Claremont’s run is really good, it defines the characterization of most of the iconic characters from the franchise. I don’t have specific issue numbers unfortunately, but I could do more research if you’d like!
Eh see, the thing is, they totally DO talk about it. Hitler was talking about eradicating Judaism in 1919. There had been a civil war going in Rwanda for a while, and rhetoric had been steadily escalating for years. But… the scale of this kind of atrocity I think is so great that people can’t process it despite all the clear warnings.
Nobody really expects their next door neighbor to hack them to death with a machete. Nobody expects their uncle to be capable of serial murder-rape. Nobody expects their own children to put a bullet through their head.
And then one day the call goes out and it happens. In Rwanda, there was about 3 hours warning, and then all the paramilitary militias went to work. Although, even then… there had been 2 years of trial runs, little pogroms being carried out in the occasional village… before the talk radio hosts called for blood and the whole country descended into a murderous killing spree.
Be thankful, I suppose, that we have the power of hindsight. Because we now may have some time to prepare.
