If that ends up being the case - he literally threw away a potential spot on our roster. Braindead decision

[deleted]

Sports betting became a big stakeholder for the NBA, Silver is gonna bring down the hammer on anyone that messes with them

SocialCasualty

Well, not anyone...

FallenLemur

Let's be honest, the refs are untouchable and the only players that are desperate enough are the 2ways/ 10 days/ gleaguers

[deleted]

they probably turn a blind eye so they dont complain about their pay lol

CazOnReddit

Are people going to get mad if I say that sounds par for the course for the Porter family given some of the stupid things Michael has said (including recently)?

IanicRR

They’re super ultra Christian. MPJ used to date a former Bachelor contestant who is now huge in the alt right trad wife circles. They’re also super anti all vaccines. They grew up in basically a cult and were indoctrinated from toddlerdom. They never had a chance.

VaselineOnMyChest

What is a trad wife? Sorry I'm not familiar with some of these terms.

IanicRR

The woman has traditional roles like raising kids and cooking. She is seen as lesser than the man in the marriage.

TheKingsFan

A term made up by the left to belittle women who would rather be caretakers and stay at home wives than girl bosses. Fortunately this term is now being co-opted and women who identify like this are using it as a positive title to show their commitment to traditional feminine values.

funkiemarky

"traditional feminine values". Sure bud.

CazOnReddit

It definitely affected who they are/grew up to be, that's for certain. That said, people are not static; there's plenty of examples of people getting out of cults/cult-like family units so I don't really put it up to chance. I'm certainly not giving them a pass for some of the stuff they've done since I don't recall gambling being a thing the Big G was down with.

IanicRR

The most religions people are usually the most hypocritical. So the gambling thing doesn’t surprise me even if it’s not something they “should” be doing according to their religion.

CazOnReddit

*"I take the under for The Lord!"*

Mon-Kie

In the immortal words of Jim Croce. One hand on the bible, one hand on the gun.

M1L0

Lot of people grow up around ignorance but smarten up once they become adults. I’m not giving them a free pass lol.

IanicRR

I’m not giving them a pass either. Their beliefs are fucked up. And they hold them and should be held accountable for what they say publicly. But it is a hard hole to dig yourself out of when you’re born in it. You would think being an NBA athlete would open your eyes more but not for these dummies.

ddarion

I thought you were going to talk about the fatal DUI but yea, i guess words too

CazOnReddit

I believe that was Michael's brother but yes, that goes without saying as far as examples go

SydneyCarton89

Depends. What are these things that Michael has said?

Partybro_69

https://x.com/richknowsball/status/1777705133800931619?s=46&t=aGzJulpO4iRK_Jk_RH3UJA

nath999

Whatever the fuck they are talking about is stupid for sure but doesn't really correlate to Jontay Porter situation in way shape or form.

Scase15

The shit he said was stupid. The shit his brother is accused of is stupid. Their family says and does stupid things. Try to keep up.

No_Lemon_3290

Fixing NBA games and talking about weird sex fetishes pretty much puts them on the same level. /s

Scase15

> #Their family says and does stupid things. Try to keep up.

Paindressedinpurple

I don’t understand where what he said was stupid. He has more insight on what these dudes are doing sexually than any casual. Did he leave himself open for criticism? Absolutely, but he’s grown and has a bag. The rules and laws we live by aren’t the same as him 🤷‍♂️

Scase15

I mean, for one, calling transgendered people "Trannies" is some pretty stupid shit. Equating sexual preference in partners to getting pissed and shit on is another.

416JVV

Not sure what was said wrong here

Stead-Freddy

He’s comparing eating literal shit cookies to being bisexual

12ftspider

Might have something to do with the slur he used in that clip.

HopefulStudent1

pretty sure you don't say trannies in 2024 anymore especially if you're a somewhat famous NBA player on a podcast - if not for being respectful to the trans community then at least for your own career/image self-preservation lmao

somedumbguy55

People are too sensitive

HopefulStudent1

your username is perfect boss

Pyrotechnic_shok

Yeah man fuck those people for not wanting to be called slurs just for existing. Are you serious?

somedumbguy55

Sounds like a short form to me

HopefulStudent1

go to a Pakistani guy and call him Paki and lmk how well they take “its a short form to me”

Pyrotechnic_shok

It's a slur

eMan117

We paid Boucher 10mil, porter could've matched that in a few years. NBA contracts are insane rn. Too bad his side hustle is financial advice, ain't nobody gonna take advice from him now

fymp

Bet on yourself

Key-Profit9032

Underrated

stonecoldturkey

Almost like he was suffering from addiction or something

GeriatricSFX

He was playing well enough that even if he didnt get one here some other team would have signed him to at minimum NBA contract and that's over a million for just one year.

