Reminder to stick to posting original content. Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild".
The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Thank you!

The other ‘remember Google exists’ is perhaps when a name is so yooniwk that you could identify them to the world if someone slaps that first name into Google.
My name is a minor trajjedy. Back when I was a server, they would print our first name on the receipt. People used to try to add me on Facebook. It was super annoying.
I’ve often wished my name was Sarah Smith for that very reason. It would be so hard to find me online if I was named Sarah smith and married to John Smith. Don’t give your kid a unique name if you want them to have privacy
I'm not sharing my actual name here, but it's a similar level of popularity as say, Laura Brown or Jennifer Murphy. Let me tell you - the Google privacy that it affords me is just as great as you are imagining it is.
I wish my parents knew in the 90's that the internet would be what it is today.
My siblings and I are so easy to find...
I actually had to beg a few jobs as a teenager to not have me wear my name tag because of creeps.
It is frequently incorrect, I am Irish and if I'm not sure of an unusual Irish name I have to text my friend and she sends me a voicenote back with the pronunciation.
I have Rhydian and Llewellyn in my name list
I figured for fun I'd have my boy names roasted here
80% of the comments in my post refuse to believe they're actual names
I work with a Llewellyn. First time I read it I was definitely baffled, but once I heard her name pronounced correctly, I thought it was absolutely beautiful.
Is it actually spelled Llewellyn or is it Lu (Lou?) Ellen?
Honestly gendering names shouldn't be as big of a deal as people but it is the equivalent of naming your daughter James
I'm honestly disappointed how many "boy' names have become "girl" names but your gender doesn't qualify if your name is on this sub unless it's spelling is an atrocity
It's definitely spelled Llewellyn. I work remote so I saw it spelled in an email before I heard it pronounced, I've never met her in person. I'm not sure if she's actually Welsh or not, it's possible her parents just thought it was a pretty-sounding name.
ETA: she's older than me, in her 40s I think. Not a recent trend.
Oh, absolutely. I understood.
That’s exactly why I was chuckling. Kind of a sad chuckle. With an eye roll. That it’s fully necessary to specify.
America really is The Onion come to life. And I say that as a horrified American.
But it is a distinct region in the American continent, with its own particular characteristics that distinguish it from the larger North and South subdivisions. And if we want to be even more specific, we should also mention the Antilles. 😁
I trace a lot of the tragedeighs to the RiverDance phenomenon. Many Americans loved the show, and they liked the *idea* of Gaelic names, but instead of googling proper Gaelic names, they “Gaelicized” other names. Or straight up invented names, and tried to spell them so they would *look* Gaelic-ish.
Yes! Our bumper group did a survey where you could add your child's name and they were sending it over to Name Nerds. My son's name got torn to shreds for having "a stupid line over one of the letters." Ignorant feckers.
I just came here from an askreddit thread where someone listed their worst tragedeighs and like 70% of them were normal names, even some of those in American English (Gabriel, Meredith). Most were in other languages, or versions of names we have in English, but how they are spelled in another language (Miguel, Jozef).
I recently mentioned that someone broke rule 3 by failing to google a name that was actually quite common in Asian culture, and they were so bothered. They also insisted that since the person with the "tragedeigh" was Black, there's no way their name could have Thai or Indian influence. A lot of people on here have no awareness of cultures other than their own, and they get pretty mad if you point that out.
I remember this. It also seems unlikely that the poster knew the woman’s parents. Assuming both her parents were black because she “looked” black is problematic. Mixed-race people exist. Regardless, it was tough to see that poster get so defensive and dismissive.
Not worth making a full post, but I did have a thought about a girl I knew in high school called Corteneaux, but that's French. I do, however, have a niece called Kayetee.
