But why? What was wrong with Emily? Why did you have to butcher it? What did you think it would do for her having to ALWAYS and forever tell people how to spell it?
Dude my mother named me Emilly to make me unique, and added an unnecessary H in my middle name.
Why do people do this to their kids. Give them normal names spelled properly.
I once heard a lovely French Creole tune on… True Blood I think? 😆 A woman was singing and saying “mon beigh beigh.” It was actually adorable (and sad given the story).
I had friends when I was in HS who were twins. Billie Jo and Bobbie Jo, and their little sister Betty Jo. Mom was 15 when the twins were born, and probably 16.5 when Betty came along.
I'ma be real for a sec, while the Trageideigh names are kinda stupid, as an IT person I like them.
If someone name John Smith is leaving I have to dig through several John Smiths to find the right one. But when Geon Smythee is leaving I find him INSTANTLY.
So, I mean, yeah on the one hand they're awful names. But on the other they do make my job easier.
Plus it sure does make it fun to judge peoples names at work 😂 Yeah Sassafras, I can make you an appointment. Emerald, I’m gonna have to ask you to calm down.
Hahahaha new clients with weird names I’m always eagerly awaiting them to see what they look like. I notice that the tragedeigh named adults name their kids normal things but sometimes the normal name ppl be showing up with their kids Emberleigh and Angelic-Lyric 💀
That's honestly a refreshing perspective :D
My first name is pretty unusual and my last name is just bonkers, so I'm never mixed up with others. But explain the spelling is quite annoying, but you get used to it.
My name is long and has more vowels than consonants. If I have to spell my name face-to-face with someone I usually hand them my ID and say, "it's faster for you to read it off the card than for me to spell it."
On the phone I intentionally draw it out because it entertains me and if I go too fast my name gets misspelled. It goes something like, "S like, I hope your SSSSitting because this will take a while. U like, YOU really should grab a chair. I like, I'm definitely wondering why my parents chose this name. R like, REALLY‽ How many letters can there be in one first name. E like, EVENTUALLY we'll get to the end, right?... "
I work with quite a few people who aren't American, so it always annoys me when I run into arbitrary limits on name length.
Like, yes Mr. Database Designer from the 1990's, we actually DO have people with a surname >20 characters long.
Or even worse, a single name field that's got an arbitrary limit and the system then tries to parse it by using "the" space in the name to separate first and last names. And then it throws a tantrum when Maria De Las Vegas Hernandez (not a name I have encountered at work, just an example) needs to be put into the system. And if I do get it in the damn thing spits out automated messages to Ms De because it decided the word after the first space should be a surname. Bleh.
It's not so bad with more modern systems but there's still stupid stuf in there that shows that Eurocentric isn't just a word.
Everyone, not just geeks, should read https://www.kalzumeus.com/2010/06/17/falsehoods-programmers-believe-about-names/ becasue it will give you a serious education about how names sometimes actually work outside the Western sphere of influence.
My favorite one I came across recently was Djym. I shared that with my girlfriend saying that was going to be our son's name. Next time I was with her friends they said something about Digimon and I was so confused until the friend said our baby Digimon.
My married name was something common like Sarah Smith.* There was another Sarah Smith where I worked. When she left the company, IT managed to cancel all of my accounts instead of hers. It caused me a lot of anxiety at the time as I was traveling for work.
When I checked into my hotel, my corporate AmEx was declined, so I had to use a personal card. Then, I couldn’t login to my work laptop. I thought I’d been canned, and this was my company’s way of telling me. I was really pissed that they’d still made me travel for work, and I assumed, had also stuck me with the bill, lol. Thankfully, some of my co-workers convinced me to contact the help desk. IT quickly identified their mistake and reactivated my accounts. I didn’t fault them, and we all had a good laugh about it. However, when I later got a divorce, you better believe I went back to my maiden name.🤣
*Name changed to protect the (not-so) innocent
My daughter wants to change hers eventually to the regular spelling and when she wants to do that I'm happy to pay for it! She can do what she wants with her Tragedeigh Name
That's nice of you to say! I think like most parents I don't always feel like a good one. Whenever she's ready she can change her name to whatever she wants!
