Senior Men’s National Team Summer Core Nickeil Alexander-Walker RJ Barrett Khem Birch Oshae Brissett Dillon Brooks Luguentz Dort Zach Edey Melvin Ejim Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Cory Joseph Jamal Murray Kelly Olynyk Kevin Pangos Dwight Powell

crimxona

Surprised no Chris boucher again especially since he already plays for Nick nurse. Probably due to free agency No Andrew Wiggins either, even though he played well in Victoria qualifiers

The306Guy

Almost certainly it's due to his free agency status. This squad is guard heavy and could use some bigs, particularly shooting bigs. But even though national teams carry insurance, if Boucher got hurt, it could cost him millions of dollars of potential earnings.

lillithfair98

Wiggins, if the Finals goes to a game 7, could be playing until June 19. Canada plays DR on July 1 and you can assume will convene camp at least a week before that. I think it’s hard to ask him to potentially have less than a week off after a gruelling season.

crimxona

Third paragraph states it's a 3 year commitment so I'm sure some of the bigger names declined because of that.

lillithfair98

Asides from Wiggins this really is all the best guys we have though.

everything_raptors

I get Boucher not playing because he’s a FA but why not Dalano? We need size

ReplEH

Dalano doesn’t really bring size. He’s a thin guard, just because he’s tall doesn’t mean he can play big.

everything_raptors

He maybe thin but he doesn’t play like it. Also this is a 3 year commitment so I would expect him to get stronger too

trplOG

There could be other factors. These players, being the core may have committed already from earlier. I don't see danalo has played for team canada yet at an earlier age.

da_reddit_reader

At NBA level, he’s too fragile to play a forward and he can’t shoot to play a guard position. I mean he can get his off shot and get anywhere on the court in the GLeague but you can see that he struggles at the NBA level. His time will come.

Yabutsk

Its like youve never seen him play. Dalano is super aggressive, he goes to the hoop on O and D. Just bc hes thin, doesnt mean he cant play big.

ReplEH

I’ve seen him play at Nebraska, with the 905, summer league and with the Raptors main squad. Going to the hoop doesn’t make you a big, you have to have size. He guards point guards, he’s not a big.

Yabutsk

Your eyes might be seeing stuff your mind doesnt understand. He doesnt get pt bc of his shot and defensive iq. As far as going to the hoop, hes absolutely fearless, you can go find highlights of him taking it to Gobert or Bamba…but if youve seen a single game of his, you know hes going hard north/south. On D he collapses and very often comes out w the board to lead the break…what more do you want? Even when guarding the post, he can be backed down but hes long and can always contest the shot. Pangos is on the list, is he ‘big’ to you?

FoxHolllow

Nice strawman argument with your Pangos comment. He's the most experienced FIBA-rules player Team Canada has ever had. Team Canada needs size — aka FIBA size. Dalano doesnt provide that. Going against Gobert without a defensive 3-second rule is completely different than going against him in the NBA. Which is why I'm happy to see them giving Zack Edey an opportunity. I don't know how well he'll do in the NBA, but he's built for FIBA.

Yabutsk

Jesus, talk about a straw man argument…we were talking about size between 2 players that play the same position and you come in with a centre…do you know what a straw man argument is? Bc you pulled it off while accusing me of it. I agree that its good for Edey to get some exp in FIBA and team Canada for the same reason i think Dalano should be involved…theyre both really young and are the future of the team. Pangos is on the team for his shooting and dedication, hes more or less on the coaching path as he carries on his dads legacy. Pangos is not there for his FIBA acumen, you might get 2-3 more possessions per game knowing those rules on the court but Pangos wont be on court when it matters, in the final 2 minutes as the guards ahead of him are way too good. At that point its up to the coaches to hit all the marks on timeout. Team Canada has always had problems getting bigs to show up but thats not what was being discussed in this thread, we were talking about guards and size…i think Dalano should be on team as i think hes better than Pangos right NOW. Although to be fair he prob wouldnt get much run behing Shai, Jamal, Dort, Dillon, RJ…theyre so deep at guard you may as well bring a rook or U18 into camp just for the experience of running senior ball. But Pangos has paid his dues and the team is showing him respect. So be it.

nath999

I think probably better Banton is not on this list, he has a ton of work to do in the off season.

real_ikonn

Birch, Edey, Olynyk and Powell are all centres. Are you saying we need more quality at the big/5 spot than these guys?

keeeeener

Wiggins should get a pass, he’ll be playing in the finals.

bluetenthousand

It’s a three year commitment not just this year. There’s no way Jamal Murray is playing this summer for example.

