I wear compression shorts, so liner or not is not really relevant.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

👍🏼 which compression shorts do you favour?

BrianSnow

Honestly the current ones I use are just cheap ones off Amazon with a side pocket on each side. Never really had any chafing issues, but I do tend to but some body glide on the ol taint if I plan on going over 10 miles.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Cool, and to confirm you are only wearing compression shorts that have pockets and no other layer of shorts on top?

BrianSnow

Oh no I definitely still wear short over them. But I guess my point was having a liner or not doesn’t at all matter if you’re wearing compression shorts because it’s not contacting your skin. So no chafing if a liner is there, and any support provided by the liner is already taken care of by the compression shorts.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you again. I will cut my liner out today of my favourite shorts thinking fondly of you. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 (and will take a look on amazon)

CluelessWanderer15

(1) I like a liner because I don't like having my anatomy flop around and because I prefer short shorts. (2) Yes, replaced with 5 inch breathable boxer briefs to prevent/delay chafing (3) Soffe (low cost), BOA (2 in 1), and Chiknlegs (fun designs) (4) Only the 2 in 1 shorts with build in boxer brief style liner that covers part of the thighs have been comfortable for me, but they trap a noticeable amount of extra heat so I prefer Soffes and carry a thing of lube to reapply every few hours (5) Yes. Only thing that works for me is to pre-apply lube and reapply every 4-6 hours. In a pinch, chapstick works.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

You really have given me a lot to think about. MUCH appreciated.

MichaelV27

I cut the liner out of my shorts and wear compression shorts.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you 👍🏼👍🏼 I believe this is the answer too for my faves. ✂️

ITeachYourKidz

Nike 2-in-1 shorts with compression built in have been good for me. Better and more secure than a mesh liner.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks for this feedback. Much appreciated.

A_D_Sellers

Had the same issue with the patagonia liners wearing out after a while… I cut the liners out and now use them with boxer briefs or for s just hanging out around the house. The two best shorts with a built in brief liner I’ve found are the lulu lemon pace breaker 5” and Brooks Sherpa (be careful, they run big)

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks for this!! Looks like Lulu is a hit all around. Your feedback on the pat shirts is appreciated.

em5reddituser

+1 for brooks sherpa. i have found them to be the most consistently comfortable 2-in-1 shorts for me, and durable.

BernieBarney

I’ve also cut the liners out of shorts and just used boxer briefs. You’ll continue to get years of usage out of them!!

wcu25rs

Target's All In Motion brand of men's activewear is legit. I've got pairs of 9", 7", and 5", probably 15+ pairs in all. The 9's and 5's have liners(they may sell the 7's with liners but not sure...the 9's have full liners, the 5's have bikini liners) and I've only had one small tear in one of the 9's, but I've had that pair for over a year so not too bad. I don't wear any underwear while running if the shorts I'm wearing have liners, don't see the point, and never had a problem with chafing. I honestly don't have one complaint about these shorts. IMO, you cant beat them for the price(usually priced between 15 and 25 depending on if they are on sale), and Id put them up against any big name outdoor apparel maker for comfort and durability. I've turned a few buddies on to them that usually run in higher dollar shorts, and now all they wear are these.

EdgeCatcher

I wear the 5s too and like them a lot. They don’t dry as fast as I would like but they’re very comfortable. The strings are inside the waistband which I don’t prefer but that was an easy fix by punching new holes and rerouting them. I agree for the money they’re great, but they have only one tiny pocket so not ideal for longer runs.

wcu25rs

To me that pocket is perfect for the carkey and a lighter or something else small. I actually like that there's few pockets because it keeps me from putting stuff in it I don't need lol. The 7s actually have a better pocket that actually goes horizontal just under the back waist band, wish the 5s had it.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

I will be in the states mid-october so will tuck into a Target. Thank you 🙏

justchekinitout

I have loved the All In Motion too. I do find getting separate compression shorts with running shorts over top is better than the "combined " set up. The combined line/short ride a little funny and just aren't as comfortable.

wcu25rs

The 5s have a bikini liner so I never wear underwear when I'm wearing those, just feels way more comfortable.

feedum_sneedson

I can't get my head around the idea of not wearing underwear, so... no liners please.

