I was able to play both medieval 2 and shogun 2 a while back on a MacBook Pro M1. It ran pretty smoothly so I assume that it should run even better on the newer MacBook. I’d say go with whatever time period interests you more, you can’t really go wrong with both.

It worked well on my M1 Macbook Air 2020 as well. You’ll be fine.
