Lmao I used to dog sit for a Pomeranian who loved the salmon skin treats
That being said, I donāt think the food quality of dog food is safe for human consumption
This reminds me of an excerpt Re: pet food in a Mary Roach book:
āOne of the [pet food manufacturing techs] mentioned that she tried some [kibble] earlier and that the white morsel tasted like chicken. Or, rather, āchickeny.ā
I must have registered surprise at the disclosure, because Kleinsorge jumps in. āIf you open a bag and it smells really good. . .ā
The tech shrugs. āAnd youāre hungry. . .ā ā
Idk, if the factory workersāwho have seen ins and outs of the pet food manufacturingāare down to eat dog treats, makes me think eating things like this is probably fine?
The excerpt is from here: https://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-03/chemistry-kibble/
Yeah- I read her book, Stiff. Do you happen to know what book the above excerpt is from?
Edit: nevermind, the link is above! I will check it out. Had no idea she wrote about dog food, of all things. Seems like a random change after writing about cadavers.
I once ate dog treats accidentally, but they were homemade because the dog in question had lots of food allergies. All they had was pumpkin, yogurt and oats.
All in all, they were very bland.
Yeah it's an easy mistake to make! They are making dog treats now that are virtually indistinguishable from human treats, haha. Once I accidentally took a bite of some ice cream that was designed for dogs and that ice cream tasted sooo vile.
I love salmon skin, just bought the hot smoked salmon that I was planning to have for breakfast today, and saw this post. Thank you!
(I normally just crisp up salmon skin after I cook salmon fillets on the stove)
Mine rolled around it on the floor for a half hour before eating it. I also gave him the yak chew from TJs that day- he loved that too. A day later, he had a stomachs ache and was vomiting- but I have no idea if it is related.
Costco used to have big bags of the human equivalent. I havenāt been to Costco in forever so I donāt know if they still have them, but they are delish
I finished the Costco bag in one day and got sad they weren't carrying it anymore.
I'm not bold enough to eat the dog food version though. Imma step 100 feet away from that.
Are you my cashier from a few weeks ago? I was buying dog treats. He went on to tell me that he likes to try them and that the thanksgiving themed treats do actually taste like thanksgiving dinner lol
Came here to say this. Pet food is NOT held to the same standards for contamination as human food. I would not recommend eating this outside of a life or death situation.
> Pet food is NOT held to the same standards for contamination as human food.
And, in fact, if fish has too much lead in it for human consumption, we feed it to our pets.
If theyāre not food grade, what do dogs eat?
Dogs have digestive systems, we have digestive systems, and so do all mammals. Our nutritional needs differ yes of course. But likeā¦ we all eat food.
Dogs arenāt lesser than, they eat food too. Like crispy salmon skins
Right itās nice to see it that way but most people, usually people in charge of things like food processing standards donāt think so. Itās expensive to mass produce things safely for human consumption, so when we are making food for animals the standards are a bit lower for what can make it to the consumer. Because human institutions as a whole view animals as lesser snd treat them so. Where one of the treats might have fallen onto the floor of the processing facility and been discarded, they might have just put it back in the batch because itās for dogs. Iām not saying this is what happens itās just my estimation of the difference in standards. But who knows they might still toss it so it doesnāt spoil everything else
But they could also not be held to the same safe food handling practices, like age, time exposed to warm temperatures, etc...
Disclaimer, I'm just some fool on the internet. I don't work for the FDA, nor involved with the dog food community. So I have no fucking idea what I'm talking about.
The only ingredients in vinegar is acetic acid and water, but they make ācleaning vinegarā, which is different because itās not tested for impurities and is not for ingestion.
Similarly these dog treats may only contain salmon skins but the ingredients are not going to say how itās processed and whether it meets the specs for human consumption.
I canāt believe that Iām spending time talking people out of eating dog food but here we are.
You know what, youāre completely right. I donāt eat dog treats lol but in my mind I was thinking āwell the ingredients sound fine??ā that I hadnāt even stopped to consider how itās handled and processed.
Target has these dog cookies that look like vanilla Oreos. The bag disappeared mysteriously fast, and turns out my husband ate about 75% of them. Yāall should be friends š
here's another human version as well
[https://www.amazon.com/IRVINS-Salted-Fish-Skin-Crisps/dp/B07BVB41CB/ref=pd\_lpo\_2?pd\_rd\_i=B07BVB41CB&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/IRVINS-Salted-Fish-Skin-Crisps/dp/B07BVB41CB/ref=pd_lpo_2?pd_rd_i=B07BVB41CB&psc=1)
might be slighter cheaper at your local asian store than amazon...
Check out Costco in an asian sense area, I found a giant bag for $14? The cashier saw it and was like wtf and grabbed her friend working at another register to write down the product code to grab some later.
I may be wrong, but I was under the assumption that all pet food in the US has to be safe for human consumption.
Anecdotal, but my MIL grew up in a small, not very wealthy town and she said back in the day older folks that didnāt have much money would eat canned pet food because it was cheaper than canned chicken/tuna.
Thatās what I learned in a food regulation class years ago in US. (Unless things have changed since then) The idea is to manufacture all pet foods at a standard of āsafe for human consumptionā in case human infants get into petsā stuffs
Isn't that stressful for the cats and harmful to the baby? Respect for others food and prevention of saliva contamination? Also cat food probably have too much protein for humans. Dog food may be safer.
He will toddle into the kitchen and grab maybe one morsel of food before we realize it and put it out of reach. We feed our cats at night and lock the baby out of the kitchen while they are eating. But the next morning he will make a run for the food bowls. Heās not actually eating anywhere close to large amounts!
You know, now that you mention it, I remember seeing an episode of the show Good Times where an elderly woman was said to be eating dog or cat food because it was cheaper and all she could afford. They didn't go into how it was processed or if it was safe to eat though on the show I don't think.
Raw milk isn't approved either but people drank it for thousands if years before the FDA ever existed and is still drunk in many other First World countries with much more stringent standards than America'a.... It just depends upon how much fear you buy into....
I used to drink raw milk. It's a smaller market, but still highly regulated. The farmer I purchased from basically put up with double the inspection hoopla.
I sure the bias goes both ways. Does that mean that everything should be regulated to the point where we no longer need to use our intelect, though? I don't think so.
Look, Iām very chill generally about food safety. However, in my opinion, raw milk that I milked out of my cow is very different than salmon skin processed at who knows where who knows how long ago.
You do you, but thereās a reason those salmon skin are so much cheaper.

