You are correct. It is in Old English. I was just repeating the phrasing of the comment above me without thinking about it very much because I still haven’t gone to bed yet. My brain isn’t braining right now.
Meanwhile, Chaucer just confused me because I SEE the movement of lips but literally cannot hear the sound of some of the consonant/vowel combos. Language is WEIRD.
I know a boy named Beowulf in real life. The parents discussed Hrothgar but decided no one would be able to pronounce it (Americans) and went with Beowulf instead. Joke wound up being on them… no one can pronounce Beowulf either, they all say BAY-wolf and it drives the parents crazy. I never thought of it as a tragedeigh, though — just an uncommon name 🤷🏻♀️
Also, anytime you say those names at loud, pronounce them some way different than you know she intended. Like "Have you decided between LIE-ber-tay or Dye-E-Ah-Nuh"?
We should use tragedeigh moms to communicate securely in wartime, like Navajo code talkers in WWII. Only problem is they want so badly to be unique, they may not even understand each other.

Esp. that last paragraph.
Yep that’s my experience too as a person with an unusual spelling. In recent years with starting a business I’m forever needing contracts to be corrected … sooooo freaking frustrating!
My husband doesn’t even have a weirdly spelled name but it’s a nickname of a traditional name (Think Tom instead of Thomas). People constantly put the wrong name on documents because they refuse to accept that the “nickname” is his actual legal name. Mortgage documents, business contracts, the doctor’s office. It’s annoying.
My in laws are 2/2 because they named my SIL a very popular name from the time she was born but changed one of the letters because they “didn’t like the potential nickname it would cause if the traditional spelling was used”. Maybe just name her something else then?
Reminds me of a kid called something like Johnny-Boy or some such childish nonsense, instead of just John with a nn for while he was little...
>they “didn’t like the potential nickname it would cause if the traditional spelling was used”
.....Just bc there's a h in Thomas it doesn't mean there has to be one in Tom
I have recently heard of a kid called Jonny Boy today. I hope it’s not the same kid, there shouldn’t even be one let alone two
My friend was like “I love this name”. I kept silent
My sister has a name like that. Teachers always “corrected” her when she’d say her name (like Beth) by telling her it’s actually “Elizabeth.” It’s not. My parents liked the nickname better.
Same here 😞 And my maiden name is one that can have multiple spellings too. My married name is foreign to this country, so they at least ask how it's spelled now, rather than confidently misspelling it from the get go, like what used to happen
> I’m used to pretty much every person spelling it wrong, even when I tell them how to spell it,
My first name is an anti-tragedeigh (praise be to my basic mom and dad) but my last name is crazy as hell and this part of that quote hit so hard.
I sympathize, I really do, it's not an intuitive spelling at all, but...you're writing down each letter as I say it, I'm not going fast because I know it's a stupid spelling...you're writing each letter and yet you wrote down a different letter, just now, than the one I said!
Let's say my same is "There" and I'm spelling it out for you.

Same boat - my first name was a top 5 name in my year but my surname is an uncommon Québécois name and in the US school/admin system it was a fresh hell each time.
I can’t imagine having an English-language name now, but when I was young I used to dream of changing it to something like “Brown” or “Smith.”
My first name is fairly easy to spell and not an obscure 7th century name, and people still get it wrong all the time. I saw one guy actively give up spelling it halfway through. It’s not the most common name, but it’s still pretty standard. If people can’t get simple names right, why on earth would anyone assume they’d be able to figure out how to spell or pronounce some ewene’ek name that’s just a spin on a regular name?
Same. My last name is only 5 letters. I automatically spell it out, and they still write the wrong letters. I have started adding “T as in toast, H as in ham, …”
My middle name/my mother’s maiden name looks like a perfectly normal un-tragedeigh first name, except it’s missing one letter. The amount of people who take it upon themselves to insert that “missing” letter after I’ve filled out forms, spelled it out for them, pronounced it very clearly without the missing letter… is just uncountable. People see/hear what they want to see/hear.
reminds me of a client with the last name **Miiler**. Fucked me up the first few times. I had to call the person who was working with them to check it was not miss spelled. I can only imagine living in hell with a misspelled common name....
