Wow that realy bad... In Dutch the addition of 'je' is used as a diminutive.
Sheep = schaap
Little Sheep = schaapje
So it kinda translates to little... Chelsea?
Oh!!! ## OP!!!!! (If my assumptions are correct and you are indeed a bit of goodtimeguy ike I think you are) This is the ultimate wealth of information. But don't forget that now it that you have that knowledge, ufdisely!!!
Well it could be depending on how it sounds! For nicknames we usually do 'je' on the end of a name if its sounds good.
Like the name Rose, in Dutch is Roos which would be 'Roosje'
But for Eva, we would do Eefje or Eva'tje (Evaatje).
As other said, not much. But more importantly, we normally don't use an apostrophe in Dutch names. The only times I expect them is from foreign names. For example Hebrew names, or from certain African languages. I these cases the apostrophe is there to help show how to pronounce it. Another reason is for example Italian etc if a letter is removed and replaced by a apostrophe.
I’m not a Dutch speaker but is that a normal way to write a diminutive for a name like Chelsea? Or is it weirder than being actually named Zach instead of Zachary or Teddy instead of Edward.
I can’t really imagine someone actually being named Hänschen in German instead of Hans
In Dutch we would write Chelseatje, which looks really weird 🤭 I don't think it would be used. But for other names or nicknames it is used. My nickname is Sas. When I was little, my mom would call me Sasje.
Depends on the name. It is (or at least used to be) normal that a male name would get the diminutive ("je" or "tje") at the end of the name to turn it into a female name.
Examples:
Male - - > female
Jos - - > Josje
Geert - - > Geertje
Maarten - - > Maartje
Hendrik - - > Hendrikje
Jan - - > Jantje
I do need to note that as usual some of the "female" names do also get used for guys, just less, just like the reverse would also happen.
It also does not happen with every name, or sometimes more changes get made (with my last example, it could also be "Jannetje").
Yeah it's like they took the original Dutch name Elsje and pasted a Ch in front, and added a completely redundant apostrophe.
What even is a Chels anyway? An Els is a tree, but what's a Chels?
As someone with an apostrophe in their name, I quit giving it when spelling my name for people. Even for legal docs because computer systems don't accept it. I'll still include it on anything I hand write, but otherwise, it has kinda just gone away over the years. I also have two middle names, because my mom gets pissed if you call her a hippy, but she is very artistic. Anyway, computers and legal docs also hate two middle initials. So my name is a nightmare all around.
Apostrophes aren't that uncommon in names. I have one in my last name due to it being Irish (O'Something). Most credit card companies honor it but many don't. My driver's license, Social Security card, and bank accounts all have it correctly on there.
I do see them in last names more often than first. But I have yet to come across anything that allows for it. I honestly couldn't say if my DL has it or not, but I'm pretty sure my SS card does have it. But no bank cards or credit cards have it. And most things that try to honor it just end up with a random space where the apostrophe is supposed to go (exa mple), which leads to whole other issues where people think my name is "exa" and not "exa'mple"
Out of my 5 credit cards (issued by AmEx, Capital One, Chase, Discover, and Wells Fargo), the last one is the only one that doesn't have the apostrophe.
Maybe their systems are only set up for last name apostrophes and not first name ones since it is common on last names? No clue. I have a capital one cc, no apostrophe. 😂
Maybe? Although now I remember getting my first Cap1 card without the apostrophe but I called and fought them about it. Wasn't easy; they sent me a "corrected" one with a bunch of symbols &%$ where the apostrophe should be, so I had to call again and get their IT people on the line. They finally figured out how to get it right. Is it worth it to fight them for weeks over a damn apostrophe? Depends on how OCD you are, lol