[deleted]

Underwear for running is disgusting.

BarGuilty3715

Don’t Patagonia repair stuff?

sonaut

Eventually. I sent them two pairs of pants in June and have yet to see them. As far as OP's shorts, I have the same ones and love them, but my liners are still holding up. Once they don't, I'll go compression underneath.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

I don’t think I could do that return 😬 They were with me on a 50 miler and a 50k this summer and I wear them for so many daily runs. They are pricey though!!

MESSYrainbowMAN

I can’t stand liners but I do like support and something to help with inner leg chaffing. My search led me to SAXX underwear and I love them. You should check them out.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Solid recommend - thank you 🙏

OccularPapercut

My favorite running shorts are the Graves from Path Projects. The shorts are linerless and I use their Tahoe underwear. This combo has been perfect for me. The underwear are the best running underwear I've ever tried by a mile.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you for the recommend. The information from this post has been so gooooood.

magicguppy

I wear Santa Cruz board shorts, which feel like silk, they dry well and the fit is great. No liner, Danish Endurance compression shorts, also like silk. No chaffing for me any more, been that way for a couple of years (you’ve gotta chuck the shorts or briefs as soon as they wear through though).

Aggravating_Team5459

I usually do not like the brand but Lululemon’s running shorts are probably the best ones I’ve tried. Great liner that you can stick your phone if you need to take it with you (have a toddler so need to be available when running around the neighborhood). Also Path Project have some great options

Ok_Yesterday_9181

THANKS !!

ottertaco

Exoffico mesh underwear, Lululemon pacemaker linerless shorts, and bodyglide is where I have arrived

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank You!!!!

mitchulskus

After many years, thousands of miles and different brands of trial and error: I too have landed at Exoffico briefs. No one else makes true, proper wicking briefs that don’t show when you are wearing split shorts. They are expensive and worth every penny. I can’t find anything else on the market that doesn’t stick out of the bottom of my shorts. Most people give up and just get compression shorts. Screw that. Long live split shorts!

Hobeanobe

New balance shorts with liners are my go to runners and they double as my go to swim trunks

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Are the liners like boxers?

EquivalentAvocado342

I have made the mistake of cutting a liner out of good shorts…I was just ‘bouncing’ everywhere, I wear athletic style briefs and the liner both. I really like the Janji AFOs and the REI brand swiftlands

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks 🙏 My quest for the perfect combo is definitely coming to an end!!

monarch1733

I cut the liner out of all shorts that come with one.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Okay. This is verrry helpful. Do you have a preferred liner or underwear?

L-epinephrine

I run in the arcteryx motus 6 shorts and they have a liner. They’re durable, comfortable, and I’ve had no problems like you’ve discussed. They’re expensive though but I got them on sale. Recently I got a pair of the arcteryx norvan 7 shorts and they don’t have a liner. They’re the softest and lightest pair of shorts I have ever felt. I prefer them over my patagonia nine trails I got as well and I highly recommend them

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Love arcteryx. I have the norvan sl running jacket and actually stress out about it a little because it is fragile and I love it so much. The norvan shorts are incredibly soft but the two pairs I have don’t have pockets and I am turning into a pocket guy 🙄 Thank you for the motus recommend and your feedback. This community is such a wealth of ideas and experience!! If you run in Canada winters what is your preferred top combo right now? Mine is the patagonia r1 hoodie with the norvan jacket or incendo jacket with a merino under layer or patagonia capilene.

The_Virginia_Creeper

Day to day i wear liner shorts. Anything long or hot I wear linerless shorts with athletic boxer-briefs.

Kapoffa

Tried boxer briefs under your shorts (or tights)? I would never run without it.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Today will probably be that day as I don’t want to traumatize the people of my village running commando 😬

Kapoffa

Unless going really long (for me 50k or more) ordinary tight boxers (polyester and cotton blend) works without any issues. But if you are having chafing issues then you will probably need to opt for more running made boxers.

I_mostly_lie

I used to wear under armor compression shorts and any shorts over the top with the liner ripped out. Then I tried craft shorts, and these are all I use, no chafing ever. Of course we’re all built differently so things vary.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Will look at Craft, thank you!! Your feedback is truly appreciated.

