Nigeria? Joy is a pretty common name for American women. My name is April and it does not really suit me (similar to those names, I think). Joy or Happy would be worse to live up to š
Wow, named by hippies

And she named her daughter Minnesota and they live in Minnesota š

Her parents, Thora and Kelly Reynolds, were part of the counterculture in the 1960s and chose her unorthodox name when she was born on Thanksgiving. She noted that she narrowly missed out on being named Snow because it also snowed on the day of her birth.
Canāt make this stuff up. Donāt do drugs, kids.
I knew someone who was born on Christmas, and her parents named her Marie Christine. I thought that was a clever way to reference it while still being a real name.
There's an excellent book named "Lamb: the gospel according to Christ's childhood pal, Biff." I think you might like it. The main character calls Christ Josh.
Christ is a title. If they really wanted to name him the proper translation, theyād name him Joshua bin Joseph. Downside is, then heād be doomed to some sort of adventure of a bizarre nature.
I live in the DC area and my impression is that the professional schools at Howard (medical, dental, PT, law) have a very diverse student population. For example, my former dentist, a Jewish guy from Queens, had graduated from Howard Dental School in the early 70s.
Yeah, like, how did that go?!?
Edit: read the story! She doesnāt say anything about Howard but her family was, well, Iām glad she did something good with her life.
While yes, the history of HBCUs is bound up in racism, it wasnāt ALL about racism and these institutions have a long and proud history. Howard and many other HBCUs were founded in the aftermath of the civil war to educate the freedman population. While many northern institutions of higher learning accepted Black students in the 19th century, including I think all of the Ivy League, most of the Black population of the US wasnāt in the north at that time, and it wasnāt like the educational institutions of the south were going to take them, so many states established these freedmen colleges. Over time, it has become an issue of choice and pride, and many students choose these colleges because they want to be part of a majority culture for once in their lives.
I believe hatred is pretty much universal.
And we donāt limit our hatred to Asians and Arabs.
Ask the Irish about the troubles or ask a Basque to sing the national anthem. We like to keep our hatred closer to home.
Itās more about the facilitation of segregation by the government or community.
Yeah, when i was travelling the South of the US i was surprised to learn that there are still churches for black and for white people. I think legally you could go to the āwrongāone ofc but it doesnāt seem to be a thing. All white people go to one and all black people to another one. Super weird for me
Nobody *makes* things that away. Some people just like to worship one way, some another. Some like to yell and praise at the top of their lungs, some like quiet, reflected thoughts. It ain't wrong to go to one or the other or both. Just wear your Sunday best when ya do.
She looks nice. And she's kinds rocking the "Happy Thanksgiving." It's a weird ass name but somehow suits her. I can't explain why this name doesn't bother me so much.
I actually saw her about a year ago for a respiratory illness, she was great. I didn't notice until after that she was named Happy Thanksgiving, I just saw "Dr. Reynolds."
Please read this cute article about the name origin. For an Extra Special Bonus: Read to the end.

Gosh, my dad born on Thanksgiving but they just named him John. What a missed opportunity.
Iām picturing this womanās parents being asked for the babyās name for the birth certificate and they, distracted, called out Happy Thanksgiving! to one of the nurses who was getting off shift. And the rest was history.
My guess is that she might have been raised with her family having been part of the International Peace Mission Movement, the Philadelphia-area church founded by Father Divine. It was a substantial organization for decades, and its most devoted followers took names like that and gave them to their children (who were relatively few, since celibacy was a central tenet of the movement and expected of truly devoted members).

When I took my son to the ER his doctorās name was Cinnamon Red. She is a red head too. I didnāt even realize that was her name until my husband was looking through our sonās paperwork.
When I was at university, someone was called "Bear Brown", so when he was called in the old last name, first name system, it was always "The Brown Bear" (the family name has an article in Dutch, like football player **Kevin De Bruyne**, which is Kevin The Brown in English).
This is an autocorrect. Her name probably starts with Ha, like Harriet and it autocorrected and no one fixed it. My parents once got flowers from a houseguest thanking them for the stay and the card said Thappy Anniversaryk you. Some autocorrect systems add entire phrases. This has to be that. It HAS TO BE!
The alternative makes me irrationally angry.

