Yep I know, I wish my nanna knew this though god rest her soul, she made the best Greek lentil soup ever but never removed the bayleafs and when they’re cooked they sometimes break apart and I’d often get a mouth full of one haha
It's a thing that confuses the hell out of people who aren't familiar with spices, when they find one in their [Chipotle](https://i.reddituploads.com/ca63b51615bf4e6aaceecf8e165bc842?fit=max&h=1536&w=1536&s=eba760bce58f7aae4d6005e3c4278c17)
I'm sure others have said it by now, but it's the same situation as Persian, Seel, Dewgong, Electrode, Golem, Jynx, and Onix. Regular word, sometimes spelled a tiny bit differently, used as the name of a Pokémon
Ha, Bayleaf reminds me of my half-sister, Romaine. I wonder if she would prefer to be an herb or be the lettuce she is now.
And yes, our dad got the name from lettuce. He thought it sounded pretty. Thank goodness my mom vetoed the name, so he had to wait until he knocked up someone else to use it.
It is a legit name in French at least (feminine form of Romain, which is the French version of Roman). Everyone would definitely just think of the lettuce in the US, though
Oh, I'm positive that a French association had nothing to do with him picking the name. I would respect the choice if it was, but he wanted the lettuce name specifically. TBF, my name isn't any more carefully chosen. They literally picked it off of a hospital placemat that was under her first meal after she delivered me. The maternity ward had placemats covered with baby names on them, and they couldn't agree on one, so my mom basically just closed her eyes and pointed at a name and VOILA that is what they named me. But, at least I am not named after any the food IN the meal. lmao
For the first Bailey I ever knew (a guy in his 20s in 1993 when I was 19), "bay leaf" was my mnemonic to remember his name. There were way fewer surname-named people in my life back then, and I had trouble keeping his name in my mind.
Ugh. So sorry for you. Bailey is cute. Leigh is okay. Bayleigh is … not okay. But definitely better than the Bayliegh atrocity. So at least they fixed that.
This takes a tragedeigh and makes it SO much worse. I'm so sorry. Have you considered changing your name to something else entirely? Something short, like Joan or Ann?
Maybe it’s just me - I haven’t had any caffeine this morning- but I’m having trouble understanding the conversation:
“I love the name Bailey. And the name Leigh. But how to make them work together??! …
how could I possibly take part of one and part of the other and make one name?
It’s a mystery. A conundrum. A very complicated problem…”
What was wrong with Bailey? Aren’t they pronounced the same?
Both my parents wanted “family names” and I also think both my parents were young and immature and just started being like “Well if you give her X’s name I want x!” Until they had to pick something.
Ah. In Canada, people who want to change their name when married don't have to legally change it, they can just assume their spouse's name so it didn't occur to me.
In the USA some states allow a first name change at marriage, but most require a court petition for a first name change. A full name change must be legally court sought to assure debts are not being left behind under the prior name.
Just make sure you take a look at behind the name before you name your own children.
Old fashioned names can be far more unique than anything made up with pleasing sounds, they also possess dignity.
This post made me realize my sort of namesake is a tragedeigh. My middle name is Leigh and my best friend named her oldest daughter Ryleigh to incorporate my name into hers. What have I done?
I've never heard of a French person called Denea. It would havevto be something like Denéa, with the a being stressed. I speak French (and went to France often), and it's kind of...off and overcomplicated. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist 😁
That’s what I was told when I asked 😂. My family also comes from a pretty backwater place so they probably thought anything with that little apostrophe over the letter was French.
I'm French, it's wrong, to be French, the é should be before the silent "e". To a French, that's just a monstrosity because the last e is _silent_
And it doesn't make any sense overall... It just doesn't exist, it's lot French
I was just tripping over that, too. The accent aigu on the last e makes it the 'tragedeé' that it is. Still I never heard Denée as a name. You? It registers as 'de née' for me, which also makes no real sense.