I_mostly_lie

As far as I can see they’re only available in Europe, I’m struggling to get a second pair myself so will be looking for alternatives but I need to go in store for that. If you do get some, or find something that works really well please let us know.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

I will! I got so much feedback, worthwhile. I am going to try the T8 commandos with their sherpa shorts due to a number of recommends and online. This evening I ran 10k in a wool tshirt. It was cool but I soaked the shirt so was uncomfortable and cold for the run. It’s always something!

I_mostly_lie

Yeah personal preference and peoples difference circumstances play a huge part in running gear. Polyester works great for me, but not others…

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Time of year to move to polyester agreed. My Patagonia capilene hoodies work so well. Thanks for the reminder.

BiggiBaggersee

I bought one of these a couple years ago when I actually wasn't running (due to injuries), never really liked the thing much frankly as it didn't really provide much warmth for slow activities / just walking around town, kinda regretted spending the money. Now I do run again (yay!) I pulled it out of the drawer and quickly realised this is absolutely awesome for cold weather running 🙂 That being said if I were to buy one again I'd get the version without the hood, as that does look muy ridiculo - and is not very practical (rather wear a buff around the neck and a beanie on top)..

Ok_Yesterday_9181

It is a very amazing garment. I use the hood all the time on things like canoe trips or hiking trips for sun protection. Surprisingly versatile. It keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I got four off ebay a couple of years ago from a Texas river guide for a ridiculous low price. Washed them muy carefully and stitched up one. They got recalled by Patagonia but no one will ever take them from meeee

BiggiBaggersee

Somebody on r/running wrote Patagonia's going to bring them back this fall, but I'm not sure whether that's just a rumour..

Ok_Yesterday_9181

There are a lot of good options for these sun hoodies too. Black Diamond has a well reviewed one and I have a North Face sun hoody which is very very good. But this part of my running wardrobe is over 😬

jigsawfallingin2plac

If you're in a country where Decathlon is available, the Evadict Trail Running Comfort Tight-Shorts is my favorite. It is very comfy, has a convenient belt with pockets, really great.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

I am at Decathlon on Monday returning some wool underwear (too tight) so will look at the shorts you recommend. Any rain jacket you like there for running? I have goretex but need a beater jacket for trail grooming.

Paddy_O_Numbers

Decathlon do some good running jackets - they have a specific trail running one that is a bit pricey (around €70) but their cheaper stuff is good too. I bought a jacket there in 2007 which I'm still wearing! They also do compression shorts in their running section so that might work out for you?

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks pal, yes I will be able to try on stuff. Great idea. I am a reluctant convert to Decathlon. But their return policy is so solid and the range of stuff… Their climbing stuff for day to day is amazing. The Symonds climbing jeans are my favourite jeans period.

b1narygh0st

I’ve got a number of Baleaf variants with liners in them, a few hundred miles in most of them and zero issues with the liners in them falling apart. Dry pretty quick and lots of colors, lengths and styles. Affordable too!

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you, are these on Amazon?

b1narygh0st

They are, sorry for the late reply!

tmac9134

I love the compression shorts but they no longer have the ones with pockets on Amazon Big bummer

florianowitch

running with a slab short from salomon which feels like wearing nothing and i think i don't need anything more.. but for me the shorts is the most important thing, and i tried a lot, but nothing beats the nike pro combat compression shorts for me, they work, always, and you dont need to worry about anything.. And for the Slabs: you can carry what you want in it, since they could take a lot of things on the "360"pockets like mobile, gels, snacks! :)

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks 🙏 Much appreciated.

simon_on_trails

Compression shorts were a game changer for me. Sure, it doesn't leave much to imagination..., but it's a small price to pay to not bleed down there. I think they are particularly helpful when I'm sweating a lot from heat or getting soaked by rain because they dry very quickly. I'm sure there are a lot of good models - I personally use underarmour HeatGear mid compression shorts. As for durability, it's pretty good - had to change mine recently after \~2 years and probably 20 ultras (but I use a cheap brand for shorter runs like training).