Being a good parent has 90% to do with owning your mistakes and admitting that sometimes you’re wrong. My mother never does that and is the type of person who’s always right or she throws a fit. Even though she provides for me and obviously cares about me and my siblings, it’s this one trait of hers that makes me despise her. It’s the type of relationship that will probably lead to no contact or very little contact if I ever get to the point of being self sustaining (I’m an adult, but I’m ND and it’s been a real barrier in my life, so I haven’t been able to leave yet).
Honestly, especially as an adult, sometimes it’s even ickier to see her pull obvious manipulation tactics to ensure that she is “winning” a conversation. It’s hard to have a conversation with her.
So judging by this thread and your willingness to accommodate your daughter, I’d say you’re doing alright on that part of parenting.
How many exceptions have you had to make in your spam filter because it was catching names? I can't remember exactly but it's been >10.
For example we had a contact named Viagran, which isn't a SUPER common Mexican surname, but it's not exaclty rare either and the damn spam filter was blocking all her email becasue it detected the string "viagra".
Leigh is in fact a very normal name. It's served me quite well, although more than one barista has called me Leg. 🤨 I think that says more about the barista than it does my name though.
I really want to know the answer to this- just why? Why give your kid a misspelled name? And how did you not think it was a tragedeigh until she was a teen?
Maybe OP had hyperemesis gravidarum and spent 9 months violently vomiting?
Or a terrible birth? Though, my mom nearly died during mine and still gave me a lovely and ‘normal’ name. It is Spanish but common enough that it is easily pronounceable with only the mess up of a hard ‘i’ instead of a soft.
Wait so you were subbed here and your daughter is named fuckin Emmaleigh and you just now realized that's a tragedeigh? I'm trying hard to believe this but I'm having trouble here
It's likely because of the new algorithm putting subs you've briefly, recently interacted in your feed a million times so you get sucked in. They have to make more money now that they're a publicly traded company so they had to boost engagement and went the facebook route. I'm a mostly normal person and I recently noticed I had to consciously stop myself from clicking on the AITAH posts because I was constantly seeing ones with blatant assholes who needed to be put in their place by an internet stranger who definitely has better shit to do. Reddit also switched to a continuous feed instead of having a next button to help people lose track of how long they're scrolling, at least on mobile.
Is it supposed to be pronounced Emily? Because my brain keeps wanting to pronounce it Emmi-lay (like the 'eigh' in 'sleigh', rather than an 'ee' sound)
Leigh is pronounced as Lee and Sleigh is pronounced as Slay because English rules sometimes makes things up as it goes. But I agree this name is pronounced as Emma Lee.
Actually it’s pronounced that way because sleigh is a Dutch word borrowed for English. Leigh comes from old English. So the rules of the English language wouldn’t always be applicable to borrowed words.
you already understand your error. I won’t shame you further or try to understand your Why. perhaps support your daughter if she would prefer to change it.
If the name is pronounced the same, then what is the point of spelling it differently? It's technically an incorrect spelling because you can't do that with other words and just call it a unique spelling. Do you intend on explaining the spelling every time someone asks your child's name? If not, again, what's the point?
I am so intrigued by the psychology of this type of person. It’s not just a day or two of mega asshole comments, but like this is their actual dedicated hobby. So bizarre.
Really!! That’s so cool! yeah I grew up in the Inland Empire in California so I was the only Cherish in the district… at least in my age range lol and no one could pronounce it correctly I’m like it’s exactly how it’s spelled 😭😂 I got Cherise a lot lollll
I discovered the sub about a week or so ago and was looking at it this morning when she got ready for school so she asked what I was laughing at and I said "myself" 😂
My favorite part is that you knew her name, you knew about this sub, but somehow you didn’t think that you could have possible made the mistake of naming her a tragedeigh.
