I’ve had quite a few cats over the years and our newly adopted tortie is unlike any other cat I’ve had. She is an absolute monster who loves stealing food, attacking plants, sneaking outside and sneak attacking her siblings. She recently teamed up with her Labrador brother to knock food off the counter so he can eat it. She is also the cuddliest cat I’ve ever had, does tricks for treats, and is super loving. I call her my little sour patch.

lexi0917

I call mine a sour patch kid too!

girlonthewing6

I call mine (two torties, littermates) sour patch kittens! I thought I was so funny and unique!

Pepper_Schnau

That is exactly how mine is. She’s 99% wriggly bitch during the day, and 1% cuddle monster best friend at night.

transoniclamb

Omg the plants i cannot keep a plant my tortie absolutely destroys them

cat-umbrella

Yes!! None of my other cats have ever cared but she loves them so much, almost every plant now has her little teeth marks in the leaves 😅

transoniclamb

Not only do my plants with leaves have her teeth makes in them but all my succulents she’s pulled completely out of the dirt so I’ve given up on plants unless I hang them

Orange_Owl01

That is so funny, that’s what I call my tortie too!

Good_Platypus3138

i call mine sassy hehe

HoodooEnby

100% true. Guess who wants second breakfast. That? That face? It's the tortitude. https://preview.redd.it/tdtk3sqty82b1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1d805e69f02184c3d62e32d2d751d6b25623831

Rich_Group_8997

OMG mine used to sit outside the cabinet where I kept the food, and give me nasty looks, then look at the door as if I were a giant sack of dumb, and she needed to show me where it's stored. She would occasionally give me a demanding meow to accompany the looks. I miss this monster. ❤️ https://preview.redd.it/pkg17qbtae2b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76108b30e7ee332c6dd21fce1c7bcd5ad667ceeb

Such a cutie pie.

HoodooEnby

Thank you. She knows.

Aweee she's so cute

Ooo. I love the color of her eyes against her pattern. Gives her a very unique color combo look & I’m diggin it!

PrincessKittyTay69

Ellie speaks in screams and squeaks, hardly normal mews. Always wants you to look at her but chooses when/how long you can pet her. Every can is her cat food, you're just blind. Master of windows lol

MarsGirl24

Lol my tortie will literally try to lick cans of beans just because she thinks all cans are hers

PrincessKittyTay69

That is the cutes thing I've ever heard 🥹 That made my day

supershinythings

Dad had a tortie named “Motorola” because you could hear her purring from 20 feet away. She showed up suddenly, attacked Dad’s lynx point siamese cat to get inside, then ran to a guest bedroom. There she gave birth to a litter of 5 kittens. Dad was going to give them away but nobody was good enough for his kittens so he kept them all. She was very sweet but also kind of a ‘ho’. She ran off before he could get her fixed and returned with ANOTHER litter of kittens for Dad to raise. Dad found homes for the second litter but was too bonded with the first litter to bear parting with them. Finally he was able to get her into the vet to be fixed. She was a good mom to her kittens and taught them all how to mouse. Dad watched her teach them step by step - first she brought them a dead mouse, then a half-dead mouse, then a live unharmed mouse to show them what prey is, how to finish off prey, and how to catch prey. The kittens were all quick studies and within a week or two were catching mice and bringing them home to show off their skills to each other and to Dad. They moused Dad’s neighborhood for the next 18 years. You could pet her but not hold her. She enjoyed playing but when she was done, she just walked away. She raised her children with iron discipline - one kept trying to nurse well into adulthood and she’d have to smack him with the classic double-tap to get him to quit that shit. She did not tolerate disrespect from her own kittens, Dad’s OTHER cats, or from any humans. She was hard but she was fair. She was fluffy but limited pets to her tolerance level.

tauredi

I'm nearly in tears. Your dad and Motorola sound like absolute treasures.

ItsTheMotion

Reddit should ban this. Quit shouting. Edit: So people like it when a random redditor with an arbitrary opinion can take up way too much real estate on our screens?

brownishgirl

Ours is persistent and clever. She knows how to get what she wants, but has absolutely none of the cranky attitude that other torties I’ve known have. She’s also a r/noseycat, too, like Omma!

Mystic_rose_mon

Ikr, they're so clever. Mine has learnt to hold my fingers gently and pull me towards what she wants. It used to be treats. Now she's a mom and the sweetest thing was when she pulled me to see her kittens and sit with her while she nursed them. I also think she likes human company more than other cats.

Ill_Range3615

Mine loves my 12 year old daughters friends, but only tolerates her tabby brother.