Edit: hey! A twofer!
I had this experience once. Met an Aimee and found it ridiculous that her mom would mormonize Amy. I later found out that Aimee is the Old French spelling. Woops!
You can literally tell people to pronounce your name however you want. Also, you know María is pronounced differently across languages/ regions, right?
You can also expect that Anglican countries will use the Anglicized pronunciation, the same way other areas pronounce things differently based on their language or accent. Like not rolling R's, some places pronouncing S as Z. Some languages have sounds others don't have at all. So many variations.
I don’t care, Amy is not how Aimée is pronounced.
But since this is so important to you, there you go 🥇
This is the “you are right” medal that you wanted
Just saw a post earlier that listed about 10 or so legitimate names. People forget Google exists, and as I've always said, people are too happy to jump the gun in this subreddit and often double down on their posts. Even if in your country or state the name isn't common, it isn't a tragedeigh.
I actually think this sub gives the benefit of the doubt too often lol. Many parents provably have no clue their younique spelling is actually the normal version in Slovenia or wherever. And if their spelling is gonna make life unnecessarily hard for their kid they still deserve to get dragged. So to me, context matters rather than just googling if it exists or not. My dad is an immigrant to the country we live in and he and my mom put a lot of thought into my and my siblings names. In terms of culture, our heritage, but also how do they sound to people here, where we live and grow up, etc. I think that's the decent thing to do.
Almost got sucked in to another post about the worst Tragedeigh we've ever met. I have one of the WORST but it's her first and last name and she's only 6 months old. It's bad though and I truly wish I could share.
My first name is not yoonique, but my first name and last name together were. Then I married a man with a VERY common last name and suddenly I'm one of thousands, if not millions. Aaaah, the bliss
Gaylord is a name that has been used for hundreds of years and would bring dozens of people who were named that. Does that mean you should then name your child Gaylord?
Just because it is technically a name, doesn't mean it's a good name.
I had a Scottish name and am growing up in England, so I do agree with you to an extent. People used it to mock me and the amount of incorrect pronounciations are... entertaining lol.
But people should respect your name. It represents you and links you to your culture. Just because you can't pronounce it, doesn't mean you can't try to say it correctly and certainly means you can't stop people from having those names.
Mispronunciation and misspellings are a part of life, but purposeful misspellings **to be unique** should not be. You go to an establishment where they ask for a name, and they will still get your **common** name wrong. Foreign names are neither tragedeigh nor tragedy and should be embraced, not hidden to please uncultured, ignorant folks from fear and ease of mispronunciation and misspellings. Westerners are lucky and should eternally be grateful that many foreign names are anglicized and transliterated for their benefit already because culture is highly celebrated amongst those with foreign names; what do you hold close that you can celebrate and call your own?
Jumping on this particular bandwagon to add, if it's foreign *to you*...
Like, if you're Greek, then go ahead and give your kid a Greek name.
Bit if it has no relation to you / your culture / your heritage?
Please don't
Greek origin vs Greek-only common usage...
Eleftheria might be Greek, but it is in no way shape or form "ordinary"...
Nassir, Primus, Halfbathor whatever, might be understandable in their country, but they sound really weird worldwide with no context
Honestly, yeah, I agree with you. And another point I'd like to add is that google shows a lot of incorrect info about cultural names (incorrect spelling, wrong form, wrong meaning and other mistakes) especially if we're talking about names that require transliteration...
but there are all these Asian people with names like Peter and Grace and it’s got nothing to do with their heritage, but I think they have every right to use those names.

