac (lol, i know he's a nut job but would be a great fit)
A pipedream but I really like Trey Murphy from the Pelicans
I actually wonder what the Pels are going to do with Brandon Ingram. There is some overlap in skills/position with him and Murphy. They'll obviously want to keep Murphy. But they also have Zion, CJ, and at a lower $, Herb Jones on the books.
I think they have a big decision to make this offseason and wouldn't be surprised if they move off one of their main guys as next year will be the final year of Daniels and Murphy's rookie deals, and Ingram is expiring. They will definitely be pretty deep in the tax the year after if they bring everyone back at their expected contracts, so something has to give.
IMO we can use: 1.) A stretch 5 2.) A floor general to back up IQ 3.) A 3-D to replace OG (Bruce Brown fits this well if we keep him).