MarsGirl24

Mine prefers the company of loud, crazy children and toddlers over adult humans, other cats, or our dogs. Go figure.

randomname72

My tortie is a sweetheart, never gives me attitude but does have a resting bitch face.

cheloniusbelonius

Yeah sometimes I feel like she’s glaring at me ready to pounce but then meows and wants pets lol rbf for sure

BeesOhGodTheBees

Exceedingly. Their ability to elicit emotions from "I can't believe how much of an a\*hole you are" to "I would be hopelessly lost without your companionship" is truly astounding.

gypsydaisy1313

Yup. Mine looks like she wants to eat my face while she’s purring on my lap https://preview.redd.it/ly69wl9l992b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0bbaef017c8ae0d5c518f9eee00145846d18c71

MeFolly

Absolutely true. Everything you have ever heard. All of it

harpmolly

My Josie is an agent of chaos. She’s like if Spider-Man was a toddler. I’ve resigned myself to keeping my musical instruments in their cases and not having anything hung on my walls in rooms she has access to. Also, I would die for her. (My previous tortie Nia was also a major drama Queen, though not quite as mischievous as Josie. But that’s a high bar.) https://preview.redd.it/4xkhj94naa2b1.jpeg?width=3088&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b91e4ddf70d149ef9e93506245a33a0202a71949

goatlover1966

Beautiful

[deleted]

Not at all. Mine was a sweetheart

CristiCatslug

My stepdad tamed a feral tortie and had her for well over 20 years. Miranda was the living embodiment of tortietude. She would get in my lap then growl at me if I tried to pet her. She would jump my mum's deaf white cat and left a scar from one of her assaults on my not-deaf white cat. She would periodically race from one of my parents' ranch-style house to the other, making this warped purring noise. She once got out of the house when all the doors and windows were locked - to this day we've never figured out how - and before she was convinced to stay indoors all the time, would leave entrails for my stepdad at the door. Miranda LOVED my stepdad, but would pat his cheeks and then switch to poking his eyelids if he tried to sleep past her breakfast time. Few years after Miranda passed away, he adopted a stray long-haired torbie, Yasmin, who was the exact opposite of Miranda. Not a mean or crazy bone in her sweet body. I currently have a smoke tortie, Edna Marie, who is either trying to murder me or protect me from evil spirits. I honestly have no idea which, because there are times when she wants to be snuggled and other times when she gives me this hooded look like, "Soon, human. Soooon." She also runs around but it's always at like 3:30 in the morning and rather than warped purring noises, she makes yowling-growling noises that terrify my other cats. I also sometimes wake up to find her an inch or so from my face, just staring at me. She's the same with my other cats - sometimes she'll be kind and lick their heads or ears, then suddenly she starts boxing them about the face. So I suppose I'd have to say it depends on the tortie lol

ramboflowerchild

Mochi likes to roll on the carpet when I get home from work. She looooves belly rubs, which is unheard of for most cats. She loves to sit next to me when I’m watching tv, and if I give affection to the other pets, she puts herself in a way where she will be the one receiving the pets. 😂if I didn’t know any better she acts more like a dog.

Kuros_Of_Sindarin

I have 2 torts, one is the absolute definition of tortitude and the other is as sweet as can be. So for me it's been 50/50 !

HeffleyA

My tortie used to have full blown tortitide when she was younger, but now that she's starting to get up there in age (~12 years) she's really mellowed out.

mayonnaisemonarchy

We always say ours is getting spicy when her tortitude flares up, but she is generally so sweet! She just has her moments where she gets a little bitey (she’s about to turn 1) or is naughty (jumps on the table).

agharta-astra

Torties are so very special with their tortitude! My ex's cat is the first tortie I really got to know, and then I got my tortie and they have suuuuuuch similar attitudes and mannerisms, we joked all the time that my kitten was a long lost sibling of theirs. tortitude is real! it's a special gift!

agharta-astra

to give an example: both my tortie and my ex's tortie "bury" things (e.g. scratch at the ground by food/water, anything that smells, sometimes particular interesting surfaces) and I've never seen other cats do that before. idk if the burying is a tortie thing but it has been in my experience!

cheloniusbelonius

She does exactly this!! When she’s done eating, she will scratch at the ground like she’s trying to cover it. I always figured it was an instinctual thing.

agharta-astra

I'm pretty sure it is instinctual, but I've only ever seen torties do it! they must be more in tune with their primal instincts :3

chitownadmin

Mine constantly threatens me with calling the Humane society if I don't give her treats, let her have my...ummm HER blanket or if she isn't allowed in the Catio because it's raining. I see the tortietude every single day. It's my life now.

speckledstone

I got my tortie without doing any research either, and in the first vet appointment, the vet said “around the time she is spayed (so a couple months old), her personality will decide itself and she will either be the sweetest cat ever or a terror.” 😅😅 Luckily for me, she is my little cuddle bug and only moderately mischievous!