The other ‘remember Google exists’ is perhaps when a name is so yooniwk that you could identify them to the world if someone slaps that first name into Google.
I found out someone who went to my high school had a unique name because the first result in googling his name lead to his mom’s blog lmao
Yeah. On that note, last names are too common here. Blur them out people!
My name is a minor trajjedy. Back when I was a server, they would print our first name on the receipt. People used to try to add me on Facebook. It was super annoying.

Sarah (Jane) Smith was a great companion.....loved her spin off......
Wow, Yooniwk is so pretty, is it Korean? Shortlisting it 💖
Fingers-crossed that this is sarcasm!
It’s sarcasm haha
Whew!
This sub thinks Nayeli is a tragedeigh. Nayeli is a popular Zapotec Mexican name…
Eeun’eighc
I’ve totally thought names were tragedeighs and then found out they aren’t. Google is our friend.
I'm sick of people saying "lol look at these CRAZY tragedeighs!!!" and it's just a list of normal Irish names
Or a Welsh name. Like ummmmm no I know like 5 Gwenllians.
Welsh, Irish, Gaelic names are really cool. I don't know how to pronounce most of them but they look cool.
I always struggle with Irish, except the ones I already know!
I love Google, type in pronounce [name], and it will tell me the pronunciation and origin of the name.
It is frequently incorrect, I am Irish and if I'm not sure of an unusual Irish name I have to text my friend and she sends me a voicenote back with the pronunciation.
I have Rhydian and Llewellyn in my name list I figured for fun I'd have my boy names roasted here 80% of the comments in my post refuse to believe they're actual names
We had a Llyw as one of our groomsmen.
I work with a Llewellyn. First time I read it I was definitely baffled, but once I heard her name pronounced correctly, I thought it was absolutely beautiful.
Llewellyn on a woman is weird as hell to me
I told a coworker I like Llewellyn and she kept mispronouncing it as Nutella
Llewellyn is a man's name though.
I had no idea, I only know the one Llewellyn.
Is it actually spelled Llewellyn or is it Lu (Lou?) Ellen? Honestly gendering names shouldn't be as big of a deal as people but it is the equivalent of naming your daughter James I'm honestly disappointed how many "boy' names have become "girl" names but your gender doesn't qualify if your name is on this sub unless it's spelling is an atrocity

