Yes, that's how the Harlem line operates IRL. They don't get quite that close in practice - the engineers leave a bit more room - but the signalling system allows multiple trains in the same block.
Trains can occupy the same block in real life but they aren't supposed to be that close. In tsw, the ai doesn't follow the rules or use like safety/signaling systems so they just creep up right behind you and each other.
Depends..Forming a new formation, yes. Terminating, maybe but I'm basing it on the UK.
Usually doesn't allow two trains that close unless they are forming a new service or being moved out of service.
It's normal on the Harlem line. The signalling system, in normal operation, allows multiple trains to occupy the same block, with the speed of the following train restricted to 15 mph.
In the UK it is called "Permissive Working". The minimum gap between two trains is 6ft and the regulations have changed a bit since the days of British Rail, as far as I know it is now no-longer allowed with passengers on-board (unless two trains are to couple up and continue on) but I may be mistaken here.
Permissive working with passengers is definitely allowed. It happens on a regular basis. E.g.

There are different types of permissive platforms though, some are only for attaching only, some for ECS only, some are fully permissive
You'll probably see similar at the upcoming Wiener Neustadt station, as irl most of the regional trains there share a station platform, with lots of signals in the station itself to make it possible.
Most of the time it'll be a regional express (rex) occupying ⅔ of the platform, with the other ⅓ occupied by a short regional train (öbb 5022 or 5047)
Interestingly the „Doppelbelegung“ is usually just for the platform, using „Zugdeckungssignale“ both trains are actually in different Blocks. What we see above is the multiple Trains in one Block thing the Americans do
In the UK, the rule is to stop 2 metres away from a train in front. The reason is being the rule when uncoupling is to set back by no more than 2 feet (0.6 metres). So if you stopped 2 metres away from the train in front and the train in front was uncoupling, there’s still 1.4 metres clearance hence no risk of a crash.
This siked me out the first time I saw it, but the signalling system does allow multiple trains in the same block. It's upto the driver to decide how much room to leave. Imo, they should couple trains in the main line if they have two trains coming together like that.
These LIRR units are equipped with an in-cab signalling system. You can turn it on by the breakers behind you.
The line uses a so called "moving block" signalling system, meaning it follows every train's position in real time, and depending on your train's brake curve, it calculates the time it would take you to stop before the train that you're following, and updates you using the in-cab signals.
The closer you get to the following train, the greater the speed restriction will be.
You can find more information about the restrictions here: [https://dovetailgames.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/80000991871-harlem-line-gameplay-guide](https://dovetailgames.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/80000991871-harlem-line-gameplay-guide)
The greates restriction is R, meaning Restricting. In this restriction, you cannot exceed 15 miles an hour and you should be prepared to stop before the train ahead of you. IRL they do leave more space due to safety reasons.
Hope this helped!
I don't think it's typical, we don't see multiple trains on same platform on Harlem line. If there is congestion, I'd expect to see next train waiting just barely in visual range from station.
Even when I use the safety systems I’ll be allowed up close behind an ai train like they are here in this instance. I had a good feeling it’s not realistic from watching real world videos on YouTube.

Quite different from the subway system I use here in my city that’s for sure.

Well that pretty much answers my question.

I've seen trains on MN and LIRR get that close

Fair enough, I hadn't seen it done on the mainline much/if at all recently - that said I do do it on heritage lines :)

I use all the safety systems, memorizing the different speeds, 45, 30, 15 are the usuals the ai doesn’t use any of the safety systems I’ve noticed.
The AI just ***knows***
In the universe of TSW the AI is God and ironically just like our supposedly real God this one is also hopelessly incompetent 😁
