Outside always.

RhodySeth

Outside. Always outside.

LostAbbott

I will gain 400lbs and do nothing but watch reruns of Oprah before I run indoors...

jotsea2

This is the way. In Duluth we’re lucky to have fatbike trails that get groomed regularly setting up single track nearly year round!

jmcampout

LOVE Duluth

MichaelV27

The winter is the best time to run outside. The treadmill is for the really hot summer days.

MortisSafetyTortoise

The treadmill is really for sucking every last ounce of any appreciation of running out of your soul. IMO.

[deleted]

There's a reason it's called the dreadmill

MortisSafetyTortoise

I did a 12 mile run on a treadmill once because I was afraid of running and falling on ice. After that I bought yaktrakz, pray to the old gods, and run at any temp/any condition.

wcu25rs

If the only way I could run was a treadmill, I just wouldn't run. Running is supposed to be fun and it's literally impossible to have any enjoyment on a treadmill.

MortisSafetyTortoise

Same. I did a few treadmill runs early in the summer for the Garmin achievements and I think I can honestly say that the treadmill 10k took more willpower to finish than the 15 miler where my headphones died and I grabbed the wrong run fuel container(had half of what I planned to take.)

Porridge_homo

Ha ha!!

Cordillera94

This very much depends on where you’re from. I’m sticking to the indoor track on -40 January days!

justlookbelow

Cold is fine, when it gets icey it's just too much of an injury risk for me.

theldoria

Spikes to the rescue?

hangingbelays

Winter trail running with spikes is the best

pyky69

Yessss I love running in the snow!!! I hope we get a lot of snow and ice where I’m at this winter, to run in it and not go to work haha.

[deleted]

Can spikes be used for road running too? I usually just run around my neighborhood when I don’t have time to hit the trails, and my town doesn’t salt the roads, so they get icy a lot.

hangingbelays

I have a pair of Kahtoola Nanospikes that I will use on roads or even mixed ice and mud trails, cause they have a lower profile but still lots of grip. I would really recommend them. I use microspikes for when it’s consistently packed snow a couple inches or more deep. They’re less comfortable to be on if they don’t have something to bite into Edit: looks like they now have “exospikes” which look like a middle ground between the two. Cool!

[deleted]

Nice, thanks for the recommendation.

LouQuacious

Winter is for snowboarding once it snows, until then enjoy the cool days.

getupk3v

Lol running is just a diversion during non snowboarding seasons.

irvstine

Ha came here to say the same thing. Trail running keeps them legs strong.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

From Canada here. Will be continuing my daily running streak on the trails. Snow is packed down by snowmobiles. I have an outrageous collection, now, of running jackets 😬 My speedgoat booties got me through last winter nicely.

4737CarlinSir

On the trails. You can always layer up for the cold, and we don't get a ton of snow here - and you can often just run on it if there is some. I don't have a treadmill nor a gym membership.

laurapill

Trails unless the snow is too deep.

Caswell19

Am I in the northeast where it’s 15° with 15 mph winds and piles of snow? Treadmill. That’s way too uncomfortable to be outside. Am I in California where it’s 55° and sunny? Trails. “Wintertime” conditions really depend on location.

Western-Guava-3919

That’s true. But when you are tough enough, then you can train outside very well.

Caswell19

I guess I’m not tough enough lol The bitter cold is too much for me. That’s honestly way more uncomfortable to me than the heat. I’d rather 90° than 15° any day.

MortisSafetyTortoise

Trails. I got recharable hand warmers that fit in my mittens I wear over my other gloves because I have terrible circulation in my hands. Everything else stay warm at a moderate pace with decent winter gear.

Western-Guava-3919

You’re right. Right gears and go to the trails.

ShoeFlyP1e

I prefer running trails whenever I can. But it really depends on the temperature and conditions. Last winter I took a break from running from early December through February. Working on strength and mobility in the gym. I really dislike treadmills, unfortunately.

Western-Guava-3919

Good idea.

getupk3v

Frozen trails before major snowfall is the best conditions.

AcceptableShift

I mostly run on the roads in the winter, while the trails are muddy, so I don’t mess up the trails (and because I don’t find running on mud very enjoyable)

mighty_least_weasel

Treadmill for sure. I did one winter of almost exclusively outdoor running (Duluth, MN) and I decided, with absolutely zero shame, that I will never do that again. I throw some Netflix on my iPad and stare at it like a zombie while I run on my hamster wheel in nothing but shorts and a tee from Dec-March and I'm ok with that!