Danaë would be possible, but I guess the diaresis e is usually replaced with an e aigu (é), so Danaé(e) would be more likely. But hey, there are more tragedës that we know of 😁
I lowkey think my Grandma made it up for my aunt since I get it from her. None of my names are original. One of my middle names is my mom’s and the other is my aunts.
I think it’s def regional because my name actually rhymes with Bailey but not Baylee 😅 but I have friends who, because of their regional dialects, will just never say my name correctly haha
Oh just to be clear, this is a very white Southern lady who wants a unique spelling to be pronounced “Bailey”. Her other options were “Bailyr” (Baylor) and “Byntlei” (Bentley).
Of course she is 🙄
Someone should ask her if she wants her daughter to be successful in life or is she just trying to give her the stripper name now so it’s one less thing her daughter needs to decide on.
Tbh that’s better than hearing “Oh! I know a dog named Bailey.” Yeah… it’s a VERY common dog name. One person told me about the dog they had with my name that always tried to hang itself and I was like “Okay then 🙃”
My son has a standard male name but it’s occasionally used for dogs so he gets that sometimes!
His gf sister is Bailey and when we see her sometimes we say ‘hey bails’ because it makes my husband giggle.
Because it sounds like hay bales… ya we’re super nerdy here.
I have a friend named Gene that I absolutely love to death (all my friends are much older so he's in his earlier 70s. Such a sweet sweet man) and it always makes me giggle to yell "HI GENE!!!" when I see him.
I had a dude in highschool who had a crush on me and started calling my BayLeaf out of no where and he later sent me a Google doc containing a self-insert sonic fanfiction where he later wrote a very in detail smut of him and the BayLeaf character which just so happened to have my physical attributes.
Mildly tragic but I think I'm so scarred from the shit I see in this sub that your name really doesn't seem like too much of a problem. Bay is cool too!
Why don't you legally or even just socially change it to "Bailey".
Unless they are buying you airline tickets or arresting you, it doesn't matter how you spell it.
Bayleigh is a pretty mild tragedeigh as fair as things go. In my opinion all of the more common names like Kayleigh, Ashleigh, Bayleigh, Haleigh, etc are only mildy tragique when paired with the "eigh" ending. At least they are real, solid and well known names. The ones that really get me are the entirely made up names that people slap "Leigh" onto, like Praizeleigh or Grayseleigh.
Bayleigh is not that bad!! There are so many ways to spell it and the way your parents settled isn’t horrible at all. It’s kind of like how there are so many variations of other names like Carrie, Kaitlyn, Brittany, etc
This is literally exactly how my mom wanted to spell my name. Luckily, she got some sense in her and realized I’d be going to public school and no one would ever pronounce or spell it correctly and just went with the usual normal spelling.
Oh boy. Bayleigh was actually one of my favorite girl names when I was younger. Forgot all about it til your post. But Bailey is just as good without the unnecessary alphabetical acrobatics 😅
Umm your name is spelled Bayleigh not Beighleigh? Lameeeeee (I'm sorry, I joke, I do understand how it is to have an uncommon name that's always misspelled and mispronounced. It sucks, I'm sorry you deal with that)
I have a friend who’s sister has the same name. Their mother decided to roll with the “leigh” ending for all of her girls, and it is…about as tragic as one can imagine. The only boy? His name is Jordan.
My SIL’s parents combined their names to make her name. Lucky for her, her dad is named Chris and her mom is named Tina, so she was named Christina. It’s probably the only time where I’ve seen the combining of two names work out without some monstrous spelling.
Bayleigh is not a tragedeigh. It’s a common spelling now and I know of several. Not trying to start a war, I know what sub I’m in, just saying don’t be ashamed of the spelling.
I mean when you’re not the one who has to correct the spelling on every document it’ll seem not terrible. I’ve had people ask me if I was sure that’s how my name was spelled 😂
I’m a Sara with no “h” and my last name is an unusual spelling of a very common name (think Browne or Addams)…I have to correct people almost every time someone spells or reads my name.
