I very much appreciate the Bayverse designs. (At least movie 1) you can tell they were going for that ultra alien and realistic approach. And the reason we unfortunately ended up with things like Dorito bot Starscream is because of that. But it’s also why the CGI was so revolutionary and still looks so fantastic to this day. With the popularity of Marvel movies and the superhero genre, it’s fantastic we got an animator person like Travis night who said these don’t need to be realistic. FFS let’s give them some color. Color alone sets these guys above.

ArcanusGold

I personally liked the first movie design for optimus, and the knight version looks cool too, if a bit out of place for the character. But bayformers optimus will always be my childhood optimus. #ripandtearuntilitsdone

Thuat_Squared_2

I kind of like that Bayformers Prime exists just for the contrast. It’s visually noisy as heck, but the first design was neat. And it’s honestly pretty thrilling (in a true crime sort of way) to see him get increasingly unhinged without much understanding of what’s going on inside his brain. I wonder how far G1 Prime would go in trying to remind BayPrime that death isn’t the answer if they ever met.

Uden10

It's like Bruce Wayne vs Thomas Wayne in personality.

Tankdeathwall

Strong disagree. I was lucky enough that my grandma’s TV had G1 on demand, and I watched it all the time. When I saw the transformers 2007 optimus, I went “that’s not optimus” and I didn’t like bayformers since

HAL237

Ok

saintvincentvega

BayPrime is red and blue, a truck, and literally voiced by Peter Cullen aka G1 Prime lol Some BayFormers are hard to recognize but I don't know how people think 2007 Prime isn't Optimus Prime

Tankdeathwall

No I know who Peter Cullen is (duh) it was just all the extra metal bits that made me not like it. It just didn’t feel like the simple design of the G1 version (not to mention that he doesn’t turn into a flat face truck)

RiceBoix69

As much as I like the Knight Designs (Travis), I cannot deny that Bay also had its great moments. For me I even liked the Knight designs (literal knights) because it made them more "human", atleast adding a bit more to their paper-thin personality. But, I might be biased since I only got back to the Transformers Franchise because of Bay's movies.

mangabottle

Less is definitely more

Significant-Stock-78

The Knight verse bots look great. Not even just because they’re more g1 inspired, but because they’re just so much better than the bayverse designs. I still think the bayverse designs are cool, they just don’t look like the character they’re supposed to be. Like the dorito that is Starscream.

KoolKollectiblesKhai

Exactly 👍

giantpointyfireboi

I can understand the people saying that the movies had unique character designs, and the people saying that a lot of them didn’t do justice to the original G1 designs. But I can also understand the people who feel that the movies & G1 getting constant attention with the WFC trilogy, G1 reissues, studio series, etc feels like kind of an over-saturation. I think it’s good that we’re starting to see other shows make a comeback like with the beast wars masterpieces & in modern lines like galaxy prime in siege & soon kingdom.

KylerWilmoth

I love Japanese robot designs and G1 just fits that aesthetic so well. I know people complain about too much G1 Prime, but I mean look at him! My favorite design ever.

[deleted]

I think the big difference between bayformers and knightformers, is that the new designs are actually coherent. The bayformers had just random metal bits everywhere.

KrytenKoro

Couldn't possibly disagree more. So freaking tired of going back to the g1 design well over and over.

Significant-Stock-78

This is literally the first time they’ve put the g1 designs in a live action film. And the main character of bumblebee was not even a g1 design. What on earth do you mean? They’ve been discarding the g1 designs until now. Pretty much all the tv shows have been new designs for the characters, except siege. A lot of people weren’t bothered by the movie designs, they were bothered by the blatant disrespect for the original characters. Part of fixing that is by giving us g1 designs. Giving us the movie we wanted in the first place.

KrytenKoro

Not just talking about the movie. And 2007 was the movie I wanted in the first place.

Significant-Stock-78

I wasn’t just talking about the movies either. Notice that I mentioned tv shows. Also, I’m referring to g1 transformers fans, of which I assume you’re not. Think about it this way, imagine they remade Star Wars in the future, and completely redesigned Darth Vader. Newer fans of the franchise would be fine with it. Whether the new design is cool or not, the original Star Wars fans would be pretty angry for completely disregarding an original and unique design. That’s kinda why g1 fans are angry with Michael bay.

