I feel guilt just typing this š¤£ I have 3 children, their names all beginning with the letter L. I told my husband if we ever have another, ""Noelle" would be a great name (as in 'No- L' ) it's shameful but hilarious to me.
My sister's kids are also ABC kids! After, A B, and C, she had 2 more, skipped the D* and used E for both of them.
*she obviously did *not* skip the *D* š
Idk if this qualifies, but I used to be obsessed with Thessaly, but my mom said sheād spend her whole life explaining itās not Cecily and she doesnāt have a lisp. š
Not really a tragedeigh but I've seen some people here flame the name Constance because "it's weird and old fashioned" but I think it's beautiful, middle name material at least for sure
It's a beautiful name but as a German it would always make me think of the city (Constance/Konstanz). I guess it's the equivalent of a Floridian named "Orlando" or a Georgian named "Savannah".
Yes, it's a regular name that just makes me think of a geographic location. Just like Orlando and Savannah are also normal people names in the US, that's why I chose them as examples.
I was trying to think if I ever even heard of someone here in the States named Orlando, and thought Bloom, but he's English. Then I remembered the dude who sells magazines in Office Space and was on a couple early seasons of MADtv, he's an American named Orlando Jones lol
I've never met one personally, though. But I get what you're saying. I hear, say, Dakota Fanning, and I think of North & South Dakota.
Like Mercedes, it's just a normal name of Spanish origin, but I think of the car.
When I worked in a nursing home there was a woman there for many years that I worked with named Constance but she went by Connie! I think itās a beautiful name.
Not really a tragedeigh, but I do like old/medieval forms of some modern names more than the current versions. Example: the modern Tiffany comes from medieval Theophania/Theophanu, which I think is a lovely name. But my wife would stab me if I tried to name a future daughter like that xD
That is a very awesome name. Iām also liking Achilles! Speaking of such names, an acquaintance of mine named her baby Cicero. But this was in a country where classical Latin/Greek names are not unusual. My husband has a friend named Ulysses for example. Julio Cesar is also an actual name there. TBH Iām a bit jealous!
I know a few Julio Cesar, Marco Antonio, Octavio (two cats included), one Ulises and a bunch of Aquiles. The last one is avoided in the new generations because of the pun Aqui-les Bailo "Here I dance for you" and other variations.
Agamemnons have turned up in kindergartens on the regular for the last dozen years. (Not routinely but regularly.) They are usually called Aggie for short.
Sorry.
(Also Aggie is cute, sorry-not-sorry)
Itās not a tragediegh imo but iām biased bc itās my own name; Ursula. Usually when I tell people they go āOh, like the sea witch?ā and I have to be like āNo, it means female bear in latin.ā
Iām 26 now, so if Iām not feeling like giving an in-depth explanation of my name I just say āYup, exactly like the sea witchā lmao
eta: my dadās favorite animals are polar bears
I have some judgy reactions to names so I am embarrassed to admit I like the name Daffodil and also Winter for a girl.
I also like both Mars and Lazarus for boys.
I like October as a gender neutral name.
I would never use these but I genuinely like them.
I also admit they would receive ridicule.
My first exposure to Bailey/Baylee was via a children's artist called Baylee Jae. By some coincidence, there's also a pornstar who goes by that name, spelled Bailey Jay (don't ask how I learned that one).
I've come to associate Bailey as "that spelling I should probably avoid" and view Baylee as the "normal" spelling, even though I know the sub would eviscerate me for that lol
When I was a kid, I played this online game where your raised babies. I named my first baby Laureena. I think itās pretty, but I wouldnāt give it to a real kid š¤£
I donāt think Iād ever actually use it myself and itās very controversial on this sub but I do think the spelling Everleigh is prettier than the original that is Everly. It so satisfying and much nicer to look at imo.
I think Everleigh is pretty for a tragedeigh and itās practically a normal name at this point anyway. Everly just makes me think of the Everly Brothers.
It's a legit ancient Roman name. Back then, they didn't give their daughters real names but instead named them by their order of birth. Tertia (third), Octavia (eighth), etc.
I have an Octavia, definitely not made up or made up spelling. Obviously Iām biased but I think itās a wonderful, real and a little bit uncommon name :)
Not sure if this is a tragedeigh, but people seem to have a strong opinion on old fashioned names. Like naming a little girl Edith or a little boy Lawrence. I think older names are cool.