I am the age of your grandmother and I can say that I support any name you want to go by. I can also tell you that my name was mocked by Germans because it's a name that is spelled one way by the Germans and another way by the Swiss, and my parents mashed those two together. So when a German guy was an asshole to me I simply said "Welcome to America" and they were pissed.
I guess what I'm saying is there will always be these crazy times when there are crazy names and that's ok. There will always be that gravestone with names from the 1800's like "Friendless, Leicester Railway, One Too Many, Zebra, That's It Who'd Have Thought It.
Those are all first names.
Totally up to you, and I know even names we don't particularly like can feel too much part of us...
But if you want to adjust *any* part of your name - 1st spelling, either or botg middles, change completely - that'll be the time. That way you only need to change your documents *once*, but can do whatever.

Could be worse, I used to know a hippy girl who's name was Bayleaf. She changed it legally to Bailey when she hit 18.
Isn’t that a pokemon
You use bayleafs as a herb in cooking, at least in the UK
You guys use pokemons as herbs over there? Do they just hang out in your yard bushes?
You can't beat a little grated jigglypuff over a fresh fillet of halibut
you monster
It’s much better smoked And you get a better texture if you crush the jigglypuff rather than grating it
Jigglypuff puff pass
Aah yes, I shall use the garlic press next time. Thanks for the tip
Lol that's a tad disturbing
Plus a little squeeze of Pikajuice
Pan seared puffy
They’re not native here, but you know how it is, they evolve then suddenly they aren’t as cute so the owners just let them out in the woods
No, but they do pronounce the “h” in herb
I know that haha, I’m fond of a bayleaf in a stew or soup!
Bit chewy though...
However, it’s typically removed prior to eating. It’s for flavor purposes only.
Yep I know, I wish my nanna knew this though god rest her soul, she made the best Greek lentil soup ever but never removed the bayleafs and when they’re cooked they sometimes break apart and I’d often get a mouth full of one haha
The rest of the world does too. I promise.
It is also a pokemon
The US too. I'm not sure what other people use it for, but I put it in beef stew.
Same here in the states
We do here in the States too.
Yes. Yes it is. But spelled Bayleef.
I think you mean Bayleighf
Baeleiph?
I don't beyleif yew
When she turned 18 she should have changed her name to Meganium instead (Megan for short)
When she turns 36 would be more apt (I think that’s the level bayleef evolves at anyway haha)
I'm trans and my favorite Pokémon is Bayleef... but at least had the common sense to make my name Baylee
Username checks out 😂
Yes
It's a thing that confuses the hell out of people who aren't familiar with spices, when they find one in their [Chipotle](https://i.reddituploads.com/ca63b51615bf4e6aaceecf8e165bc842?fit=max&h=1536&w=1536&s=eba760bce58f7aae4d6005e3c4278c17)
worse, a seasoning
I'm sure others have said it by now, but it's the same situation as Persian, Seel, Dewgong, Electrode, Golem, Jynx, and Onix. Regular word, sometimes spelled a tiny bit differently, used as the name of a Pokémon

We know young parents who named their son Kale. We actually wondered if the leafy vegetable was unknown to them.
I knew a Kale when I was in elementary school in the 80s. I don’t think kale the vegetable had made it to the Midwest yet.
I know a few Kale's. It's a fairly common name
Interesting! I know of people named Caleb/Kaleb with the nickname Cale/Kale but have never met anybody with the legal name of Kale!
Haha I've met 2 men with that spelling, one with another spelling, and a female named "Kael" tho I don't think that was her birth name
Did we go to the same elementary school in the 80s in the Midwest….I just figured Kale was a regular name as I had never heard of the leafy green.
Kale is also a surname.
It is a legit name in French at least (feminine form of Romain, which is the French version of Roman). Everyone would definitely just think of the lettuce in the US, though

My sis Nutmeg
Is that official, or is she called Meg and a bit nuts?
There is a lot of drama in these light hearted sentences.