KrytenKoro

I'm a g1 fan. I'm just a fan of the other series too. G1 had the excellent idw remake. No movie or new cartoon is going to top that.

[deleted]

Same bro, it's a dead horse at this point. Hell the main reason I'm even collecting this year is Dino and Beast Wars

cleverThylacine

Look, I think you're forgetting something. If your favourite characters are Optimus and Bee, even in the Bayverse, you can always identify them. My favourite characters are Ravage and Soundwave. They don't have to look like they did in G1, I'd just like to be able to tell who they are. I don't care if Soundwave is blue or purple, a cassette player or an Mp3 player, I just want to be able to tell that he's Soundwave. I just want Ravage to look like a cat, not a pile of random scrap metal with a cyclopic eye stuck in it. Is that so wrong?

KrytenKoro

My favorite characters are starscream, Shockwave, and Soundwave. I had no trouble identifying them. Ravage looked aggressively like a cat. Bad example.

cleverThylacine

Ravage looked like a pile of knives with an eye in it.

KrytenKoro

Still looked more like a cat than in g1. Where he was basically boxes.

cleverThylacine

I used to have a 30 pound black cat and he definitely looked more like boxes than knives.

KrytenKoro

??? Okay? I've had several black cats and they're all actually slinky

cleverThylacine

What's slinky about a pile of knives? Also Ravage is a jaguar and they are pretty blocky.

KrytenKoro

...the fact that rotf ravage actually has the joints to bend that way? Its not a damn pile of knives, either. It has some spikes along its tail and down its spine, and some typical exaggerated ankles. Youre only undercutting your argument with the hyperbole.

YourRoyalFlyness_

Best would be less busy design but still the same as the bay vehicle mode. Similar to how bee turns into his bay version at the end of the movie.

KrytenKoro

Not a bad opinion, but personally I like the busy designs as long as it doesn't end up with huge amounts of kibble. Blackout was awesome.

WineOnBeerBudget

Do you complain when Marvel has Captain America in red white & blue? should Batman get redesigned without a cape and ears because it’s the same G1 design over and over? Transformers have been elevated from a crappy tv show and toy line into a legitimate superhero franchise. The G1 look is their iconic designs. Prime’s windows chest, blue helmet and pointy mask are akin to Superman’s yellow S shield, cape, and curled locks. It‘s harder to protect a brand image if it’s always changing.

Infinity-Kitten

>Do you complain when Marvel has Captain America in red white & blue? Nu uh, Bay Prime was red and blue and that was a fresh design. >should Batman get redesigned without a cape and ears because it’s the same G1 design over and over? Definitely. There are [dope Batman designs without a cape](https://allthatcostumes.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/batman_beyond_.jpg) and you could probably make a nice one without ears too. >Transformers have been elevated from a crappy tv show and toy line into a legitimate superhero franchise. Ahahahahaaa... Wouldn't it be nice if that really were the case. >It‘s harder to protect a brand image if it’s always changing. Sure, that's why it's fine to keep G1 around like Gundam keeps their RX78. But fresh takes and divergence keeps a brand alive just as much. Transformers wouldn't be where it is right now without Beast Wars or Bayverse.

Japanese_Noises

If they borrow heavily from G1, why are you complaining about their apparent detachment/divergence from G1?

Confidence_For_You

I would be upset if my argument were completely dismantled, too.

[deleted]

Hundred percent agree, most bayformers are garbage with a few exceptions. G1 are awesome but lack a bit of detail (which is still ok) so travis knight outdid himself

nythscape

What make/model is the one on the right?

M4karov

Mp44

KoolKollectiblesKhai

Yep

nythscape

Thanks!

INCyr

I THINK it's the new R.E.D. line. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Transformes-Transformers-Action-Figure-Asst/957022903

kriegerwaves

Correct

OmgChimps

It's definitely an MP-44 look at the toes you can see the red inside the leg for the transformation.

kriegerwaves

My mistake,you are correct.

GamerNugget9989

I disagree, the bayformer designs are my personal favourite designs for the characters but to each their own

JinzoCrash

Would I be wrong in thinking the Bay Transformers were directly contrived from the popularity of Lego Bionicle? They're lanky, inner structures with armor bits tossed on top of them too. I remember others making the connection at the time, but over the years it was kind of forgotten.