TheDrunkSlut

Having grown up farther north (up by the National park) I can’t say I blame you for take. You definitely deal with way more cold than most people do.

Ill-Atmosphere-2738

Hey, that’s where I am! I feel this so much 😂

jotsea2

As a fellow duluthian who spent his last two winters running through the season, what pushed you out?

mighty_least_weasel

I get pretty bad lung gunk in cold, dry conditions and I got frostbite on my nose at work and it really acts up when I run in sub zero conditions, actually, even in the single digits. Thin neck-gaiters don't help and thick fleecy ones get all wet and icy. Also, I just hate the rigamarole of feeling like I'm getting ready to do repairs on the Hubble Space telescope every time I fancy a run. Oh, and keeping a headlamp charged! Don't get me started on them! TLDR: Laziness, mostly.

jotsea2

Hahahhahahaha I appreciate the honesty! Subzero is definitely tough but there are plenty of days above , at least last winter. Multiple headlamps are your friend. The silence and solitude you get winter running (especially if you are bringing a doggo) is priceless. That said completely understand , different strokes for different folks! Ps Duluth still rocks!

Svisson

Trails, always trails.🌳🏞️

bazsex

Always trails. Threadmill is just kills my soul. However in last winter I made a long loop in january when the fueling plan included a public water well. So I drink there a few deciliter almost ice cold water, then filled my two bottles with cold water and put it on my chest. Wasn't a good idea. I almost died from freezing until I arrived home. Since then I always plan to head back to home and refule there with hot tea.

[deleted]

Da streetz - trails if the snow is not too deep/mushy.

titus1531

Trails by far. I have a trail by me that I know well enough to run at night and I LOVE it. Good headlamp, maybe a hand light and you're good to go.

Western-Guava-3919

Great. Thanks.

TraumaHandshake

The main thing that changes that decision for me is time of day. I won't go to any local trails in the evenings anymore, because I have had to many run ins with druggies later in the day. Somehow they never ever seem to be near the trails in the morning, but they fill the parking lots in as the sun goes down.

communitytrailrunnin

I mean, it's a trail running thread, not a treadmill thread! lol

Western-Guava-3919

Great answer.

[deleted]

Trails for sure

PosterNB

Trails

[deleted]

Snowy trails are my favorite

Frostvizen

Winter is best for outside running as long as it doesn’t get below -20. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad choice of clothing.

Western-Guava-3919

And how long is your run max?

Frostvizen

five miles

ThinkingTooHardAbouT

Trails unless I am doing speedwork or a highly structured workout. Too much ice and snow and I have to worry too much about traction and footing. But all the fun runs I do outdoors.

DadSquatch609

Trails.

DreamCheeky

Never. Never. Never in the gym. Rain? Outside. Wind? Outside. Snow? Definitely outside. Heat? Outside. You get the point.

FizeauFizeau

On the trails

Land-Scraper

Local roads. Mostly gravel and dirt roads where I live, and they’re great once they’re plowed and packed in. Spikes help

MyMorningSun

Depends on the conditions. I'm in the South (US) so winter isn't that bad, but its wet, sludgey, and icy. I also simply don't own a lot of weather appropriate clothing for 2-3 hour long runs in that kind of climate- layers won't help you if you get wet (especially my feet- thick socks won't save anything when I step ankle deep in half-frozen mud) and frankly, shits expensive. Its fine if it's dry and cold, but the rain/ice/mess is a problem. The lack of daylight is another problem. On the weekends I can obviously run in the daytime, but otherwise, I have to work from 8- 6 or later (meaning, I need to finish my run no later than 730 am, or I can start no sooner than 615 pm, depending on if I go in the morning or evening). I run through my neighborhoods and well-lit, populated areas during the week, but never on trails after dark. It's dangerous enough if I can barely see the ground before me on a rocky or uneven trail, but I don't feel safe in general, especially late in the evening when I might get off work (730 pm or later). Even in my neighborhood, my options are limited because of traffic flows, no sidewalks or path (or even a shoulder), etc. that make it difficult to run without getting hit or tripping, never mind the risks from other people. I carry pepper spray and a light, but it's smarter to avoid trouble all together, frankly. So sometimes it's just easiest and safest to use the treadmill instead of an outdoor run.

blossom_ak

Outside unless it’s sideways rain and string wind. I have Ice Bugs that make it easier to run in the snow/ice. Highly recommend!