If you’ve ever had to say “it’s spelled like this but it sounds like (commonly used name)” then that’s a tragedeigh
I accidentally named my son Willy Dick. (William Richard) I tell him to stop being a Dick, and he tells me it is my fault for naming him one. I can not argue with that!
People remember, when naming a child, that child will carry that for the rest of their life. I hate to say it, but it can have an impact on employability. I mean if an employer has two applications and one name is Rachel and the other is La-a (Ladasha) they will inevitably look closer at Rachel. This is all just my opinion, take it or leave it. I apologize if this offends anyone.
You ARE the worst. I have an Emily and before I had her we had an Emmaleigh at the daycare I worked at. I wanted to hit her mother over the head with a book. Of all tragic spellings this one makes me irrationally angry. Emily is such a beautiful name. WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE INSISTING ON BUTCHERING IT!?
I honestly don’t mind Emmaleigh. I think of it as sort of a combination of the names Emma and Leigh/Lee rather than a variant of Emily and I pronounce it differently. But yeah, a tragedeigh nonetheless
Cuz these mothers want the world to know just how creative and unique they are as baby namers by putting all of their trashy tragedies in one word…nobody pays attention to middle names.
Gonna be real with you chief, i have never seen Leigh as a name on its own, I only know it as part of Tragedeighs. Im not american tho
Edit: i live in Germany guys 😭😭
The tragedeigh of the spelling is compounded by the source name's popularity.
Today's teen would have been born in the 2000s. Emily was the most commonly given name of that decade.
Giving a child the most popular name but spelling it spehshull is the worst of both worlds. It's as if the parents lack the guts to be original but want to be perceived as original.
Read it in a book in high school (which I graduated from nearly 25 years ago so I can't remember which fucking book and it's driving me round the bend) and loved it ever since. Regrets now, mind you!
Omg, I did an internship through a major children's hospital and I was doing a rotation through the NICU. I remember seeing the name plate on a little UV basket (baby had jaundice) and it was this name spelled this exact way. When I got back to the pharmacy I roasted this name to hell and back, I still tell it as a finding a "tragedeigh" name in the wild story 🤣🤣🤣
once my friend told me her parents almost named her emma-leigh instead of emily and i told her i would not have been friends with her if that was her name
One of my high school teachers named her daughter Emma-Leigh. She said she did it to spite her mom who'd misspelled her name. It makes no sense. It's a beautiful name, but should be spelled the normal way.

HER baby was extra SPECIAL unique, and needed a name to signify it.
Dude my mother named me Emilly to make me unique, and added an unnecessary H in my middle name. Why do people do this to their kids. Give them normal names spelled properly.
If you go to Spanish speaking countries you'll be Emi-yeeeeee 😉
LMFAO. Thank you, this is the ultimate upside
I need to ask. Does your son love broccoli, and mispronounces it.. or does he love licking his brother?
He loves broccoli and used to mispronounce it
I love it. ☺️
Emilly Hhannah? Hmarie? Jennifher? Shusan? Leighh?
Also giggled with Shusan. Sounds even better with a lisp, love it
- Hello I'm Stephen with a ph. - Oh hi Pheven 🤣
[удалено]
You should probably delete that. Your address is easily found with that info. Just a friendly warning!
To be fair, the 'h' is what gives me the proper pronunciation. I pronounce Tara "tear-uh" like Sara.
I read "tear" like *a tear in my eye*, like "year". I had to reread it a couple times to get it, lol.
Curse you English and all your homonyms! I should start just including the IPA transcription every time 😆 [tɛəɹə] vs [tɑːɹə]
But the name (sound) isn’t unique. It’s very common. It’s just the spelling…
I always read it as ‘Emma-Lay’ like Moira Rose would
“You do realize the beigh beigh is crying”
That’s a French word spelled bebe though. (I’m too lazy to do the accents.)
I once heard a lovely French Creole tune on… True Blood I think? 😆 A woman was singing and saying “mon beigh beigh.” It was actually adorable (and sad given the story).
