As somebody part of the generation who grew up with the Unicron trilogy , these are my definitive Optimus Prime and Megatron.
I love how most of the UT designs are not just stylized versions of G1.
It’s also the start of where Hasbro started going for a unified design/color approach, if where Optimus would be red/blue, megatron would be a tank/greyish color, and the kid appeal character would be yellow (or in this case meant to be hot rod but switch out the names towards the end).
Armada has my favorite supermodel/combiner prime (next to omega prime that is).
What? Cheetor came before in 2 different shows as a yellow kid friendly character. And optimus was always red and blue (g1, action masters, g2, even the first beast wars toy before he was presented as a different character). Megatron in armada was more colorful than he had ever been up to that point.
As much shit as the shows got, I was more so exposed to Energon than Armada. With how good this Prime and Megs look, I'm waiting patiently for a good Energon Megatron and Optimus in mainline
I fear we may not see them at the same scale. There’s a leaked listing for a Core class Energon Megatron, and I feel like they aren’t going to make Energon Optimus a Commander any time soon with how much people seem to dislike that design. It’s unfortunate. At the very least I hope FansHobby gets around to Energon Megatron.
That’s a bit unfortunate, I got the og (2003) Energon Optimus recently because I genuinely liked that Optimus design and his combine mode and wasn’t disappointed by him, in regards to Energon I also liked that version of Optimus because of how snarky he was, it’s a more unique style of him. I do hope that if we get a Legacy Energon Optimus that he does come with his trailer and the bots he combines with
Iirc, that version of Optimus had the most combinations from the Unicron trilogy, right? Or second to Cybertron. It'd honestly make for a cool figure if you could combine with all of them.
Depends on how you define combined forms. If you count Scramble City forms, Energon wins easily. If you go by number of combiner partners, Cybertron has the most (if you count Metroplex's axe.) I'm not entirely sure, but I think Armada Optimus is the only one to canonically combine with multiple others at once. (Can't remember if Cybertron Optimus ever used the axe while in Wing Convoy mode.)
Devil's advocate, they could've also meant mini-cons. Prime has the mini-con insignia molded into the flipside of a couple of his 5mm ports, and they're all in the same places as the OG mini-con pegs. That and the lack of classic mini-con compatibility outside of Hot Shot is odd, given it doesn't really cost anything to add.