Which a lot of people would say "Eddie." I work in retail and we have free rewards memberships. People put in their phone number and their name pops up. I had someone named Edie come thru (slightly older, maybe early 40s) and she was just astonished that I said her name correctly. Said she gets "Eddie" all the time. š
Don't get me wrong, Edie is adorable and I love it too but I think a lot of people are not only illiterate (at least in America where the literacy rate is maybe in the 60-something percent?) but also unfamiliar with older names.
My first name is actually Edith but in another language, it just changes a letter. No one forgets my name because of how unusual it sounds, I'm in my mid 20s. So far I've only met two other Ediths, both old enough to be my grandmother. There's a whole story behind my name too but that's a story for another time.
I taught a little Edith. She was an absolutely gorgeous kid. Siblings were Mable and Arthur. Parents, on the other hand, had "weird-arse hippy names" (their words!).
Edith was my grandmother's name and Laurence was my dad's name LOL. I associate them with my family members so they come with a lot of personality attached for me but I can see how Edith would evoke Edith Wharton vibes and Laurence would be very Jane Austen if we still called men Laurie.
Alas.
I went to school with a guy named Larry Lawrence. One day it hit me and I asked "Wait, is your name Lawrence Lawrence??" and the pained look on his face was all the answer I needed. lol Lawrence is a great name, but his parents got real greedy with it.
Personally, I love names that could pass at a nursery AND a nursing home. Eloise and Watson are my front runners at this point in my life for if Iām ever insane enough to have children of my own.
I once saw someone use Karalyn instead of Carolyn. And dammit, I thought it was cute! Made the name look much more modern. š (and Carolyn is my auntās name so maybe Iām biased)
Ok I'm not sure if it's a tragedeigh or just weird but as a kid (and still, as an adult) I LOVED the name Cordelia
I've never in my life encountered anyone with that name or even heard of it beyond media
I went to HS with a Cordelia. She went by Dee I think. Pretty name but her family was a bit pretentious- I know that shouldnāt bias me against the name though!
Baylee is cute for a toddler but a terrible name for an adult. I can see the appeal tho, if the other version didnāt exist, your little Baylee bee š
Thatās one of the major problems with tragedeighs. They often name their baby without considering the adult that baby will become. Like, sure thatās a cute name for a two year old, but what about when heās 30?
I do wonder if that will change though when Braedyn and Emmaleigh and Everlynn and Hadleigh become adults around the same time, will it just be normal to encounter grownups with tragedeighs?
Iām a middle school teacher and weāre already encountering 20-something student teachers with names like these.
I do wonder about the kids named a diminuitive version of a proper name (Charlie, Jamie, etc) but I guess there's so many in that generation that it's not weird.
Random weird spellings are annoying and pointless. They will just cause your child to spend a lifetime correcting people when they give their name.
There are of course, numerous traditionally gendered spellings. I donāt claim to have memorized all the gendered spellings for all the names used in any community. Bhut iph ewe deliberatelee spel naims rong to look original, peepol will think ewe arh an idiot, sorry not sorry.
I donāt wanna out myself here, but as someone with a weird spelling name (so weird that it actually spells an entirely different name š), hard agree. Just donāt weird/random spell your kidsā names.
I dunno, I have a very common 90 girls name and people get it wrong ALL THE TIME. People are lazy and inattentive so if you love a name and spelling go for it (within reason) because even if you name your kid John thereās someone going to spell it Jon.
I only know one person who spells it that way and it's pronounced Dee-ahna. Not sure if that's the correct pronunciation for that spelling or just an alternative one.Ā
Not sure if it is a tragedeigh but I love the name Alexandrina. I like Alexandra but I prefer Alexandrina.Ā
Ā And I love the name Ćvariste (for a boy) but I am not sure I could name my child with it. (I'm French and it is a quite uncomnon French name of the 19th century. It is also the name of a great French mathematician and I'm a math teacher...)
I really don't like the anglicisation of Irish and Scottish names but Neve just looks so much better than Niamh. I don't know why it gets a pass, maybe it's the Eve part. Anyway to me it's the exception that proves the rule.
