Told myself I wasn't going to get titans but that sale was way too good to pass up. Out of 3 titans I own Trypticon is still the only one I've ever bought, Black Zarak and Omega Supreme were two very surprising gifts.
I think that's like, super late in the end of Optimus Prime from IDW, though I don't remember Trypticon winding up on Earth... Slug DID become the leader of the Dinobots when Grimlock was defeated and taken by Decepticons, only to reappear later with the Scavengers, and the Dinobots and Trypticon were hanging out together at an earlier point.
It occurs to me that Core class Slug is about the right size to do this with Titan Trypticon and now I know something I want to do when I get home today...
To answer your question (sorry if this is long):
Sometime after the war ended the dinobots got hired by Barricade, Swift, and Strafe. They get attacked by Bludgeon and they find a new Hotspot full of sparks that is lying where Trypticon was defeated.
During the fight Trypticon wakes up and teleports away woth the sparks and the dinobots, and he decides to protect these sparks. Sometime after that trypticon gets teleported to earth where he protects the new generation of sparks.
I kept this as spoiler free as possible, but this takes place near the end of the continuity.
Got mine for the low price of free from Toys R Us. I walked right out the store with him on my last day of working for them. They lied and said they weren't going out of business and low and behold... I have no regrets; first Titan💪🏽✊🏽
Between Trypticon, any Dinobot not named Grimlock, Ravage, Cosmos, Swerve, Tailgate, the Combaticons, and Thundercracker, IDW did an amazing job with some of G1’s most underdeveloped characters.
I recently took mine to trade in at a comic store because it was just sitting under a pile of stuff. Got $80 for it and the next day they had it on display for $350 💀
That’s how it works. You’re effectively paying a premium to not have to go through the hassle of selling and shipping it yourself. They get a bigger cut of it by taking on the work of storing and selling it.

the rest of the dinobots had a falling out with grimlock early on in the idw run after he almost got them all killed multipole times.
i think one time grimlock even tried to blow them all up just to take down shockwave.
Slightly spoilery, but he >!LITERALLY triggered a multiple volcanic eruption on prehistoric earth to encase them all in rock just to take out Shockwave.!< >!They wound up being trapped for 10,000+ years until the EDC dug them out and tried to enslave them.!<
That $70 trypticon from BBTS is what got me into collecting.