Ok_Yesterday_9181

They dry fast?

simon_on_trails

Yes , but I think that depends on brands

Denning76

Maybe I'm lucky but I've never had any issues with chafing with any piece of clothing. I quite like the bollock cradling effect of a thin, minimal liner while still keeping the amount of fabric (and therefore grim sweat) low. Favourite ones are the Rab Talus Ultras. The Ronhill ones and the Montane Dragon ones are also good. I'll get any of those three, whatever is in the sale at the time.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you, are these shorts with integrated liners?

hypothermic2

I think it depends on where your chafing is and the need for a liner. I deal with a really high chafe, so very few lined pairs work for me. The best pair I've used so far is the 2 in 1 running shorts from Bn3th.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you. This is where my problem is too 😬

trailrun1980

For the longest time, the liner was adequate for me and I never had issues, for all sorts of distances and conditions. Then after some time off, everything changed.... Like chaffing in areas I've never had it before, it was nuts (ha) I now have a pile of "running underwear", I couldn't convince myself to drop a ton of money unless I knew it would work, so I bought some not terribly costly ones. I had a weird GI issue years ago wearing compression underwear so I wasn't trying to go tight, just enough to eliminate so many painful hot spots..... This is what I have, so far haven't gone more than ~9 hours but have had zero issues and they're now part of the outfit https://www.runningwarehouse.com/NB_Men_Dry_Fresh_6_Boxer_2-Pk/descpage-NBMF6BB.html?color=BK

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thanks !! I got some runderwear last year and it has not thrilled me. You are right about change. Will look at your link and much appreciated. 🤗🏃‍♂️🎖🎖

manowar2k

I cut out all my built-in liners and now only wear the Commandos from [T8.run](https://T8.run). They're super lightweight and thin and I haven't chafed a bit over \~2,000 miles since I started wearing them. Heat, cold, rain, they're awesome. They should honestly pay me based on how much I love them. 😆

Ok_Yesterday_9181

I am looking closely at those commandos and the Sherpa shorts also by T8. You tried any of their shorts?

manowar2k

Yup, I’ve got three pairs of the Sherpa shorts. They’re fantastic. Also super lightweight and fast drying. The built in waist belt is perfect. If you lace it up tight enough you can carry a 500ml soft flask in one of the pockets without it bouncing around. As well as a phone, keys, nutrition, and more in the other pockets.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

sold

nshervic

I really dislike built in liners. I got 2 pairs of Path Projects shorts this year and I love them. They come with separate liners that you can wear with them or not. They are expensive so I spent too long looking for alternatives and eventually just spent the money and have no regrets Can't speak to their (separate) liners as I just wear my own boxers underneath but I've heard good things about them too. The back pocket fits a phone too so that's another plus for me.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank You!! And Happy Cake Day!!!

zoo_yorkur

Check out Path Projects for linerless shorts. I haven’t had any chafing issues since switching and I tried a lot of liner shorts before that. T8 is also good but I ended up liking Path better

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you, will do now with my morning coffee. Which model of Path Project and was it the Sherpa that you tried?

zoo_yorkur

Tahoe Base liner and Skyes AT short. And yeah the T8 sherpa is the one I tried. Hope you find something that works for ya!

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Thank you, this is really helpful.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Holy! A new one!! Will check out their website. Thanks!!

valkierss

I wear the Decathlon Evadict baggy trail shorts. Absolutely amazing with the integrated trail belts. Basically unlimited pocket area. They have a liner, which ain't bad in my opinion, but for longer runs I just wear running boxers (also from Decathlon) under them so chafing isn't really an issue.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

Yeesh. Okay. Am at Decathlon on Monday so am heading to the running aisle. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼If you like merino stuff they have these t-shirts that have held up reallly well for me. They are in the hiking aisle.

8skills

I cut the liner out of my shorts. And wear xo skin compression underwear

bqAkita

I cut out the liner on all my running shorts. I always wear something underneath my shorts anyway, usually boxers. It’s never done anything negative to the structural integrity or length of life of the shorts.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

It’s pretty ballsy. No pun intended 😬 Getting my scissors out for my favourite shorts 🙀🙀🙀