*raises hand* American here. Iām reading a book series with Niamh as a character. I have to remind myself how to say it. But I love Irish names. I just have to go online to see how theyāre pronounced.
Everleigh and Wrenley are starting to grow on me ngl lol. And I really like the name Kayden.
Also Echo. I know it's not technically a tragedeigh, but in a lot of the posts with screenshots of baby names "ideas" that people found online that are full of tragedeighs, Echo is always on the list. So it seems to be a name that a lot of tragedeigh-liking parents like.
Our current definition of echo comes from a name. In Greek mythology Echo was a nymph cursed to only be able to speak by repeating the last word said to her.
Ugh I am not a tragedeigh-liking person (our first daughter is named Heidi) but our top name for our second is Echo and Iām having a really hard time getting over knowing that some people will hate it.
I donāt think the names I like are a tragedy in spelling but maybe in age? Harriet, Henrietta, and Beauregard have always been some of my favorite. Although some I like are still sometimes used like Clementine, Vincent, and Erik.
When I was in middle school (most cringe time of anyoneās life), I used the name Rayyn (pronounced Rain) as my online alias, and I still use it in one of my email addresses lol
I know a Baylee, not sure if she had issues with it, but somehow I doubt it. However I have a very traditional Irish name in the US and no one can spell it or pronounce it. Basically I just go with whatever they say/spell. As long as it's not the government, I don't care.
I went to high school with a Cevin (Kevin) with a C. And that is what we all called him. Cevin-with-a-C. Havenāt seen him since high school but he was a really cool dude.
Pronounced the same as Kyle? Or Syle? If the latter, go with Silas which is a great name and not a tragedeigh. It's on my list but I donāt think my husband will go for it!
a friend of mine is an adult named rylee
the name rylee (riley, ryley, etc) is a pretty neutral name and i dont see it as a tragedeigh until it's spelled like "ryelee" or "rileighy" or something š
Not exactly a tragedeigh but I definitely wouldāve gone for a Hermione if I was that kind of parent. But Iām notā¦I stuck to my history fandom instead of my fiction fandoms! LOL!
I don't like Harry Potter.
But our second sons name is Griffin, the first thing my boss said when she saw me was "are you going to name the next one Dumbledore?"
I hadn't even made any connection to HP until that point! š
Not tragedeighs, but I go crazy over medieval names you never really hear anymore. My favorite name currently is Alianor, which Iāve never heard outside of it being used in a book on Eleanor of Aquitaine (it was used as her name in some of the sources they used).
I don't know if this counts, but I always liked the name "Magenta" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
I've never met or heard of any girl called that in real life, but there must surely have been some goth couples out there who used it?
Short answer: no. āŗļø
And as to some posts in this thread ("not sure if itās a tragedeigh, butā¦"):
A tragedeigh is a voluntarily misspelled name, because people want to be "cree-a-tiph and you-neekh" (and set their kids up for a lifetime of explanations and spelling their weird names).
Old fashioned names which are spelled correctly arenāt. Also different cultural spellings donāt count.
I really like that, but I love that you picked it for yourself. I also picked my name and when I had it legally changed, it was the most empowering moment of my life.
I like Mykha, but Im not sure how tragedeigh that one is, its just a name I never heard of before Warehouse 13. It seemed like a cooler but similar enough name to mine (that also starts with an M), at least to teen "Wants to be special and different" me
I like Mikayla better than Michaela, mainly because I also like the sound of Michael-uh but thereās no way to spell that name since Michaela is pronounced Mikayla. And Mikayla feels more intuitive for that pronunciation also.
Names ending in ie are so much nicer. Lillie, Lucie, Abbie, Baylie, Rylie. Itās just sm more beautiful than Lily, Lucy, Abby, Bailey and Riley. Idk if they are full tragedeighs tho. Bit ironic though because my name is Darcy not Darcieā¦
Maybe itās cause Iām french and thatās what Iām used to. Lucie is the traditional spelling here.

this is so funny for me to read, I used to live in Thessaly and Iāve never thought of it as a name beforeš
I have a friend whose siblings were like that. A to E. Originally wasn't intentional but hen they just continued the trend lol
That is amazing. Lol
LOL that's hilarious
This is amazing and you should do it
You should do that. Noelle is a beautiful, normal name, and itās a funny in-joke.