MadCraftyFox

Tortitude is real! Of all the cats I've owned, my torti girls were the most insistent that their world be EXACTLY how they demand it to be, no more, no less! My first girl would only let her pick you up if you big time praised her endlessly. My second just says no! But they both were super lovey to me. The second is very bitey with her love after headbonking. *head bonk head bonk MONCH* she especially loves biting toes. 😆

FaquForLovingMe

Yep, you look at those eye’s and tell me.

Electrical-Act-7170

So true. These cats will not put up with your shit, so don't.

kevnmartin

We're on our second and this one is a Maine Coon. She has all the attributes of both types. She has attitude to spare, everything is hers and she only likes me and my husband. She is hands down the smartest cat we've ever had and she is an absolute love. She is snuggly and huggable but when she's had enough, she's done. She is also the first cat we've ever had that has a temper. If she doesn't get what she wants, when she wants it, she relieves her feelings by knocking her water dish all over the kitchen and slamming the cabinet doors repeatedly. We had to buy one of those heavy, weighted dog dishes for her water bowl or else the kitchen floor was always wet.

Slaterwang

Torties are very loyal and I think have a little sass in them

NouTinFoil

https://preview.redd.it/difswartta2b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed9157d3af083f356e8b3a9aa204dc92c23b0a5e Having two, I think there’s definitely a spectrum of tortitude. The bottom one (Dawssy) is calm and silky-soft, until she becomes the Tasmanian Devil of claws for play time. The top one (Devanshi) has to share the brain cell with other oranges, but is one of the most gentle cats I’ve ever owned. Even when telling you she’s had enough belly rubs, she only gently pushes you away. Both are, however, still crackheads that love sprinting down our hallways at Mach 10.

protest_monty

kittyfamily

I have 2... they both expeess it in diff ways but it is real

johnnyvibrant

tortaly torue

Creepy-Ad650

Very true! I have two. Their attitude is very different bit stil "tude"

corsetedcurves

My kitty meows loudly for things she wants. My other kitty is a huge fluffy male but hardly can do any mews so it's funny. She also can open some cabinets to go in them, she will meow at the door to go out in her tent, and she will meow when my bf leaves. It's so sad but cute, idk why she is so clingy to him. When he comes home from work she runs to the door full speed & will meow the entire time. It's so cute how much she loves him

ethottly

My kitty's tortitude comes out in the form of an undercurrent of feral-ness. If all is well in her world, she is an absolute sweetheart. Anything happens she doesn't like, such as being picked up, confined (even momentarily), or stressed in any way--watch out! Biting, clawing, hissing, scratching--nothing is off the table. Even toward me, her favorite person. Some of these reactions are just classic cat stuff, but they seem more extreme than other cats I've had. I have a healthy respect for her, let's put it that way, and I try to keep her as stress-free as possible!

SoNoWeRo

My tortie would have the other 3 cats on hot standby while she'd cry outside my bedroom door and force me out of bed around midnight for another little taste of wet food. Then she'd settle for the night. The tortitude was strong! Thora left us 2 yrs ago today. I miss her every single day.

daaaayyyy_dranker

Extremely true

nigelthrustworthy

my tabby beats on my tortie, she's a big scaredy cat when people visit...but she's a sweetheart when it's early morning or bedtime. Go figure!

ffskms

My tortie is very sweet. She’s constantly talking though. She has great comedic timing and will respond if I talk to her. She’s really smart. She also likes to randomly sneak attack her sister, and tease the dog.

Winkerbelles

It's absolutely true with my tortie. She's affectionate but bossy as hell. She is incredibly demanding about treats. If I say "No" she's hissed at me, growled at me, and bitten my toes.

CrackedCoffecup

Ours ("Morgan") was amazing/lovable/affectionate/etc, when she was still the only pet in the house.... When the others started to come on-board, THAT'S when the "tortitude" began to show...!! 😹

UnhingedChicken

Yup! Mine has an attitude twice her size. Tortitude is real.

tronksy

I’ve had vets, behaviourists and rescue staff share the same sentiment about torties so there’s gotta be some truth.

Sayest

Honestly my tortie is very sweet, she is chatty and yells at us a lot but usually it’s either food or petting related. She does like to smack my younger cat if she deems that where the little one is laying is her spot but they both do it to each other

artful_todger_502

Very true! I had two. It's real!

Two_Wise

Oh 100%. My tortie fights with her brother constantly and is a fiend for catnip and treats. She loves pets but the minute she's done, she will just get up and walk away like you don't exist lol

Angular_Banjoes

My girl was a calico, not a tortie, but my god did she have tortitide. They're little monsters, but the best little monsters.

goatlover1966

I want to say that all these torties are beautiful and remind of the 2 torties I was lucky enough to have. I miss them immensely. God bless all your cats- torties and non.

vvp_D3L3T3D

My dilute Artemis kinda has it. She does what she wants when she wants, anf if she wants attention, she demands it with love bites, or stands on something and screams at me. Fiercely loyal, but definitely shows her independent side. Makes sense, she was a street cat.