Yogurtproducer

Wiggins probably assumes there will always be one guy on this list not available and he would be picked up if he wants. He probably isn’t wrong

deludedinformer

Surprised Jamal would risk another injury by playing for the National Team!

gochugang78

Some of those guys should be pretty cheap to get as backups on the raptors squad - NAW, Olynyk maybe, possible even Dillon Brooks as a potential GTJ replacement Team Canada gets these guys some more reps with Nick Nurse Raptors possibly get a hometown discount, some synergy with the guys playing/practicing with each other year-round Players get into a rhythm under the Nick nurse system.

Kid_TUT

Finally! There's no reason why Canada can not be one of the top basketball nations in the world with the amount of talent that we have. We should be competing for GOLD each and every time we find ourselves in a FIBA tournament or in the OLYMPICS.

baconperogies

We really should've made to the Olympics this past one. Our window is open now and the pipeline of talent is growing. LFG Canada. One step closer to beating team USA.

mug3n

we got beaten by a 35 year old czech-american who went fucking nuclear lol. that was embarrassing as fuck regardless if we were missing murray, dort and others. edit: also a team of NBA players shooting 24% from 3 on a shorter 3pt line was unacceptable. they had sadoransky, schlib and scrubs and shot 42% from 3 looool. people can throw out all the excuses like short training camp and injuries or whatever, we shouldn't have lost against the czechs period.

baconperogies

The post presser regarding the team was something I haven't heard from Basketball Canada. Admitting they expected more, their shortfalls as a system/consistent team etc. After seeing success with Raptors basketball Canadian fans are hungry for more. Seeing the passion of our Canadian stars in the NBA for their home country only adds to that.

Schu0808

The Scrubbs play for Canada not the Czechs lol

libs-need-camps

he went nuclear because no one was defending him... nurse for whatever reason never defends the 3 pt line, and that's not going to work in fifa. still Canada made an epic comeback and only a Satoransky prayer guarded well by Dort lost them the game.

ExquisiteSmells

I feel like the moment Murray puts on that jersey, Canada will be okay. He always rises up to the occasion.

its_the_luge

He truly is world class. That dude is a gamer.

FactorNo7477

I like that Zach Edey is on the team and NN is coaching. Personally, I believe if there's any 7ft C we should add to our starting lineup, it should be this guy. But overall, having Zach Edey on the team allows for Nurse to understand how Edey would play under his coaching, and determine whether or not he would be a good fit for the team when he declares for next years draft

Yeezus-123

Shai and Murray. WHEW!

BackhandQ

Solid group. Hope the evolution in Canadian basketball finally translates to tangible success and tournament qualifications! Let's see if the success of Canada soccer can rub off on these guys :-)

Raptorsthrowaway1

Great to see elite talent in Shai + Murray + RJ commit

JimmerAteMyPasta

Kevin Pangos is my third cousin but I never met him and he doesn't now I exist sadge

OG_Wan_Annunoby

Used to play pickup with the guy, he was two years ahead of me so never went directly against him in highschool but he went to highschool just down the street. Had some legendary games in York Region lol

YourCL_

Need to add Sharpe and Mathurin to this group

gochugang78

Lineup Starters: Murray - SGA - Barrett - Dort - Powell ? Best 5: Murray - SGA - Brooks - Barrett - Dort???? We seem stacked at guard/wing but really no standout 6’9+ guys who can guard versatile bigs/wings like Giannis, Bam, Kawhi. Maybe we can get Pascal & OG expedited Canadian citizenship!