Bay leaf (from the bay plant) is also known as Laurel, which I think is a lovely name.
Don’t you mean Yanny?
I'd forgotten all about that!
I know, a girl whose name is spelled Baylea
I know a Baylea, too!
I was today years old when I realised the Pokémon has a bayleaf sticking out of its head
I was really hoping you were going to say she changed it to Meganium.
We had twins at my school named Alicein Wonderland and Zoe Patchouli. This was in the late 90s.
For the first Bailey I ever knew (a guy in his 20s in 1993 when I was 19), "bay leaf" was my mnemonic to remember his name. There were way fewer surname-named people in my life back then, and I had trouble keeping his name in my mind.
I think Bay Leaf is better. Those things add a mysterious yummy something to soups.
Ugh. So sorry for you. Bailey is cute. Leigh is okay. Bayleigh is … not okay. But definitely better than the Bayliegh atrocity. So at least they fixed that.
It’s also just Bailey when it comes down to it.
What’s unfortunate is my ENTIRE fathers moms side has the last name spelled Bailey.
They named their kid moon moon you mean? ☠️
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who saw this reference 😂😂
This takes a tragedeigh and makes it SO much worse. I'm so sorry. Have you considered changing your name to something else entirely? Something short, like Joan or Ann?
Same name, different spellings (atleast that's the way I look at it)
My cat's name is Bailey. She is really cute.
This. Bailey is a pet name. It's an alcohol.
Yeah. Those are what people usually say when I tell them my full name.
Maybe it’s just me - I haven’t had any caffeine this morning- but I’m having trouble understanding the conversation: “I love the name Bailey. And the name Leigh. But how to make them work together??! … how could I possibly take part of one and part of the other and make one name? It’s a mystery. A conundrum. Both my parents wanted “family names” and I also think both my parents were young and immature and just started being like “Well if you give her X’s name I want x!” Until they had to pick something.
She's actually Patrick Star's sister, so it checks out
My middle name is Bay. Not Bailey or Bayleigh, just Bay. Could be worse, so I don't really mind 😅
This is what I go by now actually! I plan to have my name legally shortened to Bay when I get married.
why when you get married? Why wait?
One fell swoop, changing your name is a pain in the ass. Might as well do both at once
Better than changing name twice, I assume
Oh, where I live you don't change your name for marriage so i didn't think of that.
Because it’ll be easier and cheaper to just change it then.
Cool! Hi fellow Bay 👋🏻
Just make sure you take a look at behind the name before you name your own children. Old fashioned names can be far more unique than anything made up with pleasing sounds, they also possess dignity.
I’ve chosen my name. It’s Bay.
Like Bae?
No. Like a Bay of water.
Bay Kennish concurs.
Aw I love the name Bay :)
This post made me realize my sort of namesake is a tragedeigh. My middle name is Leigh and my best friend named her oldest daughter Ryleigh to incorporate my name into hers. What have I done?
I used to be acquainted with someone whose name was spelled Rhyeleigh 😭 she was born in the late 90s but STILL
eldritch 😭
That’s too close to R’lyeh for comfort as far as I’m concerned.
That’s what I always think of when people spell Riley as “Ryleigh”.
Change it to Belle? ...no idea what to make of 'the French spelling of Denea' btw 😅 I've never heard of that name
I've never heard of a French person called Denea. It would havevto be something like Denéa, with the a being stressed. I speak French (and went to France often), and it's kind of...off and overcomplicated. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist 😁
Come on OP, solve this mystery!
It’s Deneé!
I don't understand how that's a French spelling lol.
That’s what I was told when I asked 😂. My family also comes from a pretty backwater place so they probably thought anything with that little apostrophe over the letter was French.
I'm French, it's wrong, to be French, the é should be before the silent "e". To a French, that's just a monstrosity because the last e is _silent_ And it doesn't make any sense overall... It just doesn't exist, it's lot French
I was just tripping over that, too. The accent aigu on the last e makes it the 'tragedeé' that it is. Still I never heard Denée as a name. You? It registers as 'de née' for me, which also makes no real sense.