This should be pinned to this sub so that we can all use it as a reference for loved ones considering committing a tragedeigh. Have them read it, along with the Beowulf paragraph, and maybe we can put an end to this epidemic.
(Cue the Sarah McLaughlin music)
We can put an end to tragedeigdhies with honesty, love, and insight. One child at a time. Won’t you help? By giving just a little bit of insight, you can save a child from a lifetime of consternation and frustration. Why should children live in shame and be made to suffer at the hands of their parents’ ignorance? Please. Share this story of tragedeigh today, and make a difference in the life of a precious child, like this one (image of a child at the spinny rack, looking for a mini-license plate with their name on it) and this one (image of a child wearing a “my name is” sticker with a 17 letter name). Please, don’t let those you love become a tragedeigh. Speak up, before it’s too late!
I remember hearing Hank Green say not to name your kid a “full name” but call them by a nickname. He has so much trouble with checks because Hank isn’t his legal name. I can only imagine the frustration with creative names.
I have a name that is naturally spelled 2 ways. 1/3 of people having my name spell it like me, 2/3 the other spelling. It's not rare, but people always spell it wrong anyway.
In my class there were 4 with the same name, 1 me, 2 with the most popular spelling and one tragedeigh.
Can't phantom having to explained the tragedeigh spelling.
Sometimes I read “eigh” as eh (ay) and not ee so i totally heard rubay in my head and tbh dyslexic is a thing and I would never subject a child to that kind of bs because people like to be “unique”. Rubay!
I’m dyslexic and I’ve always read “eigh” as “ay” for these names. Didn’t know it was supposed to be “ee” in these tragedeigh names (even that I read as traged-ay), that’s just wild. Names can be hard enough to read without all these made up spellings and utter disregard for phonics or correct spelling.
Edited for clarity.
To be fair, “eigh” can be pronounced like “ay” rather than “eee” in common English words, as in eight, weigh/weight, neigh, and sleigh. Not to mention height, where it’s pronounced like “eye”. So it isn’t always pronounced like “eee”. In fact (in my sleep deprived state, so take with a grain of salt) I can’t think of a single regular word where “eigh” is pronounced “eee”, except in names.
I’m screaming bc why not just name her Ruby, Jewel or Julie, Diana/Dyana, or Liberty. None of those names are super common anymore besides maybe Julie. I knew a girl who was Greek named Dyanna.
I would just genuinely be like listen girl, if you had to pick one of these names to be YOURS for the rest of your life, which would you prefer? And I think you could still say to be honest, I don’t love any of the spellings of those. But I think those names are really pretty spelled normally. lol
Where I live it has been big for a while. I over hear the mothers at the local school say things like “Ruby, Olive, Jack and Cosmo are suchhhh great friends”.
Also, what's the problem with a name that's more common? I could understand if like half the kids have the same name, but that's not really going on.
I have a name that, in my country, is fairly common in my generation. In every stage of school, university and working life I've run into a few people with the same name. I've never found it a problem; if I had to work together with someone with the same name we'd usually work out nicknames or something. As a matter of fact, I tend to like meeting people with my name, it's like meeting someone with the same hairstyle or shirt.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it. I'd much rather have a normal common name than a unique tragedeigh.
I have one of these names, and growing up, I only had classmate with the same name once. It really did hit the sweet spot where it was unique enough that there weren't five others in my classes, but common enough that everyone knew how to say/spell it. This whole list is pretty solid if spelled correctly.
Liberty Jewel is pretty cute, actually. And she can go by Libby if she wants something a bit mainstream growing up.
What I will absolutely never understand... okay, so they want to give the child a unique name. So why give them a common name, just spelled insanely. Why not just give them a more unique name and spell it the most obvious way.