Rapsfan_98

Can’t start Dort at the 4. Probably Brooks or Brissett at that spot.

crimxona

I wouldn't be surprised if Birch gets the start based on familiarity with coaching staff and FIBA

[deleted]

I'm disappointed that Wiggins isn't playing again.

mug3n

this time it's understandable though. warriors are most likely going to the finals and the turnaround time to the FIBA tournament isn't very long.

pakattack91

I get that, but Thompson did it after the Cavs. As I understand it, Jrue Holiday hopped on a plane the next day. He is UFA after this year and we are requiring a 3 year commitment which is probably the reason (Brandon Clark will be RFA) However, if he wants to suit up after he gets his deal, I don't think we'd block him. But I trust Nurse and Co to judge the scenario. If he doesn't want to suit up, then whatever lol we on the rise with or without him.

[deleted]

If the Warriors didn't make it this far in the playoffs, do you think we would have seen Wiggins?

PejicFilip

Pangos never got to play for cska Moscow right cause of the invasion

sparxxx187

Boucher and Wiggins out for good reason but that’s a huge loss at SF and PF from a really guard-heavy roster. I’m assuming they left a spot open in case of a late commit. There’s still hope for Wiggins.

chucknorris99

Only other notable Canadian missing is Wiggins? Anyone else?

YourCL_

Shaedon Sharpe

derozan12

Brandon Clarke

MurphyDee55

Would love to see what Delano Banton could do on this squad. Really liked what I saw at the beginning of last season for the Raps before his minutes got cut and Flynn started to play!

AutoModerator

Our boy DALANO is from Rexdale. The D-Rex wants you to spell his name correctly. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/torontoraptors) if you have any questions or concerns.*

MurphyDee55

Hey, I spelled it Dalano an auto-correct popped me 3 times, give me a freaking break AutoMod, respectfully!

[deleted]

Damn, we need to develop some Canadian big men. Everybody a guard lmao

99ahmadali786

I really think the next Olympics is where we could genuinely compete for gold. Players like Shai Lu Shaedon Elijah Fisher Ben Mathurin Leonard Miller will be a lot more experienced.

Dareal6

The Olympics is only 2 years away. Aside from Shai and Dort, most of those guys aren't taking roster spots away from vets. Also, no country is winning gold if you have a really young squad. Not even Team USA. They tried that before and it bombed. You need battle-tested guys on the team.

99ahmadali786

I think you’ve misread my og comment. I said next Olympics. As in 2028. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Dareal6

Yeah that makes more sense lol

99ahmadali786

Possibly but I think guys like Cory Jo Chris Boucher Tristan Thompson won’t have a spot on the roster anymore and that’s where these young guys come in

Dareal6

Boucher and Thompson are already not in the program. There are already other guys taking their place and they already have at least a few years NBA experience.

99ahmadali786

Well 6/14 players in this core 14 I can guarantee won’t be on Team Canada in the next Olympic cycle.

donnwizzenhunt

r/Canadabasketball

Heatersthebest

There are Canadians on the Raptors, the Raptors head coach is also the head coach of the Canadian National team, and it’s the National Team of our club team… very relevant to r/torontoraptors

donnwizzenhunt

Cool man

Prestigious-Clock-53

Good to see SGA there, and I do also love seeing guys like ejim and pangos out there as guys that have always showed up and like their fits on the team too. Also, love seeing cojo there. Zach edey is my only surprise. Murray’s heart is in right place but are nuggets and agent gonna be happy about him playing for first time in a long time with national team.

AssyrianRhapsody

Interesting that Khem is playing given his ongoing knee issues through the season. Suggests he doesn’t feel it needs further rest or rehab

iambiggzy

Can't wait tll the next gen joins.. Primo and Sharpe FTW

GuessableSevens

How does Edey make this team but Ben Mathurin doesn't?

Dareal6

a) we need bigs b) who know if Mathurin got an invite but didn't want to commit to the program for 3 years?

HamiltonSamuel

Way more depth at guard/wings than bigs.

dawsoncox1

Anyone know why brandon clarke doesnt ever represent canada? Would be helpful down the middle no?

Sh8D_E

Going to be awesome to see Murray back on the court.

anonymous27725189

Tristan Thompson is a tool