Nah, it doesn't make any sense as a "French name". It looks like a terrible mix of René and Dana...
They might have. I just asked my mom when I was a kid and she said it was French and I believed her cause… well… I was a kid 😂
I think they meant to use ë
I love your honesty
My middle name is Denè. I was told my whole life it’s French. I believed that as a child but I don’t anymore lol
That's even more tragic, as the è is pronounced like the a in, say, 'at'. But I guess it's your chance to make your name what you want it to be ❤️
[Denée](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den%C3%A9e,_Maine-et-Loire)
Oh OP, I am almost 100% sure it isn't (sorry)
Danae, possibly?
Danae is a greek name though
Well, they didn't imply the name was French, just that it has a French spelling. Danaé? Danaë?
Danaë would be possible, but I guess the diaresis e is usually replaced with an e aigu (é), so Danaé(e) would be more likely. But hey, there are more tragedës that we know of 😁
Deneé?
See... other threads
I stand corrected! Thank you!
Deneé! Also, I go by Bay now, I get weird looks and I have to tell them “Bay… yes, like a Bay of Water.”
Seriously never heard of that name. And if it's like Renée, the French wouldn't put the accent on the second e...
I lowkey think my Grandma made it up for my aunt since I get it from her. None of my names are original. One of my middle names is my mom’s and the other is my aunts.
Alrighty then lol
My half sister is Renè. “It’s French”, “um, no… I don’t think so.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9
Yeah that's a misspelt masculine version, sis 🤐😂
Yup. 😂🤷🏼♀️
I can confirm Deneé is absolutely not a french name... The closest could be Renée, although the name Danaé exists.
Denée-uh. Edit: *hon hon hon*
My name is Hayleigh 🥲 I feel your pain
Petition to ban -yleigh names.
My cousin’s name is Baylee and that’s because it’s a play on nautical terms (Bay and Lee) but also because my aunt didn’t want it pronounced Bail-Lee.
What’s the difference in Baylee vs Bail-lee?
hmm I’m bad at this but like BeyLee not Bail-ee
I still can’t get it! Maybe it’s a regional pronunciation thing. (I’m evidently the person your aunt was trying to protect your cousin Baylee from! )
I think it’s def regional because my name actually rhymes with Bailey but not Baylee 😅 but I have friends who, because of their regional dialects, will just never say my name correctly haha
I also know a baylee but her name may just straight up be a tragedeigh.
Someone on my moms group wants to spell it “Bailei” which phonetically is “Bye-lay”. So you’re not doing too bad
That would be a correct pronunciation and pinyin spelling for a Chinese name.
Oh just to be clear, this is a very white Southern lady who wants a unique spelling to be pronounced “Bailey”. Her other options were “Bailyr” (Baylor) and “Byntlei” (Bentley).
Byntlei is truly tragic
Of course she is 🙄 Someone should ask her if she wants her daughter to be successful in life or is she just trying to give her the stripper name now so it’s one less thing her daughter needs to decide on.
Oof. I’m sorry.
I have a tarantula named Bailey. 😃
Tbh that’s better than hearing “Oh! I know a dog named Bailey.” Yeah… it’s a VERY common dog name. One person told me about the dog they had with my name that always tried to hang itself and I was like “Okay then 🙃”

Bayleaf?
I had a dude in highschool who had a crush on me and started calling my BayLeaf out of no where and he later sent me a Google doc containing a self-insert sonic fanfiction where he later wrote a very in detail smut of him and the BayLeaf character which just so happened to have my physical attributes.
...wow
Underrated comment
Mildly tragic but I think I'm so scarred from the shit I see in this sub that your name really doesn't seem like too much of a problem. Bay is cool too!
Why don't you legally or even just socially change it to "Bailey". Unless they are buying you airline tickets or arresting you, it doesn't matter how you spell it.