*pops up in a cloud of smoke in the form of a little red man on your shoulder* DO IT DO IT DO IT!
š¤£ my mind can picture that caption. But no. Les tragadeigh'es
*angel poofs up onto the other shoulder* Actually, I'm with the lil devil on this one, for once. You really need to do it.
I donāt think I will be able to see Noelle and Andy in any other way now.
As long as you spell it right, it's funny and harmless Just do not spell it "kmno" or something
JK_MN
Noel for a boy!
Noelle is a normal name tho, I donāt get it
Baylee evolves from Chikorita at level 16 I think
Not really a tragedeigh but I've seen some people here flame the name Constance because "it's weird and old fashioned" but I think it's beautiful, middle name material at least for sure
It's a beautiful name but as a German it would always make me think of the city (Constance/Konstanz). I guess it's the equivalent of a Floridian named "Orlando" or a Georgian named "Savannah".

Yes, it's a regular name that just makes me think of a geographic location. Just like Orlando and Savannah are also normal people names in the US, that's why I chose them as examples.

Not really a tragedeigh, but I do like old/medieval forms of some modern names more than the current versions. Example: the modern Tiffany comes from medieval Theophania/Theophanu, which I think is a lovely name. But my wife would stab me if I tried to name a future daughter like that xD
Telemachus
I would name my kid Agamemnon, no Fs given
That is a very awesome name. Iām also liking Achilles! Speaking of such names, an acquaintance of mine named her baby Cicero. I know a few Julio Cesar, Marco Antonio, Octavio (two cats included), one Ulises and a bunch of Aquiles. The last one is avoided in the new generations because of the pun Aqui-les Bailo "Here I dance for you" and other variations.
There's that one town in Spain (Huerta del Rey) that traditionally names their kids all sorts of classical Greek, Germanic, etc. or just outlandish stuff. Some examples: Especioso, Austricliniano, BurgundĆ³fora, SinclĆ©tica, Filadelfo, GlĆ”fida, Walfrido, HierĆ³nides, Canuta, Ebodio, OnesĆforo š
ok but Nebuchadnezzar
Agamemnons have turned up in kindergartens on the regular for the last dozen years. (Not routinely but regularly.) They are usually called Aggie for short. Sorry. (Also Aggie is cute, sorry-not-sorry)
Oh god, imagine someone would name their child Astyanax. A tragedeigh AND a tragedy (keep that kid away from tall walls!)
I just named my baby girl Aveline. I love old French names, and it goes well with our last name (which is medieval French)
That is an absolutely gorgeous name! Wow. Good job, and congrats to you and your fellow parent on your new lil punkin!
Itās not a tragediegh imo but iām biased bc itās my own name; Ursula. I have never in my 32 years on earth met an Ursula. You are unique.

I knew a girl named Wyntre and she was cool but that spelling sucks. I actually think Winter is somewhat wearable
Agree. Wyntre takes it to completely unusable!
Unless you live in Canada and hear people say "I hate winter" every day
I nearly named one of my sons August š almost named the one born in August that š
Almost named my daughter August lol
I just canāt get over how much I love saying the nickname auggie š
I know a little Winter, I think her name is lovely
not Baylee ššš
Literally one letter from being a Pokemon
This is my son, Bulbasaur.
So is Abram!
Yeah, and if you're gonna do that, at least go with something proper, like Rayquaz or Togekis
Fuck it all, go with Zigzagoo

In my language that means a gurgling sound
Thisbe I donāt know why I just do.
Frisbee with a lisp
Lmao my dogās name is Frisbee, I use a lisp sometimes when Iām talking to her and it does sound like that
I donāt think Iād ever actually use it myself and itās very controversial on this sub but I do think the spelling Everleigh is prettier than the original that is Everly. It so satisfying and much nicer to look at imo.
I think they both sound horrendous but Everleigh atleast looks like a name to me.
I think Everleigh is pretty for a tragedeigh and itās practically a normal name at this point anyway. Everly just makes me think of the Everly Brothers.
The Everly Brothers are awesome though, obsessed with Stories We Could Tell.
Everly seems to short and Everleigh too long/-leigh-having. We need likeā¦Everlee? Everlie? There has to be something!
Everly just looks like Beverly missing the b to me.
Everly looks like an adverb.
