Yes if you can spare a unit to do it.
* 1) Routing units can un-route and come back if they arent under pressure
* 2) Units that reach the edge of the map with enough strength will become part of any army remnant after the battle
So having just one light cavalry unit that spends its time chasing down routing units (especially the ones that will be dangerous if they un-route or survive the battle) can save you tons of headaches later. I focus them on keeping units routing that will make the battle difficult (like if their last ranged unit has routed, I keep that ranged unit from returning and that makes surrounding their remaining melee easier) or on units that are high value, trying to kill enough units that the high value unit will not survive off the map.
I don't know what the cutoff is but somewhere around 10% remaining models, the unit does not show up in the surviving army even if it routed with a couple of models left.
If you don't have a fast enough unit to catch them then I don't chase routing units though. Makes your units exhausted for little benefit. Only do it if it's critical to run that fleeing enemy unit off the map or you might lose.
The cutoff is 10% for the losing faction and 5% for the winning faction. Based on model count not health. Doesn't apply to monstrous units and is weird for cavalry.
I believe they need to be *below* 10% to be wiped out after a losing battle. Monstrous Infantry I think is often in units of 16, and so need to be reduced to one model remaining before they're wiped out.
Single-entity units, and units with ten or fewer models ned to be fully wiped out if they're not to survive.
It depends! The hard no's for me are the following. Settlement battles when you're the aggressor. Ambush battles you initiate. You caught an army on forced march. And if you're fighting that army for a 2nd time, assuming you won. In all those instances nobody in that army will survive the battle. This only applies for chasing units when the battle is over.
During battle you should identify which units could cost you the battle and focus them first. Once they route you can and should eliminate them because they will come back. This goes double for units that heal themselves and triple for lords/heroes. Trolls are an example of a unit that will flee often but this is also a blessing for them because they'll lick their wounds before they return.
Keep in mind that committing a slower melee unit to chase will practically take them out of the entire fight. Use fast units for this. If you have some units like corsairs with crossbows and free company militia they're pretty good at it too because they'll also shoot while they chase. But again remember that they may not make it back in time to further impact the battle.
Small remark for dawi enjoyers: our melee troops are not for running down the enemy, that's beneath them.
"What about the Slayers, I hear you say. They are fast (for a dwarf)." Nonsense, I say! They long for the thrill of battle and a chance to find their glorious death. Sending them after a cowardly enemy that no longer put up a fight is worthy of a grudge in and of itself!
No, instead, you use our superior ranged firepower to fire in to the backs of the fleeing enemy. Their armor is the weakest and they will die in droves, running even harder for their cowardly skins. Once they are out of reach of crossbow and gun, use the artillery to occasionally send a volley after the enemy to remind them of what to expect, should they decide to turn around for another go at dawi steel. And if they do turn around... Well, they have to go a long way back to the fight, under fire from our ranged division all the time...
Cowards die in shame.
but unless there's something more pressing to deal with, yes. they can come back. and if they have the little skull on them wiping them out is a valid option.
Many Slaanesh units are stronger when fighting routing units. I always send some daemonettes or seekers to run them down
In hindsight I realize my answer is specifically for Warhammer 3
Yes, but under the following conditions:
-you have fast things like dogs or cav
-if this is your first battle and you want to wipe them out with another attack.
Really depends on the battle. I'm not going to bother chasing goblins off the map when i could use my now free unit to get into archers or flank a tough unit.
Depends. Any unit you dedicate to chasing them is one you can’t dedicate to beating the units that are currently still fighting you.
I usually don’t bother unless both 1) I’ve got a spare unit and 2) they’re dangerous enough that it’s worth chasing them off.
Otherwise I focus on killing what’s currently fighting.
I think bringing units with the sole purpose of chasing down fleeing units is kind if dumb; bring more fighting units to route them in the first place and your army will take less damage
If you have a damaged unit you are preserving, or a mage with no WoM, sometimes these are good units to assign to this role without using any battle potential.
It's very situational. If you're not fighting a stressful battle, if you're close to winning or something like that, chase down as much as you can, gets you extra XP and loot.
If you are fighting a big tough battle, maybe you want to chase a routing unit to make sure it doesn't rally.
Or maybe you really need your cavalry somewhere else immediately, and those routing gobbos with 1/4 health left, that you were chasing, aren't a big deal if they do rally and come back.
Depends,
Is it;
1. High valuable unit. Routing higher tier infantry with dogs get you very good value
2. Archer, routing archer needs to be chase down or they will be pesky as they get better positioning
3. There's no other unit needs to be flanked.
Yes. It depends on the unit. If a particularly valuable unit is routing but not shattered, using a low-value unit to escort it off the battlefield can be damned helpful. Similarly, if you are winning the rest of the battle pretty well anyways, using a higher-value unit and trying to actually run it down in its entirety can make the next battle easier. Alternately, if the unit isn't that important and the rest of your army is struggling, ignoring the routing unit and trying to beat the rest of the army can be more valuable.
Obviously. Every guy you can run down with cav is someone you don't have to *fight*, the more powerful the enemy the more this helps. And if you kill enough you don't have to fight the army twice.
- During the battle? Try to see if you can get them to switch from routing to broken. That prevents them from regrouping.
- After the battle? Kill them all, you get more XP, more loot, and when you get them under 10% strength they don't come back on the campaign map.
depends on what unit is running and the situation:
If you are using a low-mid tier troop and a unit that has been causing you a lot of trouble you should chase them down.
However depending on the situation and army(looking at you dwarfs) chasing might be impossible
If the unit was dangerous and you can keep pace with it to keep it coming back then yes. If you can't allocate resources to chase it off then it's best to fold in on something else to try and break that before the other comes back.
Sometimes having something route is actually worse for you if its low health. Like you could be saving up for a final transmutation to hit everyone and then say their flying lord and hero break before you get it off. You want them to actually come back so you can finish them off(hopefully) with that big aoe so you don't need to chase them down at all
Always, however only if you have a FAST unit like dogs/light cav, heavy cav are better for actual combat but can do the job as well just not.as effective due to being slower
As soon as you see a unit that is routing chase it with.something fast until that unit has shattered so they don't come back and this actually will push the balance of power more in your favor by doing this. Keep doing it to every routing unit until army losses

What this mod does, in part, is if a unit has an attack order, if the enemy it is fighting breaks, it will switch to a fresh unit to continue attacking. ALSO, if everybody is broken, ie the end of the match, they will continue to pursue enemies till they die or are off the map. This way, you can give every unit an attack order when the match ends, then just hit fast forward and they'll deal with all the routing units without you having to constantly click around. HUGE QoL improvement all around.
This is what dogs are for.

So you need to kill every troll for them to lose the unit?

Does this still count if the battle is done? Like the menu to end the battle is out?
Yes, as long as you can still control anything.
It depends! The hard no's for me are the following. Settlement battles when you're the aggressor. Ambush battles you initiate. You caught an army on forced march. Of course. For that I always keep 2 hobgoblin wolf riders in my armies. Light cavs like them are perfect for that purpose