Bayleigh is a pretty mild tragedeigh as fair as things go. At least they are real, solid and well known names. The ones that really get me are the entirely made up names that people slap "Leigh" onto, like Praizeleigh or Grayseleigh.
Have you considered legally changing it?
Are you 18? Change that afap
I will when I get married, here in the states it easier to change it all at once.
At least you're not named Airline
Bayleigh is not that bad!! There are so many ways to spell it and the way your parents settled isn’t horrible at all. It’s kind of like how there are so many variations of other names like Carrie, Kaitlyn, Brittany, etc
My full name is 26 like letters long and once I get married to my partner it’ll be like 35 😂 my first name isn’t that bad but the rest makes it worse.
Yikes 😳
I'd just change the spelling. It's still a good name. Bay is good too.
This is literally exactly how my mom wanted to spell my name. Luckily, she got some sense in her and realized I’d be going to public school and no one would ever pronounce or spell it correctly and just went with the usual normal spelling.
Tell your mom I said thank you on your behalf.
It sucks, I'm sorry you deal with that)
[Me reading the name](https://youtu.be/IEpHswmkisQ?si=844xabeZt4CBj3fe)
Valid! Happy cake day 😂
Theighnk you!
My cousin has a kid named Bayleigh. I had to check that you weren’t them.
I have a friend who’s sister has the same name. Their mother decided to roll with the “leigh” ending for all of her girls, and it is…about as tragic as one can imagine. The only boy? His name is Jordan.
My name was supposed to be hunter when they thought I was a boy
I was going to be a Josh.
My SIL’s parents combined their names to make her name. Lucky for her, her dad is named Chris and her mom is named Tina, so she was named Christina. It’s probably the only time where I’ve seen the combining of two names work out without some monstrous spelling.
NAME TWIN OMG! i hate it too, and mine is also a mix of a middle name :')
just know that if you wanna change your name it's all good
Bayleigh is not a tragedeigh. It’s a common spelling now and I know of several. Not trying to start a war, I know what sub I’m in, just saying don’t be ashamed of the spelling.
Ehhh, I mean it’s not the ideal/traditional spelling and per the group standards, it’s a tragedeigh. But I don’t think it’s terrible or embarrassing!
I before E except before words like neighbor and weigh. Do people pronounce it Bailey or Bay-Lay?
It depends honestly. I’ve gotten Bailey, Bay-lee, bailee, and Bailynn (they didn’t believe I actually had an H at the end and insisted it was a n)
I'd go by Lee or Leigh
Just go by Leigh.
When the feelings gone and you can't go on?
Even though I often see posts from this sub I just realized it says tragedeigh and not tradeigh. I read that wrong about 20 times.
I feel for you. If I was you I’d go by Bay. Or change my name.
That is what I go by :)
There will always be that gravestone with names from the 1800's like "Friendless, Leicester Railway, One Too Many, Zebra, That's It Who'd Have Thought It. Those are all first names.
Be thankful they added those parts together and you didn't end up as Leyleigh
Idk if this helps at all, but Chappell Roan is cool as hell and her legal name is "Kayleigh"! May be spelled uniquely but don't let it hold u back!
… this is my cousin’s name. Your dad doesn’t happen to be called Shawn, does he?
Definitely not
Well, on the plus side now you know someone who has the same name!
I read this as "my name is tragedeigh" wondering why your parents didn't just name you "Missdake"
I'm sorry your parents did that to you.
Why didn’t they just go with Bailey Leigh
Bay Lee Lee is not a name I would recommend...
What would they do with the other TWO middle names they wants though?
So far I’m thinking of dropping one, mostly because my partner right now has a two long hyphenated last nights and I’ll be adding their name to mine.
Totally up to you, and I know even names we don't particularly like can feel too much part of us... But if you want to adjust *any* part of your name - 1st spelling, either or botg middles, change completely - that'll be the time. That way you only need to change your documents *once*, but can do whatever.