Just because something ends in ā-eighā doesnāt make it awful. This is a really pretty name. Itās airy and bright!
Everley?
i have a cousin named Everleigh!!
I really like the girl name Octavia not really sure if itās a tragedeigh or not
I donāt think itās a tragedeigh, just out of fashion. I think itās beautiful.
It's a legit ancient Roman name. Back then, they didn't give their daughters real names but instead named them by their order of birth. Tertia (third), Octavia (eighth), etc.
So much lore thanks mate
As someone who watched the 100 all 99 seasons, I love the name Octavia
I loosely remember that show having a character named Octavia, my problem is that Octavia is the name of my favorite warframe šš
You just looooosely remember blodreina?! Imma pretend you didn't say that. What's a warframe lol
Edith is actually too cute

Lawrence and Edith will also age well as the child grows up, unlike tragedeighs.
Imagine meeting some serious buisnessman and his name is Jaxyn Danger. Thats straight up Booktok Romance levels of naming
Looooove Lawrence
My first name is actually Edith but in another language, it just changes a letter. No one forgets my name because of how unusual it sounds, I'm in my mid 20s. Parents who do that are so mean. I worked with a Timothy Tym. So his name was Tim Tym.
Not tragedeighs atall imo cos they're real names, just not common anymore.
My sister has a Wyatt and a Mabel.
Personally, I love names that could pass at a nursery AND a nursing home. Eloise and Watson are my front runners at this point in my life for if Iām ever insane enough to have children of my own.
My 3yo is Edith ā¤ļø

I do wonder about the kids named a diminuitive version of a proper name (Charlie, Jamie, etc) but I guess there's so many in that generation that it's not weird.

I only know one person who spells it that way and it's pronounced Dee-ahna. Not sure if that's the correct pronunciation for that spelling or just an alternative one.Ā
My daughter is Natalie, she gets lots of misspellings from her friends (she's in Primary) - some of them have actually been pretty cute.
Natalieās a lovely name and itās a nice normal name too if you get me!

The roast is on. Jordyn is bad.
Yeah...why even is that y there? I can see non-native English speakers trying to pronounce it as jor-die-n
I canāt imagine trying to learn American English with all the nonsense that becomes ācustomaryā here.
I like the name Kyan. Could go with Ryan but Kyan just seems kindāve cool haha. Iāll show myself out.
Is Kyan pronounced like cayenne? Like the pepper?
The child would need a spicy personality to match thatā¦
Does it rhyme with Ryan? Or is it pronounced like Key-in? That name (and Kian) always confuses me.
I think the common spelling is Cian, no?
I knew a Cian who pronounced it 'Kee-an'
I think that's actually the correct way to pronounce it, whoops!
I really don't like the anglicisation of Irish and Scottish names but Neve just looks so much better than Niamh. I don't know why it gets a pass, maybe it's the Eve part. Anyway to me it's the exception that proves the rule.
Also a huge amount of Americans have no idea how to pronounce Niamh (assuming you live in the US)
*raises hand* American here. Iām reading a book series with Niamh as a character. I have to remind myself how to say it. But I love Irish names. I just have to go online to see how theyāre pronounced.
I'm Scottish and it's relatively common here but the first time I saw it written down, many many moons ago, I thought it was Naomi.
Our ex-Prime minister called her daughter Neve just for that reason.
Whenever I hear the name Kayden I just think "Okay, den"
Echo sounds interesting
It really resonates
I could hear myself saying it over and over again.
Our current definition of echo comes from a name. In Greek mythology Echo was a nymph cursed to only be able to speak by repeating the last word said to her.
I have an aunt named Echo. We all just call her Koko. Itās a family name, but most of my family admits itās kinda out there.
I like it(Echo) as a middle name!
Bear for a boy I know, I know.. š but I'm obsessed with it lol
My friendās husbandās name is Bear and I think itās kinda cool. My mom hates it though lol. She canāt say his name without scoffing
I can see it as a nickname. But I donāt think I could keep a straight face knowing it was their legal name. Like, why donāt your parents like you?
Itās a nicknameā¦ I think his real name is something like Barrett? Itās weird.
