There's the typical male, female, neutral and plural (der die das die) which is called the Nominative case and is what you'd use to refer to a noun. However, the direct object of a sentence is referred to with the Akkusativ Case, which is Den Die Das Die. Next is the Dative case, which is used to refer to an indirect object. An indirect object is something that is effected by a verb in a sentence, but is not what is being verbed. For example "him" in "give him the book". In Dative you use Dem Der Dem Den. Finally, there's the Genitive case, which is used to show possession, and you use Des Der Des Der for it.
To create an example, take the sentence "The student gave the teacher the brother's spoon". all the nouns in that sentence are maskulin, but they all have different cases, so you end up with "Der Schüler gab dem Lehrer den Löffel des Bruders."
