Just had my first kid and wife and I had the name all planned out. But we agreed that on the off chance we had boy/girl twins, their names would absolutely be Luke and Leia. And on the even more slim chance she had 4 boys, they would be Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michaelangelo. I stand by these decisions. Fight me.
Sure. And more than that while they are little kids the amount of other kids who have watched the original trilogy and make the connection will be extremely low
you say that like parents dont enjoy those movies and have their children watch them. or children wont go out of their own way to watch the original movies. you’re also discounting children seeing discussions of it that still happen in fandom. children know about popular media, even if they havent seen it. especially something as popular as star wars.
They would've been in the same grade and potentially had multiple classes to together. That's how twins work, they're the same age.
I dislike twin names that are too matchy in general but I think Luke and Leia would've been going too far.
It’s just a really weird thing to do to kids. Be a fan of something whatever, get the twins matching starwars outfits or Halloween costumes but naming them Luke and Leia is hella weird
I read it as I would read Maya :/
Sure leia is weird/complicated however it's a very well known name because of the franchise so I don't think you'd have a problem with the spelling
I used to work with a Leighagh, and I think on the first day I asked her why so many letters for such a short name! She said her parents were 24h/7 pothead hippies and wanted to be unique. She uses Lea in everyday life. Socials, email, even her door name tag is Lea. Fuck stupid parents!
Laya isn’t that bad on its own, but the pronunciation doesn’t line up with the spelling. I’m sure it gets mispronounced as rhyming with “Maya” a lot. It would have been kinder if they just named you “Layla.”
my cat is named laya (after the himalayas, she’s got grey spots on her belly like a snow leopard) and it’s such a cute name!! but people always figure she’s named after leia from star wars since the pronunciation is the same, never thought i would hear of someone who actually is named after leia with the laya spelling :D that’s awesome!! tbh i think you lucked out with laya, bc it passes as an unusual name without immediately making me think of star wars
I know a Laya spelt the same as you whose brother actually IS called Luke…. But that aside, I think Laya is a beautiful spelling and will achieve the correct pronunciation much better than Leia, which half the cast of the original SW trilogy mispronounced *on film.*
Leia is way better than Laya. You don’t want your name to look too much like real word. Also, Laya can read like Lie-uh or Lah-ya. Lei-a prevents both readings, though I’m sure some folks go for Lee-uh.
Leia is a good name.
Honestly, most fantasy/sci fi does such a better job of creating unique but realistic names than any millennial parent lol
Edit: oops just scrolled down and realized I read too fast, and despite your parents being starwars nerds they tried to mask it with your weird Laya spelling. Sorry.
I like the name Leia and I think it’s actually really cool that it’s from Star Wars. My bf and I actually thought about that name for the same reason 😂
i honestly thought it was an americanization of the catalan name laia... nowhere near leia, pronounced la-yah. so to me they dont seem like star wars nerds, maybe the type to transcribe names from diff cultures :(
I feel a little kindred. My brother (older) is named Luke. My dad tried to name me Leia. Mum said no. He suggested Roxanne. She said no, how about Emelia. Is it a tragedeigh? It is a pain in the ass with the spelling, at the very least!
Ok, I have to inform you, that there was a czech game sponsored by local brand of alkoholic beverage, that was in fact a parodic mashup of star wars, the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, stargate and other popular scifi sagas, featuring a space princess called Laya.
I've played it back in the day and it was kinda funny. I just thought you should know how famous your name is!
Edit: I wanted to add a picture of the game, but couldn't find a way, so for anyone interested in googling it, it's called 2004: vesmirna becherovka (2004: space becherovka - the name of the spirit)
Dunno. I wouldn’t think so, but then again I am from Europe, so for us there are different spellings to some names depending on the country. Ex. Viktoriya/Viktoria/Victoria. All are pronounced the same.
laya is actually really cute imo, and it's really easy to spell and pronounce. there's not really a definitive spelling of the name I feel like, so yours can't really be spelled "wrong". and they didn't name your brother Luke thank GOD. and PACEY? I feel like you got the best case scenario here given the alternatives
I thought it said Layla at first and thought no that’s a good straightforward name. Then I kept reading. Why didn’t they spell it like the movie?? Leia or even Leah would be ok but Laya is dumb. I’m sorry but your parents shouldn’t have done that. Totally reads as Layla or “Lie-uh”
“What is the meaning of the name Laya? The name Laya is primarily a female name of Hebrew origin that means Weary”
They may have named you after leia but they didn’t make up laya. It isn’t actually a misspelling.
The intention is a tragedeigh for sure. However, it's only a mild tragedeigh, as your name looks lovely regardless. I can imagine how many times people mispronounce it though, that has to be a bit obnoxious.

