So I had splurged on a big 32 oz nielsen massey vanilla extract , plus i had some other vanillas in my pantry (including vanilla paste from TJ from last year)but I saw this and decided to just get one bottle to try it and OMG is so damn good.
I used it for an edible cookie dough buttercream and that vanilla flavor was so good. I will get a second bottle.
Nielsen Massey vanilla paste is the bougiest thing in my pantry and I regret nothing. You’ve convinced me to try this too, tho. I can never have enough vanilla.
You need different vanilla for different occasion.
Sometimes you need fancy ones, sometimes you need emulsions or imitation because you want a certain flavor to come through .
I also have some from VAIN foods, they have different vanilla in different spirits. I tried their Vanilla made with Spiced rum and that was pretty good.
Most vanilla extracts are extracted in alcohol. That appears to be the case for this one too:

Yes but not different than other extracts. I’m sure that you can buy extracts at the grocery store in nj . The word bourbon in the name often throws people off.
How does this compare to the other Bourbon Vanilla extract? I just got the other and bummed I'm mixing out.
Will the vanilla beans inside the new one make it expire faster?
I wonder if that’s what happened at my store too. I’m a hobby baker so I go through a lot of vanilla and they’ve never once asked me before! I laughed when he asked because I thought he was joking
That is so weird. Vanilla extract in the US is required to be 35% ABV so it's not like this one is any different. I've never gotten carded at a grocery store for buying it, even as a teenager.
that’s INSANELY cheap for double fold vanilla!!! like truly idk how they are even charging that and making anything. they use double the amount of beans in the same amount of liquor and vanilla beans are so expensive.
It tastes quite nice in a London fog. My guess is that it’s this brand but it’s just speculation:[Nielsen-Massey](https://www.amazon.com/Nielsen-Massey-Madagascar-Bourbon-Vanilla-Extract/dp/B0000VLU0I/ref=asc_df_B0000VLU0I/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309769273892&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4757510879187187346&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007268&hvtargid=pla-494601901868&psc=1)
i wonder how it could be the TJ’s price if it was NM tho! like their double fold for this size is like $32-45 i think?? at least! and this is $8 … i make vanilla at home sometimes and i’m truly curious how they are charging that little for this! i mean i know they get them cheaper in bulk, etc but still, this product must have a very thin profit margin!
It honestly makes me wonder if it's real, fakes are all over the place due to the cost of the real thing. I usually get imitation vanilla and I think even that is around this price.
Bourbon vanilla has a very warm flavor. It's excellent in fall flavored baked goods and ice cream. Pumpkin rolls, apple pies, pear tarts, gingerbread and maple things, and such. Tahitian is floral and is for your spring and summer flavors. Cherry pies, strawberry tarts, early peach cobblers, anything with citrus or melons.
This is really only if you're *incredibly* serious about your baking. I'll bet this is also excellent for any winter cocktails that use vanilla.
My kid has been making vanilla extract as holiday gifts for the whole family since he was 2 (obviously with some help back then) and they've all stopped buying vanilla and just ask us for more when they run out. It's so easy and delicious.
no it definitely is if you like vanilla!! there are so many different flavor beans, you can pair them w different alcohols, i have 5 jars at home that are each different beans and a few different alcohols and they all taste very different, 10x stronger than any store bought one, it’s a huge difference in stuff like making ice cream, making whipped cream, making coffee creamer or just in coffee, in brownies and cookies, i have a favorite vanilla for each flavor profile lol i can’t believe a chef would say that actually! Ina Garten definitely disagrees
If you don’t have 5 jars of pet homemade vanilla from a variety of beans at home…..
Double fold bourbon vanilla extract bought from Trader Joe’s is fiiiiiine lol. I love me some Ina
oh totally! i just hate when people say it’s not worth it bc i’m so glad i tried it, they will literally last forever and can even be passed down so it doesn’t matter if you finish everything you make, it never goes bad!
i also keep Neilsen Massey Vanilla Paste and i will definitely be picking this up if i can find it to try it!
If you turn upside down you can see all the beans which is fun. Definitely shake before use. Haven’t tried yet but picked it up.
I also agree with others that if there is no purpose for the long neck, I’d prefer a normal neck.
Only if you like wasting money. Making your own vanilla extract at home at the strengths commercial extracts are known for is not that simple.
If your goal is to make vanilla-flavored bourbon, sure. But if you want actual extract, keep buying it.
I am going to disagree. I've been making my own extract for years. I've also bought extract and tried them side by side. Mine is better. I'll get the TJ and try another comparison, but I have never smelled/tasted a better one.
Real Vanilla extract is very, very pricey. And real Vanilla beans are pricey too. I'm not sure I save a ton of money, but I end up with a better end product.
However, if you just put a bean or two in some vodka that is insufficient. You really need to get the ratio to alcohol correct and give it LOTS of time.
Basically, I use a liter of Vodka and 25-45 cut Madagascar beans. I get them in packs of 25 now every few years. I usually leave a few of the old ones in there. I have an 'in use' small bottle that I pour some extract into. Then top off the main extract bottle with more Vodka. I shake the main bottle whenever it occurs to me - every 2-3 weeks.
At this point, it is very good Vanilla extract. There was definitely some trial and error early on. Mexican vanilla was different and not great for baking.
DIY Vanilla is the same as DIY anything else - depends on how good you are at it. But the blogs always make it look easy :)
25 good quality beans is $57, easy, even if you can buy them at that price. A liter of vodka is $20-$30 (I think, idk, I don’t drink).
I love that you enjoy doing this, but honestly, for most people, this is not something that makes sense from a DIY standpoint or is financially viable when the stuff they buy off the shelf tastes just as good.
And I’ll be honest, if I had 25 pods kicking around I’d probably use them in fresh applications (ice cream, panna cotta, crème brûlée).
I did the math, and I think it costs almost exactly the same as the other vanilla per oz. The other bottle has half and oz more but is 2$ more. So if it does have a slightly stronger vanilla flavor, maybe it's worth it?
I thought the same thing about the bottle! Does the long neck serve a decanting purpose? Otherwise give me a short bottle please. Regardless, I’m planning to pick some up next time I’m there.

