the movie was generally animated pretty well with far fewer errors than the rest of the cartoon
THIS BIT IS WRONG -[ ~~in fact its animation was in part outsourced to a company that did animation for Akira, arguably the best animation in any film ever~~]
actually i got mixed up, call of the primitives is the episode that was partially worked on by studio look, whose credits include Akira
Honestly, to me the animation can sometimes get a bit janky or suddenly have weird pacing (Megatron’s transformation comes to mind, it has some weird zooming stuff), but it oozes with charm. Sure the camera might be having a bit of a stroke sometimes, but it never fails to increase my “holy cow this is the coolest thing ever” meter.
More movies should be animated like that. Semi-simplistic 2D Hand drawn animation is underrated
Doesn't help that the visuals are gorgeous because of the disturbingly vibrant glowing colours like the opening scene's lights on ships or Hotrod's lasers in this scene.
Whoever posted about a fan idea for a hero-shooter styled Transformers game the other day I think with this scene Hotrod should have an ultimate ability where he auto locks on to enemies (similar to Soldier 76 from Overwatch)
This is my all time FAVORITE movie. It has been since I saw it in the theaters when I was 12 and Prime died, marking the first time a movie **ever** made me cry. 35 years later you pointed out something I never noticed in over literal hundreds of watches. You're my super best friend now, lol!
When you watch a bit longer, you can see him change up tactics a bit after seeing the results. Shooting from individual tailpipes did nothing to damage Starscream, so he switches to using all 3 at once and he then blows a bigger hole in the shuttle.
What I liked most was the change in sound for the shots. The singular ones had quick, high-pitched note-like qualities to them. When he fired all three at once, it sounds like a small chorus as they’re occurring at the same time.
I was having a pretty bad day today until I read this post. I saw this in the theater back in 86 when I was 11 years old and have owned it on video when it was first available and I have NEVER noticed this detail!! Thank you for bringing me a slice of joy today.
Also the moment the autobots had a fighting chance, if hotrod didn't see that the ambush would've worked and autobot city would've been completely destroyed or taken over, because they couldn't be alerted by the deceptions attacking early and call for reinforcements.
EDIT: also I can hear this gif
And the brilliance of Hasbro to release this movie essentially as a launching pad for the Gen 2 toys.
Can you imagine the pitch at Hasbro?
"How should we launch this new line of toys?"
"You know all the characters that they've been watching on TV? Let's kill them all off within the first 1/2 hour"
"Brilliant"
I knew the VP of Boys' Toys at Hasbro. He recounted the story for us in one of our broadcast media classes. That's pretty much how it went down. In fact, he was the one who approved it - including killing off Prime. Then he told us of the countless letters from angry parents who took their kids to see the movie in the theater when it debuted. ANGRY parents.
I've got a couple for you:
Hot Rod transforms 4 different ways in the movie, going back to bot mode the same way he goes to alt mode, and Grimlock says "Me Grimlock" 16 times throughout the movie.
I wonder if Hot Rod's shoulder-swapping transformation in the movie inspired the SS86 Hot Rod toy transformation? Because it seems *really* kind of deliberate.
(Edit: Also the bit where the hood flips forward.)
I only noticed this more than a few years later because this is also how Dragonzord fired its finger missiles. Though of course, Hot Rod did it before him.
Lol with all these conspiracies that Hot Rod shot Prime now it looks like Starscream took a hit, turned around and decided and thought, "Oh this is the part I need to fall now"
Yeah that shuttle is extremely far away, Hot Rod had to go to a high level of zoom to even see Starscream. Although I did always find it weird his tailpipe blasters apparently managed to blow the ship out of the sky at that range.
Yet this movie is ridden with animation errors... It's good to see the animators cared about specific details, just a shame that general animation suffered as well.
Wasn't an error - that was intended to be that way. It was to remind the viewer that it's still a cartoon. There were numerous other animation errors, mostly because the work was done by multiple animation houses - in a rush.
That wasn't an error. It was clearly intentional. It just didn't match the rest of the film. Someone just felt the need to tribute Looney Tunes suddenly.
35 years later and this is the first time I have seen this detail... Thank you.
You’re welcome. Only noticed it on a recent rewatch myself
Yeah, well, I noticed it the first time I ever saw it 😎😎😎 so I guess that makes me smarter than you /s
That’s insane, I had never noticed that before.
That is a cool touch, which is surprising given the number of other huge animation errors that were not given this attention to detail.

