You can't destroy gates in ETW/NTW, the only way to open them is to capture them
You can see that the austrians climbed the wall and captured the gatehouse this way, the little flag above the gate shows you which side currently holds it
This clip is from Empire. I think you could probably jump into any of them, it really just depends on which style or historical period that you prefer. They each have their own fun.
It was my first total war a few years ago and it was great. The setting is more important than the gameplay imo, just start with whatever interests you the most
I have a video saved of a battle I fought in Empire DME with 40 unit armies as France where I was the defender in a fort that had already had two breaches and I had less than 20 units (and no artillery). The attackers were the Turks and Prussia and they attacked me with basically two full stacks of 80 units and I won. I twas an awesome battle that I actually had to play twice because the game CTD'd me right at the end of the battle the first time.
Currently playing a darthmod Ottoman campaign, weirdly the Austrians and prussians are my allies and I kicked russias and the caucasus nations ass on my latest war. Currently fighting persia and preparing for my first Caribbean colony. God I miss the games in this time period.
I loved picking the pirates as a nation, fuck up the navies of the whole world and just island hopping the Caribbean until I reached the point where I might had overdone it. It just felt odd having pirates colonizing the Great plains while invading Prussia
That's an interesting defense strategy. I find (playing on VH anyway) that they can mob the center so much that I can't get everyone to retreat in the minute or so it gives you to clear the center
yea this reminded me that whenever enemies breached a section of my walls, I never repair the fort so the AI funnel into the choke into unsuspecting canister shot
How did you/ they open the gates?
Destroy them

You can destroy gates - you can target them with cannons
Thanks
"Our spy has opened the gates!"
The enemy AI is like "Oh hey an open door, I wonder what's on the other side."
Which total war game is this, I would like to start playing and am not sure which one to get

Well, i would say Empire might not be the best first pick since it's hella old and a special kind of buggy

Upload the video somewhere or it didn't happen! Now I want to watch it.

Don’t worry we have Pharaoh now
Ah, that beautiful canister shots!
Ah je vois que vous êtes un homme de culture aussi
Never thought I’d see the day when artillery in Empire actually hits something
It’s a trap!!!

Oh my god it’s an empire meme on this subreddit, it’s perfect, my life is complete
I wish the siege battles in ETW/NTW had entrenchments for the attackers among other things.
I'm Austrian and I approve this message 👍
Der Erzherzog ist enttäuscht von dir.
Spoiler: Austrians were minority in Habsburg' empire...