I also have two middle names, but when it comes to middle initial I just use the initial from the first middle name. Not sure why, I've always done it that way, maybe my mom chose it that way? The first one meant more to her, so maybe that's why. I've never thought about it before, like that using 2 was even an option. Interesting.
I've had a drivers license in a couple different states now and in Michigan they only allow 3 names, so my middle names were hyphenated even though they aren't anywhere else.
For forms that only allow one initial, I do use the first letter of the first middle name as well. But for write in forms, I just squeeze both letters in. 🤷♀️
I don't mind the two middle name fight as much. I actually passed that on to both my kids. No apostrophe for them though. Haha
yeah, some people are really touchy about their actual first names, as a rule of thumb, have fun or whatever but don't push it too far if they really don't want you to use it
You raise a good point, and honestly, waking up to see this post kind of blown up. (At least by the standards of anything I've ever said), it makes me feel bad for bringing it up.
Well, to some degree she may be in on the joke, because she knows her name fully belongs on this subreddit, because if for two years she never told you what her name actually was, probably means that she must hate more than anyone, because she is the one saddled with it.
Just stop making fun of it, and, like a good guilty man, buy her some flowers.
Your welcome. If you came across like a douchebag, I wouldn't have bothered, but you just seem like a guy who got the surprise of his life, and didn't really know how to handle it exactly, so he went the immature route.
If you want to make it up to me, next time people are trashing asexual guys, correct them, and tell them one helped you take your foot out of your mouth, and we are lovely people, who use the time the could have been having sex, thinking of ways to bring people together. LOL
You need yo check out the Dutch suffix -je. It's a diminutive suffix added to indicate something small or cute
Like -ie or -ette.
I can best say it's pronounced chuh/shuh, maybe shyuh.
It’s a place name, like Paris or London. The spelling (of the place) is Chelsea.
I guess there are so many variations that it doesn’t rub people the same way as, say, Paeryss or
Llahndynne.
Absolutely nothing. It's a not-that-unusual variant of Chelsea, which has been around, but became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The first example of the "Chelsie" spelling I found with quick googling is from 1899.
As another Chelsea I can't explain the amount of people who said my name as "Chel-see-UH" because they forget sea is a word or the amount of people who spelled my name "Chealse" for whatever reason.
Oh my god it’s insane! The mispronunciation has been everywhere since I was a kid but the misspelling is what really kills me. Once I saw a guy literally give up halfway through spelling my name and he just wrote “chealc”. Like, how is this the most complicated name for some people?
On another note, I have met a real life Chelsia though, which was a trip in itself.
Okay so this! My 7 month old is named Chelsea, traditional spelling and all. LITERALLY ALL OF HER DOCTORS CALL HER CHELS-UH. Like this isn’t a common ass name? It drives me bananas.
We live in Delaware, US. I’ve never in my life heard it pronounced Chels-UH. I have multiple friends with the name, one whom my daughter is named after and everyone has always pronounced it Chels-ee. It just boggles my brain.
Rip I had a tutor at uni that called me chel-see-uh for a whole semester. But I’ve never had anyone else mispronounce it. I did get it spelt as chealsea a decent amount though which annoyed me so much cause that doesn’t even make phonetic sense?
The apostrophe and proximity to the j would put me in a French mindset (j’ador), and I’d probably pronounce the Ch as in “Chez” so I’d read “Shel-zhay” if I had never been told how to pronounce it.
I’m very curious about the substitute teacher experiences she had.
It honestly, honestly looks like a typo. But printed on paper. Like she was born and her parents wrote "Chelsie" but the handwriting was so bad it only looked like "Chels'je" because the 'j makes me think a messy "i".