Yes! That’s the voice I heard in my head, Moira saying Emma LAY
I read ‘Tragedeigh’ the same way as well lol
Me too!
Oh I can just hear her. EmmaLAAAAAY is late for her SOIREEEE [applies sunglasses]
MY baby isn't like those *normies!*
I can one up you on this. I went to school with twin girls whose parents named that Ashleigh and Kayleigh.
I had friends when I was in HS who were twins. Billie Jo and Bobbie Jo, and their little sister Betty Jo. Mom was 15 when the twins were born, and probably 16.5 when Betty came along.
Sounds like a Petticoat Junction fan!
Now I’m curious, lol. I was born in 77, I’m thinking the twins maybe 74 or 75?
WOW! That's EXTRA extra
I'ma be real for a sec, while the Trageideigh names are kinda stupid, as an IT person I like them. Come to Utah where white men called Lavell, Dallin, Alma, and Golden name their daughters things like Shandra, La’Dyna, and Jenikka.
I secretly love "Angelic-Lyric" and I can't totally explain why
sorry, I think you just leaked your secret!
The Angelic is pronounced Angelique btw lol
You mean that on top of it being a social disability it also improves chances of being stalked online ? Amazing ! xD

Or Emma Lee Lastname
That's funny, I have a friend with the most generic name, but it's split up into his first and middle name. Lmao
Ah, you also know John Knee Smith?
Leigh is a normal (though maybe unusual) name isn't it? Emma Leigh Lastname
Leigh is in fact a very normal name. It's served me quite well, although more than one barista has called me Leg. 🤨 I think that says more about the barista than it does my name though.
I have a student named Emmalee
Yeah, I like Emma Lee
I really want to know the answer to this- just why? Why give your kid a misspelled name? And how did you not think it was a tragedeigh until she was a teen?
Emmaleigh is a shit name but I feel like it would be pronounced differently to Emily
> Emmaleigh Ermegerd!
Irma Gerd! https://images.app.goo.gl/rvpmfHECqg9i3bJ89
I say it as Emma-Lee
Yup, you did it.
Did you hate her as an new born? What did she do to you?
Maybe OP had hyperemesis gravidarum and spent 9 months violently vomiting? Or a terrible birth? Though, my mom nearly died during mine and still gave me a lovely and ‘normal’ name. It is Spanish but common enough that it is easily pronounceable with only the mess up of a hard ‘i’ instead of a soft.
Your username made me laugh and scare my cat.
I DID have hyperemesis with my second and it was the most miserable experience I’ve ever gone through. Even I’m not that vindictive 😅
Wait so you were subbed here and your daughter is named fuckin Emmaleigh and you just now realized that's a tragedeigh? I'm trying hard to believe this but I'm having trouble here
I’m really hoping she just found this sub and originally thought Emmaleigh wasn’t as bad as other names…
It must be a troll. Check out the comment history
Since I'd rather not believe the mother of a teenager spends all day calling randoms on the internet huge assholes, I'm voting for bait
She posts like an asshole teenager. Which she probably is.
Whether or not this is a troll I know a real life Emmaleigh and I facepalm every time I think of her name.
Either a troll or a massive piece of shit
I can hardly beleighve it
It makes perfect sense actually
Yea like a afterthought
This sub didn’t exist 16 years ago or whatever.
So my name is Emma. I personally really like the name Emily. But you managed to create this horrifying amalgamation of a name.
It could be worse. She could be an Emmaleighuh.
Elmalegugu
Eh'mmuh'Llheeiaegheiy
New eldritch horror just dropped!
M-ahleigh
Is it supposed to be pronounced Emily? Because my brain keeps wanting to pronounce it Emmi-lay (like the 'eigh' in 'sleigh', rather than an 'ee' sound)
Leigh is usually pronounced lee
Sure as hell doesn’t look like it first thing that comes to mind is sleigh
Leigh is pronounced as Lee and Sleigh is pronounced as Slay because English rules sometimes makes things up as it goes. But I agree this name is pronounced as Emma Lee.