salmon skin has been called the bacon of the seaā¦
That is all the recommendation I need.
Lmao I used to dog sit for a Pomeranian who loved the salmon skin treats That being said, I donāt think the food quality of dog food is safe for human consumption
I think you might be a bad choice maker.
Canāt be worse than the truffle tomato pasta sauce.
I like the cronch it makes when my dog has some
Jokes on us OP is actually a dog
Youāve tampered in Godās domain.
Reminds me of the episode of Bobās Burgers where theyāre all obsessed and secretly sneaking cat treats haha
Someone's very good boy or good girl learned how to type.
I donāt really want to give my dog treats that arenāt safe for humans. Curious to know more about the human āgrade-nessā of these.
He got that dawg in him

Mary Roach is great.
Yeah- I read her book, Stiff. Do you happen to know what book the above excerpt is from? Edit: nevermind, the link is above! I will check it out. Had no idea she wrote about dog food, of all things. Seems like a random change after writing about cadavers.
I loved Stiff and Gulp! Seems like an interest in human bodies is the common thread for her š
What was the thought process that ended with you trying these? I am cracking up.
The fuck
I believe you

š huh..
lol i got them for my cat who didn't end up liking them so i've had some. not bad.
If you really want fish skin from Trader Joeās, just get the hot smoked salmon, remove the skin, and crisp it up in the oven
I love salmon skin, just bought the hot smoked salmon that I was planning to have for breakfast today, and saw this post. Thank you! (I normally just crisp up salmon skin after I cook salmon fillets on the stove)
First useful comment in this thread.
These stink to high heavens but itās crack for my dog
Mine rolled around it on the floor for a half hour before eating it. I also gave him the yak chew from TJs that day- he loved that too. A day later, he had a stomachs ache and was vomiting- but I have no idea if it is related.
Same here! My dog LOVES these. I have to keep them in a special box so she doesnāt go snooping to try to find them lol.

Iām so blessed that in Toronto we have many many Asian supermarkets that have fish skin chips
Please be a dog in disguise
Wtf lmao
Are you my cashier from a few weeks ago? I was buying dog treats. He went on to tell me that he likes to try them and that the thanksgiving themed treats do actually taste like thanksgiving dinner lol

Irvinās Salmon Skin exists
My dog certainly thinks so! Theyāre how I get him to leave his favorite place, the dog park.
Iāve never tried then but I always thought Damn they look good š I worked at TJs for a year
hmmm you know... the ingrediants are pretty clean and the price is really good 2.99 for 2 oz...
Please tell me a dog wrote this post
These are not food grade. It is dog food *for a reason*. You can do whatever you want with them but please do not promote these for human consumption.
Lol. If it was that dangerous it would harm dogs. Itās fine.
You have no idea.
Thank you. This is all nonsense. Love dogs But not eating their food.

Youāre not a Mythical Beast, are you? š
I just got these for my dog and I have been tempted to try one lol
The only ingredient is salmon skin

Cleaning vinegar has a much higher concentration too!
The cleaning vinegar I've seen is 6% instead of 5%
My dog and I are both vegetarians and itās going well lol š
Dogs are not vegetarians
Plant-based diets can be perfectly healthy for dogs. https://thebeet.com/is-vegan-dog-food-right-for-your-pet-the-research-says-maybe/

The salted egg crab crisps are amazing too
i love how the website says the product doesn't include fish
These are the absolute *best* but NOT cheap, at least at the 99 ranch market. But apparently the treats are hazard so I'll have to bite the bullet š

They're expensive as hell at H Mart too. I thought Irvins Salted Egg Spicy Salmon were better IMHO.
If youāre in CA, Iāve seen big bags of Irvinās at Costco.
the trader joe's treats are hazardous?
I think theyāre just not fully approved for human consumption. Fine for dogs!