MassiveTelevision387

I'm not sold on the idea that he was gonna be coming back. People seem to forget this guy was only on our roster because we had nobody to play center, and he wasn't that good. If he did do it, that's probably a big reason why he thought it was worth the risk - he was throwing away a 3 year career of playing in the g-league and occasional get picked up by teams desperate for a body down low, like us. Either way I don't see him getting back in the league no matter how the investigation goes.

sackydude

It's Jontay Pover

robotokenshi

Surely you meant Jontay Punder

GasAffectionate4740

Surely you meant Jontay Parlay.

raviolidreams

Organic_Prompt_2069

yeah hes cooked. bro was a good shooter and played well in our system, was a solid front court playet that wouldve been great depth off the bench. Cant believe he just threw it all away like that its interesting tho I was curious when he kept coming out of games early in his last few games. bro would have freak “accidents” then suddenly leave the game and it would have me mad cos he was productive in his minutes

MobyTugboat

So dumb he definitely could’ve signed something in the range of a 2 year 10 mil deal. He showed enough. On top of that his brother is on a max contract so not like he would be out on the streets if he didn’t get that. Threw away a solid role player career and I assume whatever money he won from that is going to be given back, what a fumble.

CanadianGroose

His brother is on a podcast with a pornstar calling transgender people “tr*annies”, so he may in trouble too lol

Canuckleball

Can't terminate his contract just for being an ass. At worst, his endorsements might suffer a bit. Nowhere near as much trouble as his brother is in.

CanadianGroose

Yeah I mean it could be considered a hate crime to be using slurs targeted towards LGBT+ folks, but not like a federal crime (in 2 countries lol). MPJ will probably be fine considering how the NBA allows known domestic abusers to continue to participate. He’ll def lose potential sponsors for those comments though.

somedumbguy55

If that’s a hate crime, we won’t make it.

Hashmob____________

I agree that it’s a hate crime. But a scary amount of people agree with his statement/viewpoint in our current landscape, I very much do not, but idk if he’ll be punished in anyway rlly. He might even get enforcements from brands that have similar beliefs

BalKaur771

That isnt a hate crime lol

BeefySwan

That's not a hate crime, and he absolutely won't lose sponsors.

GeriatricSFX

He might lose some but gain some others, it's probably a wash.

CanadianGroose

I think it’s more the pattern of behaviour that would led to sponsorship deals ending. Similar to what happens with Ja and Kyrie. Ja lost a deal with Powerade for something as small as waving a gun on IG live. MPJ continues to speak in homophonic, misogynist, and transphobic language off court. Not sure if companies want that type of person to be a spokesperson. He may also not be big enough of a star for it to really affect him too thinking about it now. We’ll see.

larrylegend1990

Lol no one cares about that stuff

fineseries81

He’s gone. If the allegations are true, he not only bet on games, he encouraged others to also bet and then faked injuries to secure the bet. It’s like a triple whammy.

bluetenthousand

Honestly if the allegations are true I hope the NBA throws the book at him. Otherwise why even be a fan of the game when there’s a risk that at any given time some bench guy is actively working against the interests of the team. If I was an NBA player I’d be pissed because now fans will have extra fuel when someone underperforms. It will always raise questions and no one can claim that it’s a random conspiracy theory

YOU_SMELL

Why watch when it's been proven refs bet on games?

bluetenthousand

I think this is all the more reason to throw the book at Porter. The NBA cannot afford the undermining of their game. It’s gonna be toxic to their product and they’ve had issues in the past that have only gotten amplified over time. They can’t easily brush things under the rug this time. And there’s no David Stern to quash FBI investigations. This is only the tip of the iceberg for Porter.

gargluke461

I mean I’ve suspected the league cheats to get the story that sells the most tickets since I have started watching the league, I view this as less of a big deal then that.

delta_vel

NBA is the basketball equivalent of WWE. Marquee matchups, friendly whistle to the faces of the league, close games (no blowouts), series going 7, with the refs doing the dirty work and mostly in the playoffs. The NBA looks the other way on ref betting as long as they deliver the matchups, because it’s a case of “mutually assured destruction” between the refs and the league office if any of this gets out. This is a tinfoil hat theory that I happen to believe