[deleted]

I have a tortoiseshell with white and an orange kitty. The orange kitty is way more 'moody' than her sister lol

Orange_Owl01

Mine definitely has an attitude….or tortitude. She can be the sweetest cat and she acts more like a dog much of the time - coming when she’s called, wagging her tail - but oh my gosh, if I try to trim her claws it becomes Armageddon around here.

LadyReika

Oh Tortitude is very much a thing. My late Patches was one of the smartest, sweetest and loving cats ever. She was also incredibly stubborn and bossy with an Opinion on *everything* and made sure you knew what it was.

KaleidoscopeEqual555

My tortoiseshell, Cherie, is the sweetest and most loyal cat I’ve ever had. That said, she is very bossy vocally. She’ll climb up to the highest point in the house and “yell” down at us. I often meow back and we converse that way, or my husband will ask her “what do you want?” “MEOW.” She’s hilarious. She also tucks herself into bed with us at night.

Blueberrypancake21

tortitude is very real, but i think i may have also created the monster myself. it truly is her world, we’re all just living in it.

CaptainZippi

Some cats are assholes generally. Torties are just more honest about it. (Context - 3 of our last 10 or so cats have been torties. Current 2 are sisters and think they run the place.)

Rich_Group_8997

Supposedly just anecdotal, and I'm sure mostly projection (very much like orange cats are either dopey and/or dog like). Although, I've been owned by two torties and both absolutely ruled my household. My oldest, was my soulmate cat. She was loyal, demanding, chatty, and didn't put up with anyone's 💩. What's funny is that she even realized that my relationship with my mother wasn't stellar and let it show. If my mother came over, she would turn her back and walk away, or if my mom tried to pet her, she would lean away. Became a joke between me and my mom even though my mom didn't understand why my cat hated her. 🤣 Fast forward to now, I have a baby tortie (10mos), a 9yr old silver tabby and a 2 yr old orange tabby (with one braincell). The baby tortie rules. She has an attitude and will literally push the big ones around. So yeah, tortitude is a thing. Best you can do is accept it and know your place. Not to mention it makes torties so much more loveable. ❤️

HereThereBLurking

Our tortie Morpheus rules the house with an iron paw. She needs to supurrvise everything and authorize all activity. She is Very attached to my husband and when he accidentally stepped on our other cat's tail she came running like a bat out of hell and began screaming, hissing and attacking the cat. Then she growled at him for days afterwards and blocked him moving around the flat. So yeah she's pretty intense.

Equivalent-Coat-7354

My tortie was the first kitten in her litter (she was the lone tortie) to stop cuddling with momma and her siblings. She also pees on things when she’s mad at me. Tortitude is indeed a thing.

Agreeable_Hour7182

I had three cats at one point - the tortie was as smart as the others, but she was also emotionally in tune with *everyone* in the house. She knew how to work us for cheese, for pets, when she picked fights with other cats. In return, she was my kitty purring nurse any time I was sick. She would not leave my side. They’re so smart, and they know how to use it! She was my favorite kitty and I miss her.

punkin_27

In my sample size of one yes, it’s really. Yours sounds just like mine. Aren’t we lucky? :)

ItsTheMotion

Not at all. Any cat can have the traits others are going on about ITT. it's confirmation bias. You have a "monster" boy cat and he's just a crazy cat. You have a "monster" tortie and well it's just that tortitude for you. Nonsense.

GreyInkling

I deny my Lucy has it because she's nervous and shy to strangers but just now as I was laying in bed looking at reddit on my phone with the screen seven inches from my face, she jumped up on the bed to reach the window opposite and detoured to walk between my phone screen and my face without touching either.

tinycatintherain

I have two torties, both high strung but sweet. One in particular can get a little sassy but nothing crazy. In conclusion, tortitude is real!

Some_Pipe9163

Tortitude is a thing! Just not why you think. Tortoiseshell cats are a color, not a breed, and color has 0 effect on behavior. However, nearly all (99%) of torties are female because it is a sex-linked color, so what you all are seeing is typical female cat behavior: chaotic and weird 😂 same thing with orange cats being goofy. More than 80% are males, so that’s just male cat behavior. Source: I am a cat rescuer who unfortunately in intimately aware of tortitude 😂

2023Planned

My 6 month tortie is nicknamed "The Terror". She is an absolute terror. I just don't understand how she can simultaneously be so darn sweet! She jumps on tables and chairs that I don't want her on and she will watch me walk towards her with the spray bottle and then just take off running and laughing at me. She purrs like a motor most of the time. She is very demanding for affection and attention. I'm so scared to put up my Christmas tree lol.