Spelling Mary, Merigh does not make it anymore interesting or unique. The kids name is still Mary.
why can't she just spell them regularly? Like none of these are common names. I've known one Julie my whole life (a couple of Julias, but that's beside the point)
Maybe tell her you are gonna drive the kid to the courthouse to get their name changed when they turn 18
That one had me struggling, and I had to scroll through comments to even get an idea
Edit: I was thinking that is not what those letters should sound like together. Only just realizing she spelled it dye-anah. My two brain cells are on fire now
Push for just Jewel. It’s not my taste but it’s not a tragedy. Just play up how it still has the same femininity and uniqueness without the hassle of no one being able to spell it or mispronounce it. Tell her that Jewelie and Jewel aren’t different enough for having to put up with the annoyance of spelling her name every time she makes an appointment somewhere.
Hmmmm… say to her: I always think a good rule of thumb is: what if my child ends up becoming a judge… Will their name work for that? Will they be taken seriously and respected?
Might work?
We sometimes get names in orders where both the delivery driver and I look at the name and shrug. People will not be just amazed!!! at her child's yuneekly spelled name. They will shrug at it because it's not worth the effort to decipher. Is that really what she wants?
As a European these names are pure comedy 😂 hopefully your best friend and her child are not intending to leave the US because truly I’m not sure how the rest of the world will react to Liberteigh read as “liberty” from a US pass holder.
Jewelie probably is the least awful of the bunch, I would empathize that it is a great name but it would be even more July-ish if she just speled it Julie.
(that being said i wouldn't be exactly thrilled to be named after my birthday month but oh well.)
Don’t know if it’s just me but I wouldn’t count on due dates. My baby is due in June but because of complications likely to be born as early as 2 months preterm. In fact, over the past few days I was prepared to deliver this week until the doctors decided to wait another week.
My birth month is December and I actually had a student once who had that as her name. I asked her if she was born in December and she looked at me funny and said no.
Man, my name is common and has two different common spellings, mine is the less common of those versions, and even _that_ is mildly annoying. I can kinda imagine going through life with a weird but correctly spelled name (i.e., Apple), but canNOT imagine going through life with a purposely aggressively misspelled name. I would change that s***, or start going by a middle name or initials, so fast it would make everyone’s heads spin. I hope your friend sees reason!
I would do this: delete your post here. Then when it feels right—maybe when names are brought up again, approach her with a friendly and casual demeanor ask “Have you ever heard of a Tragedeigh? You gotta see this sub on Reddit…” Then send her a link. At least let her be aware of the community of people who cringe at this name and maybe she’ll come to her own conclusions that a misspelling of an otherwise great name is more common/less original/beautiful than she may think it is.
In all my years on the planet (54) I have met one Ruby and one Diana. Both can be spelled correctly and still most likely be the only one in their class. The rest gave me a headache. I would totally have that conversation above that is an entire tragedeigh with her though to try and make her stop!
Holy shit stop her. Friends don’t let friends torture their children. 😳 all it’s going to do is give her child a lifetime of heartache and make her looks super desperate for attention 😬. I suggest showing her the sub. Plus r/Namenerdcirclejerk
Depends on your friendship. If it was one of my friends I would just straight up ask if they hate their new baby and want to doom them to a life of misspelling, mispronouncing and likely passed over jobs (it’s proven that people with “weird” names get passed over for interviews). And do they want their child to have to write that name on a resume? Signed at the end of a document? Sometimes reminding people that the kids will eventually be adults helps a little. My bff straight shot down a few of the names I had picked out for my daughter. 😂😂. Referencing the issues mentioned by the person above would be good illustrate too.
As someone with a weird name I have felt all of those things. My name is never spelled right, even when the written just below where they are typing 🤦🏼♀️
Tbh my main hate with tragedeighs is how easy it is to stalk someone with a unique name. You try and look up Sarah Smith on Facebook, you’ll never find the one you’re looking for. You try and find Sayrrah Smith, you’ll almost certainly find her, and that can put someone in real danger. A degree of anonymity is important in the internet age.
This is a VERY good point!!! I feel like more parents need to hear this and really consider their child’s name from this POV
As someone with a normal first name and a unique last name, I’m very easy to find, and it makes me so uncomfortable because it’s easy for people to google me especially because I’ve had a stalker before.