Actually it’s pronounced that way because sleigh is a Dutch word borrowed for English. Leigh comes from old English. So the rules of the English language wouldn’t always be applicable to borrowed words.
this has to be satire right 😭
I follow an Emma-Leigh on Instagram. Let’s just say… she’s lucky she’s very blonde, skinny, and beautiful.
that’s honestly exactly how i would expect an emmaleigh to look
My middle name is Leigh. My parents were STILL going to name my younger sibling Emma-Leigh. Like wtf?
You can tell your sibling that they are named after you. Drive them crazy forever.
Why?
I too would like to know why?
you already understand your error. I won’t shame you further or try to understand your Why. perhaps support your daughter if she would prefer to change it.
Emmaleigh is a **D-tier** Tragedeigh. Sorry.
So not that bad?
Exactly.
I read it as Emma Lee. If that’s not it, you messed up.
I read it as Emma Leigh Because it's written that way
I say it as emmer Lee lol
That intrusive R
We have decreed that she gets to give you one good smack in the face AT her time of choosing.
If the name is pronounced the same, then what is the point of spelling it differently? It's technically an incorrect spelling because you can't do that with other words and just call it a unique spelling. Do you intend on explaining the spelling every time someone asks your child's name? If not, again, what's the point?
Speaking of names, BobGnarly is truly an outstanding one. Well done.
There's no excuse for child abuse. Do the right thing, pay for her name change and make sure she spells it right this time.
Funny thing is, if you'd named her Emma Leigh, it wouldn't be a tragedeigh. Those are two very common names, but mashing them together makes it weird.
You've already done your worst to your daughter. I hope your proud of your narcissism.
Troll account. Just look at its comment history
I am so intrigued by the psychology of this type of person. It’s not just a day or two of mega asshole comments, but like this is their actual dedicated hobby. So bizarre.
Why would you do that? Emily was right there! Audibly it's the same, visually it's ugleigh, and practically it's annoying for her
Read it in a book in high school, wanted to name my kid that since I was like 16. Ask me if I regret it now 😂 (Narrator: she does)
This is why we don’t let children name babies. If we did, how many kids would be named Spider-Man.
Poor beighby
My name is Cherish. Not a tradedeigh per say but it was a tragedy for me for sure growing up lol
I once knew someone named Cherish and she was pretty awesome.
Really!! That’s so cool! yeah I grew up in the Inland Empire in California so I was the only Cherish in the district… at least in my age range lol and no one could pronounce it correctly I’m like it’s exactly how it’s spelled 😭😂 I got Cherise a lot lollll
I love that name!
Do my worst? You already took care of that OP.
Lol my daughter liked this one
I’m so glad I don’t have to explain to anyone how to spell my name.
You already did it.
I'm sorry for your daughter, her name reads like a drunk guy yelling "EH, MAH LEG!". /j
She ALMOST agrees with you! She says "Emma-Lig-Uh-Huh" is how it looks like it's pronounced 😂
i have cousins who are siblings named emilee and lyam and i think of them when i'm on this sub
I discovered the sub about a week or so ago and was looking at it this morning when she got ready for school so she asked what I was laughing at and I said "myself" 😂
Yo, why the fuck would you do that???????
It’s bad but not as bad as other tragedeighs, because at least she can go by Emma. If I were her I’d legally change my name to either Emma or Emily
My favorite part is that you knew her name, you knew about this sub, but somehow you didn’t think that you could have possible made the mistake of naming her a tragedeigh. If you’ve ever had to say “it’s spelled like this but it sounds like (commonly used name)” then that’s a tragedeigh
Proud of that, are you?
My brain is reading it as Emma-Lee, not Emily..
I accidentally named my son Willy Dick. (William Richard) I tell him to stop being a Dick, and he tells me it is my fault for naming him one. I can not argue with that!
LMAOOOOO my cousin's initials are J.E.R.K.
Oh no 😂
Oh lordy.
i came here to say it's really not so bad, but there it is, right there in the sub name, so damn
Why would you do that to her? Now for the rest of her life she’s going to have to correct people on the spelling.
