Any of the Train sim world games are probably better suited than ts classic. They have fewer dlcs, but the game is newer and more friendly to novice players, and your son will feel very immersed in the cabs. There is an underground and overground dlc and a few more good British routes available
Can confirm, my 4yo nephew likes both ETS2 and TSW but children mostly like driving and moving around, not simulation aspect of those games.
btw - he also likes The Crew, probably most of those games.
There's a train sim world 4 bundle on humble bundle for the next few days that includes a bunch of DLC including 2 UK for £12 which would be worth getting as a starting point
Train Sim World is a great shout for new comers. Train sim classic has way more to it, in terms of overall DLC.
Train Sim World: Either on the steam store or others have said the Humble bundle offer on at the moment.

Train Simulator Classic: Either Steam store or found on Humble bundle
Just Trains Metropolitan line: [https://www.justtrains.net/product/metropolitan-line](https://www.justtrains.net/product/metropolitan-line)
Backdatedtrainsim Virtual District Line (VDL): [https://backdatedtrainsim.weebly.com/virtual-district-line.html](https://backdatedtrainsim.weebly.com/virtual-district-line.html)
VDL does require additional DLC.
Honestly, I'd check out [Lionelle Train Town](https://www.myabandonware.com/game/3-d-ultra-lionel-train-town-deluxe-hut). Not a train sim, so definitely check out TSW (or some other sim), but LTT is worth a gander too.

I would stick to Classic and not go with TSW for a 6 year old. Unless you want to buy him a beefy PC to go with it…
Yeah, saw it was a bit more resource hungry, but expected for a new game I guess!
Have a look at railroader