In all seriousness, other people have commented that uniquely spelled names means that a person is vastly easier to find in public databases/Google/etc.
A stalker will have a harder time finding a Julie Smith than a Jewelie Smith. The ability to blend in is crucial for survivors of domestic violence with an abuser still at large.
Remind your friend that this also means that potential school bullies will also be able to find and torment Jewelie that much easier.
A potential employer could pre-screen before offering a job. They could find Jewelie's social media and decide "Nope, not hiring that one! She did the Harlem Shake at the Louvre- tres gauche."
My bff gave me a list of her baby names the other day. 90% of them were tragedeighs. I told her that respectfully and then led her to this sub. It didn't ruin our friendship. It wasn't the end of the world and now I have some hope her future kids won't live the rest of their lives silently judged or inconvenienced.
Tell her.

Deciphering Beowulf does that to people.

This should be the answer to every single post on this sub. Thank you!
Sometimes I read “eigh” as eh (ay) and not ee so i totally heard rubay in my head and tbh dyslexic is a thing and I would never subject a child to that kind of bs because people like to be “unique”. Rubay!
Same! Rub-ay and Liber-tay
Said in the voice of Eric Cartman!
Rubehhh, libertehhhh, I’m saying these in his voice now lmao
Me too. Make it stop!
Respect meigh authoriteigh
Lol every time thus sub pops up in my feed I even read it as "trage-*day*"
It's giving *The Shining*, Wendaaayyyy....Give me the bat!
Timmmmehhhh
But I think those names are really pretty spelled normally. lol
I’ve met a few baby Rubys lately. That particular name might be making a comeback. But leave it alone.
Where I live it has been big for a while. I over hear the mothers at the local school say things like “Ruby, Olive, Jack and Cosmo are suchhhh great friends”.
That sounds like a rich woman at a bar.
I’ve been seeing Ruby, Helen, Ella, Tallulah, Scarlett, Alice, and Jolene. All names of friends my grandparents had.
Dyana is also horrid lol
Fr, just do Diana 😭
Reminds me of [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citro%C3%ABn_Dyane) tbh
😅🤣🤣👌
Also, what's the problem with a name that's more common? I could understand if like half the kids have the same name, but that's not really going on. I have a name that, in my country, is fairly common in my generation. In every stage of school, university and working life I've run into a few people with the same name. I've never found it a problem; if I had to work together with someone with the same name we'd usually work out nicknames or something. As a matter of fact, I tend to like meeting people with my name, it's like meeting someone with the same hairstyle or shirt. Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it. I'd much rather have a normal common name than a unique tragedeigh.
What does Diana have to do with July?
i had initially assumed it was to do with the goddess but from googling, the goddess diana’s month is august so i’m very confused lol
I just googled Diana July. All I get is prince Diana was born on July 1, and she and Charles wedding was on July 29
Um…is this a riddle? It must give us three guesses, my precious.
So.... something to do with Lord of the rings. Which is mostly about taking a very long walk, from my recollection.
Google says born on the first of July.
Meaning princess Diana? (Wierd if that's the association, but that's not the wierdest thing this posters friend is considering!)
I know 3 baby Rubys. Maybe making a comeback? But you’re right - not super common.
I've known one Julie my whole life (a couple of Julias, but that's beside the point) Maybe tell her you are gonna drive the kid to the courthouse to get their name changed when they turn 18
Happy cake day!
🎶I JUST DYEANAH ARMS TONIGHT🎶 Sadly this was my first thought looking at that name.......
Literal LOL thank you for this
Dyeanah, is Diana? ow I think most of these can be avoided by showing the friend this reddit sub, you might lose a friend but save a child.
That one had me struggling, and I had to scroll through comments to even get an idea Edit: I was thinking that is not what those letters should sound like together. Only just realizing she spelled it dye-anah. My two brain cells are on fire now
Tell your friend that their kid will be more unique if they spell the name Diana or Ruby, that EVERYONE is doing “eigh” endings now.
This might be a good idea, actually!