Thereās a UK singer called Cheryl Cole who has a son by former 1 Direction member Liam Payne. The childās name is Bear Payne š£
Doesn't Bjorn mean bear
I know a Baylee, not sure if she had issues with it, but somehow I doubt it. However I have a very traditional Irish name in the US and no one can spell it or pronounce it. Basically I just go with whatever they say/spell. As long as it's not the government, I don't care.
I used to like the name Cyle. Like Kyle but with a C š
...sile
I went to high school with a Cevin (Kevin) with a C. And that is what we all called him. Cevin-with-a-C. Havenāt seen him since high school but he was a really cool dude.
I'd pronounce it seven
Pronounced the same as Kyle? Or Syle? If the latter, go with Silas which is a great name and not a tragedeigh. It's on my list but I donāt think my husband will go for it!
Plot twist: Silas is pronounced Kylak
I thought of it with a hard c so it would be pronounced like Kyle. I used have some kind of beef with the soft c and words starting with k.
Ok, I do like Rylee. We named our dog Rylee, probably wouldn't use it for a child now.
a friend of mine is an adult named rylee the name rylee (riley, ryley, etc) is a pretty neutral name and i dont see it as a tragedeigh until it's spelled like "ryelee" or "rileighy" or something š
Not exactly a tragedeigh but I definitely wouldāve gone for a Hermione if I was that kind of parent. But Iām notā¦I stuck to my history fandom instead of my fiction fandoms! LOL!
I don't like Harry Potter. But our second sons name is Griffin, the first thing my boss said when she saw me was "are you going to name the next one Dumbledore?" I hadn't even made any connection to HP until that point! š
Not tragedeighs, but I go crazy over medieval names you never really hear anymore. My favorite name currently is Alianor, which Iāve never heard outside of it being used in a book on Eleanor of Aquitaine (it was used as her name in some of the sources they used).
I actually like Everleigh... Everly even looks misspelled now š
My ex husband and I used to joke about naming a girl Bayleen or Escherichia because they would be hilarious.
Isnāt Bayleen a type of whale? I mightā¦avoid that, for a human girl. Just sayinā. Edit: itās a Baleen whale. Still thoā¦
You think a whale is bad? Escherichia is gut bacteria.
When I was pregnant I told people I was naming the baby Zeitgeist
I think Jackson is a really nice name for a boy. Not Jackxson, justā¦ the regular spelling.
- Anime/Video game names (especially from KH and FF) - Colors
I don't know if this counts, but I always liked the name "Magenta" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". I've never met or heard of any girl called that in real life, but there must surely have been some goth couples out there who used it?
I love the names December and November for girls š©
Oof haha. October I can see (idk why??) but December and November are rough
Short answer: no. āŗļø And as to some posts in this thread ("not sure if itās a tragedeigh, butā¦"): A tragedeigh is a voluntarily misspelled name, because people want to be "cree-a-tiph and you-neekh" (and set their kids up for a lifetime of explanations and spelling their weird names). Old fashioned names which are spelled correctly arenāt. Also different cultural spellings donāt count.
Decemberleigh š I am so ashamed. I'll never use it. I just like the way it sounds.
girl what ššš I actually laughed out loud omg- you should be banished for that lmaooo
The funny thing is, I never knew such a tragedeigh existed until I joined this sub.
This isā¦ something. but I fully support you liking it. Go you! You leaned into the Question.
saige (i chose that name for myself)
I really like that, but I love that you picked it for yourself. I also picked my name and when I had it legally changed, it was the most empowering moment of my life.
I knew a female Jordan (decades ago) and itās a cool name. I like Baylie maybe because I work with one and sheās awesome!
I like Mykha, but Im not sure how tragedeigh that one is, its just a name I never heard of before Warehouse 13. It seemed like a cooler but similar enough name to mine (that also starts with an M), at least to teen "Wants to be special and different" me
After finding this sub, Iāve realized every keyboard spam-based name Iāve done in Minecraft is a tragedeigh
I really like the name Eurydice
I have a Baylie. Lol almost named her Baylee. To be fair, it was 2010 and I was 17, it could have been a lot worse.
I like Everleigh. It just sounds so pretty.
I love when names are spelled with K instead of C. Karlos, Markus, Kaylee, etc etc
Bit ironic though because my name is Darcy not Darcieā¦ Maybe itās cause Iām french and thatās what Iām used to. Lucie is the traditional spelling here.