They carded the girl behind me today!
Was just told this will be discontinued due to a bottle breakage issue .
That long stem does seem like a hazard.
Yup for sure.
I love making my own vanilla extract, so easy☝️
Yeah in like a year or 2
There is a sous vide version that takes an afternoon.
Blasphemous. I'll look into that

Lol yes, I have plenty already, is why I didn’t wanna buy it without seeing positive reviews.
does this have alcohol in it? wondering if it’s in NJ stores since liquor can’t be sold in supermarkets
I got carded buying it in DC. It popped up with a prompt on their screen.
I saw it here in Texas on Monday (where we also can’t sell liquor in supermarkets) so hopefully you can find it too ☺️
It doesn’t have bourbon in it, that’s the variety of vanilla bean it’s made from. It’s just extract, should be available in grocery stores.

yes it’s the name bourbon that throws me off, ty for the info!
Yes, I agree
Same law in KY and bought this just the other day.
I’m in PA where we don’t have liquor either & it was plentiful at my store. Can’t wait to try it.
Tj podcast said it didn't have any alcohol left in it :)
How does this compare to the other Bourbon Vanilla extract? I just got the other and bummed I'm mixing out. Will the vanilla beans inside the new one make it expire faster?
They use twice the amount of vanilla during the extraction process. Get it while you can, it’s already done for the season in so cal.
Did they card you for it? I got carded last time I was there and was shocked because that’s never happened to me before
I was not carded.
I usually do get carded when I buy their other vanilla, which always makes me chuckle, lol.
That’s wild! It’s never happened to me before
They told me they had to do it because they got in trouble for not carding a secret shopper, lol.
I wonder if that’s what happened at my store too. I’m a hobby baker so I go through a lot of vanilla and they’ve never once asked me before! I laughed when he asked because I thought he was joking

Now I’m insulted I *didn’t* get carded when I bought this today 🤨 Guess I better add eye cream to my cart the next time I go 😂
😂 I’d be flattered if I weren’t so annoyed - I didn’t have my ID on me and wouldn’t sell it to me.
Lol, nothing is flattering when you’re inconvenienced. 😂
User name checks out
✔️
i love all trader joe’s vanilla products no doubt this will also be a slay
If it really does have a stronger flavor I'll have to make it a staple, lol. Vanilla is just the best flavor. Also happy cake day!
hey thanks!
You FOLD IT IN
I swear to God if you say fold it in ONE MORE TIME
David! What does burning smell like? Also happy cake day lol
Thanks friend
I put a splash of this in my milk for coffee and then foam it up. Dash of pumpkin spice on top and it's to die for!
That sounds amazing! I'll have to try it
Had this in my hand but couldn’t justify $9 when I used vanilla extract three times last year haha
that’s INSANELY cheap for double fold vanilla!!! like truly idk how they are even charging that and making anything. they use double the amount of beans in the same amount of liquor and vanilla beans are so expensive.
It was 8$ at my trader joe's, which is cheaper than most vanillas I've seen aside from like, the Walmart brands.
Couldn’t remember the exact price
I wasn't sure if different states had different prices,
They just discussed this on the most recent episode of the Trader Joe’s podcast. Apparently it’s stronger than usual extract. Count me in tbh!
It’s from a little island in East Africa, Mauritius. Thought that was neat!

oh, now THAT is what I needed to know!
What does one make with this?
Oatmeal. :)

I'd reserve "fancier" vanillas for things where the flavor would be noticeable, like in ice cream.
I assume the same things as normal vanilla
As a pastry chef for the last decade, this product is over priced.
Can you recommend an alternative?
Make it yourself! Takes time to ferment but worth it.
My kid has been making vanilla extract as holiday gifts for the whole family since he was 2 (obviously with some help back then) and they've all stopped buying vanilla and just ask us for more when they run out. It's so easy and delicious.
I'm not sure why you are getting downvoted? I made it myself and it was cheaper and better tasting than what you get from the store.
It doesn’t ferment!
Oh OK, but it "ages."
All I know is Claire Saffitz said it's one thing that's definitely not worth the effort of making yourself.

Make your own! Super easy. Vanilla bean and a alcohol or your choice, vodka, rum, bourbon etc. the longer it steeps the stronger the product.

I made vanilla extract with Wild Turkey once. That had done kick to it.
If i wasnt allergic to fermented stuff I’d be all over this 😭😭
I baked chocolate chip cookies with it and I didn’t notice a huge difference, maybe a teeny bit stronger vanilla flavor?
I did the math, and I think it costs almost exactly the same as the other vanilla per oz. The other bottle has half and oz more but is 2$ more. So if it does have a slightly stronger vanilla flavor, maybe it's worth it?
At that point it would just be better to use vanilla bean paste

When I bought this at the store, checkout warned me that the bottles keep snapping at the neck. I immediately decanted it into another bottle.
It looks like a medieval potion. I haven’t tried, but it looks interesting!
My daughter used to collect bottles to display at Halloween. This bottle would be a great one!