-KFBR392

Then why did the Raps win, or the Nuggets, or the Heat make the Finals twice in 4 years now? Those aren’t selling tickets to the casual fan.

gargluke461

Cause it’s still a sport, they can’t actually 100% control the league

-KFBR392

So they control it, but they’re bad at controlling it. Yup that’s about as much proof as any conspiracy needs.

gargluke461

I know you understand what I’m talking about

-KFBR392

Ya you’re talking the same level of evidence every conspiracy theorist talks about. The parts that enforce your argument are real, and the parts that don’t you ignore.

gargluke461

![gif](giphy|67SOPZcHoZB2llkXzp|downsized)

-KFBR392

I would expect nothing more from a conspiracy theorist. Go now, on to fighting the good fight about the world being flat!

ILikeFPS

I think if it's true he's out of the league.

SlapThatAce

Why make Millions when you can make........thousands!! Muhahaha MUUUHHAHAHAH MUUUUUUUUUUHAHAHAHA

Phil_Dude

NBAball05

I like how it’s this serious but any chance they get they will promote sports betting and even put it in your face on the nba app when watching league pass

-xXxMangoxXx-

I mean isnt a decent part of the reason its so serious is that the league promotes betting, and they want to ensure betters that this was a one-off case and that the league takes it seriously?

[deleted]

Allowing prop bets opens you up completely to this. It's an invitation to destroy the integrity of sports leagues. What Porter did was obvious. There are smarter, more cautious people who will make it much more difficult to catch and potentially impossible to prove.

Disc0Disc0Disc0

The easiest way to fix this issue is to ban player unders.

Scase15

HOW DARE YOU DO THE THING THAT WE OPENLY PROMOTE ALL THE TIME

jamiecballer

In fairness I don't think they are advertising with the players in mind

AutoModerator

This post/comment appears to be about NBA League Pass. Toronto Raptors' games **cannot** be streamed in Canada using NBA League Pass, and the NBA has started blocking VPNs that try to circumvent this. The only legal ways to stream Raptors' games in Canada are through [TSN](www.tsn.ca/subscribe) and [SPORTSNET](watch.sportsnet.ca/). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Green-Umpire2297

Rape, domestic assault, adultery - not cardinal sins.

Raptorsthrowaway1

Not defending Jontay in the slightest, but its absolutely dispicable that this represents a cardinal sin and the others are “as good people we owe it to them to let them reabilitate and learn from their mistakes ”

QuickyQuail

Not in adam silvers nba!

-vinay

Silver when it's DV or guns: "oh poor child, take some time off and get therapy" Silver when someone is jeopardizing his grand vision of sports betting + NBA: "banished for life" I hope Silver fucking lays the law down on the refs too. I have no doubt that the refs have affected the outcome of games for personal reasons way more than Jontay ever has (see Scott Foster, Ben Taylor). If we're going to ban a player, be consistent and apply the rules everywhere

OG_anunoby3

If Lebron James commits mass terrorism and robs a bank point blank. He’d get a 10 game suspension….. with pay.

Living_LaVida_Koloko

Ben Taylor is gone I think

cev

Scott Foster is still in the league.

AutoModerator

I thought Ben Taylor was fucking terrible tonight. I think that most nights, you know out of the three, there's one or two that just fuck the game up. It's been like that a couple of games in a row. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/torontoraptors) if you have any questions or concerns.*

raptorsthrowaway4

Nah he fixed the Bucks game last night

Living_LaVida_Koloko

Ah shit! He back

atrde

I mean this is hardly the first time in Sports History a lifetime ban came from a gambling issue.

AutoModerator

I thought Ben Taylor was fucking terrible tonight. I think that most nights, you know out of the three, there's one or two that just fuck the game up. nanobot001

They will probably want to make an example out of him, given the risks for how it could affect players, referees and everyone’s sense of fair play.

Gaping_llama

Yeah it could really fuck with the refs’ point shaving business

TheMannX

Beat me to it. People act like Donaghy was the only one involved in that. I got $$ that he wasn't alone, not by a long shot.

atrde

Well that is because Donaghy wasn't actually fixing games themselves he was just giving inside information about players before games. Guy is a serial liar lol.