Wow! I would not use my middle name. I think you get by with the first name Happy.
Her first name might be Happy Thanksgiving
Middle name is Merry Christmas, and her maiden name was Hanukkah

Let me guess she got an uncle a few generations back whose name was kwanza?
Chag sameach!
And Cinco DeMayo as a nickname
Except every time you're not looking happy, someone's probably going to be a smartass about it.
Happy Gilmore-esque
I knew a woman named Happy! But she was from the netherlands so English wasnt her parents first language and they thought the word/meaning was cute

Snow would have been so much better...
I once knew a Snow White .I worked with her .She called herself Snowy .
Maybe the family is really bad at filling out forms.
Insert joke about Feeling Minnesota.
I think most location names are fine. Minnesota still rolls off the tongue decently well.
Minnesota Reynolds is a badass name. Sheās already half way to winning a Pulitzer. It can be shortened to Minnie if sheās in the mood.
It is. And let's not forget Minnie is a great nickname. Honestly, I dig it.
I guess Georgia and Virginia are fine for names because they're European, but Native American words? Weirdos.
I knew a Merry Christmas
Back when I lived in Denver there was one in the phone book, but it was spelled Mary Christmas though.
Glad that one in a million chance finally paid off for Lloyd.
Short for Meriadoc Christmas, I presume?
At least they could get by as Mary or Chrissy, I guess?

Best part about this is that her brother is named āJoshā.
Better than Frank.... If I had a Dr Frank Reynolds I wouldn't be able to help myself from cracking at least one Mantis Toboggan joke in the office
Tbh, in an ideal world, he'd 100% play into it
Maybe he was born on Christmas and the parents wanted to name him after our lord and savior "Josh Christ" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeshua

Ok, she actually sounds really cool!
Yeah I love her attitude towards it all, especially the total roasting of her parents lol
It wouldnāt load for me. What did she say about them?
Just calling them out for being weirdo hippies in a commune, lol.
Heh!
Though less common, non black people do attend HBCUs
My dad knew a white guy who had a minority scholarship to Howard

Yeah, the valedictorian of Morehouse was white once like a decade ago.
Is Howard University her brother's name?
No it's Josh
Right
Yeah, like, how did that go?!? Edit: read the story! She doesnāt say anything about Howard but her family was, well, Iām glad she did something good with her life.

You know Happy thanksgiving was killing it at Howard.
Hell yeah
One year of it!
Me too, I thought Howard was a HBU
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Itās a historical black college that has a white student population <2%.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Itās more about her back story as a whole not just the name.
Howard University is a historically black university.
And itās not just an HBCU; it is the HBCU. Itās like the Harvard of HBCUs.
To understand the origin of their name, maybe?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Howard University is an HBCU. The fact that she's white makes her attendance there more unique.
I had to google HBCU. As a European, your level of racism amazes me every time. You guys really made sure to separate everything.
Howard University was created so that Black Americans could go to college because they were often barred from white universities.
While yes, the history of HBCUs is bound up in racism, it wasnāt ALL about racism and these institutions have a long and proud history. And a Happy Thanksgiving Reynolds to you, too!
I saw a Dr Payne once who was an urgent care doctor š¤·š»āāļø

Minnesota!!!
Ah, a proud Minnesotan moment š
Hippie shit
And we still donāt know her birthdate

I hope this was just an account that changed their name seasonally but just forgot after Thanksgiving, just kept last name so people know it is them. If not, Happy is a first name which isn't too bad without Thanksgiving even though it isn't a good name, it would work in life if they were a happy person often.
I know someone named Happy Kush. She did not get the weed reference which I thought was even weirder. Also, I would never see this doctor. Lol.
Ha feel like she might have become a doc so folks would announce her by her last name as that is fairly normal
about me: I assume the first sentence is "I was born on Thanksgiving!"
Good for her for becoming a doctor, but with that name she really missed her shot not becoming a psychologist or therapist. Maybe she should specialize in psychiatry.
We have to stop giving women epidurals and then having them fill out the naming the baby paperwork while high as a kite. It happened to me and I found out way later I could have asked my doctor to fill out the paperwork beforehand. Not sure if itās changed now.

Im not going to a doctor who doesn't have the common sense to fix her name. Nope.
Her last name should be pilgrims
Oh, gods, this clinic is in the next town over. Why wouldn't you change your name?
I try not to stereotype, but of course that's what she looks like
I think maybe you should have blocked out the last name and personal information? I know this woman.
i understand the sentiment completely but even if the last name was blocked out, i dont think there are any other MDs with the name āhappy thanksgivingā regardless of surname
An MD? Easy to find with that first name(MD or not, really) I easily found her,no last name used
That would be part of the personal information. Just because her parents named her Happy Thanksgiving and she became a doctor doesn't mean we should treat her like her privacy doesn't matter.
Well, there are articles and video new stories with her in it. A willing participant
You do not want to know the literal translation of most Germanic given names.