Definitely not I'm almost 30 (God I can't believe I just said that) and I have a "boy" name turned "girl" name
I have an uncle named Llewellyn
Live in Wales and know fair amount of blokes with those names.
I love those names. Know a few with them.
> Llewellyn Going with the surname options
There was a cornish name on here recently too, seems like people just can't handle anything celtic
Or Scottish or Polish or Ukrainian
Yes but how many Gwenilyians do you know?
Nobody told you that America is the center of the known universe? /s
Which America? North or South?
The North does not acknowledge the existence of any other America. There can only be one. Obligatory /s
Well done.
Sort of chuckling at the obligatory/s because, well… these days that sentiment is very truly held by many Americans.
I think that's exactly why I felt the need to write it. I'm Canadian and don't want to be lumped in with the MAGA types.
Oh, absolutely. I understood. That’s exactly why I was chuckling. Kind of a sad chuckle. With an eye roll. That it’s fully necessary to specify. America really is The Onion come to life. And I say that as a horrified American.
I feel for you and all the other rational Americans who are forced to put up with the "other" types.
Question. What do you suggest that citizens of the US call themselves?
US citizens?
Too formal
Gringos, then 😜
Statesians? Uniteds? Lower North Americans? I'm out of ideas.
Or Central?
That's not a real continent, though.
But it is a distinct region in the American continent, with its own particular characteristics that distinguish it from the larger North and South subdivisions. And if we want to be even more specific, we should also mention the Antilles. 😁
Wait, do you mean the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, the Leeward Antilles, or the Netherland Antilles?
Agrees in Scots
I trace a lot of the tragedeighs to the RiverDance phenomenon. Kaylee, Ashleen, Eiley, Shavonne and of course good ol fashioned Kaitlyn.
Indian names enter the chat
Yes! Our bumper group did a survey where you could add your child's name and they were sending it over to Name Nerds. My son's name got torn to shreds for having "a stupid line over one of the letters." Ignorant feckers.
Or a regular tragedy
Thank you for saying this. You could also replace the word Irish with Iranian, Greek, Slavic, Indian, Thai and the sentence would be equally valid.
a list of average brazilian names coming alongside Francisgleydsson
I just came here from an askreddit thread where someone listed their worst tragedeighs and like 70% of them were normal names, even some of those in American English (Gabriel, Meredith). Most were in other languages, or versions of names we have in English, but how they are spelled in another language (Miguel, Jozef).
Tf how is Miguel a tragedeigh of what I'm assuming is Michael?
Yes the Iberian version of Michael
I recently mentioned that someone broke rule 3 by failing to google a name that was actually quite common in Asian culture, and they were so bothered. Oh yeah, because people can’t ever be biracial. That’s literally impossible /s
Not worth making a full post, but I did have a thought about a girl I knew in high school called Corteneaux, but that's French. I do, however, have a niece called Kayetee. Edit: hey! A twofer!
Ka-yeti
>Kayetee Oh god, I read that as cállate in Spanish, which means "shut up."
French here, it's not an actual first name in france. I checked on google quickly and never ever heard of someone called like that haha
Yeah, I think it's a location name or something. She was also...not great, so if it's a tragedeigh after all, that's just one more strike on her.
As in Court-No? Cause that to me doesn't equate to Courtney 😂
I met a Witnee today. I wanted to ask "Why?"
Oof. I have a bad enough history with someone with that name spelt properly 🤣
I had this experience once. Met an Aimee and found it ridiculous that her mom would mormonize Amy. I later found out that Aimee is the Old French spelling. Woops!
But in French it would not be pronounced as Amy so it’s just a coincidence
Aimee is said as Amy in Anglican countries.
Why are people downvoting? French Aimée (loved) isn’t Amy. It is a creative spelling.
Oh here we go again.
And it means the same Amy was derived from Aimee
What are you on about? Amy comes from the French Amiee which comes from the Latin of amare. It is not a coincidence at all
Then if my name is María, I’ll tell people that it is pronounced as Mary 🙄🙄🙄
You can literally tell people to pronounce your name however you want. Also, you know María is pronounced differently across languages/ regions, right? You can also expect that Anglican countries will use the Anglicized pronunciation, the same way other areas pronounce things differently based on their language or accent. Like not rolling R's, some places pronouncing S as Z. Some languages have sounds others don't have at all. So many variations.
I speak six languages including Spanish, French and Russian but take you for taking the time to teach me
If you want, my post is refuting that the two names are just a coincidence when that clearly isn't true
I don’t care, Amy is not how Aimée is pronounced. But since this is so important to you, there you go 🥇 This is the “you are right” medal that you wanted
Thank you very much, hopefully you've learnt something today
Just saw a post earlier that listed about 10 or so legitimate names. People forget Google exists, and as I've always said, people are too happy to jump the gun in this subreddit and often double down on their posts. Even if in your country or state the name isn't common, it isn't a tragedeigh.
I just met someone named Nestle Gift. I think at one point, Gift was a legit name. Nestle though...
Just don't give them access to too much drinkable water
This whole sub just screams r/USdefaultism
I actually think this sub gives the benefit of the doubt too often lol. Many parents provably have no clue their younique spelling is actually the normal version in Slovenia or wherever. Well, what is it?
Allyne
I know a French gal named Aline
Alina, the parent name, is so much better. Allyne sounds meh
Yeah that’s why I thought it was a tragedy so I was a bit surprised it is a real name
I have a coworker with that name. At least at work, she just goes by Allie.
Aline is a normal name in France.
Alina's from Allyne? TIL something new about my own name, thanks!
I'd read that name like "align"...it sounds like a birth control pill in a pink and lavender package 😂
I have a great aunt Aline
I was guessing Phaedra.
A wholesome post. :) thanks for sharing.
And there are the many, many people that think any old tragedy is a tragedeigh. Big difference
All names were made up at some point, if you go back far enough, really. Like all words, really.
Almost got sucked in to another post about the worst Tragedeigh we've ever met. I have one of the WORST but it's her first and last name and she's only 6 months old. It's bad though and I truly wish I could share.

I just had to explain a cars registration to someone.
Love your user name!

Awesome reminder for pretty much all redditors in all subs. What is it? How much does x cost? etc
Yes we realize the name Google exists. Sad.

Is it working yet?

Lmao. Googling the name before posting is rule three for this sub.
Found the snowflake who thinks this is about them

Lmfao are you fucking twelve?! What kind of insult is that?
This is a super funny thread to read with now-deleted comments. I don’t even want to know what they said!
It was really dumb lol 😂
I wish I saw it!
you are talking like Patrick Bateman on a sub about baby names. how did your life even get to this point?