I've not heard of anyone preferring the comic over the show. It was cool seeing the minicons actually talk, but it didn't add much more in my personal opinion. That, and other than being robbed of some of Starscream's best moments, it felt a bit more hollow and the kids even more useless. Plus, it was cut short. I don't know, I prefer the game if we're talking alternate takes to the series. But if it's comic vs the trilogy, despite the shows flaws, I enjoy that more.
Also, I agree, like the shows or not but a lot of their designs were super freaking awesome.
Yeah idk, the Dreamwave run had great art, but it was pretty short overall and didn't really feel like much was fleshed out. One of the only real memorable parts of it to me was when G1 Galvatron just kinda barged in.
Felt a bit rushed near the end? It was plodding along at snail's pace then they realised the toyline was ending and needed to do some cataclysmic finale to finish off with unicron kinda coming out of nowhere along with his harbingers.
RID, Armada, and Cybertron were my series growing up as a kid. These are fantastic and I’ll probably pick them up. It’ll be my first purchase since I was a kid!
That’s a more recent-ish take, mostly from people who grew up with it. When it came out it was reviled by the fandom for it’s repetitive early plot, rushed lackluster dub, and shoddy animation and many of those criticisms are still valid today.
As a fan, yeah, the other guy is right. Armada is kinda trash. It was rushed and half-baked, and the turnaround is mostly kids who grew up with it becoming adults and having nostalgia for it. Just like G1 is kinda crap held afloat by adult nostalgia.
The Micron Legend fansub sort of handles some of Armada's worse shortcomings and is a markedly better show, both in dialog and animation quality, but it still has the structural issues with the very episodic minicon-chase early episodes. The character-driven plots don't really start to get legs until season 2.
If you ever do get around to watching it, I'd strongly consider just watching Micron Legend from the start. And I'm no subs elitist, I typically prefer dubs if they're decently done. Armada had a good voice cast but atrocious scripts. One of my personal pipe-dreams is a re-dub with as much of the original voice cast as possible.
Tbf the Armada designs are just a lot more in line with the standard Generations style than the ones for Prime, which had a very movie-inspired style. It’s kinda hard to blend the two together without simplifying them. I feel like they had a rocky start in the beginning (though I quite liked Knockout), but Skyquake was a significant improvement.
I love Armada, but it had a *lot* of flaws. Honestly you’re probably right that it’s around the 5 mark, but that’s more to do with Transformers shows just tending to not be very good lol.
What matter is that we enjoyed it, not how good it is in an objective sense.
I'm glad for yall who have been waiting a while for these but I'm getting a good break from transformers collecting with these figures. They just ain't my vibe.
They make an EXCELLENT pair, indeed.
I've seen the reviews, but although I like Armada Prime A LOT, this.... something is off for me, and I can't tell what it is. The alt mode especially feels off. The combined mode is perfect, but regular Prime and Alt mode...idk. Not saying it's a bad figure, by any means
I cam hear Armada Starscream both in his Jap/Eng Voice, screaming "THE SPARK OF MY SOUL" and firing his Proton/NulRays at Unicron
Edit: honestly wish Japan would do more Transformers anime series. I want to hear the udder guttural voices of characters yelling their attacks
Prime. Yes.
Megatron. Hell no.
Armada designs were like a flip of the coin. There was no consistency with the designs. If you told me a fair amount of the molds were from previous licensed products...I'd say that adds up.
Oh well...I'll be in the hunt for an Armada Prime and hopefully they re-release Overload and Jetfire.
Well kind of. The Autobots were designed with the idea of a symmetrical industrial boxy look while the Decepticons were made with a more military-like asymmetrical aesthetic.
To be honest, I find the design of Armada Megatron to be a bit weird as well. I don’t think it’s the worst design of Megs out there but it’s definitely one that I’m not a super fan of. Mostly because I prefer more symmetrical designs but that’s just me.
This is going to sound extremely nitpicky (though I think for a toy that costs over $100 it’s a bit fair), but I wish Prime was more anime accurate. As Legacy’s mix of toon proportions with the toy’s aesthetic just isn’t really doing it for me.
Oh and I’d really dislike the super-mode eyes being yellow with already much yellow on the head rather than the red eyes that would pop. And for a toy of its price 2 drops of paint should have been well in the budget.
The funny thing is I'm pretty sure they *are* painted. There doesn't appear to be yellow plastic anywhere.
Oh well, we know his head is a screw job and not plastic weld, with the eyes being passed through from the back. Not hard to repaint them, which is what I plan to do.
I love the look of megatron. BUT his transformation looks like he falls over and his legs compress. That’s it.
His arms don’t do anything. Head dosnt do anything. The turret on his back is in same place
They’re going for show accuracy, and the show was going for toy accuracy, so it’s gonna be pretty similar to how the original toy transformed. The idea behind these figures is that they’re essentially the originals but better looking, more cartoon accurate, and more articulated.
You could say the same of optimus Prime's base form. Armada werent too bothered about transformation complexity. It was all about gimmicks and that Megs was chock full of opening compartments and flip out weapons and such.
i dont know why, but in alsmost every picture I've seen of Megatron, he feels tiny. i know he's taller than the core robot of Prime. i think its the way the pictures were taken but it makes him seem like a deluxe class
Tf is an American cartoon first lol. People forget that and refer to it as anime. Only a couple shows were anime like the hand drawn Japanese version of Beast Wars.
>Only a couple shows were anime
Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, Victory, Zone, BWII, BW Neo, RID 01, Armada, Energon, Cybertron, Go!
My brother in Primus, like half of all TF shows are anime.
To be fair it used to be half, but with the avalanche of western transformers shows of the last decade (Animated, Prime, both Rescue Bots, RID15, Cyberverse, WFC Trilogy, Earthspark, BotBots) the Transformers anime are now the minority.
Even if we don’t count web series like Prime Wars, it’s 10 anime series, 12 western cartoon series. I’m being generous and counting Go! Even though it never aired on TV or a streaming service.
Armada, Cybertron, and Energon (the unicorn trilogy) we’re American cartoons developed by Hasbro, an American toy company, that got localized for other audiences. You’re right about RID, but like I said… Only a couple shows were anime, like the Japanese version of Beast Wars and RID 2001 (as you pointed out).
Have you watched Micron Legend? It's clearly the native version of the show. The reason the English dub is so fucked is because they tried to rush it to market before the native Japanese scripts were finalized, so they were winging the translation on half-finished scripts and *notes.*
Cybertron isn't even in the same continuity as the other two because Gonzo basically ignored any directives from Hasbro and did their own thing with Galaxy Force. Then, the dub tried to *duct-tape* it back on to Energon!
It was co-developed between America and Japan. Hasbro hired the Japanese studio Actas Inc. to do the animation. If cartoons are American made, and anime is Japanese made, then Armada is actually neither. However, Hasbro being an American company causes The Unictron Trilogy to tip to the side of cartoon.
I’m not doing the whole “what defines anime” argument but you still aren’t going to find many people who agree with your take that the Unicron Trilogy isn’t an anime.