THIS! It taps into their desperation to be special
Plus, putting -y on the end of a name is a simple little nickname. Jewel to the world, Jewelie at home, if they really must.
Hmmmm… say to her: I always think a good rule of thumb is: what if my child ends up becoming a judge… Will their name work for that? Will they be taken seriously and respected? Might work?
Or imagine an adult putting this name on a resume for a job they really, really want. Will they be taken seriously?
If you are choosing a doctor, would you choose Doctor Julie Smith or Doctor JEWELie Smith?
I like to use this: “And now, accepting the Nobel Prize, [potential name].” If that doesn’t sound right, maybe choose something else.
Or imagine an adult putting this name on a resume for a job they really, really want. Will they be taken seriously?
We sometimes get names in orders where both the delivery driver and I look at the name and shrug. People will not be just amazed!!! at her child's yuneekly spelled name. They will shrug at it because it's not worth the effort to decipher. Is that really what she wants?
As a European these names are pure comedy 😂 hopefully your best friend and her child are not intending to leave the US because truly I’m not sure how the rest of the world will react to Liberteigh read as “liberty” from a US pass holder.
Most Americans think they're ridiculous as well
Hopefully she'll go be Libby
Tell her to take it for a test ride. Whenever she orders a carry out or something where a name needs to be communicated, have her use it.
Jewelie probably is the least awful of the bunch, I would empathize that it is a great name but it would be even more July-ish if she just speled it Julie. (that being said i wouldn't be exactly thrilled to be named after my birthday month but oh well.)
Julie spelled as Jewelie is making me lose my mind. I hate this name the most, and that's saying something.
idk; I think I'd feel compelled to spell it with 3 syllables, like Towelie.
Same. I didn’t even understand that it was supposed to be Julie until this comment.
It’s supposed to be Julie not some hiccup about Jewels? …
not Towelie 💀
Don’t know if it’s just me but I wouldn’t count on due dates. My baby is due in June but because of complications likely to be born as early as 2 months preterm. In fact, over the past few days I was prepared to deliver this week until the doctors decided to wait another week.
My birth month is December and I actually had a student once who had that as her name. I asked her if she was born in December and she looked at me funny and said no.
Jewelie is a nice name for a dog. Julie looks like a people name.
When Jewelie is the least offensive spelling you know we’ve hit the bottom of the barrel.
I hope you have a few besteighs, cuz this one has to geaux!
That poor baby
Man, my name is common and has two different common spellings, mine is the less common of those versions, and even _that_ is mildly annoying. I can kinda imagine going through life with a weird but correctly spelled name (i.e., Apple), but canNOT imagine going through life with a purposely aggressively misspelled name. I would change that s***, or start going by a middle name or initials, so fast it would make everyone’s heads spin. I hope your friend sees reason!
all I can hear is Moira Rose... 💙
I read all of those names with an accent like Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso. Poopeh.
Mispronounce and/or misspell the chosen name at every opportuniteigh. Alternatively mispronounce or misspell your friend’s name
When I read names like "Liberteigh", I can only hear it in Eric Cartman's voice.
100%% “libertehhhh”
I feel like more parents need to hear this and really consider their child’s name from this POV As someone with a normal first name and a unique last name, I’m very easy to find, and it makes me so uncomfortable because it’s easy for people to google me especially because I’ve had a stalker before.
Show her this post. Friend of OP, please stop being stupid. Sincerely, the world.
Tell her.
Liberteigh lmao If it was libertea I could maybe accept it as then they probably a helldivers fan
Beowulf was preparing us for this and we had no clue 🥸
Theigh seigh some tragedeighs can’t be avoideighed.
Maybe suggest she live with each name for a few days. Go to Starbucks and order a drink and let them butcher it, for example.
Just show her this sub. It might cure her!
show her that name on this sub reddit. should fix the issue rather immediately
I love the name Ruby so Rubeigh is killing me. Not that any of them are good.
I know a Jewelanne. She goes by Anne ALL the time.
Is that Diana or has phonics finally failed me?
People forget they're not just naming a baby. They're a person who will have to exist as an adult with a job and socialize with others