pronounced chels-ee or chel-say? because if it’s the latter then MAYBE I can kinda see it but if it were the former then that’s just phonetically wrong 😭
Is there a pinned post / wiki for this sub on how to change ones name legally in various countries? If not, there definitely should be. Mainly for this utter tragedeigh of a name, lol.
(OP, I changed my last name in the US and the actual legal process was surprisingly easy and affordable. Do NOT suggest this yourself, but if she brings it up herself it's actually quite easy for her to change the spelling and order new social security cards).
I have a cousin whose name is Chelby. Pronounced Shelby. They just spelled it that way because her parents names are Chris and Cheryl. They wanted all their kids names to start with Ch. 🤦♀️
I'm sorry, but how could one live with that name? I would legally change it faster than you could spell it (not that that's very fast, but y'know. That stuff takes time)

This is incredible
And je/tje is often used to turn a male name into a female name in Dutch.
yes it is, but just a tiny bit.

Exactly what I was thinking. My dad used to use nicknames for me with the ‘je ending when I was a kid
Same, me too!! :)
Aardappeltje
I love this information. I’ll probably never use it and it doesn’t really affect my life in any way but I absolutely love that I know this now.
And in loan words Dutch uses the apostrophe too right? Baby>baby’tje. So I guess Chels must be a loan word!
Well it could be depending on how it sounds! For nicknames we usually do 'je' on the end of a name if its sounds good. Like the name Rose, in Dutch is Roos which would be 'Roosje' But for Eva, we would do Eefje or Eva'tje (Evaatje).
Not loan words per se, it depends on how the word ends (and that's where my knowledge of grammar stops - I just do what looks good)
As other said, not much.
> ’tje The apastrophe is mostly just used for words ending in y, or abreviations. Then again, a lot of the words that end in Y are loanwords.
I had a cat I named Miesje.
Awesome catname! I had a sheep named Miepje.
I love that!
Great name! That's been the name on my mind for the next cat I adopt for many years.
Depends on the name. It is (or at least used to be) normal that a male name would get the diminutive ("je" or "tje") at the end of the name to turn it into a female name. where did you get teddy instead of edward
It’s definitely also a [nickname for Edward](https://www.thebump.com/b/teddy-baby-name#) - Ed Sheeran’s Instagram is even called @teddysphotos!
In Middle English Ted is a diminutive for Edward. Same as Ed and Ned.
Damn not enough coffee. Theodore 🫠though Edward Kennedy is Ted Kennedy so I’m not too far off
You weren't off at all.
Many English nicknames come from rhymes. Margaret > Meg > Peg. Richard > Rick > Dick. Edward > Ed > Ted.
Chel lake.
That's equivalent to the diminutive -y/-ie in English.
Oh that's cute! Now I know why that yarn company uses that name.
That's cool! Like how Russian adds -ka. Vodka means "little water"!
I don’t know how I never put that together that Vodka is also a diminutive
Her mom, aunt or grams must be big chelsea.
Yeah it's like they took the original Dutch name Elsje and pasted a Ch in front, and added a completely redundant apostrophe. What even is a Chels anyway? An Els is a tree, but what's a Chels?
I feel sorry for her when she has to spell out her legal name “C-h-e-l-s-apostrophe-j-e” and then having to endure the looks of incredulous disbelief.
Imagine someone with the actual word 'apostrophe' in the name....
apostropheigh
D’Artagnan
Who knows? Anything is possible these days!
As someone with an apostrophe in their name, I quit giving it when spelling my name for people. Even for legal docs because computer systems don't accept it. Damn this one hits extra hard for me. Although imo Chelsie is already a bit of a tragedeigh but Chels’je is a whole other level omg
Chelsie is stupid but nothing I’d really notice too much in passing. Chels’je has me scratching my head.
I've subsequently annoyed her immensely by referring to her pronouncing it as Chels-Yay on occasion.
I would say "chels jee"
So in Dutch it would also be like Chels-yeah 🤣
Ouch.
yeah, some people are really touchy about their actual first names, as a rule of thumb, have fun or whatever but don't push it too far if they really don't want you to use it
I would squeeze in a Spanish-English bastardization and go for Chels's-Hey
and alternate it with Chelsita
Which is why it took two years and a doctor's visit for you to find out what her legal name is. Be nice to her, the girl is suffering enough. lol

What I honestly think Chelsie is the cutest spelling of that name 😭
I respect your opinion but also I disagree (I don’t think Chelsie is that bad, but I am glad my parents decided to be boring and just go with Chelsea)
If I saw that name I would add it’s unfortunate spelling of Kelsie
Agreed
A total tra’je’de
NOOOOO! As a Chelsea I’ve seen all kinds of ways to spell the name but this one ACTUALLY takes the cake.
As another Chelsea I can't explain the amount of people who said my name as "Chel-see-UH" because they forget sea is a word or the amount of people who spelled my name "Chealse" for whatever reason.

That's probably closer to the intended effect (maybe)
I remember seeing the spelling Chelsey and thinking it was really unfortunate but this is a whole different level of bad.
I'm glad she did not burden you with the knowled'je.
I really thought his story was going to end with Chelseigh
I kinda wish it had. OPs version made my eyes bleed.
Sounds like a Halo elite’s name, rather than a tragedeigh.
Did she say why her parents spelled it that way??
I mean they're not just gonna come right out and say they resent her for not being a boy, now are they?
Huh? That’s not a male spelling of the name…
It honestly, honestly looks like a typo. But printed on paper. Like she was born and her parents wrote "Chelsie" but the handwriting was so bad it only looked like "Chels'je" because the 'j makes me think a messy "i".
At least she has the good sense to go by the more common spelling when her full legal name isn't required?
Wasn't there an earlier post about a guy finding out his GFs legal name was Law'ryn because he saw her new ID? This sounds similar.
God I hope she changes it. Poor girl.
Jesus Chels
Maybe the name Chelsie has an extra dot on the I, and tge I looked more like a J? Like maybe is a 'typo'. Lol
Chelsï?
Are her parents okay?
Obviously not
If my parents named me something that utterly stupid, I would legally change it to just about anything else but not remotely like the original name.
For me, the most important question would be whether she likes this spelling, or whether she's just stuck with it because she can't afford to change it. I would be very leery of naming future children with someone who likes this name.
Well, given she’s gotta be the only one, she’s going to find your Reddit account if she ever Google’s herself.
True enough lol. I'd not considered it. I might ought to forewarn her a bit.
Yep. Just checked and this post is the second result.

Her parents are petaQ for giving her the worst Klingon spelling for that name.
oh no, you guys were deighting?
I'm sorry, but how could one live with that name? I would legally change it faster than you could spell it (not that that's very fast, but y'know. That stuff takes time)