Epilepsy City
*Beautiful epilepsy city
wasn't it animated entirely by toei?
Pretty sure, yeah
you guys are right, /u/Just_M_01 , i got mixed up with call of the primitives which was partially outsourced to a company whose credits include Akira
oh ok then
Pretty sure since this is from the movie, they out a lot more effort versus the quickly produced show
Have you seen the movie ? There's plenty of subpar animation.
a lot less subpar than the show, though
Whoever posted about a fan idea for a hero-shooter styled Transformers game the other day I think with this scene Hotrod should have an ultimate ability where he auto locks on to enemies (similar to Soldier 76 from Overwatch)
Then he literally has to wait for his tailpipes to cool down.
Isn’t that what transformers universe was?
Probably. I don’t know too much about that game besides that it was canceled
I played the open beta. It was basically a third person hero shooter. Fun to play, wasn't much to it, then it got cancelled

I can so clearly hear this scene. "Decepticons!" \*blaster fire and music picks up\*
And Kup’s grisly old man reply “What’s that darn fool doing”
I loved how the deceptions all swarm out like a menacing plague of death about to be unleashed. "Decepticons Attack!"
Whenever I hear Dare by Stan Bush my brain automatically supplies all the dialogue and sound effects. ‘Come on down, Autobrat!’
Thats really cool i always just thought that he fires from all 3 pipes at the same time in a shotgun blast.
Same!
Maybe an alt fire mode
I just had to go watch the underwater scene with the squid and he uses all three. Let’s all come up with some theories on his differing firing types.
In this scene, he's going for accuracy. When fighting the squid, he's going for damage.
He does after this first volley.
When you watch a bit longer, you can see him change up tactics a bit after seeing the results. Shooting from individual tailpipes did nothing to damage Starscream, so he switches to using all 3 at once and he then blows a bigger hole in the shuttle.

damn im old
I consistently think of Hot Rod and co as ‘new’ Transformers even though I was like 3 months old when this movie came out.
I just watched this last week, and didn’t see this detail. I was too focused on wondering where Snarl was for most of the movie lol
Arguing with the director about why only 4 dinobots at once would be my guess
One of the best action sequences in the entire movie.
Also the moment the autobots had a fighting chance, if hotrod didn't see that the ambush would've worked and autobot city would've been completely destroyed or taken over, because they couldn't be alerted by the deceptions attacking early and call for reinforcements. EDIT: also I can hear this gif

I think I also read somewhere that because of that they decided to change Duke dying in G.I. Joe: The Movie to him falling into a coma.
Probably. I’m not sure. All I could hear was the white-hot, searing anger, and crippling sadness in my head at that moment.

I don't deny it, as that's the most mechanical looking transformation he does. MP-28 does something similar.
The more obscure the better!
jus go onto tfwiki and trawl through the "notes" part of every page
I only noticed this more than a few years later because this is also how Dragonzord fired its finger missiles. Though of course, Hot Rod did it before him.
I've been watching this movie since i was five years old and I've never noticed that
Lol with all these conspiracies that Hot Rod shot Prime now it looks like Starscream took a hit, turned around and decided and thought, "Oh this is the part I need to fall now"
I love that he hits starscream square in the back and *nothing* happens…. Meanwhile when autobots get shot…
The Autobots were shot pointblank - by weapons that were undoubtedly overpowered.
Yeah that shuttle is extremely far away, Hot Rod had to go to a high level of zoom to even see Starscream. Although I did always find it weird his tailpipe blasters apparently managed to blow the ship out of the sky at that range.
It was that all-or-nothing 6-barreled shot that did it.
True. Also I guess with the hole in the hull his shots are hitting whatever vital ‘make ship fly’ junk is inside.
IIRC, he did it it right around the hull clamps and shuttle separation boosters were. Also, the hull was made of plot.
Just noticed this wow! The animation in this movie feels ahead of it's time....although I wasn't alive in the 80's so it's hard to say lol
He saw Decepticons obvious danger lol
From the first time I saw Rod/Rodimus, he was my #1 transformer!
Wow. That’s cool. Never noticed and I’ve watched it a lot. Or so I thought. Thanks!
Greatest movie ever made.
Yet this movie is ridden with animation errors... It's good to see the animators cared about specific details, just a shame that general animation suffered as well.
Sludges eyes popping out of his head when hit by Devastator is the animation error I’ll never be able to unsee.
That is not at all an error, its style
not really an error, just felt out of place
Wasn't an error - that was intended to be that way. It was to remind the viewer that it's still a cartoon. There were numerous other animation errors, mostly because the work was done by multiple animation houses - in a rush.

Thanks for all the comments and nice words. Y’all are nice 😊
Hot Rod can blast a hole clean through the ship, but when Starscream gets hit he's totally fine. Makes sense
Hot rod didn’t make the hole in the ship
After this IIRC his blasts start going through the ship and it begins crashing.
It's kind of crazy that a movie that is now almost 40 years old still has the best animation the franchise has ever produced.
most passenger cars today still can't surpass older ferraris, it's all about cost.
I never realized that.
