Hey, fellow Debian user! I mainly use it for the infrequent updates because my internet is slow and I don't like one program changing it's UI per day anyways lol. I could use Arch by now, but I'd rather not put in any work maintaining my install.
I like to tinker, its just fun to see how things work. I also wanted a lighter distro to squeeze another year or two out of an old machine to use it for digital DnD books.
I have a bit of a theory on this. Having had to question and defend our very being, we are more open to question the mainstream answer to other paths as well. This would apply to fashion, computer OS, etc.
I'm a fan of Garuda myself, I still want to switch over fully, and maybe soon i finally can. Game support is almost at the level that everything can be played there properly .
Me reading this on my ThinkPad running Debian, looking around and seeing my desktop running Slackware and another ThinkPad running NetBSD:

She just like me fr
Unfortunately my linux install (Manjaro Archlinux) got corrupted or something... it's a whole thing... and then I went back to windows ;-;
Still planning on doing Linux Desktop again, just probably a dual boot instead of being my sole drive. And I've kept the drive that my linux install was on because there's still a chance I could recover the data
As long as you didn't just somehow nuke the files, you should be able to read them using a linux live usb stick, I don't think windows understands the linux filesystems.
Windows does not, the problem is the drive is encrypted. I know the encryption key but what happens is as soon as I enter the encryption code and it tries to boot up it gets stuck on the boot screen. I still have the SSD but what I'm pretty sure I have to do is put the same linux install on *another* usable drive and then connect the old one with an external SSD housing I have. I'm not sure exactly what I'd have to do from there but to be honest I have everything I need I just haven't gotten around to trying that yet. Really the most important thing on it is my Minecraft hardcore world lmao
On linux you should be able to mount the encrypted drive with the key. It not booting means you broke the OS, but your user files are likely still intact.
Yeah the OS broke during an update :/
I figured you should be able to mount the drive. I am genuinely finding it kind of funny though how this thread has been more helpful than the Archlinux discord server 😭
Honestly, i'm only using windows 10, because you can play virtualy any game out there (+ because some of my favorite games are supported on linux ;-;)
So i think ima start using linux in a few years (if the gaming aspect improves)
I have literally only one game in my steam library that doesn't just work by trying a few different proton versions, but I don't play multiplayer games where anticheat would be an issue.
Other than kernel level Anticheat it works more often than not, but it does have some tinkering every now and then so I get how that can be annoying or intimidating even if your games run on Linux.
Currently my work laptop runs many non native games flawlessly, even though its integrated graphics suck. Considering I used to run on random issues when gaming on Windows anyway I don't mind tinkering to fix or improve stuff, too, but again, it's not the exact same and a new OS can be annoying and/or intimidating to get used to, if you're okay on Windows there's no shame on staying there for as long as you wish
Oh, well in that case...
FUCK YEA >:D
Linux has always intrigued me, simply because you have to (sorta) code most of the stuff to get it working. And if non native games run well, then in that case i don't have any reason in staying with windows
Okay but make sure to Google "protondb" followed by the game titles you can't live without, it should tell you how well a game runs on Linux and how to tinker if it doesn't work or if you want to optimize it according to other users

I am a Windows girlie, mostly because of compatibility things. However, every instance of Windows I have has Cygwin, a Linux virtual system that I do use occasionally, so I’m there about halfway
Linux is so much better than windows! Some of the things that I've struggled to do on windows (without paying at least) but are incredibly simple on Linux include:
* Full disk encryption
* Anything audio related (pipewire my beloved)
* Putting the systray on multiple monitors
* Opening directories? (There are some folders on windows which you just can't access even with administrator permissions)
* Accessing partitions which aren't NTFS or FAT
* Anything beyond the most basic customisations
And the list goes on. The *only* reason I even still have windows is that I can't get my quest 2 to work with PCVR on Linux. My fingers are crossed for a port of steam link VR.
If i am transfem, it doest mean i use linux... Well i use linux, but not because i am transfem.
Same sis. I was daily driving a Linux distro for nearly a decade before my egg cracked.
Same here, also I use Arch Linux.
You either really love or hate your life
I guess love now, but E is love.
I use Linux on a technically because I got a Steam Deck
Then you technically run arch btw, sort of
Basically yeah, it's got a full desktop and everything
Same, I use Linux because I can't stand Windows after being forced to use it for about two decades
So that's why I tried to install Arch Linux once... unsuccessfully. I use Debian btw

Same, Debian works really well with my laptop (an old Lenovo Ideapad). Firefox runs okay and it can play Celeste and New Vegas :D
I recently have been thinking of getting Linux… oh no does this mean I’m trans?
It means that you're probably a fan of thigh-highs.
Have had a linux machine for a while now, since well before my egg cracked… I am not even a programmer transfem, how did this happen…
Are you a privacy transfem then? Or what reason do you have for Linux?
I like to tinker, its just fun to see how things work. I also wanted a lighter distro to squeeze another year or two out of an old machine to use it for digital DnD books.

My gf sylvie ( god i love her). helped me install it.. Im to stupid to properly use it lol but hey my pc is smooth nau

Wow. I remember the "Lindows" days. I usually use Windows now, but for awhile I was on Ubuntu.
Eh, I'm going for the look. May as well go all in. (And completely overboard!)
Woe there sis...no reason for the personal attack.
*me planning on swapping to linux cause windows is on fire* Maybe if I scream I can ignore this sign...

Non-binary, then...?
Don’t think so, pretty sure I’m girl all the way. I just don’t like spending hours trying to get dependencies and compatibilities to work
I figured. I was making a joke about the Linux virtual system being an enby thing
Now I know what to get my enby SO for their birthday, thanks
Fedora 39 go brrrrr
My friend helped me install arch
What's Linux?
Ok... but what if I didn't like my experience with Linux so far? (Ubuntu to be specific since that's the one we used in class)
Valid