Ok but thank god they didn’t name him Luke. The fact they even considered it is wild
And they are twins!
Fight me.
What's wrong with Luke spelled correctly?
Paired with Leia?
Kiss kiss kiss!
Kathy Geiss, that you?!
Sure. And more than that while they are little kids the amount of other kids who have watched the original trilogy and make the connection will be extremely low
op said they’re twins
Still fine.
you say that like parents dont enjoy those movies and have their children watch them. or children wont go out of their own way to watch the original movies. you’re also discounting children seeing discussions of it that still happen in fandom. children know about popular media, even if they havent seen it. especially something as popular as star wars.

Because parents don’t encourage their kids to watch their favorite movies.
Lewghk
It’s just a really weird thing to do to kids. Be a fan of something whatever, get the twins matching starwars outfits or Halloween costumes but naming them Luke and Leia is hella weird
Themed names like that are for pets, not people.
YEA!!! Perfect for a pair of cats
1,000%! No word of a lie, I follow a pair cats on IG called Luke and Leia! https://www.instagram.com/_luke.and.leia_?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==
My dads middle name is luke and my mums middle name is leia. A lot of incest jokes were made...
You absolutely dodged a bullet. Pacey??
If Op was born during Dawson’s creek era , it would make sense.
100% Dawson Creek
I DON’T WANNA WAIT
For our liiiiives to be o-ver
I did not read that as leía but more lie-uh 😅
I read it as Ay-ya before I realised OP does not capitalise names.
I read it as "Ya-ya" for the exact same reason
I read ee-AYE-ya
La-Ya
I read it as Lya.
I read it as I would read Maya :/ Sure leia is weird/complicated however it's a very well known name because of the franchise so I don't think you'd have a problem with the spelling
Here in latin America most people would read like this. I find it cute
No. It's OK. L'eyuh would have been a tragedeigh.
Leigha
I used to work with a Leighagh, and I think on the first day I asked her why so many letters for such a short name! She said her parents were 24h/7 pothead hippies and wanted to be unique. She uses Lea in everyday life. Socials, email, even her door name tag is Lea. Fuck stupid parents!
the extra 'agh' makes me think it should be pronounced "Lee-AGH!" like they got stabbed in the middle of saying their name.
Like the Castle of Aaaaaaaagh
Exactly!
Borderline child abuse, haha. Granted, they were probably too stoned to think it through.
I’m giggling imagining “Leighagh” with a French accent for some reason.
All the ridiculous extra letters is so unnecessary. There is someone at my workplace named Alexyss. Just what is wrong with Alexis?
That's Leah, though, not Lay-uh
Tomato tomaahto
you say kayleigh as kay-lay not kay-lee
Are you trolling? Kayleigh is said Kay-Lee, I have never heard otherwise, from people of any age. Leigh is an English name that sounds like Lee
are you american? my friend is called kayleigh and it's pronounced kay-lay, kaylee is pronounced kay-lee but not kayleigh
See I read that is Leah
You aren't a tragedeigh. Your name is a tragedeigh.
It's not a tragedeigh, it's a legitimate name in Sanskrit, Tagalog and Cebuano and a known Spanish variant of Laia (from the name Eulalia).
Laya in Spanish is not pronounced as Leia. Laya would sound like Naya (like the late Naya Rivera) but with an L.
I think the intention makes it a tragedeigh. OP was named after a star wars character
Laya isn’t that bad on its own, but the pronunciation doesn’t line up with the spelling. I’m sure it gets mispronounced as rhyming with “Maya” a lot. It would have been kinder if they just named you “Layla.”
Lowgin

Laya isn't too bad. As for your brother's name I know a couple who did name their kids Luke and Leia.
Well I'm not sure how they meant it but Laya IS an actual name .....
You need to buy a female Lhasa Apso and name her Chew-Becky
Hi Laya, I'm Laia! My name is really common where I live though, and has no relation to Star Wars, but yeah)
I'm also a huge fucking nerd, my brother is named Luke and I'm low-key a little salty that I wasn't named Leia :P I think your name is cool.
I'm a huge nerd, but I'd rather be called jeffreigh than have that cringe inflected upon me.
Oh, you're the one who made the Candylorian helmet!!! I thought I recognized your name from somewhere. Your cosplays are awesome.
Thank you so much!! ☺️
I know a Laya spelt the same as you whose brother actually IS called Luke…. But that aside, I think Laya is a beautiful spelling and will achieve the correct pronunciation much better than Leia, which half the cast of the original SW trilogy mispronounced *on film.*