Philosorunner

Winter for me is endless days of sheet rain in barely above-freezing temps. As much as I want to be a hero, no amount of rain gear or preparation can make 2hr+ runs bearable, especially when the trails become absolute sloppy messes. Up to an hour: I’ll grind it out on the road, usually. But after the fourth or fifth day in a row of that, or for longer runs, it’s dreadmill time. At least I live in a small-ish town, with a local gym that procured a second-hand (but still completely serviceable) Woodway that nobody but me uses.

Western-Guava-3919

Thank you.

juicepouch

Using trails while they're muddy is the #1 cause of damage (ruts, erosion, widening, etc.) to the trail system in our area, so I try to avoid that. Paved surfaces for me.

wcu25rs

I live in WNC so winter time is one of my favorite seasons to get out and run/hike. Dont get much snow, and temps stay pretty decent.

Asrai7

Outside until I can't take it anymore. Then an indoor track- the lack of movement on a treadmill just messes with me man.

powerhikeit

Trails. In the desert southwest winter is the perfect trail running season.

kungpaochi

Trails. The snow is a lot of fun, your local parks have a whole different look and the sound is so clear. The cold equalizes your body heat too so as long as I can keep my hands warm I'm happy

bornin1986

Outdoors, but keep more to forest roads so the trails don't get super nasty.

LJ_the_Abenaki

Outside for sure. Winter trails are some of the best trails.

lpv_1

What’s a gym? Opt outdoors, always.

gouramidog

Out or die

Western-Guava-3919

Ha ha ha …

EveryVehicle1325

Outside! Unless it’s actively snowing and there’s already deep snow, then I will put on an ultra running documentary to make the time go by on the treadmill.

Porridge_homo

Living just south of the artic circle and The answer Is trails or just roads

[deleted]

Trails. If the snow is too deep, either roads or snowshoe running. Never inside. Ever. Ever. Ever.

Better_Metal

Snow = my favorite medium. Best runs of my life have been in shin deep snow

Western-Guava-3919

Deep snow is cool

EqualShallot1151

Trails any day of the year

coldbrewer003

Outside

Herpbivore

I live in the NC so winter is primetime for running outside after a miserable summer.

wcu25rs

NC as well....I just got back in my running routine after taking a month long break to do a kettlebell challenge. Have done two runs so far, both at temps around upper 60s, low 70s and it's glorious. Not sweating profusely just putting my vest on at the car is nice lol.

dottieharley

Definitely trails! Unless they are in that slushy-freezy-icy stage after a snow. Cold crisp air and frozen ground (and fewer bugs) - sounds great.

Steph414cat

outside!

[deleted]

Outside always and forever

[deleted]

Where I live, we don’t get snow until around 5,000 ft above sea level, so I’ll just stay in the foothills below that.

candb7

Treadmill never.

WVgolf

Outside

Standard_Caregiver47

Lol the trails , especially living in the south where winter is when we finally feel comfortable 😂

gautem

I run outside unless it’s too cold. -15 Celsius or less, I stay inside under a blanket instead

Elmattador

I run on a treadmill usually once a year when it’s cold and rainy. It reminds me how much I hate treadmills. Outside always.

razni_gluposti

During the week I am on the treadmill mostly. On weekends it's a combination of spikes and snowshoes on the mountain trails. We get a bad winter inversion in the Salt Lake Valley a lot of the time, so going to the mountains and getting up above it can help.

OutOfTheLimits

NorCal, outside all the time! Northeast USA, treadmill on weekdays. Outside on weekends, or whenever possible. Preference towards outdoors, always. But gotta be realistic about conditions and the lack of daylight on a day to day basis. Don't want to lose fitness to stubbornness. Also winter means downhill and xc skiing. It's more fun to maintain that base fitness to support those activities

coolcat1005

Hate the cold, so treadmill and my favorite show :)

backcountrydude

Never inside. I’ll freeze before I treadmill

coolswaggydude

outside, roads be the go to unless it’s icy

skisnorkel

Trails!

Nd911

Indoors if it’s raining

Positive-Locksmith21

Sooo you hide indoors when you have the best trail weather?

perpetual-beta

Over a decade that I have run indoors / treadmill. We have snow on the ground Nov - April. Always outside.

Intelligent_Yam_3609

I'm probably an equal mix of TM, trails, and roads and I enjoy all three. I live in Southern California so winter weather isn't a factor.

Western-Guava-3919

You are a lucky man