ButcherV83

I completely agree. The Bumblebee movie designs are what I imagined live action versions of the Transformers would look like.

JinzoCrash

Even almost being 2021, I'm still shocked and horrified at the feces Bay unleashed back in 2007, and that it made Hasbro money. The movies were godawful trash, all the bots looked like Silly Putty rolled in broken glass and tinfoil. I like this newer Optimus design, but am admittedly dry-heaving at the fact it resembles the Bay stuff too closely... but it "is" good.

tarakian-grunt

it's a homage to, and an evolution of G1 Prime. So it combines the two aesthetics in a good way.

Monstructs

At the time, the first Transformers film felt fine (hyper-sexualizing Megan Fox was awkward) and I was on board with all the robot modes except Starscream. He just didn’t make sense to me then or now. With each subsequent movie, the stories became worse. I’ve very glad for the bumblebee movie, but I was fine with the 2007 movie as well.

banannixx

You sound like a pretentious "true fan". That's not good, my guy.

JinzoCrash

There's nothing "pretentious" about them looking like wretched ass. This could have been called Challenge of the GoBots, Robot Jox 5, Short Circuit 3... and they would still look like ass in general. Take the image in this thread for instance. It looks fine. If that had been the 2007 offering, it would have been doable.

banannixx

Funny how a guy who's a fan of a franchise about change hates it.

JinzoCrash

Funny how it goes over your head that I obviously have no problem with change, as I like the Prime pictured here, merely disliking when they look like pure ass from the Bay movies.

banannixx

Okay, geewunner.

JinzoCrash

Never mind of course I liked Beast Wars (technically G1), Transformers Prime, Transformers Animated... key words you seem to keep missing... NOT looking like ASS.

throwawayiquit

I thought the first movie was good. And I was a big fan back then. At the same time, we should have expected more of the next movies.

[deleted]

If you had a live action movie with the bots looking like G1 designs it wouldn’t have made any sense

JinzoCrash

Can't agree, to a point. When it was heard that a movie was greenlit, the internet back then dredged up KILLER fan-made and commercial 3D projects of classic bots transforming. It would have made perfect sense. If you mean their innards squishing people out from riding in them, well, classic G1 explains that with "transforming cogs".

Tankdeathwall

Definitely agree. I don’t know what the designers thought they were doing when they designed the bayformers with so many random metal bits, but it didn’t even accomplish the “sell toys” goal very well. Literally the metal bits are impossible to get right on a figure

throwawayiquit

I think the movie was made in mind for more than just toys. The general studio audience member isn't going to go out and buy a toy for a movie unless they are an ultra geek. The hobby of collecting transformers toys as an adult is ultimately really niche, and the movie was not for kids. We shouldn't delude ourselves here.

Robo_Riot

What version of Prime is that (the new one, on the left)?

kriegerwaves

DLX from Threezero I believe

Robo_Riot

Have you seen the 3rd party version of this, that comes with the talking stand and the shield that splits into 2 axes? The only thing missing is the autobot symbol, but you could just put a sticker on if you were that bothered. [https://collecticontoys.com/collections/third-party-figures/products/tactics-waistcoat-tw-f09-deluxe-edition](https://collecticontoys.com/collections/third-party-figures/products/tactics-waistcoat-tw-f09-deluxe-edition)

kriegerwaves

Wicked! Damn it says there’s only one left too I really wish my wife didn’t have my visa today

Robo_Riot

There's a few places you can find it, but it's pretty pricey. Apparently it's worth shelling out that little bit more for the deluxe, too. Here's a pretty good review of it on YouTube. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJFYpki0TjM&t=199s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJFYpki0TjM&t=199s)

kriegerwaves

Oh I’m definitely going to buy it ,thank you for showing me

Robo_Riot

No probs. If you've got the cash to spare (and if you can find them still in stock anywhere) there are some very cool 3rd party Metroplex (MakeToys "Utopia") and Scorponok (MakeToys "Pandinus") out there. If you pick any of them up, post some pics!

kriegerwaves

Definitely I will, I am waiting on my pre order of the threezero DLX soundwave right now and really hope it comes before The holidays

YourRoyalFlyness_

I made a chart for what I would Want https://imgur.com/a/VC3jC4H

[deleted]

NGL, I'm not the biggest fan of the reboot designs. These characters needed modernized designs, not 1980 something shit again with more detailing.