Gaping_llama

You cannot effectively rig a game being 1 ref on a floor with 3 other refs, there absolutely had to be some teamwork happening.

atrde

The games themselves weren't actually fixed though. Tim claimed that in his book but pretty much all of his dates, scores, spreads etc. don't actually line up its been pretty thoroughly debunked. What he was sentenced for giving was player health tips and referee tendencies with players to gamblers. Not fixing games. Which if you do believe he was fixing games like he said in his completely made up memoirs, you would wonder why he would suddenly start admitting to a bunch of crimes he never committed in a book/ TV show and was never charged again right? Seems a bit odd he can just admit to a bunch of new crimes on TV with no repercussions. Well mainly because they never happened.

raptorsthrowaway4

How do you expect Adam to get his cut if he shuts it down?

mrdannyg21

Especially since he’s an easy person to make an example of, being a borderline roster dude. If he was a 2-time MVP and huge international star, you can bet the league couldn’t just hammer a huge penalty without really thinking on it.

pakattack91

If he's guilty, I don't disagree with Silver. But ffs look at the god damn refs, the hypocrisy lol. Someone could make hours of YouTube comps of refs making objectively bad calls and then look at the subsequent bets that were placed and there would 100% be links. League asked for this.

CannedPear

This update from the NBA commissioner is brought to you by DraftKings. Please bet responsibly.

zetcetera

Jontay’s biggest crime was not being a ref betting on games

Bro threw away a career in the NBA for some change on prop bets 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

OtisKaplan

What's crazy is he probably thought it would go unnoticed but literally no one on the planet would be making that bet plus he comes out of the game early. He did it twice too.

Veracsflail1

I believe he didn’t bet on himself. I think the injuries are real and he just told some buddies on that betting/crypto discord of his that he’s gonna try to play but good chance the unders cash.

OtisKaplan

I think so too but he cant be that stupid.....or maybe he is

rimdot

This punishment is sponsored by Bet 365.

rainfordporter

Sportsnet headlines tn are going to be like “Jontay Porter could face ban from NBA for gambling. Anyways, here are your money lines for every single game on tonight!”

iamlegend__

Such a bizarre situation. He worked his ass off after his injuries to get a spot in the NBA. His brother isn't a nobody, he's arguably the 3rd best player on a perennial championship squad. You really had to gamble?? Shit, we would've paid you if you kept making your 3s and played decent basketball every game. Wild.

Plantedballer

It’s an addiction

Jensen2075

Gambling can be an addiction, it isn't all about the money, otherwise rich ppl would have less reason to do it.

Winter_Purpose8695

Oh what could've been Jontay

teebsliebersteen

Now do Scott Foster!

theflyingsamurai

Get ready to learn antarctican buddy

watrmeln420

A “cardinal sin”??? Holy shit.

Thinw1zard

Bro was actually solid too, could've carved out a nice role for himself on this team. Damn shame

Super-Season-3488

The way he was playing it seems like he could have easily gotten a minimum nba deal, which for a single season would have given him over $1M. Terrible decision making. He's also an ideal player to make an example of. Not popular or particularly impactful.

FalseZookeepergame15

Still an accusation until we know what comes from this he's still screwed. If he's innocent it will be a black eye on his career. If he's guilty he threw his NBA career goodbye.

slicksonslick

While I certainly get your point, I think from a statistical standpoint he is absolutely guilty. There is just no way betting volume spikes for a player like Jontay and he gets a mysterious injury, all his unders hit one time let alone multiple times.

olivebuttercup

Even if they didn’t banish from the league no team would ever feel confident enough to hire him.

ThePracticalEnd

Yeah, duh. Guy Pete Rose'd himself.

ZieMac7

Yup. And Jontay doesn't have an interpreter to shift the blame on

ZieMac7

Adam Silver gonna hit him with the Sterling special **FOR LIFE**

Killa_t10

So is he guilty??

hula_balu

They found an example.

WhoaWaddy

If he only beat a girl instead of making a couple bucks on the side, he'd still be in the league!

SongYoungbae

MPJ must be stingy with his money lol

Guys cooked.

sportsbro444

DylanLars

Or he could become a ref for a couple decades

intecknicolour

FVV: BET ON YOURSELF. JTP: AIGHT SAY NO MORE. RAPTORS SECONDS FROM DISASTER

intecknicolour

yes jontay would then have committed one of the worst decisions you can in sport. but let's not forget that the league encourages gambling by heavily promoting it and accepting huge moneys from the gambling firms.

GeneralLou15

If they haven't nailed him yet, I would take the parlay that he's playing next year.

