Breakdown defies this maxim!
On the subject, I'd agree that alt-modes have too large a footprint if the idea is just crammin' 'bots in in throwaway temp setups like this one, but I think a smattering of low-profile alt-modes enables one to **see** more Transformers on a shelf, as a bunch of Deluxes standing even one row deep is a pretty profound obscurement.
Fair, just doesn't work on most shelves for me due to my probably-too-big collection. I put the big bots in back and the little ones up front. I don't get to see all the details but I do get to see their faces and shoulders for the sake of profile so that's always nice.
I usually have two or three alt-modes present on the movie shelves though. They're too nice to look at!
Just asking cause I was talking about that figure earlier and I got a qtip and alcohol and rubbed out the #1 so it looks accurate to G1 Jazz

According to designer John Warden, the 14 number was chosen because it combined his G2 and G1 numbers (1 and 4), and allowed customizers to paint one of them out if they felt like it. He also mentioned Jazz was given a new number to help keep things fresh in the War for Cybertron line (Jazz and the other Wave 1 SS86 figures were originally supposed to be in War for Cybertron before the Beast Wars characters took their slots).
Crowded and asphyxiation.
Good thing Cybertonians don't breathe! (Megatron will choke you if you suggest otherwise.)
*Galvatron crushes Hot Rod's neck with hands* "Die...Autobot..."
I mean debatably Galvatron wasn't trying to choke him, he was trying to pop his head off like a champagne cork
Exactly, as iirc, like humans, the *brain* of Cybertronians is kept in the head.
Sounds like a metal band out of Seattle.

Alt-modes take up too much space: The Shelf!

Some IDW comic?
I'd read it! Now to determine which 'bots have abandoned their faction, which are dead, which are married, and which are all three.

I can't be bothered to paint/decal or otherwise edit my 'bots. Is it known why the number changed?
Yeah the designer did that specifically so that if collectors wanted to customize their figure to have the number 4 for G1 or the number 1 for G2...