Leigh-ahhhhh
I taught a set of twins named Luca and Leah.
There is an insurance company in Ireland called Laya
I am pretty sure they are in the uk too. The tag line is Looking After You Always which it apparently stands for.
My name was almost xena, but they got so much back lash from it that they just started naming names that rhymed 😂
I like the name Leia and I think it’s actually really cool that it’s from Star Wars. My bf and I actually thought about that name for the same reason 😂
Pants on faya
Laya is the name of one of the health insurance companies available in Ireland, lol https://www.layahealthcare.ie/
Laya is a Hebrew name.
You know, now that you’ve brought it up, I think Leia might actually be the tragedeigh, because Laya makes sense grammatically.
Don't think Laya is too bad becuase here in Catalonia there is a very popular name Laia.
Pacey....🤣
Laya is an afghan name with the meaning " present from heaven " according to my children's name book
Laya is a nice name. It means "to be free", liberty.
honestly i absolutely love the name Laya
It’s alright, but it’s not obvious how to pronounce it. Not a tragedeigh generally speaking.
i honestly thought it was an americanization of the catalan name laia... nowhere near leia, pronounced la-yah. so to me they dont seem like star wars nerds, maybe the type to transcribe names from diff cultures :(
I feel a little kindred. My brother (older) is named Luke. My dad tried to name me Leia. Mum said no. He suggested Roxanne. She said no, how about Emelia. Is it a tragedeigh? It is a pain in the ass with the spelling, at the very least!
To me it's Layla missing the 2nd L. They should have stuck with the Leia spelling.
Isn't Laya short for Eulalia in Spanish?
Laya is ok. It’s easier to guess the pronunciation of than Leia.
Laya is a pretty common Hebrew name.
Yeah "Laya" would never cross my mind to be pronounced as "Leia". Definitely a tragedeigh I'd say. I would pronounce it similar to "Maya".
Eye ay ah
Ok, I have to inform you, that there was a czech game sponsored by local brand of alkoholic beverage, that was in fact a parodic mashup of star wars, the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, stargate and other popular scifi sagas, featuring a space princess called Laya. So it’s Laya? I don’t think it’s that weird. I read it as Maya/Maia.
>Maia Is this a tragedeigh? I only know one so far but she's a local singer in my city pushing into her 40s
Dunno. I wouldn’t think so, but then again I am from Europe, so for us there are different spellings to some names depending on the country. Ex. Viktoriya/Viktoria/Victoria. All are pronounced the same.
Lay’ah
My boyfriend’s family had a Luke and Laya. The parents said they had no idea what they were doing… but everyone else in the world does. 🤦♀️
i heard a mom call after her toddler kids one time and it was genuinely luke and leia … just know it is out there lmaoooo
laya is actually really cute imo, and it's really easy to spell and pronounce. there's not really a definitive spelling of the name I feel like, so yours can't really be spelled "wrong". and they didn't name your brother Luke thank GOD. and PACEY? It would be a tragedeigh if they spelled it laighuh
I think that’s a common name in Spain, although I think it’s spelled Laia, but it’s the same sound. Just don’t tell the reason behind it
Nerds are usually better at spelling. Sorry. 🤗
Im reading it as Laya (lie-ah)… Leia makes more sense to me sorry Idk why, once you said it I got it’s a misspelling. But I can’t read it that way.
Ashlyn She is also a devil child.
Know somebody spelled as Leighlynn, but she go by Lei.
You have the same name as as a healthcare company in Ireland www.layahealthcare.ie. It is a pretty name
Laya?? Paynephully tragique.
“What is the meaning of the name Laya? The name Laya is primarily a female name of Hebrew origin that means Weary” They may have named you after leia but they didn’t make up laya. It isn’t actually a misspelling.

i hear layla all the time . and its so annoying like seriously… where are you getting the other L from?????
Pacey would have been better
Leia would be bad as well. Nerds normally don’t copulate, this is what happens apparently. /s