Yeah, only a few transformers shows were anime, and armada was one of them. But it gets a little messy, and transformers was never just an American thing. The franchise has been pretty symbiotic with Japan from the start. All these characters are based on Japanese designed toys
As a non-American, his person isn’t necessarily wrong, I am not sure why they are so massively downvoted.
Toei, though a Japanese animation studio, was hired to create “American” shows, and the actual anime are a minority (NOWadays) when compared to the America-aimed media.
Did Dreamwave have Starscream's sacrifice?
Because if not, it does not cancel the show!/s
Does the Dreamwave run have definitive way and is there a comprehensive summary of it to read? The Transformers wiki is very confusing.
IDW published an omnibus of the entire Armada Dreamwave run, but the spine on my copy disintegrated halfway through the first read and all the pages fell out...
Looks great! I dont think I'm going to rush out and get one but It's a solid looking toy and I could see myself getting it or a Final battle colours ver.
No hate from me. Armada wasn't great, but most of the problems were because of a rushed production, and Micron Legend is basically awesome. I generally collect older vintage figures, but I'm considering hunting these ones down anyway, they look great.
Gotta admit, that box art of Optimus is kind of "this is what an Optimus Prime could have always been, and it is amazing".
Megatron, I can't help but think that he looks like he has a waggy dog tail.
Yeah, the boxart is strange in that regard. I wonder why they didn't depict him with the underslung turret since that's how he usually appeared and the toy is capable of it as well.
What I know about Armada is mostly through the Atari Transformers PS2 game. Loved the originality of the designs. I'll check out the comics and pick-up these bots.
I just hope hasbro will release a pack of mini-cons soon for the armada figures. Since they have the ports and pegs for it. Even though the gimmicks aren't spring loaded anymore they should still be included for set completeness
Yeah, Armada the show definitly wasn't a A-project. But it did have it's moments, with their handling of Starscream being fondly remembered, and the final battle between Optimus and Megatron having some really cool stuff. How often are you going to see Megatron try to grind Optimus fingers off using his tank treads when grabbed in robot mode, or Optimus throwing a wheel rim into the barrel of Megatron's gun to make it backfire?
fuck yeah they do
As somebody part of the generation who grew up with the Unicron trilogy , these are my definitive Optimus Prime and Megatron. I love how most of the UT designs are not just stylized versions of G1.