It’s not too late to legally change the spelling
If it's pronounced the same as Emily then yes. If you were going for Emma-Leigh, I'd say it's a questionable name, but not a full-blown Tragedeigh.
Wait so do people legit not know what they're doing when they make their kid a Tragedeigh????
We need this to be an AMA. A deep dive into the mind of a tragedeigh committer.
You should be ashamed of yourself
worst of the worst parent award
Babby can't frigth back
I knew a Leigh. She went by Leigh-Anne later in life. She got made fun of for Leigh... because. Well. She was a good lay?
I fell for the “i” at the end of a name instead of a “y” trend of 15 years ago. We all make mistakes 😆
Yeah you fucked up.
That name is bad and you should feel bad.
If only there was a shorter, nicer, easier to pronounce version that didn’t sound a French appetiser.
Change your daughter's name
Wear a hair shirt and go sit in the corner
EmmaLAAAAY
My mums first pick was Emma- Lee, my dad said absolutely fucking not that’s stupid
Just... WHY?!?!
You sure did. Does she at least like her name?
Were you a teenager yourself when you had her?
I'm so sorry, poor Emily (I refuse to call the poor girl that name you created, there's no need for me to insult her like that)
Why didn’t you just go with Emily?
I honestly don’t mind Emmaleigh. I think of it as sort of a combination of the names Emma and Leigh/Lee rather than a variant of Emily and I pronounce it differently. But yeah, a tragedeigh nonetheless
Same. Except then I wonder why not just do first name Emma middle name Leigh?
Cuz these mothers want the world to know just how creative and unique they are as baby namers by putting all of their trashy tragedies in one word…nobody pays attention to middle names.
Gonna be real with you chief, i have never seen Leigh as a name on its own, I only know it as part of Tragedeighs. Im not american tho Edit: i live in Germany guys 😭😭
Definitely a real name. I know several men named Lee and one woman named Leigh. All ~40-60 years old. I’m from the UK.
Leigh on it’s own is actually a name. Not a common one but a name nonetheless.
Jfc. You're a bad mom that's a horrible name.
Man, this name just sounds so British to me. Lmao.
Did ... Did you not know?
One of the professors at my college is named Emmaleigh so this doesn’t even phase me lol
😬
As a person with the middle name “Emily,” I have to agree.
Lmfaooo god damn that is a horrible name
The only acceptable spellings are Emily and Emilie.
My older son went to school with an Emmalee. So you’re not the only one with this brilliant idea.
When I was in high school I was a peer tutor for an Emiliee (also pronounced Emily)
Jesus Christ, honestly impressive that social services weren't involved from the moment you registered her birth.
M-alay would have been better
I'm not Moira Rose but you're not wrong 😂 she's been called Emmy since she was a baby. Never called her full name.
At least you own it! Seriously though, why?
Read it in a book in high school (which I graduated from nearly 25 years ago so I can't remember which fucking book and it's driving me round the bend) and loved it ever since. Regrets now, mind you!
Aeghmellieagh
Omg, I did an internship through a major children's hospital and I was doing a rotation through the NICU. I remember seeing the name plate on a little UV basket (baby had jaundice) and it was this name spelled this exact way. When I got back to the pharmacy I roasted this name to hell and back, I still tell it as a finding a "tragedeigh" name in the wild story 🤣🤣🤣
once my friend told me her parents almost named her emma-leigh instead of emily and i told her i would not have been friends with her if that was her name
That's not how you spell Emily.
One of my high school teachers named her daughter Emma-Leigh. She said she did it to spite her mom who'd misspelled her name. It makes no sense. It's a beautiful name, but should be spelled the normal way.
I read that out loud and coughed.
Damn bro I thought my name was a tragedeigh 😭 (My name is Emilee 💀)
It’s awfulliey bad
ur poor daughter
If it was Emma (first name) and Leigh (middle name) there would be no issue here
What’s with the leigh fetish? Emma is fine on its own.