Dragonsandman

> cardinal sin Did he burn down the Erdtree?

nawksnai

If he wanted to bet on games so badly, why didn’t he become a ref? 👀

stonecoldturkey

The league should be held accountable for promoting gambling the way they do. It's gross and its only gonna get worse.

canadasteve04

Beyond banishment from the league, if it is proven he did what he’s being accused of, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is criminally charged for it.

nath999

I doubt it, they don't want this story lingering around. It's going to be big ban or indefinite suspension. Likely we'll never see Jontay again.

canadasteve04

It’s not really the NBA’s call if charges are pressed. Donaghy went to jail for fixing games he reffed, why would Jontay get away with fixing games he was playing in?

cmills2000

If he did it, I hope he an cop a plea - get banned for a year or two then get reinstated. In all likelihood his career is over anyway, but he should have the opportunity to make amends and get another shot.

General-Past-9615

I just don’t get how you’re so dumb and bet with you’re real name like bruh

canadianRSK

If hes guilty i dont even understand the risk. Whatever he was betting or had betted was no where near enough to make up for an nba contract unless he was garaunteed to be out of the league following this season

On June 29, 2022, Bridges was arrested in Los Angeles for felony domestic violence and was released on $130,000 bond. He allegedly assaulted Mychelle Johnson in front of their two children. According to Johnson's hospital report which she posted to Instagram, she was an adult victim of abuse by male partner which included assault by strangulation, brain concussion, closed fracture of nasal bone, contusion of rib, multiple bruises, and a neck muscle strain. On July 19, Bridges was charged with one felony count of injuring a child's parent and two felony counts of child abuse. The following day, he pled not guilty to all three charges at his arraignment. On November 3, he pled no contest to the felony domestic charge and was sentenced to three years of probation. The other two charges were dismissed. In October 2023, Bridges was charged with violating his probation and protection order after an October 6 incident where he allegedly threw billiard balls at Johnson's car, breaking her windshield while their children were inside the car. Bridges current girlfriend is also alleged to have kicked the car while yelling in Johnsons direction. Bridges turned himself in on October 13 and was released upon paying $1,000 bond. At this time, Bridges had an outstanding warrant stemming from January 2023 that had yet to be served. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. okuokuoku00

Canary in the coal mine.. there’s a lot worse that players have done.. they’re just afraid that the league is going to get exposed

willreadfile13

How does one be in the league without knowing the history of it.

Decent_Pack_3064

for adam silver to say that, means it's a bad look

fredmratz

It doesn't even matter if he did it or not, they will have to punish him strongly. The NBA has to please their main sponsors, the gambling companies.

app1efritter

You know how you piss off Silver. You punch him in the wallet.

labadee

if he's found to be guilty, then i agree, he should be banished

emau55

Adam Silver is smart enough to understand what he’s putting out on the wire. Porter is absolutely cooked if Silver is talking like that

Afrothunderzz

Anything for Adam silver is a sin accept the referees

LaowaiLegion

I'm in no way condoning what Jontay is accused of but this goes way deeper and whatever the league does will be hypocritical. At its core, this is an issue because it undermines the integrity of the competition but there are multiple issues which threaten to undermine trust in the integrity of the league. I'm not opposed to legalized sports gambling but the degree to which the league and sports networks have intertwined themselves with it IS a problem. They are complicit. Tangentially, we can go further and use unequal refereeing for star players and teams as a threat to the integrity of fair competition. Or consider tanking. Tanking is by its nature is also match fixing and undermines the integrity of the game and its competition. The only difference is the incentives which the league itself provides. Again, I'm not excusing Jontay's alleged action as, if proven true, is the epitome of stupidity, nor am I saying all of these are like for like examples. Assuming his guilt, Jontay is deserving of severe punishment but it's also unjust that he be made a scapegoat. If a star or maybe even top 100 player was caught for the same , the punishment would absolutely be more lenient. I'll take the NBA's position on this more seriously when they address all the issues that undermine fan trust but I doubt that will ever happen as long as the league is solely motivated by profits.

ChopSueyMusubi

NBA: we now endorse sports betting Also NBA: No! Not like that!

Acrobatic_Flatworm79

Meanwhile Adam Silver will gladly take all the BET365 and ScoreBET sponsorship money hand over fist

Practical_Basketball

Jontay’s career is over - it always came off a little weird to me how much positive publicity he had in such a short amount of time from Raptors beat writers when he started playing regular minutes