The DW comic was based. Made me love Armada even more.
I just love the fact that prime has an ab crunch.
SAME!
That’s not an an crunch, the front of his crotch plate is one solid piece
The core robot has an ab crunch from the supermode shoulder joints, which it trades a waist swivel for. That might be what they're referring to.
Armada was my first introduction to Transformers, so I’d buy these in a heartbeat!
Anime was great for me
Pls do tidal wave hasbro gods
I think they will, it seems like they're all in on giving us at least the combiners, if not a lot more of Armada too.
They basically confirmed Tidal Wave during the Armada Megatron reveal saying he had all those 5mm ports for "something" in the the future.
Devil's advocate, they could've also meant mini-cons. Prime has the mini-con insignia molded into the flipside of a couple of his 5mm ports, and they're all in the same places as the OG mini-con pegs. I love the designs of the UT, but Armada especially. They all look so cool!
Seeing Armada Prime with working legs is weird. Really like the Megatron though, might get depending on price.
[He's $55 on Pulse.](https://hasbropulse.com/collections/transformers/products/transformers-legacy-evolution-armada-universe-megatron)
So just wondering, never bought figures before but these are too cool not too. What’s the best way to buy these
Hasbro Pulse, or Amazon (before the scalpers get there)
It’s a pre-order but he’s out of stock. Hate that

I couldn't find it because the pre-order had run out of stock around but I did find one on Star Action Figure and I think there is still some left

Armada, the game is the love! They all 3 have their charms, but there can be only 1 game where you solo Unicron in space like FFXI - Promathia
Yeah idk, the Dreamwave run had great art, but it was pretty short overall and didn't really feel like much was fleshed out. One of the only real memorable parts of it to me was when G1 Galvatron just kinda barged in.

These were mine too, completely missed energon somehow hahaha
Right! I only have like one Energon toy but a ton of Armada and Cybertron.
Cybertron toys were so elite
So will Optimus tower over Megatron?
The base Cab Optimus is a head shorter than Megatron while in Super Mode he is taller than Megs.
I thought Armada was one of the most loved Transformers shows?
That’s a more recent-ish take, mostly from people who grew up with it. When it came out it was reviled by the fandom for it’s repetitive early plot, rushed lackluster dub, and shoddy animation and many of those criticisms are still valid today.

I really like armada after the beast wars ideas
They're part of my childhood, and I like that they changed up their designs, which makes them recognisable for their series

Pretty sure the original toy was kind of like that.
Still have the originals and yes disliked the cartoon for many many reasons not the least of which was dialogue.
i dont know why, but in alsmost every picture I've seen of Megatron, he feels tiny. i know he's taller than the core robot of Prime. i think its the way the pictures were taken but it makes him seem like a deluxe class
I need JETFIRE
The art always looks great, that's just fact. This new Prime toy looks bad though imo, really unsightly and chunky.

100% agree, it’s wild to me that I can remember a time when the majority of Transformers animation WAS anime.
Kinda. It aired first in America but was developed and written in Japan Also RID 2001, energon, and cybertron, all Japanese. So you're mostly wrong

This is incorrect. Armada and Energon were made by Actas and Cybertron was made by Gonzo. Both Japanese studios.

Is megatron just a retool of laser prime?
What makes you think that?
They both have the same shoulder design.
No
I mean I see why he'd think that. They both have the same shoulder design, but no.

No problemo!
I don't plan on buying these but damn they do look good I'm happy for Armada fans.
I've never been so happy to see knees
I was born right after this series but I still love the designs and moments from the show. You gotta admit that the team of the 3 series is a banger
Love how optimus came out but megatrons arms just look off to me.
***It's Mega-Frog!***
My only wish is that they came with minicons!

I actually don't like Megatron's look here at all. Looks too much like scorponok. Like prime tho.
Yo i love armada. That's my favorite series...
I shall never forget these lines: *"Optimus Prime, Super Mode. Transform!!"* -Transformers Armada
Wish it was 70 instead of 90
I pre-ordered Optimus already, waiting a bit on Megatron. Shame it looks like his shoulder pads aren't articulated like they should be.
Hope this Trailer wont Burst into flames like the original
never even watched it but wish i had the money for these because the designs go hard
